    2015 TOYOTA AVALON HYBRID

The Avalon Hybrids covered only by warranty enhancement zkk are suffering the same dangers and fvmss noncompliance due to brake booster pump assembly failures as those Toyota covered by safety recalls (d0h & k0l). By excluding Avalon Hybrids with defective brakes from the d0h and k0l safety recalls, Toyota is leaving the owners to helplessly experience life-threatening brake failure or malfunction before Toyota will provide the replacement brake components needed to make the vehicle safe. The law requires Toyota to prevent the life-threatening dangers of this brake defect before the failure occurs. Toyota's cost-cutting strategies are causing crashes and injuries. Injuries and crashes caused by the brake defect explained in this letter have occurred and been reported to the national highway traffic safety administration. Toyota's decision to provide a reactionary, post-failure repair - instead of a preventative safety recall remedy - explains many of the crashes and injuries on nhtsa's safercar.Gov website. Relevant complaints from safercar.Gov include 10515182 and 11093611. Diagnostic trouble codes C1256, C1253, C1252, and C1391 - indicating dangers and noncompliance - are being stored in vehicles excluded from the past safety recalls. Toyota has long had knowledge of the unreasonable risks to safety and fmvss noncompliance occurring in hybrids excluded from their safety recalls. 2013 LEXUS RX450H with 119500. miles

My 2013 Rx450h' abs light suddenly turned on while i was driving in a local road. Along with the abs light, there were brake warning light, master maintenance warning light, slip light on along with "check abs" "brake system malfunction" warning messages appearing on the dash board. Very unsettling. I took the car to a Lexus dealership and they retrieved error code as "C1391, abnormal leak in accumulator. " they didn't detect any leakage or moisture in the diagnosis, they recommended to replace the abs actuator and booster bump/accumulator assembly for a price of over $4300. After i did some research of this problem, i ran into many complaint of the same issue with various toyota and Lexus cars, especially on hybrid models. I also learned the faulty component is the issue and the issue has been there on my car for a long time without my realizing it. Because 1) the abs assembly would make the chirping sound when i start the car. Since the sound isn't loud, i wasn't aware it was any indication of a problem. 2) i encountered an even more serious symptom of this issue many many times. When i put the gear on reverse shortly after i switch on engine, even while i am stepping on the brake, the car would just move backward, out of control of the brake. I have to release and reapply my foot on the brake to stop its movement. I failed to recognize that this is the symptom of a failing abs actuator earlier, as i thought it was something the hybrid model has with its electric motor kick in instantly. I also learned toyota/Lexus offered customer support programs for this specific issue across many models as detailed in this post http://www.Diy-time.Com/automotive/toyota/faulty-brake-actuator-brake-booster-pump-on-toyota-Lexus-cars/. Lexus should issue sweeping recall to address this prevalent issue in its products. The issue would lead to real safety issues for drivers.

    2013 TOYOTA PRIUS V with 129000. miles

While driving the vehicle a sequence of 4 lights appears on the dash- 1. Brake light 2. Master warning light 3. Slip indicator light and 4. Abs (anti-lock brake system indicator light). When this happens the vehicle's power braking system goes into what seems to be a manual mode making the pedal hard to press and brakes to malfunction, it is so dangerous. I took the vehicle to my local Toyota dealer and they confirmed fault code C1391 (abnormal leak in the accumulator) and the "brake cylinder assy. Abs pump, part # 47050-47110 is defective. The estimate given by the dealer for my repair was $3040.00. After doing my research on the condition, it was discovered that Toyota has issued a warranty enhancement letter coded "zjb" for similar Prius Vehicles of the same year span as my vehicle. After contacting Toyota, they stated the enhancement is vin-specific and the Prius V model does not fall within the "zjb" enhancement. The enhancement currently applies to 2012-2015 prius and prius phv vehicles, but not the Prius V. The program offers complete repair, at zero cost to the customer. It is my position that the Prius V should be included in this rework as it affects the same components, same fault codes, and same symptoms affected on the covered models. Toyota is well aware of the issue with these abs brake pumps going back to their 2010 cars. It is also my position that since there are less Prius V models on the road, there just hasn't been enough complaints to make it relevant. I currently have an open file with Toyota, the file number is 2005133097. At this time they have agreed to make some adjustments on the repair costs, however, Toyota should be required to add the Prius V model to the "zjb" warranty enhancement rework letter. There are many other Prius V model owners that this issue is affecting and not being treated fairly by Toyota. Please do what you can to help?

    2013 TOYOTA PRIUS V with 137500. miles

My brakes failed on a two-lane divided street in lutz. We were driving straight, and when my husband put his foot on the brake, they failed. We drove to the nearest Toyota garage and the agent said that it was a master cylinder problem but the prius would be covered under a recall - prius' less than 10 years old and less than 150,000 miles on the clock were covered. My car fit both criteria. On returning to collect the car, none of the v class prius' were included. The part number was C1391. We had to pay $3886.09. Our manufacturer number was not covered. It was one number different. I spoke to the most senior executive i could contact at Toyota. (danny castro). Danny had no answers that i found satisfactory. His basic reply was: 'your manufacturers number is not included.' these are my concerns and reasons: 1. There is a known fault with the master cylinder with all prius cars, but the company says that it is only responsible for certain manufacturer part numbers, which doesn't include the v's. I think it's a design fault and by giving the part a different number to avoid the recall on v's, seems underhanded. 2. There is nothing i have done to instigate or aggravate this problem. 3. My car has been perfectly serviced and i have not missed any mileage dates. 4. We were lucky. With the brakes failing abruptly and without warning, we were at risk and i believe that my complaint may save others that aren't so fortunate as us. All prius cars should be covered under the recall program. The internet documents master cylinder failures on all prius models, the top one being a leak; my problem. 1.5 million cars are being recalled - why not mine!!!!

2013 Prius 3 vehicle always serviced at Toyota dealership, last service they recommended front brake pads replacement, tires and alignment so i did . 7 months later driving along smooth city road abs, tracking control, and brake lights comes on brakes feel harder to depress and no generative braking. I had diagnostics run for codes and came back (C1391 abnormal leak in accumulator). Research found this common problem crack in accumulator due to vibration but found no recall on it.

    2012 TOYOTA PRIUS V with 105000. miles

My abs actuator has completely failed. I was getting code C1391 when i first had the problem diagnosed and recently it finished failing completely. I was on the highway when it did and i severely lost brake pressure and almost got in a car accident because of it. This issue was recalled on regular prius hatchbacks but because the Prius V's abs pump system is slightly different to compensate for the different weight of the Prius V, the Prius V doest fall under the extended warranty to have the issue fixed even though it is the exact same issue that the regular prius' have been having which they extended the warranty on. Im extremely frustrated because i have called my dealership as well as the Toyota helpline to report this and they say that theres nothing they can do for me and that my car is just not covered under the extended warranty because the warranty didnt apply to Prius V's even though its the same part having the same issue. I've been quoted $4,000 to have this fixed and i can't afford that right now.

The abs, traction control, and brake warning lights came on. I took the vehicle to my local Toyota dealership, where i was told the diagnostic has alarm dtc C1391 and this is a major brake hazard. The dealer state the abs brake system need to be replaced at a cost of $4,504.63 plus taxes. I explained to the dealer the car is making a sound like the abs is kicking in when it come to a stop. The noise persist coming in and out even when the car is parked and off. My 2012 Prius has only 74k miles. The brakes pedals feel weird and loose. I red Toyota extended the warranty for this issue due the brake actuator failure due manufactory issues. The dealer state my vin is not there. Brake booster pump/abs actuator C1391/C1256 were codes given in attached report from Toyota. This is apparently been a problem with other models of Toyotas and are covered under a warranty enhancement, however the 2012 is not covered. Nothing seems wrong with the car and they cannot really tell me what exactly is wrong or if it is a bad sensor, however they want $4,200 to replace the whole unit. Seems like this is a known issue that they have not been able to fix from previous models and would like it covered due to potential safety risk.

Car was in motion and brake pedal went half way to floor and abs, brake, traction control and tire sensor lights came on. Master cylinder or brake booster seem to have failed. Dealer didn't recognize codes and could only recommend changing spark plugs when i just had them replace 6-8 months prior. Explained that did think that had anything to do with brakes giving out. They reset codes and sure enough happened again within the next 30 days. Toyota admitted to since receiving many reports of certain internal malfunctions of brake booster assemblies. 4 trips later to dealer the response is the codes are not coming up (dtcs) C1391, C1252, C1256 or C1253 in order to be covered it's voluntary customer support program which has brake booster and brake booster pump coverage. 2012 TOYOTA PRIUS V with 76000.0 miles

The brake booster/acctuator has failed on my prius at about 76000 miles and i bought it used with 35000 miles. I have found out that this has been an issue with Prius Vehicles since 2006 and enhanced warranties have been issued on models from 2006 as well as 2010-2015. I have tried to call Toyota to have them fix the issue but they say that my vehicle isnt covered under the warranty for some reason. What they said was that my parts maker wasnt covered under the warranty but if its a problem that has been prevelant in other Prius Vehicles, i dont understand why this wouldnt be covered regardless of who made the part. It has affected my braking randomly and has almost caused me to have an accident a couple times already. When diagnosed i got error code C1391 which was covered under the warranty enhancement letter i found yet Toyota will not fix my vehicle.

    2012 TOYOTA PRIUS V

My 2012 Prius V is only 90k miles. Starting from about 2 weeks ago, the warning lights including brake system warning light, abs warning light and slip indicator light were suddenly lit on when i was driving, then i found the regenerate brake become very hard and difficult to stop which was malfunctioning. These warning lights were kept on all the time when i drive the car. The car threw out code C1391 when given a diagnosis. After some online work, i found this is a very common problem for Prius V. I went to the dealership however the dealership states that my car, based on its vin, is not in one of the certain cars covered by zjb phase 2 which covers brake booster and brake booster pump assemblies for certain 2011-2015 model year Prius Vehicles. The failure of the brake could be a deadly deficiency to all the people in the car when driving. Now i have to think to stop using this car because of the severe security risk. Toyota should take action to solve all this problem for all involved cars, not certain cars. My car is made in 2012, the diagnosis code C1391 given by my car are falling into one of the four codes associated with the brake problem covered by zjb phase 2. It is ridiculous that my car was not issued this extended warranty.

There's seems to have been a recall for other models of prius but the 'v' not included. Many v owners have experienced this problem. After i complained that they had recalled 972,000 other prius but didn't include the Prius V they said i only needed to replace the master cylinder and power booster and said they would do it for $1,516.89. So then i go to take the car to the service department today 12/4/19 and while sitting there the idiot lights all turn off and the brake start to function normally own its own... I ask the service representative what his thoughts were and he said i should still make the repairs, but he couldn't say what they would do it came back. So i'm going to drive the car for a week to see. While i'm waiting can you please do a recall on the brake pump assemebly since these folks dont even know what the heck is going on with this car. It appears its not either device and its a computer glitch that they haven't resolved...Help us prius owners please!!!

The brake, abs, and stability control light come on and the brakes require more pressure to function. The problem is intermittent, but has been happening more often and for longer. The rotors, pads, and brake fluid were looked at within the last month and have no issues. I am getting a code C1391 abnormal leak in the accumulator. The symptoms, as well as my car year and make match this recall, but i was never informed of this recall and there are no open recalls associated with my vin. Had the traction, abs, and brake lights all pop on. Braking feels a little different now. C1391 code was given by mechanic. He is talking about brake parts that will cost parts and labor around $2500. I can't afford this and i need a car to drive, so hoping no wrecks. We are a Toyota family with 4 now in the family. Called to complain to Toyota headquarters and they said out of warranty, but they did recall the 2010 models, even though the same problem is with the 2010-2015 and some other Toyotas. They basically blew me off.

I was driving at about 35 mph and all of a sudden my brakes stopped working. The brake , abs and traction lights came on all at once. I somehow made it home but i could have easily crashed. I had my 9 year old in the back seat and he also got very scared. Now i cannot drive my car and the brakes feel as they as stuck and very hard. I took my car to a reputable mechanic and he told me it is giving him code C1391. This is the same problem that the 2010 Prius had under the recall. My Prius is 2011 and not under the recall. I feel that the 2011 should be under recall because many thousands of lives are in danger now.

Brake actuator has gone out giving a code of C1391. I have had the car less than a year and the brakes are now grabby and not functioning properly. This is a known problem with the gen 2 Prius (my previous car) and was covered under an extended warranty. Apparently the gen 3 Prius has the same issue and Toyota has extended the warranty of the 2010 Prius to the manufacturing date of 11/2010. My Prius was manufactured in 12/2010 and i was just notified it would be $4000 to fix the issue that is a known manufacturing defect. Apparently Toyota didn't fix the problem the first time and it's a direct safety issue when the brakes don't work as intended.

My car was parked on the street,i got into it, turned it on, shifted to driving and started proceeding forward. I then noticed 3 lights (the abs light, brake light, and traction control light) suddenly appeared on the dashboard. Nothing out of the ordinary occurred prior to the light coming on, it just suddenly appeared. The error code in the computer system read C1391. The details read there was "abnormal leak in accumulator". The car no longer drives safely. If the brakes are pressed suddenly the car skids instead of slowing down. In order for the car to come to a complete stop a lot more pressure has to be applied to the brake compared to before abs problem. The stopping distance has increased by approximately twice its length. The car is no longer capable of sharp turns, the back end of the car skids dangerously left or right while turning, depending on the direction the driver is turning. The braking, handling and control of the car decreases so much when the roads are wet that at times the car skids even when going at a cautious speed in rain. For my safety and for others i drive in "b" instead of "d" when it rains.

Warning lights for traction control, brake, ave all appeared, and then braking dramatically changed. Almost like not having power brakes. Lights went off and normal brake finction returned. The warning indicator lights go on and off, at random. Code C1391 shows when scanned. This is same symptom as exhibited by 2010 model year Priuses covered by recall. Mine is 2011, exact same issue but not covered by recall. Problem has occurred at low 5-25 mph and highway speeds (55-70 mph) this is very dangerous as if this happens at high speed (highway) and the problem occurs there is a sudden change in braking quality an accident may result. This happens when the vehicle is moving, at any speed.

While driving, we made a left turn on a city street, warning lights for abs, stability control, and warning lights all came on at once. Brakes became spongy when pressed. Was able to still brake but with much more effort and not confident in the braking. I had it towed to a local mechanic and the diagnostic error code registered "C1391". Per mechanic this is for abs acculator, or booster pump failure or leak per mechanic. This happened out of the blue, no warnings. Luckily while driving we were driving in town and at a speed of only about 15-25 mph and we were not on the free way or at high speed. Per Toyota the part required are cylinder assembly brake and brake pump assembly. Cost to repair these parts per Toyota would be estimated at $2700. Local dealership wouldn't do anything until it registered the code again. The dealership service advisor, said until the code is triggered again they wouldn't do anything. Also after the code was reset the brakes worked normal again. This in my opinion is a safety issue!

On friday, may 15 2020 i turned on my car and saw abs, brake and vehicle traction lights illuminated. The brake peddle also felt odd. Within 30 minutes i took it to my local Toyota dealer. The service writer had a clear idea of what was happening as she said this has been happening a lot to Prius models. Sure enough the diagnostic code C1391. I was told i needed to replace the brake booster/pump assembly which would cost me $3,000! Upon research, my car was covered under a tsb till november 30, 2019, but only if they failed. There was no recall issued by tms to pro-actively fix a known brake deficiency. My car has 159,000 miles, i have never had anyone service my vehicle besides Toyota dealerships (except tires). I called tms to corporate to see if i could be offered assistance, but was flat out denied (i can provide that case number if needed).I find it odd that Toyota began phase2 on 2011-2015 for same issue that lasts till april 2021. It is unsettling that if Toyota knows about the brake booster and pump problems, why they don't have a recall, but rather a wait and see if it fails under their 'secondary/enhanced warranty'. Upset that if this happened 5 months ago, this would have fallen under their guideline to repair.

While driving on the highway the abs warning light, brake light and traction light all came on at once, took to local Toyota specialist, diagnosed the code as C1391, an abnormal leak in break booster accumulator. Mechanic informed me that this issue was previously under safety recall and my vehicle had the proper repairs done, clearly this is an ongoing safety issue with this vehicle that is not being properly addressed by Toyota. It is also an extremely expensive repair which Toyota needs to be financially responsible for.

I was at highway speed when four annunciator lights illuminated on the dash (master warning, brake system warning light, abs warning light, slip indicator). I decelerated vehicle using engine power then applied brakes. Brake pedal depressed approx. 3/4 travel (much further than normal) before braking action felt. I stopped vehicle, recycled power and warning lights remained illuminated and brake responsiveness was unchanged. Upon reaching destination, i downloaded error code (C1391) then called local Toyota service center. Informed that enhanced warranty letter zjb addressed this issue, however coverage expired 6 weeks ago. Service center directed me to Toyota customer care. Toyota customer care confirmed that the repair coverage had recently expired and they were not able to offer any assistance whatsoever. Due to the global pandemic, my driving had been severely curtailed since march. Now july, a required work trip led to this malfunction. This issue should be classified as a recall and not a warranty with an expiration. A major, flee-wide braking issue should require the manufacturer to repair.

I was driving and pressed the brake pedal to make a turn. After completing the turn i noticed several warning lights illuminated on the dash board including brake, abs, and traction control. The brakes were very mushy but worked enough to get the vehicle to a shop. The shop assessed the vehicle which displayed code C1391 and said it was brake related possibly abs system. They cleared the code in my vehicle and brakes worked normal for a very short time before the same warning lights appeared and brakes went mushy and not working properly. I then looked up possible recalls or enhanced warranties and i called Toyota customer service and was told there is no recall or extended/enhanced warranty for any braking issue on my vehicle based on the vin number. I took the vehicle to my local Toyota dealer and they charged me to test for a code. They came up with code C1391 and state in their paperwork that the cause is "brake booster internal failure" and recommend replacing the brake booster. Their paperwork shows replacement of a brake pump and brake booster had an extended warranty but that it expired 9/26/2020. Therefore the dealer would not fix my car at the cost of Toyota. My vehicle has approximately 91,000 miles and others with higher mileage have documented that Toyota has repaired this known, well documented, expensive (about $4,000) and continued dangerous braking problem in several cases. Per the dealership and my contact with Toyota they are not willing to repair my vehicle at their cost., which at the Toyota dealership is about $4,000 parts and labor. An additional issue is trusting Toyota service and/or private mechanics that they will replace the problem part(s) or replacing additional parts making the repair bill higher or maybe not fixing the problem where additional repairs will be required before too long.

I have driven people for a living for over 30 years. I bought a Prius because of fuel costs. A month ago while transporting passengers, my power brakes go out and my dash lights up with abs, brake, & traction control warning lights. I take it to the Toyota dealer who charges me $111 to tell me i have a brake problem and that it will cost $4418 to fix it. Code # C1391; they recommend replacing the master cylinder; and booster pump assembly saying there is an abnormal leak down of the brake accumulator. This is insane. I cannot afford to fix it and must continue to work to live; therefore driving about 200 miles/day with hydraulic only brakes. My research indicates there was a major recall for this exact problem on the 2010 model. The dealership and Toyota corporate both say my vehicle was not part of the recall. I feel as though it should be since, obviously, the problem has not been solved. I am not alone, as many owners on Priuschat have the same problem. This is a major safety concern to not only myself, other vehicles or pedestrians, but also my passengers. An expanded recall is necessary and warranted. Anything you can do will help and make us all safer. .

Hello. I recently started to experience an issue with my vehicle. My brakes started to make some kind of unusual noises every time i press on them. I've never had that before and i service my car pretty often. I went to authorized Toyota dealership and they told me there was a computer issue and they fixed it for $110. It continued to make noises and all of the sudden it began showing abs/brake/vsc lights on my car dashboard either while i was driving or being in the 'park' mode. At the same time my brakes stopped working well while driving when the abs/brake/vsc lights were on. I checked the code of the error through the car computer and it showed me 'C1391'. I went to the dealership again and they did another check and this time they found that brake master cylinder/booster/abs assembly needs to be replaced with $3,170 price. I attached here the paper that my Toyota prime dealership located here in saco, me gave me. I've been reading a lot about it online and people with the same type of hybrid vehicles have experienced it. I think Toyota needs to look into the issue and acknowledge that it is a common problem in their hybrid vehicles. I service my car all the time, i do oil change and check all the systems very thoroughly, so i don't understand why we, consumers, have to pay that big of a price for the car repair. I hope you can look into the issue and help me (and to all other car owners) to resolve this kind of issue. Thank you.

I drive a Toyota Prius 2010, i was driving when my brake, abs, and traction control light came on at once. When i tried to apply the brake it would take a lot of force for my car to stop. I went to the Toyota dealership to get it checked out and they said part number C1391 has to be replaced. Tech found abnormal leak in accumulator. The accumulator pump assembly needs to be replaced. Which would cost me 2,000 dollars parts and labor. They also told me they might find out that the master cylinder might have to be replaced as well if damaged. Which would be 3,300 dollars. So worst case scenario it would be over 5,000 with tax to fix my car. I noticed other 2010 Prius models were recalled for the exact issue but only certain vin numbers. My vin number wasn't included. I feel like it should be if many other people are complaining about the same issue with this car. I can't afford over 2,000 in repairs let alone 5,000.

I've counted at least 30 brake booster/actuator complaints on this site year to date for the same issue on this model year car. Our issue is the same as everyone else. Just under 150k miles, brake, abs and traction control lights came on my daughter's car (we are original owners) as she was driving home from work. Non responsive brakes, only rear brakes engage if you push the pedal to the floor of the car. Took to dealer who diagnosed dtc C1391, accumulator leak malfunction. Our car was not included in original warranty enhancement (manufacture date of 1/2010), so price quoted was $4814.66. Our daughter cannot afford, so we called Toyota warranty who offered us $2007 as a measure of good will, but no more. This is a serious safety issue, beyond ridiculous that some cars with the same defect had the warranty enhancement program available which paid for the entire repair, yet most others like us were denied the fix and are facing astronomical repair bills that many cannot afford, nor anticipate on a car such as a Toyota. The brakes failed while my 22 year old daughter was driving - that could have gone so very wrong.

I have a 2010 Toyota Prius. I was driving home on i-80 and when i was getting down on the slope of the sacramento river bridge, three lights suddenly popped on the dashboard - abs light, brake light and traction control light. Following this, i lost efficient control on the brakes and i had to push really hard on the brake pad to even slow the car down. If i had to stop suddenly, it would have definitely resulted in a serious crash. Because the brakes stopped working as they are supposed to, i turned on the blinkers, took the exit and tried to stop slowly. I was able to stop on the side of the road just before the red signal. I was just couple of miles from my home so i kept the blinkers on, and slowly drove through internal roads to my home. Later when i found out the code, it came as C1391 which is usually for failure of the brake booster assembly or the brake booster pump assembly or both. When i contacted my local Toyota dealership, they mentioned that the extended warranty for replacing these parts ended in november 2020 and because of that they asked me to take care of this >$3000 repair. I also contacted Toyota corporate to file a complaint and was told the same thing. This issue is a serious safety concern and Toyota should issue a recall and not an extended warranty. They should not be waiting for people to loose their lives before they issue a recall.

When putting the vehicle in drive, the high-pitch sound returns for one to two minutes. During that time the brake pedal becomes impossible to depress. If the engaged, the vehicle does not stop until the brake pressure returns. Once the sound stops, the brake pressure returns to normal. If Lexus is replacing so many of this part there should be a recall. Reading the Lexus forum and other online Lexus sites, this problem occurs as early as 12,000 miles and is a covered warranty item. I will contact Lexus about his issue also. I hope you will investigate and consider making this a recall item. I have attached five photos. The vehicle was stationary and the lights appeared immediately after starting the engine.

My car has been intermittently displaying abs vsc and brake warning lights. When they are on there is no brake regeneration. The lights have come on and gone off and now are on again. Getting obd code C1391 (abnormal leak in accumulator) my vehicle is just a small amount over mileage to cover this under enhanced warranty but Toyota knows they have a brake accumulator problem and wants 3k to fix what should have been a recall long ago. Have called and Toyota will not help.

2009 vehicle (manufactured 9/2008) only has 83k miles on it. Croaking sound for week or so and then one morning abs failure warning on display. Codes are C1241 and C1391. Same problem as others. Needs new abs pump and actuator. The parts are #44050-48320 and #44070-48020and cost over $3k for parts alone. Very disappointed in Toyota, i thought Toyota quality was better than this.

I turned on my Toyota Camry 2009 hybrid in the garage and was immediately met by numerous warning lights, an audible warning buzzer, and a message in the dash message center that read "check vsc." i was going to drive the car to a mechanic but discovered that when i backed out of the garage that there was no braking action. They had completely failed. The car was placed on a computer which provided error code C1256 and C1391. Both codes indicate abs/vsc/trac malfunctions. I brought the vehicle to my local Toyota dealer and supplied a computer print out of the error codes. The problem was diagnosed as an internal leak in the abs accumulator module resulting in a loss of hydraulic pressure to the brakes. Cost of replacement with labor was quoted as $3,700.00. I did some research and discovered numerous complaints by other Toyota owners with identical problem i encountered. I also discovered that Toyota has redesigned the abs annunciator module. I contacted Toyota corporate headquarters in california who denied any a problem with the part. If they are unaware of the problem, why did they redesign the part? This problem is extremely dangerous as in resulted in total brake failure. I was extremely lucky that my issue manifested itself while the car was parked and not at 70 mph on an interstate highway in heavy traffic. One website set up by someone who experienced this identical problem had thirty five entries in the guest book. Everyone had the same problem.

I have owned my 2009 Highlander hybrid since i purchased new from dealer in july 2009. In mid december 2020 i noticed on two separate occasions that with my foot firmly on the brake pedal the vehicle would still be moving a few feet before stopping. No warning lights so i figured no big problem. In january 2021 a warning light flashed on for maybe 5 seconds regarding brake problem. On february 2nd i brought it to my local Toyota dealer to assess. They scanned it and didn't receive any dtc codes. I was advised that my front brake pads were at 4mm and should be replaced soon. I did that. Vehicle drove without incident until june 20th when several warning lights lit up. Abs, tire pressure, brakes and traction. The warning lights stayed on so i brought my Highlander back to my local Toyota dealer. This time i was told that dtc C1391 came up. Abnormal leak in accumulator, replace brake actuator and pump assembly. That would come out to $2901.24. Toyota had issued a customer support program bulletin regarding the brake actuator and brake booster pump assembly. But for some unknown reason, given the dangerous condition a failure would present, that 100% coverage of replacement expired on december 31, 2020. Toyota is not making any exceptions on this matter. It appears that Toyota is putting their reputation as well as dollars and cents ahead of their customers.

Started car in evening and got warning "brake malfunction, check abs, check vsc system". Took car to our mechanic and he found code C1391. Mechanic said part very expensive and recommended contacting Toyota service as cost to repair would probably be similar. Mechanic said he had replaced for another customer (2004 model highlander) who after the repair got notice from Toyota about recall repair last week. Toyota service said cost to repair is $4000! Reading on this site i see others with this issue. Definitely needs to be addressed by nhtsa.

While driving 40 mph, my dashboard lit up with 'brake brake malfunction', 'abs chevk abs', and 'check vsc system'. All dash lights lit up also. Drove to the repair shop and had codes run. No codes were present. This is related to the C1391 code that has a recall on 06&07 highlanders, and 08 camy's. The front right of the engine is making a clicking sound every 20 seconds from the brake stabilizer. Just prior to this for the last 2 weeks, the vehicle has had difficulty obtaining a 'ready' light. Battery has been pulled and bench tested, and all connections were checked. It would appear that in the last two months many 08 owners are presenting with this problem, with a range of proposed repair expense from $3,300 to $6,500. Seeing as this is a known problem with the 08 camry', resulting in brake failure in both camry's and highlander, this ought to be a recall for both vehicles.

2008 TOYOTA HIGHLANDER HYBRID with 78000.0 miles

While driving under normal conditions, vehicle warning lights for abs brakes, parking brake, vsc and brake malfunction all illuminated with message to stop vehicle immediately in a safe location and contact dealer. Dealer diagnostic discovered code C1391 "accumulator leak", which is an internal leak and not visible from external inspection - i had just brought the vehicle in to the dealer for regularly scheduled maintenance 3 weeks prior. Dealer service dept said abs system had failed and recommended removing and replacing brake actuator assembly at a cost of $4,622! After researching online, i learned abs braking system failures are a widespread and common problem for the highlander. Toyota issued recalls for 2006, 2007 models for abs brake actuator, but not for 2008 highlander. Toyota knows this is a safety issue (servco service dept in hawaii stated they have seen multiple instances of this brake actuator failure). Note my 2008 highlander is under 80k miles. Toyota needs to do the right thing and add the 2008 highlander model to the current brake actuator recall so that this safety concern is fixed.

To rectify this issue we will need to replace the abs brake actuator, resistor, and flush the system. Tsb-0032-16 states that this is a common issue caused by an internal brake fluid leak in the brake actuator. The front brake pads look almost new, and the rotors are in good shape. The rear shoes and drums are in good shape as well. The noise the customer is hearing is the abs engaging. This is covered under warranty from Toyota for 10 years, 100,000 miles. We purchased a 2008 Highlander Hybrid in 2016. The car was practically maintenance free until last week. All service except oil changes have been done by the local Toyota dealer. My wife was pulling out of the driveway when the abs/vsc lights came on and the console said to pull over. A code scan said it was C1391, internal acc pressure leak. Took it to the dealer. They said it needed a new brake accumulator and a new brake booster for a total of over $5000! Researching the issue, i found it is a fairly common issue for these cars. When i called Toyota to ask if the cost of this repair, equal to 1/3 the cost of the vehicle, could be mitigated, i eventually got a woman who told me that since i didn't take the car in to the dealer for nearly a year in 2015, i was not a loyal Toyota customer and they have chosen not to help me. Really!!?? The car didn't need any service during that time! I own 5 other cars including a couple of bmws and i have never had a repair this expensive and have never been admonished by an automobile company representative for not getting a car serviced when it didn't need it. This was our first Toyota and will be out last.
