A customer may come in with a complaint of a no start, extended cranking time, or dead
battery.
This may be caused by water intrusion at the X350 connector, the body harness to fuel tank
harness connector, under the car. Water could be wicking down to the X350 connector from
the right tail lamp socket ground wire, causing a short or open circuit.
Inspect the right tail lamp for signs of a water leak. If there is standing water, or the tail lamp is cracked and there are signs
of water in the bulb socket(s), replace the tail lamp and blow out the water from the socket(s) with compressed air, then
check ground G304 for signs of water on the ground wire strands, and dry then blow off the water with compressed
air. Inspect connector X350 for signs of damage, missing cavity plugs, signs of water intrusion or corrosion. If there are
issues, make repairs by replacing the connector with terminated leads on the body harness side, or by replacing the fuel tank
harness, or both repairs if both sides show water intrusion, corrosion and/or damage.
Example of corrosion which can cause a poor connection resulting in no-start. The water intrusion can also short terminals
together, which can keep the fuel pump running after key off, draining the battery.
Example of damaged connector at plugged cavity, which may displace the cavity plug, allowing water to enter.
Example of missing cavity plug
Cavity plugs should be trimmed to prevent damage to the wire insulation.
If no issues are present, continue with your normal diagnosis.
