Condition
Customer states:
The customer reports having difficulty adjusting the instrument panel vent air outlet.
Workshop findings:
The technician confirms the customer’s claim. A damaged instrument panel vent air outlet louver pivot is
discovered as the root cause of the difficulty in adjusting the air outlet.
Technical Background
Extensive analysis under extreme magnification on
damaged parts returned to the WPRC show a fracture
pattern consistent with the exertion of excessive force
on the adjustment louver as the cause for the louver
pivot to shear off from the air outlet. Excessive force is
exerted due to the installation of accessory
components attached to the air outlet, an external
strike to the louver, an attempt at an extreme
adjustment position, etc. The forces that cause the
damage exceed the force necessary for normal use.

Figure 2 shows a fractured and sheared louver pivot
due to excessive force outside of normal use.
