• Recall 59317 [USA]: Loss of brake fluid can lead to a decrease in brake line pressure and an increase in stopping distance, which can result in a vehicle crash.
  Certain aftermarket brake hydraulic master cylinders sold as replacement brake cylinders for certain ford, daimlerchrysler, and jeep passenger vehicles. These brake cylinders were sold under the brand names of napa, raybestos, aimco, ac delco, carquest, bendix, and wagner. Only products that were manufactured from july 27, 2005 through january 17, 2006 (date codes 0529 through 0602) are subject to this recall. When subject to very cold temperatures, an internal seal in the master cylinder could lose flexibility and may cause brake fluid to leak.

  Certain aftermarket replacement fuel filters, models wix filter part numbers 33576, 33577, 33734; napa filter part numbers 3576, 3577, 3734; and carquest filter part numbers 86576, 86577, 86734 used on 1996-2000 daimlerchrysler town & country, dodge caravan, and plymouth voyager vehicles, can cause the fuel lines to leak.

  Vehicle description: mini vans built with 3.3l and 3.8l engines have fuel rails with nitrole rubber o-ring seals that can degrade over time. Fuel leakage from the underhood fuel injection fuel rail could result, increasing the likelihood of a vehicle fire.

  Vehicle description: multipurpose passenger vehicles equipped with integral child seats. This is not a safety recall in accordance with federal regulation 573. However, it is deemed a safety improvement campaign by the agency. On the integral child seat, the shoulder belts restraining the child retract and lock in place after the belt buckle is connected to the latch plate. The latch plate movement locks the belts to make sure the child is restrained in the case of a vehicle crash.

  On certain vehicles equipped with the 3.3l or 3.8l engine the nitrile "o-ring" seals used in the fuel rail may degrade over time and extended exposure to elevated temperatures. This could result in fuel leakage, and, in the presence of an ignition source, an underhood fire could occur. Correction: external seals will be installed at both of the fuel rail crossover tube joints. If the crossover tube joints are leaking or red rust exists in the area, the fuel rail assembly must be replaced.

  Note: vehicles equipped with an integrated child seat. The integrated child seat safety belt latch mechanism may become contaminated causing the seat belt release mechanism to stick and prevent the retractor from releasing. This may result in difficulty removing a child from the restraint. Correction: child seat latch plate mechanism will be inspected and cleaned. An extender will be added to the emergency release anchor for the child seat safety belts so that the release clips are more visible and accessible to the operator.   An electrostatic charge may build up in the vehicle's plastic fuel tank and ungrounded fuel filler tube during normal operation. Under the right low temperature, low humidity and low fuel level conditions, the static charge on the fuel filler tube may cause a spark to occur while fueling the vehicle which could result in a fire. Correction: a fuel filler ground strap will be installed on affected vehicles.

• Fuel tank leaks investigation as of 19970131

  This engineering analysis was opened on january 31, 1997 based on information gathered during preliminary evaluation (pe), pe96-051. The pe was opened on august 19, 1996, to investigate allegations of fuel leakage from the area where the fuel pump/sending unit joins the fuel tank.For brevidy, this area will be referred to as the pump/tank interface.These allegations were first received by odi on august 2, 1996 while investigating allegations of chrysler minivan throttle shaft hand-up, and uncontrolled engine speed, in pe96-036.While discussing that issue with a fleet, it was alleged that at least 10(out of 40) 1996 early production chrysler minivans leaked fuel from the pump/tank interface.Analysis of the complaint and warranty data indicate fuel tank leakage incidents in the subject vehicles predominatly affected early production vehicles.The data involving confirmed incidents of tank/pump interface leaks suggest that those failures have been declining since july 1996.Odi has received no reports of the subject condition involving original equipment pumps and tanks since september, 1997.Currently this isssue does not reqresent a continuing field concern.Odi will continue to monitor the subject vehicles for fuel leaks of any type.A safety related defect trend has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resoured does not appear to be warranted.The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety related defect exists.The agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

• Integrated child seat belt lockup investigation as of 19960918

  Odi continues to receive complaints alleging latching/retractor mechanism problems.Chryslers assessment of the problem indicates that owners of the vehicles are not adhering to the cleaning requirements for the seat.The seat appears to malfunction if crumbs of food or beverage residue accumulates on the latching tongue in thewell located between the childs legs.Odi has 19 complaints of retract lockup.Seven of these complaints report cutting the straps to remove the child.Two of the seven consumers allege the child was choking.Chrysler reports 60 owner/field reports which indicated 19 harnesses were cut to remove the children.Additional information is needed to fully assess the safety consequence of the alleged defect and to evaluate the chrysler corporations rational for not conducting a safety recall campaign.

My minivan has been not wanting to start, the speedometer has been jumping all over the place . I had my fuel pump and filter replaced in december 2014 due to it not starting. Now within the last 2 weeks or so it started to act like it was going to die as i would be driving and sometimes it would jump out of gear. All this last week it has been giving me problems with starting and every time i would get out of the van it would smell like somethings burning. When i turn the key to start it all you could hear is a click, try to start it a couple more times and finally get it to start. Today it wouldn't start no matter how many times i tried to start it. I open the hood and looked at the battery and one terminal looks like it is burnt. *tr

I was driving on the highway in the pouring down rain when my windshield wipers stopped working, i could hear the windshield wiper motor still going but the wiper arms would not move. We had pulled off the highway but there was nothing around for miles. We got back on the highway and my son would push the wiper arm down when it had went to his side so we could drive a little further to pull off the freeway in an occupied area. It had stopped raining and as we were driving the engine completely died on us, it would not start back up. My minivan had to be towed from a town over 50 miles from where we live. I had my children in the minivan with me and it was a really terrifying ordeal. *tr

The vehicle was taken to a local tire facility where the tires were replaced, but failure was located at the front motor mount connector. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but the vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileage was 137,308.

Transmission stopped worked, electrical cluster waving back and forth before and after transmission repair, newly installed transmission broke down 5 days after installation, repair shop claims electrical system not working properly and is cause of transmission breakdown. *tr

When coasting through left hand turns only engine and all electrical components shut off for 1 to 4 seconds causing power steering not to work and braking reduced. This does not happen when accelerating through left turns or coasting through right hand turns. *tr

Rear axle spit in two while driving at 50 mph on back road, lucky not on highway. Tires slammed into wheel wells, caught on fire almost, lots of smoke. Could not control vehicle well, and went off the road at approx 25 mph and hit a bunch of small trees, injured both knees, refused ambulance transport. Car was towed to my garage and axle replaced with junkyard part and vehicle is back on the road. Scary incident ,could have been worse or fatal if this happened on a highway instead of a local road. Axle tube is just thick sheet metal, not really an iron pipe like you would think, very flimsy. Have nice pictures ifyou are interested. Should recall this flimsy axle. *tr

1996 chryler town and country seat back collapse in rear end collision causing children in second row seats to be injured or killed!

Tl* the contact owns a 1996 chrysler town and country. The contact was driving 25 mph when the steering wheel became very difficult to maneuver. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where they advised the contact that the serpentine belt detached from the vehicle and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken to the dealer a total of six times due to the recurring detachment of the serpentine belt. The contact stated that the serpentine belt would detach whenever the weather was rainy or if it became wet. The vehicle was not further repaired. The failure mileage was 150,000 and the current mileage was 153,000.

Tl*the contact owns a 1996 chrysler town and country. The contact stated that the serpentine belt would not remain in place on the pulley in her vehicle. The belt has been replaced at least three times. The contact had to replace the tension pulley and the water pump pulley to keep the serpentine belt secure. There are only two belts left to be replaced and they are currently working properly. The manufacturer stated that there was no recall for this component; therefore, they could not assist. The failure mileage was 115,619.

The 1996 town & country van lost its heat..Unknown to me, it was losing anti freeze also. I took it to local mechanic and they said i better fix it then. Or my motor would burn up a hose connects to radiator to heater core...Metal. It cost me 60/00 to solve this problem. *tr

The serpentine belt on my 1996 chrysler town & country lxi, makes a loud squeal and then falls off a week later. When driving in rain and going over a puddle the serpentine belt falls off this has happened so many times that i have installed brackets one by the tensioner and one by the pulley. The immediate & dangerous result is loss of power steering and power brakes next is water pump fails causing engine to over heat so unless you have a spare belt in your van at the time and the tools to change it you are let stranded. *tr

The serpentine belt on our 1996 chrysler town & country lxi, makes a horrible screeching sound, that we've almost come to appreciate, when faced with it's alternative silence, when the serpentine belt gets wet & slips off. The immediate & dangerous result is loss of power steering, leaving the driver surprised with their inability to safely maneuver the van. Within less than a minute, a fast hazard bell sounds & the engine temperature sensor is pinned at hot. If the driver is quick, strong, & lucky enough, to get the family "safely" off the road, before the water pump fries, stalling the van in traffic, they are now left stranded. We've had the serpentine belt & tensioner pulley replaced twice, the last time at chrysler, and still the problem has not been corrected. We've checked for recalls but chrysler states that this is not a life threatening failure, so no recall has been made. This has happens to us often enough that we keep a wrench in our van, so my husband can attempt to retrieve & re-seat the belt onto the tensioner, in the pouring rain. We've read many complaints about this same problem & can't understand why chrysler doesn't think loss of steering & sudden heat pump failure is not life threatening. If one of their ceos were to find themselves struggling their family van quickly off the road, standing over, or even lying under their engine, in the pouring rain, while the rest of the family hopes that he isn't injured making the repair, hit by lightening, or by a distracted driver, perhaps they would recall this system. We've spent a lot of time & money on repairs, & have come across an off-market product designed to fix this specific, widely recognized chrysler product issue, and just purchased it. We find it disgusting to see that the possibility of this problem being addressed may depend on the number of deaths, or persons injured, before chrysler takes any responsibility. We were stranded in charlotte, north carolina 70 miles from home until after midnight when a friend came and drove us home. We left our van in a parking lot overnight. We are hoping that it is not vandalized or stolen when we go today to repair it. When this belt comes off, power steering is gone, which can cause an accident leading to serious injury or death. This is a common problem that all automobile mechanics and chrysler van owners know about, but chrysler refuses to acknowledge the problem. The fix is an aftermarket parts kit by gates (part number 38379k) and goodyear (parts number 49215k) that the consumer must bear the entire expense of installing. *tr

Passenger side liftgate gas charged support shock mounting bolt failed where shock mounts to the body and the liftgate crashed down on a persons head. This dangerous safety problem that could have seriously injured a small child appears to be related to bolt stress/fatigue since there was no obvious evidence of any corrosion around this mounting bolt. *tr

The vehicle was traveling westbound when it hit the left lane guardrail at 65 mph, then spun to the right shoulder lane and hit the other guardrail head on. It then came to a halt upon spinning 180 degrees facing the south part of the highway. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 1996 chrysler town and country. The contact stated that the brakes failed while driving 15 mph. When the brakes where applied, the contact heard a pop and the brake pedal went completely to the floor. The vehicle was towed. The dealer stated that the brake hoses were not standard parts due to the modification of the brakes for medical handicap purposes. There were two holes in the hoses because the parts were not standard, which caused the brake failure. The current and failure mileages were 75,000.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 45 mph on normal road conditions, the serpentine belt fractured. No warning lights alerted the contact but loss of power steering was noticed. The vehicle had been taken three times to the dealership and the belts, pulleys and tensioner were replaced on every occurrence. The manufacturer was contacted but the resolution was a dealership referral. The contact expressed concern because the loss of power steering could create conditions for a serious accident.

My specific on the problem is with our 1996 chrysler town & country minivan and specifically airbag light on, horn/cruise not working. In searching the internet, i see that this is indicative of the clockspring being faulty. While i find the chrysler has a program in place to repair minivans with this problem, the information leads me to understand that this is only for cars with less than 70,000 mile on them - as our vehicle is now 9 years old, it is unreasonable to expect the odometer be at under 70,000 miles. I feel that this is unreasonable, in that the defect renders the airbag useless. I will be contacting the local dealer, however, if this 70,000 miles restriction is in place, and purse remedy of the situation. If the nhtsa has knowledge of this restriction, i would ask that the nhtsa direct chrysler to cover any vehicle having this defect, regardless of mileage. *jb

Headlight lens covers were replaced by dealer due to bubbling of the plastic that caused severe reducion inheadlight lumination. The cost to me was $644.00 for replacement. This is a safety hazard that should not have occurred.

Last week, 17 aug 05, i had to replace the fuel tank on my '96 chrysler t&c [xxx] due to a fatigue crack that was spilling fuel. Chrysler has refused to accept any responsibility since my vehicle is out of warranty. Are there any requirements regarding the longevity and performance of plastic fuel tanks? Other than the obvious safety concerns, the replacement cost exceeded $800. At the time of failure my vehicle had 180,885 original miles and has been meticulously maintained. The location of the crack (top, front, left corner) precludes any accidental impact of the undercarriage. According to the servicing dealer, hayes chrysler, lawrenceville, ga, the defective tank was destroyed per environmental requirements. Failure of both rear brake hydraulic lines causing sudden loss of brake fluid making emergency brake only operable stopping device. Saved old lines. Both lines appear to have rusted through. Mechanic believes problem is with design in how lines are routed above gas tank approximately two feet ahead of left rear wheel. The position of the lines allows road salt and other corrosives to be collected on the steel surface of the hydraulic lines, thus leading to their eminent failure. Please note low mileage of vehicle. Mechanic repaired vehicle by installing new lines, but routed them in a position less susceptible to corrosion. Failure was preceded by noticeable leaking of brake fluid on garage floor. Ultimate failure occurred when vehicle was brought in for inspection/repair. Lines burst when mechanic tested brakes by pressing hard on brake pedal while it was parked. Brake fluid spilled out all over service floor. Actual repair cost: $289.02.*jb *nm

When operating vehicle the check engine light will intermittently go on, then the windshield wipers will turn on (without me turning them on), the fan on the heater will turn on(if it is off) or off (if it is on). This has happened numerous times over the last year. More recently in the last 8 months or so the heater is only blowing warm/hot air on the passenger side of the vehicle and cold air on the drivers side. It is the same for the defrost. *jb

On a few seperate occasions while driving my 1996 chrysler town and country my daughters seatbelt has just released without any warning. During 3 sudden stops the seatbelts have unlatched by themselves and one time while driving down the road my seatbelt came undone after i adjusted myself in my seat. We just bought this van 2 months ago. Also, without warning the body control module took out my entire electrical system, including my radio. There should be a sensor that it is going bad before it actually goes. Even after going to jack powell dodge to have it all fixed, the horn doesn't work , the stereo is messing up, the instrument cluster is messing up, and the windshield wipers don't seem to work properly.

I have a 96 chrysler t&c van the transmission was replaced almost 30 months and 38 k miles ago after it broke a shaft on the inside at 101k miles. Came to a stop at conner went to go forwarded and the van was in neutral in gear position. Dealer did not want to open it up just replace with new remanufactured from chrysler. Said they were all doing that. Now the replacement unit just broke a shaft for the third gear (bad weld). This is on a transmission with only 38525 miles on it. This was a new transmission when it came out in 1996 and now with 2 broken shafts on two transmissions in the same van, what is wrong with their product and this picture? Who would of tunk it? I placed 165k miles on a 1991 dodge dakota without any transmission problems. What happens if the shafts break when someone is trying to get on the highway in front of 70,000 lbs of moving truck? Trucks do not stop on a dime. Do you want your family in that kind of scenario? I do not think that most of voting americans do either. I live in a city, which has at seven out of the top ten of the most dangerous intersections in the entire state of alabama. When you place a car into drive, you expect it to go most all the time. You do not want to have to think am i going to be in an accident or maybe kill my family because the transmission is going to blow up, breaks welds, or break a shafts if i pull out now or not. *jb

Outside brake disc pads prematurely worn, inside pads virtually untouched. Replaced all pads, one disc, and turned other disc. The actual problem is caused by extremely poorly designed calipers. Outside pad in constant contact with disk. Releasing brake pedal does not remove pad away from disk. This specific problem is not caused by a malfunctioning part, as far as i can see. The entire caliper design appears to be flawed.*ak

This problem has been checked three times but the dealer said they seem correct. The passenger seat broke. The starter failed and as a result the vehicle would not start. The steering pump failed and as a result the steering wheel became tight when making turns. The rear heater lines were leaking. The water pump leaked. *nm

While driving headlights fogged up, causing limited sight on both sides of the vehicle, and making it very hard to drive at night. Chrysler has known about the differential pin problems in it's 41/te(a604) transmission for years. The remedy of proper lubrication is simple. They refuse to fix it and refuse to help owners who must pay for the repairs. These transmission need to be recalled and repaired before they break and knock a hole in the side of the transmission case creating a very expensive repair. I can give you the details of my individual case if you require it.

I purchased a 1996 chrysler town & country lxi from a used car lot "as is".The vehicle had supposedly had a 29 point service inspection.The next day i had the transmission checked due to leaking fluid from the front seal.The differential pin was broken with aluminum shavings in the pan and the filter was laying there loose.It appears that the previous owner had transmission service performed,saw the shavings and parked the van until it could be traded in.There was a light rust cover on the brake rotors to indicate it had been parked.I caught it just in time before the pin broke thru the aluminum case which would have cost an additional $500.00.The aamco dealer has so many of these vehicles with the same problem that they have a broken one on display in their showroom.The mechanic showed me how easy it would be to prevent this problem by getting the proper lubrication to the pin.The modifications he makes to do just that are the reason they can offer a lifetime warranty on the repairs.Chrysler could do the same if they were interested in preventing this problem but the lure of the parts sales must be a better payoff.

Vehicle experienced perforation corrosion in passenger side strut tower as described in chryslertsb 23-044-02. Corrosion originated in factory holes covered with rubberized tape and threatens the structural integrity of the mount. Vehicle is no longer under warranty and chrysler will not repair.*ak

The vin for this vehicle is: [xxx] car suffered fuel line breakage after driving through a large puddle. Was towed to o'hara chrysler-plymouth dealer(clinton, mi) for repairs, which the fuel line damage was determined. Inquired with the service rep, [xxx], as to why since owning the vehicle. The maximum tank fill-up was 13.0 - 13.4 gallons, whereas the service manual states 18 gallons. "[xxx]" stated that there was a tendency of the tank to bow-in, that would either reduce the fuel sensor accuracy or reduce the volume. A new tank carried a different part number than the original. Since this vehicle was assembled on january 11, 1996 and there is a nhtsa technical service bulletin #140895 issued on january 1, 1996. Am i covered by this and was i charged for a known defect? The vehicle rolled backwards while parked on a hill with the emergency parking brake engaged. *jb

Entire vehicle electrical system shuts down without warning while driving, causing loss of engine power, power steering, and power brakes. This is extraordinarily dangerous during any but the slowest, straight ahead driving, as it results in a nearly complete loss of maneuverability. In the event of such a complete shutdown the vehicle cannot be effectively accelerated, braked, or turned, and lights and windshield wipers also fail. Furthermore, the windshield wiper delay malfunctions continuously in cold weather, resulting in complete loss of wiper function at times. Multiple attempts at diagnosis and repair, including some parts replacement by the dealer, have failed to eliminate any of the aforementioned problems.

Intermittent loss of speed. Transmission stucks at lower gear. Vehicle runs fine for a while and suddenly jumps to lower gear, bringing the van to a sudden low speed. Luckly escaped from a major accident while overtaking a truck on highway at the speed of 70miles/hr. Showed the vehicle to chrysler dealer. They just kept the van for long time and replace a piece of wire and said its good to go. But problem came back again after a week. Now they say all wiring has to be replaced which could cost me like $1700 to $1800. I'm the second owner and i take good care of this van, changing fluids, filters & stuff. If this is engineering mistake by chrysler with their transmisson, then shouldn\\'t they take care of this issue. I spoke to chrysler customer service and they said since this van is out of the warranty they are not responsible. Thanks.

Transmission failed at 74,000, putting a big hole through the transmission case. Transmission was a604. (at 64,000 the transmission cooler lines were replaced because they were leaking. A month later noticed some leakage but dealer couldn't find anything and told us to keep an eye on it, didn't notice anything until leakage and failure at 74,000) also a/c has leak somewhere, would be very expensive to find and fix.*ak

Soon after starting the car, the passenger power seat motor began to spontaneously smoke, emitting a putrid odor. After traveling approximately 2 miles (10 min in traffic) the smoke increased to the point that the whole compartment of the vehicle was filled. At that point the vehicle was parked and the engine was shut off. All passengers (two mothers and four children 3 or younger) evacuated the vehicle. The smoke continued to worsen and ultimately the fire department was notified. A fire extinguisher was used and after about twenty minutes all smoke stopped. The manufacturer was notified and recently claimed they had no responsibility or liability in the matter. *jb

On numerous occasions the vehicle will intermittently fail to shift into o/d. It may drive fine for days and then lock in second gear. Manually changing the gearshift does not override the failure. The onboard computer does not log the failure. It does capture the manual shifting event. The only way to correct the probelm is to turn off the van and start it back up. This could correct it for several days or it may recur withing minutes. Totally random. Occurs at any time, night or day. It often occurs during accellerations following turns. This situation is extremely dangerous especially when accellerating onto the freeway during rushhour traffic. We have to pulloff into the emergency lane, shut off the van, restart it up, and merge back into high speed traffic. It is extermrly frightening for my wife especially while transporting my two young boys. The chrysler repair shop could not get it to fail and thus nothing was done. Aamco looked at the transmission and indicated the transmission and fluids were fine. They also could not get the transmission to fail.

The vehicles plastic tank collapsed on the inside. This resulted in incorrect fuel level reading. *nlm the dealer replaced the pump at no charge but the sending unit in the tank has the same reading. The dealer had the fuel tank down, and stated that the tank was sagged, and possibly caused the false reading. Chrysler sent out letters about the problem but when the consumer called the dealer, they stated that this was a manufacturer problem. *scc

1996 chrysler town & country lxi mini-van parked at an off-airport parking lot was totalled due to a fire originating in the engine compartment. The vehicle was parked at approx 8:00 am. At approx. 1:00 am the following morning, parking attendants noticed vehicle on fire. Fire department called, responded and extinguished the fire by approx 3:00 am. Fire department foreman responding says fire originated in the engine compartment and suspected that it started from a engine compartment fuse box near the battery. Vehicle deemed a complete loss due to the extent of the fire.

1996 chrysler t&c minivan with 78,000 miles, being operated by wife, broke down in heavy rush hour traffic with kids onboard. The serpentine belt broke due to faulty belt tensioner. The belt had been replaced only two months previously as part of preventative maintenance schedule (just to avoid exactly what happed). Mechanic indicated that chrysler t&c tensioners were prone to premature failure causing shredding of the serpentine belt. Belt affects power steering, cooling fan, charging system, etc. Wife, who weighs in at 95 lbs, lost all steering ability and was left stranded in middle of rush hour traffic with two kids until good samaritan arrived and 'manhandled' van off the roadway.

Diferential sheer pin broke off traveling into right axle damaging same, then traveling thru transmission, damaging same, finally exiting through trans case. (this all happened while my wife was in a drive thru lane) this veh. Is babied and driven solely by my wife. We are being told by several sources that this is a common problem. Can you verify this?? Left front strut mounting plate has rusted thru allowing the strut to penetrate into the engine compartment. This is the only area of rust on the entire vehicle. Chrysler service personel and multiple mechanics have indicated this is a condition they would expect to see on a vehicle 20 - 25 years old; not 6 years old.

This vehicle had an earlier recall concerning fuel leaking where the fuel pump was mounted to the tank. Repairs were made according to the recall. It seems that a fuel tank should not just start leaking for no apparent reason (there was no physical damage to the fuel tank). The tank is to be replaced by the local chrysler dealer for a sum of $700 plus. This is a very serious safety issue in which a fire could easily occur. If this is a common occurence, it should be taken care of by the chrysler corporation. Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter.

Car stalls while driving. Seems more prevalent when backing up, turning a corner or slowing down, yet has also happened at high speeds on freeway. When it stalls, the steering wheel locks, and does not gain control until the car is restarted. Almost $1000 of repairs to try and fix the problem.

Driver side air bag warning lamp illuminated so probably not working, speed control will not engage, horn sounds when the steering wheel is turned to certain angles while driving, front windshiled wiper makes uncommanded start-up and shuts itself down, automatic seat and mirror adjustment settings become lost on a daily basis. Contacted dealer and they said they could fix it but we would be responsible for the charge and they were not sure it if would be the same problem as what is being investigated in the recall. I purchased a used 1996 chrysler town & country van with a 2 year extended warranty. Shortly after purchasing vehicle, i noticed a whirring sound followed by hesitation when putting van into drive or reverse. Dealership where i made purchase took van for a test drive and reported to me that that was normal. I went in again about a year later, while it was still under warranty, and complained of the same problem. This time they put it through some diagnostic testing and concluded no problem. I have this in writing. Well one year and one month to the date the transmission went. No longer under warranty, i had to pay for the repairs, they, however did not get my money. I took them to small claims, but lost. According to click and clack, as long as it was complained about under warranty they are still obligated to fix it. I did forget about complaining to the dealership about this matter. I remembered after picking my van up from trans. Shop. That's why i took the dealership to court. This van has been nothing but a failure since i bought it. I have kept up the oil changes and maintenance as needed. The paint is coming of off the grill and the paint on the rest of the van is not holding up. There have been 2 transmission failures with this vehicle. One at 58,000 miles and the other at 86,700 miles. Chrysler assisted in payment on the first failure and would not on the second. There apears to be secret warranty for some who take the time to complain. The safety issue is stoppage on the highway. We are lucky to be in a smaller town and traffice is slower and less of it. The secondary concern is the cost. We have spent $2800 in repairs to the transmission. The reputation is so bad that we have looked at making a trade of this vehicle and the first thing mentioned by the salesman was "hows the transmission'? So we pay for the factory defect again in resale value. The situation was discussed with the local dealer and the company with no assistance. I would have never expected 100% repayment as i did use the van for transportation. The second report is the windshield wipers coming on at the worst time. Like a sunny day in traffic! Too much fidiling around to make them stop is distracting. They may be fixed now with the second multi function switch. It was worse when cold. We are very disapointed in our investment made and the dealer that made the repair. I think they are sheding 25000 employees - i wonder why!!!

Vehicle stalled while being driven and would not restart

Rear lead spring broke, causing the rear axle to slide back and the tire to rub on the back of the wheel well. When the spring was removed it was obvious that the spring had been broken 3/4 of the way previously. It was rusted at the broken spot and appeared to have black paint on the inside of the crack.

Brakes squeaked, transmission slips out of gear when coming to a stop and the transmission pump is leaking, sometime do not shift into high gear, inspect engine and discovered excessive dripping from the vicinity of the fuel injection system. Intake manifold gasket was leaking/repaired.

Fuel rail - nhtsa campaign id # 00v268000. Dealer does not show record of this recall, nor does diamler chrysler recall line (800) 853-1403. Fuel is leaking onto the engine block from crack(s) in the fuel rail. Dealer will not repair free of charge, will charge full repair costs. Jack extension - the jack that comes with the minivan has a small "extendor" piece that fits into the jack then into the designated place on the frame in order to jack the car up. When i jacked up the van using these pieces, the van slipped off the jack/extension piece, damaging the running board (and narrowly missing my head!). It appears there is supposed to be a cotter pin to hold the extension piece onto the jack, but this was not included.

Turn signals defective, repaired 3 times before corrected. Following last repair horn stopped working as did driver side window.*ak

Transmission failure @ 70,000 miles needing complete rebuild for $1,600 - even though the transmission had been serviced by chrysler in jan. 1999 @ 38,249 miles. Both the chrysler dealer in west virginia (location of failure) and the selling (home) chrysler dealer knew immediately what the problem was when first hearing about it: "my guess would be plannetaries are completely stripped" was the chrysler wv mechanic comment upon just looking at the van. Spoke with many town & country owners since - this is a very common occurence on town & country - how can there not be either a recall or a class action suit with that many known failures on a known weak component ? On 11/14 or 15/2001 i noticed the smell of gasoline from the engine compartment of my car. It was stronger when i opened my hood. I called a mechanic to my house to diagnose the problem. He determined that the fuel rails were leaking. I determined that such a problem afflicted other 1996 town and country vehicles. I contacted my local chrysler dealer who would only state that my vehicle had no outstanding recalls. When i specifically mentioned recall 00v268000 they refused to confirm such a problem or recall existed. I then called chrysler customer service. They too told me that no recall was outstanding on my vehicle. They also refused to confirm that such a problem existed on 1996 chrysler town and country vehicles, but also told me that just because it was on nhtsa's web page doesn't mean it's a recall. Both the dealer and chrysler refused to provide any help with this repair or any information. *ak

Cylinder head towers supporting rocker arm assemblies on both cylinder heads cracked and cylinder heads had to be replaced. Mechanic stated he had seen this on at least two other chrysler 3.8l v-6 engines. Replacement cylinder heads had beefed up towers. Chrysler refused to pay for replacements as warranty was for 60,000 miles and problem was not diagnosed until 64,000 miles. *nlm

The car was in cruise control on i-95 at 70 mph. The speed suddenly jumped to 80 mph and would have gone higher if i hadn't applied the brakes. The rpm reached 4000, and the only way i was able to gain control was to cut off the ignition. This is a safety hazard and could have resulted in a very bad accident. Plastic fuel tank has developed a crack along the top (per dealer). I did notice on one or two occasions that the tank bottom developed a concave appearance. The dealer has offered to replace the fuel tank for approx. $800 with no guarantee that the replacement tank won't fail for the same reason the original tank has. I would be intereseted in hearing from you about the safety record and longevity of plastic gas tanks. I have never owned a vehicle in which the gas tank has developed a crack. *ak

While driving on us378 between saluda and lexington, sc, as i drove uphill on an undivided highway, the vehicle speed began to increase, reaching over 85 miles per hour with my foot off the accelerator. I braked back to about 25 miles per hour, but when i released the brake, the vehicle again sped to over 80 mph. I pulled over and tried to place the vehicle in park, but the engine raced. I turned it off, but it continued to run, apparently "dieseling" for several seconds. I restarted the vehicle and made it to the dealer by riding the brake and driving in the lowest gear. I sincerely believe that had my wife or teenage son who recently started driving been behind the wheel they would have completely lost control. I was fortunate that the brakes had been replaced about a month earlier and managed to hold the vehicle, though it required both feet and most of my 220 pounds on the brake. The dealer said that a cable had broken causing the throttle to stick. I have heard similar stories about this happening to this same model vehicle. It is inexcusable that the throttle should suddenly stick with no warning, especially at whatever setting it is at when the cable breaks. At the least, the throttle should return to normal idle if the cable breaks. This is extremely dangerous, and, in my opinion, warrants a modification to prevent this highly dangerous situation before fatalities occur. Had the throttle stuck at a higher setting, i could not have controlled the vehicle or wouldn't have had time to react. *ak *tr

There was fuel leaking in a drizzle out of the end of the front of the fule rail assembly onto the valve cover where it accumulates into a puddle of gas on the valve cover lip then spilled onto the exhaust header. It is certainly is a major fire hazard. Could have burned my house down. It did not catch on fire in my case by pure luck. It appears to leak at a crack in the joint on the fuel rail at a point where the metel fuel line between the front and back of the fuel rail assemply meet in the front and enters the fuel injection rail assembly in the front of the engine. Chrysler dealer states this is not part of any recall, yet other recall exist for the same year and engine and they have been recalled. I have received no notices on this issue for recall. If this problem recalled and is their a reference please let me know. If not this is very dangerous. Thank you.

Abs light stays on, and horn/ cruise control do not work. Rear a/c unit for the passengers only work on high speed. Consumer spoke with service technician over the phone, and technician indicated it could possibly be the clock spring.*ak

Air bag light comes on intermittentley without prior warning. Dealership is aware of problem, it is the clock spring. *ak

The instrument panel air bag indicator light comes on due to srs air bag assembly failure. *yh

Both power locks on side doors do not function and both doors do not latch securely. Doors can be opened even when security alarm is armed.

My cruise control is intermittent, my airbag light comes on intermittenly, might windshield wipers come on intermittently. Horn sporadically does not work.*ak

The trashy transmission has been rebuilt twice, and when it downshifts from 4th gear to second gear, it gives a big push, a push big enough for u to hit someone from behind if you do not have your foot firmly on the brake pedal. Also, the emergency break is the kind you push down with your foot, and it just springs back up when you step on it.The transmission type is 41te, and i have doen my research on it. Chrsyler needs to do something, but what i am telling you is safety related.*ak (tiresize: 205/65/r16)

Clock spring failure just like the ones that failed on several friends chrysler mini-vans. This causes the horn to stop, airbag light to come on, and the cruise control to stop working. This is a safety item and the nhtsa need to investigate chrysler on this and go public!!!!

I wasn't involved in an accident. The van could have burned up though if i hadn't caught the problem of gas leaking onto the hot exhaust system. The defect was not immediately noticeable, it didn't cause obvious engine or operating difficulties and there were no warnings of fuel leaking from the on board trouble warning system. I caught the problem when i drove into my attached garage, turned off the engine and got out of the van.. I smelled gas, backed the van out of the garage, raised the hood with the engine running and observed the raw gas pouring out of two places on the engine. As it was the labor day weekend i left the van outside and used our other car. I'm a realtor with century 21 and an associate in our office had his dodge mini-van catch fire and burn up last year and now i wonder if this isn't a common problem with this series chrysler products. My home could have burned to the ground had i not obseved the gas smell and got the van out of the garage. Had we been asleep in the house my wife and i could have both been burned to death. Even if we were just driving and happened to be involved in an accident the van would be more likely to catch fire from the leaking gas and we might have been trapped in it. We're both in our 70's. The repairs cost $221.47 and because there seems to be a demand for the replacement fuel rail & injector o-rings it took the dealer several days to get the parts from chrysler. Does this not suggest there's a problem*ak

Fuel was leaking from the fuel rail causing fuel fumes to enter passenger compartment. A recall has been issued on the vehicle.*ak while driving, the fumes continued to come into the vehicle. Took the vehicle to the dealer and found that the fuel rail was leaking *yh

Fuel rail is cracked. There is a recall on vehicle for this problem, but vin is not included. Fuel leaks from o rings of fuel rail. Contacted dealer, and dealer is not willing to do anything. *ak *jb

Air bag light keeps coming on and staying on. Contacted dealer, and the dealer stated that the air bag will not come out when light is on. *ak

I bought this vehicle used at 68,000 miles. Transmission self-destructed after i put 9,000 miles on it.*ak

There are some problems with steering. When taken vehicle to dealer, dealer noted that serpentine belt and steering belt tensioner are defective. *ak

Airbag clock spring material causes blinkers and other electrical components to malfunction. Dealer has been contacted. Please provide further details.*ak

Without warning vehicle shifts down to a lower gear at highway speeds, causing vehicle to drop 15 to 20 mph. Vehicle has been repaired by the dealer. However problem has reoccurred. Please provide additional information.*ak

Inside sidewall on left front wheel suddenly split away. On four different occasions while driving the transmission suddenly downshipt without any warning to a lower gear causing the speed of the car to immediately drop from 65-70 mph to 50mph or less and on other occassion the transmission lockup, problem diagnosed as relay control for tcm, replaced, to no avail. Transmission leaks oil and other fluid, replace shat seal,gasket and resealed pan. Replace fuel gas tank to achieve reliable fuel gauge measurement. Steering locks up especially on hard left turn, replace rack and pinion.
