  Mr. Larry a. Sackey submitted a petition to the national highway traffic safety administration (nhtsa) by letter dated april 18, 2003, requesting that nhtsafurther investigate the "defective collapsible steering shaft system" on 1987-1995 vehicles manufactured by the daimlerchrysler corporation.In part because of 49 cfr § 30120(g), nhtsa has decided to limit the scope of the petition vehicles to 1993-1995 models, excluding the 1993 jeep grand cherokee and 1994-1995 dodge ram series trucks that were recalled (93v210 & 96v230) for steering column failure.If the analysis of these vehicles had identified a potential problem, the scope could have been expanded in an investigation.A review of odis data base shows no recent complaints and a lack of a complaint trend concerning the subject issue on the subject vehicles as a whole or by individual models.Therefore, the petition is denied.For details, see federal register notice volume 68, no. 130, july 8, 2003.

• Frame cracks investigation as of 20020930

  Mr. Edward w. Bailey submitted a petition to the national highway traffic safety administration by letter, undated, requesting that an investigation be conducted into the matter of a frame crack in his 1995 dodge dakota truck.The petitioner alleges that the frame on the passenger side of the vehicle is cracked, through no fault or responsibility of his own, and believes that this deficiency constitutes a safety defect, which he alleges may cause a loss of vehicle control and/or a crash.For the 1993 through 2003 model year dakota trucks, theonly complaints of frame cracking were on the 1995 and 1996 model year vehicles. A review of consumer complaints of frame cracking on the dakota, and peer vehicles, did not reveal any loss of control, crashes, injuries or fatalities.Frame cracking on the dakota trucks occured at an average mileage of93,000. For the reasons stated in thefederal register notice (vol. 68, no. 3, monday, january 6, 2003) the petition is denied.

My daughter's seat belt would not unlatch. She could not get out of the car. She had to leave and drive back home, where her dad was able to get her out with a screw drive. Our mechanic said dodge no longer carries these seat belts.

My daughter, who was the driver, was unable to unlatch her seat belt. Her boyfriend had to force it apart in order for her to be able to exit the car. Now it is broken...She was at a standstill at her boyfriend's house.

Not sure what happened...Just a gradual downfall of the gasket on the windshield that is now completely out of the window on the passenger side in the upper corner..Can see the curve of the gasket out of the window...Its as if it shrunk from one week to the next. *tr

There seemed to be an increasing amount of "play" in the steering. It has now gotten to the point i don't feel comfortable driving this truck long distances. I looked underneath the front end, and the steering rack moves from side to side approximately 1/2 -1". *tr

Pickup was parked in drive way on a thursday evening appros 1700 hrs, on sat appros 1730 hrs the horn sounded and the windows appeared to be tinted, investigation showed the steering column to be ablaze, firedept called and fire extinguished, steering column total loss. Vehicle unusable. Total loss. *tr

I was driving the car at 35 miles an hour up to 45 and the tire came off. It caused a 3 car accident. Luckily ino one was hurt but i got a careless driving ticket. I feel the tire snapped off the drive train. It happened in 2006. It was lightly raining but this should not affect a tire coming off completely.. I can send in police report later i put in a request for a copy but i have not recieved it yet.

My complaint is with the fact that dodge was allowed to put defective seats in the 1995 dodge dakota (as well as other years) without having to make the necessary fix to those vehicles. The seats clearly do not protect against neck injury in rear end collisions. I am the original owner of one of these vehicles. *jb

The vehicle was being parked and when it had come time to get out of the vehicle, the seat belt would not unlatch. The seat belt eventually had to be cut off in order to get the passenger out of the vehicle. *ak *sc *jb

Air bag malfunction on 1995 dodge dakota. *mr the air bag was inoperative, since no one was taking responsibility, the consumer believed the problem may have originated from the factory. The fuel pump was replaced for a third time, the steering column displayed a noise when turning, the left front door lock did not unlock with the key or the remote intermittently, and there was clunking in the front end. Faulty seat belt in 1995 dodge dakota,had to be cut out of seat belt.Told its going to be 300 to 400 to replace.Even though truck is 10 years old i feel it was a defect ready to happen.No warning just put on as usual and tried to unlatch and wouldnt.Had to drive to fire dept and be cut out.

Drivers side seat broke when sitting down and i fell back. Further investigation shows that the bottom bolt and middle screw snapped. Fortunately no one was hurt, but they could have been if i was on a freeway.*ak

The sheet metal on the driver's door is tearing in two places: at the door latch and at the lower hinge. The problem started several weeks ago when it was noted that the driver's door became noticeably more difficult to close. It felt as if hinge was sticking. I tried lubricating it. It didn't help. I also noted that the latch was not working properly. Sometimes when closing the door, the latch would close without latching the door shut. I inspected the latch and saw that the plastic covering the hooking mechanism was chewed up. (the latch post on the doorframe was not loose or out of alignment, it was also chewed up.) i observed that there is a one-inch tear in the sheet metal below the inboard screw that attaches the latch to the door. A similar tear is noted at the lower edge of the lower hinge. I have replaced the latch last week. The new latch is showing premature wear. The door does not close properly. It has opened when the vehicle is in motion.*ak

Transmision doesn't like to up shift from first to second gear unles i let off the throtel. Also truck has roled when in park 5 times.I contacted dealor about this4 to8 times. Dealer could not find prob. Dealer changed trans fluid/filter 2 times this did not work.I have only hade my dakota sence 02/17/03.I talked to dodge cust serv they said they had no complants on this truck.Unles dodge has a recal i will look at other brands of truck.Incident is on going.*ak

When i drive 50 + miles, transmission won't up shift unless i take foot off gas, it has done this about 12 times since purchase in feb . Also truck has rolled ahead when in park 6 times since purchase in feb.

About 1 year ago, paint started to blow off my 1995 dodge dakota. This truck has had no body work done and has suffered no damage. The paint is peeling in many places all over the cab and in a couple of areas has begun to rust. Paint should last more than 9 years and i am surprised that dodge would allow such a problem for their customers. My vehicle is a 1995 club cab short bed 4x4 and is two tone blue and grey in color. *jb

This is just a run down on repairs i made to my vehicle, but they are problems that should have been taken care of at the factory. First of all, the brake problem still exists. This is the only vehicle that i know of that has to have air in the front caliphers to work. I had to put bearings in both front and rear differential assemblies. The front one came from the factory without a bearing in the left side of the differential assembly.

Two weeks ago consumer heard a crunching noise when applying brakes. Control bracket that holds frame was broken. If whole braket was broken then front wheels could fall off. *ak consumer states that the frame broke in half just before the steering control arm. *slc

Driver's seatbelt latch plastic case cracked, causing seatbelt to remain latched. Contacted 2 chrylser dealerships. One was unable to assist. The other did a computer search for all dodge warehouses. Found no parts in stock in proper color. There was an estimated 8 month wait for part. Part was replaced by used part, found at a junkyard. Second part failed as well, held together by tape at this time.

Vehilce was involved in a 20 mph frontal collision in which bumper was damaged, and air bags did not deploy, cause unknown. *ak *jb

Lever to release front seat on side had squeezed child's fingers as child was entering rear seat of extended cab. This caused fingers to be sliced open.*ak

The bolt supporting the driver's side seatback has sheared numerous times, causing the seat back to collapse. So far the vehicle has been stopped when failure occurred, but this could be deadly if failure occurs while the vehicle is in motion. Once, the bracket supporting the seat back developed a crack. The part was replaced.*ak

Lap and shoulder belts will not unlock. When pressing red push button there is no response. Consumer had to use scissors to cut straps so passenger could get out. Please provide any further information.*ak

Consumer states transmission overheated engine whch caused seals to harden, transmisson was rebuilt. *jb

Consumer was underneath vehicle putting in a clutch pressure plate and found front frame broken. Breakage was right beneath spindle and front wheels. If support failed it could result in a vehicle crash. Dealer said it was not their problem. Consumer will contact manufacturer for more assistance. *ak

8/10/2000 12:00 noon 4 miles south of norman,ok,at 75mph the left rear tire peeled the tread casing, sent it flying at traffic behind the vehicle, tje tire did not deflate and i was able to bring the vehicle to a stop without losing control. The casing damaged the fuel line and the bracket attaching the fuel line to the fuel door and the left rear fender well and exterior panel. Who manufactures the private label tire titled as patriot design number 9332, please advise. *ak

Defective gas gauge does not read properly, but spins around which wont give the correct reading of gas gauge. *ak

Venicle is still under warranty but the warrantor (ge ) has denied the claim and refuses to honor it. We paid a lot of money for an expensive extended warranty for bumper to bumper coverage and they don't stand behind their product.No safety defect listed in the summary. *ak

This transmission failure should not have occurred on such a young truck. In addition, the transmission repairman stated that he has repaired at least 2 others with the same problem with only 40,0000 miles. They were just far enough to be out of warranty when the torque converters blew up throwing shrapnel through the transmission warranting a complete rebuild. My truck has been serviced routinely since i have had it, getting the transmisssion service done every 15000 miles to prevent it from tearing up. Fat chance. *ak

All front seat belts are broken ,plastic bodies brake apart,leaving no seat belts. *ak

The abs circuit board and rear abs sensor and harness malfunctioned, causing the abs system to be inoperative, and resulted in extended stopping distance which could result in a crash. *ak

At a stop light another vehicle rear ended consumer's vehicle, causing it to hit the vehicle in front. Upon impact, drivers airbag did not deploy, failing to protect the occupant in this crash. Also, driver seatback collapsed during crash. Please provide further information. *ak

Got a new battery for the vehicle and started the vehicle. Noticed the abs light come on. Took it to dealer, and they indicated that the abs module and pressure limit valve needed to be replaced. This has happened two times. The other time the abs light came on, took it to the dealer and was told that the wiring harness was pinched between the speed sensor and frame. *ak

Frame was cracked behind the right tire. A plate and weld was done to repair it. *ak

Tires would slide slightly sometimes when i attempted to make a stop even at low speeds especially after a little rain. I asked the dealer (firestone) about this and they looked at the tires but told me that it probably was oil on the road. This happened several times at the same spot until i would only go 15 to 20 mph in that area on my way to work just in case the light changed and i would have to stop. I became uneasy whenever i had to stop. I complained to my husband also and even he said it was probably oil on the street. You know how no one listens to a woman, but i thought it was those tires all the time. The final time was on a rainy day, july 7, 1999, on my way to work on us hwy 78 east. I was traveling about 40 to 45 mph along with other traffic when i realized i had no control over the movement of my truck. It seemed to take on a life of its own. I tried to stop by slowly touching my brakes but nothing stopped the truck. Turning the steering wheel had no effect. The truck was heading across the median into on-coming traffic and i could not control anything. The driver of the truck that i hit told my husband that when he saw my truck coming at him it (my truck) was airborne. He was towing a 40 foot trailer loaded with equipment and my truck was wrecked everywhere but the driver's door. (i have pictures of the truck). The driver's airbag deployed and i had my seat belt on. My elbow or hand cracked the windshield. My right femur was fractured and my left knee suffered complete tears of the mcl and acl ligaments. When the accident was over my legs were on the passenger side of the vehicle and my head in the seat of the driver's side. I was alone in the truck on my way to work. The two lifters fail. The instrument panel has a short circuit causing the gas indicator to malfunction. The engine is experiencing noise. Took vehicle to dealer & was informed the timing chain was causing the engine problem. *yc

When pulling out from a stop sign, and without prior warning ,the crankshaft broke. *ak

Fuel pump had to be replaced four times due to leakage. Vehicle lost power. Vehicle has since been fixed and there have been no reoccurring problems.

Consumer was able to start the vehicle up. When putting into drive, clutch went out, causing consumer not to move vehicle. Vehicle is in shop. *ak

Engine has too much water in it. Also, the tail pipe has alot of smoke coming from it. Dealer not aware of the problem. Provide further information. *ak

Fuel tank which is connected by a rubber tube to the gas tank got loose, causing a fuel leak, which could cause a fire. *ak

Driver tried to apply brakes, they failed then driver applied emergency brake, skidded into another vehicle hitting windshield due to airbag not deploying causing injury.

Battery cable on the positive post mid-way lays against the engine, burned through 3-4 centimeters, through the casing part. Also started to get to the wires inside. The dealer has not been contacted. *ak *slc

Noticed tires feathering on outside excessively. Tires would vibrate in front end. Took to mechanic & informed tires & alignment cannot be done due to lower ball joints being worn out. Also, steering has too much play in it. *ak

Consumer complained that transmission shimmied when driving approximately 50-55 mph. Also shimmies between 18-19 rpms. Dealer/manufacturer notified, and condition cannot be corrected. *ak

Taken vehicle to dealer. Had to have front end seals on wheels replaced. Seals would be leaking when driving vehicle or parked. *ak

Engine oil pressure droped suddenly. Engine began knocking/destroyed crankshaft and bearing. Changed oil every 2500 miles.

The consumer has been experiencing problems with convex mirrors. Mirrors are hard too use because they make objects seem closer than what they appear, and they create too many blind spots because they are too small. The manufacturer has not been contacted. *ak

Passenger's and driver's restraints locked up . The passenger had to be prodded out from the restraint. The dealer has been notified. *ak

Transfer case leaks.

Seat belt became unattached at the transmission tunnel due to the anchoring bolt falling out. It appeared that it had never been tightened adequately.

The wiring harness runs behind the engine below the manifold and touches the manifold. While driving smelled wires burning and vehicle stopped. Mechanic stated that the wiring harness melted on the manifold, and caused the vehicle to short out. No warranty. Dealer cannot duplicate the problem. *ak

Consumer has been experiencing problems with the timing chain. Every 50,00 to 60,000 miles timing chain goes out. In addition, the consumer hears a rattling noise associated with the timing chain. The manufacturer has been contacted. *ak

Vehicle involved in head on collision. Both vehicles traveling at 25 mph. The impact was strong enough to shift the engine but air bag did not deploy.

Transmission failed.

The fuel gauge constantly reads incorrectly and fluctuates everyday. Dealer cannot duplicate the problem. *ak

The suspension was making excessive noise on the right side when going over bumps or curbing. The sway bars were worn out and the bushings were replaced, right and left front. There is a scrunching noise heard in the front end over curbing. The upper control arms were replaced. There is also a popping noise when turning left, right and backing up. The front shocks were replaced and the suspension was lubricated. The front suspension had to be aligned and the right control arm was retorqued. *jg consumer finally was informed the problems were due to a crack in the fram located on the passenger side, inside frame, behind the right front wheel. *slc

While traveling down the road at night, all lighting systems went out with no warning. The headlights, tail lights, and side marker lights went out. *ak consumer states the tachometer stopped working and the gas mileage dropped from 24.5 mpg to 18 mpg after he fabricated repair parts, the cause of failure was due to a wiring harness plug connector not being sufficiently waterproofed, water, road salts, and minerals collected at the wiring side of the connector and caused three electrical spades in the connector to short out, burning one spade out completely, consumer had not heard back regarding the shipment of the wiring harness, however was told it would only take approximately 7 days. *slc

Gas gauge inop

I have had an on-going problem with the computer system that operates the fuel injection on my vehicle. At times, the engine just revs up to several thousand rpms while i'm driving at 35 or 45 mph. At other times. It feels as though the engine is about to die on me. I was told at a dodge dealership that it might be the computer that operates the fuel system. It is increasing in both frequency and intensity. It is getting to be a real problem and i'm told that it may cost as much as $500.00 to fix the problem. I know two other people who also have dodge trucks and they both have the same problem. It sounds like this could be a widespread problem. Please advise me on my options, if you know of any. Air conditioner failed/stopped working due to poor material used on the air conditioner, causing a leak, allowing all the coolant to evaporate. *ak

I am submitting this report as a result of the reported ongoing investigation regarding a dakota/durango wheel problem. On 21 may 97 the left front wheel assembly of my 1995 dodge dakota pickup truck collapsed just after i had parked the vehicle in my driveway. Vin number: [xxx]. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and repaired (invoice states seized and broken steering gear assembly). I purchased the vehicle new in nov 94. I previously had reported a problem regarding a noise from the left front wheel to the dealer in march 95 (bushings replaced); april 95 (replaced upper spring insulators) and again in may 96 (front end lubricated). Air bag: wife driving down highway at approximately 35mph hit pickup vehicle in left rear panel. Vehicle spun around and hit a sewer pipe and crumbled front end suspension. The air bag did not deploy. Vehicle is not in for repairs yet. *ak

While driving at highway speed front right wheel separated from vehicle, resulting in minor injuries and extensive damage to vehicle. Dealer was notified. *ak *ml

I owned a 1995 dodge dakota 4 x 4 that lost the front passenger side wheel on the interstate (at 65 mph) in december 1996. This vehicle had been into the dodge dealership shop the week before because, the front end was making a noise and, pulling to the right. The shop told me there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. One week later i had this accident .I now have a permanent neck and, back injury which require me to be on pain management,have epidurals every 3 months for the chronic cervical and,lumbar pain. I also miss work due to this condition. I believe chrysler dodge knew there was a defect at this time. I contacted an attorney when this happened but, was not able to pursue this due to the fact the vehicle was taken into a dodge dealership by the wrecker, when the accident happened and, we were never able to obtain the parts or, wheel from my vehicle. I feel that a extensive investigation needs to be done to avoid anyone else being permanently hurt or, killed for corporate greed. Ps..... I have the vin # [xxx].. Owner states that his truck was struck in the rear which caused vehicle to have a direct frontal impact, totaling the vehicle and with no deployment of driver's side airbag. *ak

Windshield wiper motor replaced twice.

Shifted into reverse with engine running, impact 6:00 position, hiiting a concrete pole. *ak

Sudden acceleration.

Power control module replaced twice.

Piston in caliper is made of a phonalic material and freezes up after getting hot, causing the disc brakes to stick and destroy the brake pads and rotors.
