P0464

Fuel Level Sensor Circuit Intermittent

DTC P0464, sometimes indicated as P046400 is an OBD diagnostic trouble code indicating a generic fault with the vehicle powertrain (i.e. engine and gearbox). This code identifies an error with the auxiliary emissions system causing fuel level sensor circuit intermittent.

The fuel level sensor measures the amount of fuel in the fuel tank. The fuel level sensor is a sending unit that sends a signal to the PCM. The PCM uses this signal to calculate the amount of fuel needed to deliver the correct amount of fuel to the engine.
If the PCM detects an intermittent or incorrect signal from the fuel level sensor, it will set the DTC P0464.
There are a few things that could cause an intermittent or incorrect signal from the fuel level sensor.
One possibility is a bad fuel level sensor.
Another possibility is a bad connection at the fuel level sensor.
A third possibility is a bad PCM.
If you suspect that the DTC P0464 is being caused by a bad fuel level sensor, you can test the fuel level sensor by checking the voltage signal at the sensor.
If you suspect that the DTC P0464 is being caused by a bad connection at the fuel level sensor, you can test the connection by checking the resistance at the sensor.
If you suspect that the DTC P0464 is being caused by a bad PCM, you can

The check engine light came on and fuel gauge went down to empty, even though i had a full tank. Took to my mechanic and he said the check engine code indicated "P0464 - fuel level sensor 'a' ckt intermittent" problem. He informed me of his price, but recommended i go to a Hyundai dealership first to see if covered under the 100k power train warranty. Took to local dealer on 11/10/14 and they said it wasn't covered or considered a recall, and it would cost over $800 to repair. My mechanic suggested i use a bottle or two of chevron techron fuel additive with my next fill up because it may clean the sending unit, as gasoline tends to coat the grid that contacts pass over causing the gage failure. A 20 oz and 12 oz bottle were added and shortly after, the check engine light went out and the fuel gage began to register properly again. This lasted about 2 months, but then the light came on again in january and gage went down when i started up the car one morning. I tried the same thing again with the techron, and it worked for about 1 month. The problem has occurred several more times lately but the gage problem is inconsistent. Sometimes everything seems good then if i happen to accelerate quickly, everything goes haywire again. I don't want to keep paying for bottles of techron on every other fill-up or use premium gas (which didn't work btw), and i also think this problem is common enough on 2007-2009 Santa Fe's on internet postings that its time for Hyundai to step up to fix this problem as a recall. Some think it's not important because it hasn't caused a crash, fire, or accident resulting in injury or death, but if someone ignores it and runs out of gas on a major highway, in a tunnel (i go through one 2x per day), or another dangerous spot, it very well could cause a major accident or death. Do the right thing Hyundai and issue a recall for this issue!!
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,

The fuel reading fluctuates continuously with incorrect readings sometimes it says empty when it's full or has a significant amount of gas in it. Then the check engine light comes on. I took it to an auto care shop to have them use their computerized system to see why my check engine light is on. It showed the codes P0464 and P0463. This is the fuel sensor circuit and it is extremely dangerous because you could be driving and the gage suddenly reads empty and your car shuts down. If your on the highway and this happens your dead! This is happening to so many Hyundai Santa Fe's yet no one is doing anything about it. This needs to be addressed asap or there will be extreme consequences! This happens when the vehicle is in motion when it's stationary and everytime you start the car! It is so dangerous and i'm afraid to drive my car now
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,

2009 HYUNDAI SANTA FE with 107130. miles

Starting on july 15, 2016, the check engine light (mil) came on, as well the fuel gauge incorrectly indicating the amount of fuel, in the fuel tank, at 107130 miles. I had the mil diagnosed as P0464, fuel sensor defect. Many other Hyundai Santa Fe owners, have reported this problem, requesting financial assistance to repair this significant safety problem, to Hyundai customer service, to no avail. Their response has been it is not their concern and have not offered to provide financial assistance. If i were to be driving at highway speed, e.G., 55-75 mph, and have the engine shut down, due to lack of fuel, the power steering would be significantly impaired, with loss of control. This could lead to loss of control of my vehicle, with subsequent probability of an "accident", resulting in personal injury, resulting in death, to me and my family members, as well as others, as well as serious property damage. The cost for replacement of the fuel level sensors is approximately $600.00 to $800.00. This fuels sensor problem and mil, occurs when stationary, when the ignition switch is turned to start, as well as when in motion, at any speed. I believe that before some disastrous event occurs, Hyundai should assist in the replacement of these defective fuel sensors.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,

2009 HYUNDAI SANTA FE with 65000.0 miles

At approx 65000 miles of normal driving fuel gauge became erratic and unreliable. Guage reads anywhere from full to one eighth and fluctuates almost constantly regardless of actual fuel level. Check engine light on produced error code P0464. This is a dangerous situation.

I own a 2009 Hyundai Santa Fe, the check engine light came on with odbii code P0464, fuel level sender(sensor) unit malfunction "intermittent operation". I normally repair my own vehicles and have repaired cars for many years. The issue i have is that, only on rare occasions should these fuel tank parts go bad on a vehicle with less than 100,000 miles on it. I'm now seeing more and more complaints about these fuel tank issues, consider a recall for Hyundai vehicles.
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,

2008 HYUNDAI SANTA FE with 83000.0 miles

My vehicle has had a fuel gauge that would move up and down while car is still. Today the check engine light came on with a code P0464-fuel level sensor. The fuel in vehicle is at half and the gauge would go all the way to empty (with empty light coming on) then it would go back to half and move every now and then. The vehicle is at 83000. So far the the gauge is somewhat working but is very frustrating knowing that this can be a $500 repair since it will involve the gas tank. This can make for a bad situation if the gauge completely fails.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,

2008 HYUNDAI SANTA FE with 60000.0 miles

The fuel level sensors began to malfunction as soon as the 30 day warranty from the dealership expired, right around the 60k mile mark in 2012. We began to see that the fuel gage would not indicate whether or not there was any fuel, and the check engine light began to come on, and eventually stay on. We began to have to count miles to ensure we didn't run out of gas and become stranded. I checked online and found a significant amount of complaints for the same issue, yet no recall from Hyundai. This year, we need to have a smog check in order to renew our dmv registration. Well, since the check engine light is permanently lit, the car did not pass the smog check. The only reasons listed on the diagnostic test were the 3 fuel level sensor malfunctions: P0463, P0464 and P2068. So, now we are forced to pay an enormous amount of money to fix it in order to successfully complete the registration with the dmv. Not only is the unfair, it is unethical for Hyundai to not issue a recall for something that is clearly a manufacturing issue, and nothing to do with the "normal wear and tear" that comes with owning a vehicle. This problem has been continuous since november of 2012 until today, october 24, 2014. If they do not issue a recall, i will be pursuing a lawsuit against Hyundai for the reimbursement of the cost to fix this problem.

When the vehicle is filled up with gas the fuel gauge goes to zero and the engine service light comes on and the codes generated are P2067, P0463 and P0464. At some point the gauge begins working properly again but the accuracy of the gauge is in question. There is a safety concern since the vehicle could run out of gas at any time leaving the user stranded in bad weather or in a dangerous traffic situation. This problem is not isolated, judging from similar complaints on the internet, it appears that the parts used for the fuel level indication are unreliable and a recall is needed to resolve this safety issue. The problem occurs at fill up and driving has no effect on this issue and has been happening to my vehicle over the last couple of months but seems to be getting worse as time goes on. .

After a period of time where i noticed the fuel gauge acting erratically (occasionally widely swinging) the check engine light eventually illuminated. Dealer service found code P0464: "inspected cluster for any loose connections or damage, no issue found with cluster or wiring. Removed the sending units and found send units out of spec when moving by hand and ohm senders. Replaced both sending units and cleared codes."

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,

2008 HYUNDAI SANTA FE with 78000.0 miles

2008 Hyundai Santa Fe, 78k miles. Fuel gage reading starting bouncing around. Showed half full on a freshly filled tank. Eventually check engine light came on. Error code P0464 (fuel level sensor 'a' electrical circuit was intermittent for a predetermined period of time.). Fuel sensors required replacement. An inaccurate fuel reading is a safety concern, just like any other issue that can lead to unexpected vehicle shutdown. The numerous reports on the web concerning the failure of the fuel sensors in the 2008 Santa Fe suggests strongly that a recall is warranted.

Leaving my home to travel out of town, the engine light came on. After having a diagnostic test completed i was told the sensors in the gas tank are malfunctioning (P0464) and this is a known issue with 2007 Hyundai sante fe models. The gauge telling me how much gas i have is not reading correctly due to the sensor malfunction and can cause me to run out of gas at any time. The dealer refuses to do anything about it without charging me a $98 "diagnostic fee" even though the diagnostic was done elsewhere. I have an extended warranty on this vehicle but they refuse to honor that as well.
ENGINE,

2007 HYUNDAI SANTA FE with 82000.0 miles

The fuel level gauge changes randomly. Check engines codes P0463, P0464, P2068 indicates a fuel level sensor failure. This is issue has occurred on other car manufacturers potentially using the same sensor system. There have been no recalls issued for this problem. The owner will not be able to know the accurate fuel level of the vehicle. This may cause tank overfilling and potentially safety and environmental issues. This is very expensive to repair ($1000) and is not covered by Hyundai after the 5 year warranty.
