• Recall 84375 [USA]: If there is a separation of the ball stud from the housing, the driver can loose steering control, possibly resulting in a vehicle crash.
  Federal-mogul is recalling certain replacement control arm assemblies, part numbers k7425, 10945, fa4510x, k7427, 10946, and fa4611x, sold for use on various passenger vehicles listed above. The ball joint on the control arm assembly can fail causing the ball stud to wear through the control arm housing resulting in noise and/or separation of the ball stud from the housing.

• Recall 68277 [USA]: Separation of the ball stud from the socket of the ball joint housing would allow the control arm to collapse and the wheel to fold in causing loss of steering control, possibly resulting in a crash.
  Qualis automotive is recalling certain aftermarket ball joints sold for use on certain passenger vehicles. The socket may have been excessively hardened which could cause it to crack near the retaining ring groove allowing the ball stud to separate under impact load. The subject ball joints were sold as four part numbers, d10945, d10946, g10945, and g10946. The affected control arms, d10945 and d10946, are stamped with the following dates on the ball joints: 134308, 135708, 100109, 102709, 104109, 105509, 107609, 108909, 110309, 113209, and 116609. The g10945 and g10946 are the same part as the d10945 and d10946 respectively. They are labeled differently depending on the aftermarket customer.

• Recall 37165 [USA]: Fuel restriction could result in loss of power and/or engine stall, possibly resulting in a vehicle crash.
  Certain tigas fuel pump modules manufactured between june 1 and september 24, 2006, sold under various brand names and p/nos. These fuel pump modules are sold as aftermarket for use in certain daimlerchrysler vehicles listed above. Silicone material used in manufacture of the flapper valve was out-of-specification, leading to excess swell of the flapper valve restricting the flow of fuel to the fuel pump module.

• Recall 41973 [USA]: Either circumstance may result in the vehicle rolling away without warning.
  On certain passenger vehicles, the floor shifter ignition-park interlock may fail and allow the shifter to be moved out of the park position with the key removed. An inoperative interlock may also allow the key to be removed when the shifter has not been placed in the park position.
  dealers will install a new load-limiting push rod into the floor shifter lever of the affected vehicles. Owner notification began on june 14, 2004. Owners should contact daimlerchrysler at 1-800-853-1403.

• Recall 14240 [USA]: If this happens, the "ignition-park" interlock system will be nonfunctional.
  Vehicle description: passenger vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions. The adjustment of the cable connecting the console shifter mechanism to the ignition key can cause a trapped key condition which can result in a low force required to depress the shift button. A combination of applying a mis-adjusted release button with a low force attempt to shift out of park with the key in the locked position, can break the connecting pin in the shifter.
  dealers will inspect for proper operation of the system. Any vehicles that are not functional after the inspection will have the shift mechanism and cable replaced with a "self-adjusting" design.

  Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. The secondary hood latch spring can disengage from its retention hole if the hood is slammed shut.

• Recall 2004003 [Canada]: Other
  On certain vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission and a floor-mounted shifter, the ignition-park interlock may become defeated and allow the shifter to be moved out of the park position with the key removed. An inoperative interlock may also allow the key to be removed when the shifter has not been placed in the park position. This may result in the vehicle rolling away without warning. Correction: dealer will inspect the function of the ignition-park interlock system. Vehicles found with functional interlock systems will have a load-limiting push rod installed into the floor shifter lever. Vehicles with a non-functional ignition-park interlock system will have the shifter assembly replaced.

  Note: vehicles equipped with a floor mounted automatic transmission shift lever. A combination of applying a mis-adjusted shifter release button with a low force attempt to shift out of park with the key in the locked position may break the connecting pin in the shifter. If this happens, the "ignition-park" interlock system will not function. Correction: the console shift interlock mechanism will be inspected for proper function. Any vehicles that are not functional after the inspection will have the shift mechanism and cable replaced with a current production "self adjusting" design.

  The primary/secondary hood latch spring may not remain in position during hood closing, which can result in loss of both the primary and secondary latch function. Loss of hood function can result in a hood fly-up condition. Correction: the secondary hood latch spring will be replaced with one having a longer end hook.

• Recall 1997205 [Canada]: Suspension
  On certain vehicles, the lower control arm ball joint may separate due to loss of lubrication. This separation could result in loss of vehicle control and a crash without prior warning. Correction: ball joint end housing cover seal will be inspected for leakage and the rubber boot will be inspected for damage. If the cover seal leaks or the boot is damaged, the lower control arm will be replaced.

  The manufacturer reports above are based on daimlerchrysler¿s (dc) analysis of model year (my) 1998 (population = 356,384) and 1999 (population = 486,948) ja, jx and lh family subject vehicle data (earlier mys excluded).The population number includes all mys.The precise number of duplicates between odi and dc reports cannot be determined due to missing or incomplete information.The fatality incident involved an elderly person who attempted to stop a roll away vehicle and received fatal injuries.Odi also gathered information on my 1997-99 prowler vehicles in this investigation. The prowler vehicles were manufactured with a different design shifter mechanism (the shift lever is shorter).There are no complaints of prowler interlock failure in odi¿s database, and dc has received no reports either.The prowler is excluded from the recall scope.The investigation involved a condition where the interlock system could fail (or be made inoperative by the operator) during vehicle use, possibly inadvertently.The interlock system is required under fmvss 114.With the transmission in the park position and the ignition key off, the combined action of pressing the shift button and pulling the shift lever rearward may result in the operator overcoming the interlock system and cause the mechanical linkage of the system to disconnect.When this occurs, there is no overt indication to an operator that the system is defeated, and an increased risk of vehicle roll-away exists.Under recall 04v021, dc will replace damaged shift mechanisms, and will install on all vehicles a device which inhibits the operator¿s ability to overcome the interlock and defeat the system.Beginning with my 2000, dc incorporated a brake and transmission shifter interlock (btsi) system into the subject vehicles.Introduction of btsi involved design changes to the shift mechanism, one of which resulted in reduced mechanical advantage (rma) of the shift button.The rma shifter requires increased forces to overcome the interlock system, making the shifter less susceptible to damage.

  There are no injuries or fatalities associated with this alleged defect.While conducting this investigation, odi found that the subject cinches meet the load bearing requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard 208, and that many of the reported failures were due to incorrect child safety seat installations. Additionally, the report rate is low (1.60/100k).The information available fails to establish the existence of a defect trend at this time.Further allocation of agency resources to this issue is unwarranted and the preliminary evaluation is being closed.

• Lower control arm ball joint failure investigation as of 19970929

  By letter dated november 6, 1997, the manufacturer advised this agency of its decision to initiate a safety recall campaign of the subject vehicles to correct the defect identified in this ea.The recall will also cover 1996 and 1997 chrysler cirrus/dodge stratus vehicles, as well as 1995 through 1997 chrysler sebring convertible and plymouth breeze vehicles equipped with identical lower control arm ball joints.An estimated total of 599,00vehicles are affected by this recall.The manufacturers investigation disclosed that process variability, together with the ball joint housing cover crimping operation, can result in an ineffective seal that permits a loss of lubrication and accelerted wear of the ball joint assembly.This condition can lead to failure and separtion of the lower control arm ball joint.The recall is identified as nhtsa 97v-201 and a copy of chryslers letter to nhtsa is attached hereto.

Takata recall, horn don`t work, millage don`t work ,gas light comes on and neddle moves up and down alot

Either the oil light or cruise light will come on and car loses all power. I have to pull off road and put car in park turn it off and sometimes it will just start right back and sometimes i have to wait for about 30 mins for it to start back. I have only had the car since march of 2013 and it has done this 10-12 times since then. I almost got rear ended a few times cause with no power it is hard to get car off the road. I have contacted dodge but there is no recall for this problem yet. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1997 dodge stratus. While driving approximately 45-50 mph on normal road conditions, the cruise control was activated. When the contact depressed the brake pedal, the cruise control failed to deactivate. He made several attempts to disengage the cruise control mechanism, but was unsuccessful. The gear shifter was placed into neutral and the vehicle suddenly began to slow down; however, the engine revved highly. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure occurred whenever the cruise control was activated and the vehicle was in motion. The failure mileage was 150,000 and current mileage was 175,000.

The dealer stated that the seat belt mechanism bolts needed to be replaced at the contact's expense because there was no recall. My dodge stratus had am engine fire on 12-10-2006 as i walked away from the car after driving about 20-25 miles to my destination . A man ran up and asked me if that was my car that was on fire as i took a look i immediatealy called the fire dept and the fire was put out with out any one bring hurt. *nm

Auto transmission. 1997 dodge stratus 2.5l with auto stick. Transmission leakage and failure of transmission. Vehicle will not shift above second gear, and gear slips. *nm

Tl*the contact owns a 1997 dodge stratus. While driving 70 mph the cruise control failed to engage when activated. The mechanic was unable to diagnose the failure. The current mileage was 128,000 and the failure mileage was 105,000. The vin appeared to be invalid.

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle caught fire due to an electrical wire according to the fire marshal. The vehicle was parked and not being driven. The fire was in the engine compartment. There was nothing unusual about the way the vehicle was operating before the fire.

I was going to my cousins graduation and had asked an officer about parking when he directed me where to go when i turned i heard a pop and smoke started coming from under the hood and it caught fire. The fire department was called out and the fire was put out. My car was towed to a towing yard, and the next day towed to my property. Everything in engine compartment burned. I had it looked at by a mechanic and he said that it was probably an electrical fire. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated while driving at no particular speed, the check engine light illuminates and the vehicle completely stalls. After stalling, the vehicle restarts following an extended period of time. Although the vehicle has been seen by a dealer and multiple repairs have been made, the dealer was unable to remedy the stalling problem. The rear freeze plug was leaking. Updated 03/09/06. *jb

Dt: contact's wife went into walmart and 15 minutes later 1997, dodge, stratus caught on fire in the parking lot. The originated from under the hood, possibly around the battery box or the master cylinder. The car was completely destroyed. This happened on june 5, 2005. The only problem the contact had with the car prior to tthe fire was the check engine light caming on sometimes. The car has cruise control, and electric windows.*ak

Dt: dodge stratus 1997. Consumer received recall notice concerning transaxles floor shifter park interlock. Consumer said that it broke, causing the axle to malfunction. When turn the car on consumer could shift the shifter into gear without pushing the button on shifter or pressing the brakes. Before had to press the brake and push button to go into gear. Currently, vehicle will not go into gear unless consumer shut the vehicle off and turning it back on. Sometimes when shutting the vehicle off it would not shut off until consumer messed with the shifter. Consumer called in for recall repairs, and consumer went back to pick up vehicle and the dashboard and steering column were taken apart and not put back together. Consumer said it was laying on the front passenger's side. There was no fan belt on engine. Consumer said that dealer charged her $87.00. *ak

Stereo and mirror quit working half way through a trip to st. Paul. Changed fuse, smoke came pouring out of the top right of the door panel. Fuse blew. Took door apart. Switch to electrical side view mirror had shorted. Melted down into harness. Big fire hazard because door insulation is right there. Don't know what to do

Vehicle fire

Dt: the consumer owns a 1997 dodge stratus. She says that her vehicle caught on fire. The fire department told her that the fire started by a short in the driver's side panel. She contacted dodge and they said they wouldn't do anything about it because it was not their problem and it was not on recall. *tt *eh

Have contacted dodge/daimler-chrysler several times about transmission on my 1997 dodge stratus going out. Hesitation on shifting into gear, slipping out of gear and back in on turns, trans leaks, slipping into gear suddenly and jerking the car, and so on. Car has only 66,000 miles on it now and i got it in 2001 when my father passed away. It had only 53,000 miles on it then. A trans shouldn't be going out at 50-60,000 miles. If dodge has a bad product they should correct it themselves. I shouldn't have to pay to repair a problem dodge already knows about and isn't doing anything about. I never haul or pull anything and i only put 13,000 miles on it in five years. Not heavy driving. I should not have any problems at all and dodge refused to do anything or pay for repair- just saying "it's past warranty". I cannot afford to repair but i should have a vehicle company that is proud of it's product enough to stand behind it. I only get $867 a month retirement and i'm 60 years of age. Daimler-chrysler should have made repairs when i first contacted them a year ago. This is a daily problem and getting worse. Hundreds of failures. I have to use the car for pet care so just continue to putt along until it (the trans) goes out completely. *nm

Automatic transmission would intermittently shift out of drive into neutral while driving 40 mph or more. Consumer was concerned that the vehicle may be involved in a rear end collision because of this condition. Dealer was not notified.*ak

Power steering supply hose ruptured. Fluid dripped on to exhaust and caused a fire. *ak

While having the heater core repaired dealership indicated that head gasket was leaking oil into the cooling system and onto the ground. This was a common failure with this vehicle, and there were numerous complaints listed on this issue. *ak

Drove home from work. Parked car in private lot. Approxamately ten minutes later. Neighborhood kids notified me that the car was smoking. Upon responding. I noticed that the car had flames coming from underneath engine and hood area. Called fire department. The fire department stated that it was an electrical fire. Car was totaled. The power steering hose ( part # 4764-347a / 0777c/ 25517 df 3251 3/8" id # 03067f1) ruptured and leaked onto the exhaust pipe manifold and ignited the power steering fluid stating the fire. I personally noted the smell of power steering fluid coming from vehicle.*ak

While the vehicle was parked it caught on fire. The consumer called the fire department to extinguish the fire. No injuries reported. *ak prior to the fire, the consumer stated a mechanic worked on the vehicle and stated the vehicle had an electrical leaked. *jb

Consumer's vehicle experienced the same problem as mentioned in recall 97v201000 concerning left control arm. Consumer heard a clicking noise coming from the front end of the vehicle. Took vehicle to the dealer. However, the dealer did not want to do the repairs at their expense.*ak

While driving vehicle stalled. Consumer was unable to restart vehicle, and had it towed to the dealer fore inspection. Mechanic determined that the head gasket needed to be replaced. Consumer informed the mechanic this problem occurred more than once and had not been resolved. *ak

The vehicle was used to travel from home to a cinema; was parked, turned off the engine. After cinema session ended the driver and passangers were surprised to see the fire dept turning off a fire that ignited unexpectedly. The vehicle was a total loss; the fire ignited under the motor, to the driver's side.

The vehicle caught on fire . The fire was emitting from the engine compartment and wheel well areas. *nm *sc

While turning the vehicle off the key could not be remove from the ignition switch. This caused the vehicle to continue running. *jb

Consumer's son was driving on the road and hit a deer on the front driver's side toward the center of the hood. Upon impact, air bags failed to deploy. There was $2500.00 in damages.*ak

White smoke and water coming out of tailpipe. More than likely blown head gasket.Seems to be a known problems for these cars.Dodge says its not on recall but i think it should be!!!!!!*ak

Head gasket failed at 31,000 miles on 1997 dodge stratus. *ak

A very small "drip...Drip...Drip" of oil started around 47k miles. Drip became a gush by 50k miles. Oil was flowing out of the head gasket as fast as i could put it in. (yeah, big surprise, huh?!) thanks, chrysler, for standing behind your product and making good on your screw-ups. Typical american big biz attitude! You can bet my next vehicle will be a toyota! Oh gee! I almost forgot - yes, i'll be sure to tell everyone i know to "steer clear of anything chrysler". No pun intended i assure you... Especially since your crappy engineers just cost me $1000. *ak

Head gasket leaking oil into engine. All normal maintenance has been conducted regularly. At only 80k miles, this problem should not be occurring!! This is a very costly repair. Chrysler has offered only minimal assistance. This needs to be an official recall! Please contact me with a response.*ak

While driving oil leaked from the head gasket without warning. The consumer had to refill the vehicle with oil often. *nm

1997 dodge stratus 2.4l has a blown head gasket. The car has 119000 miles and my repair technician says that this problem should really not occur at this point. The car has leaked oil since about 60,000 miles.

While driving at 40 mph the vehicle was involved in a collision. Upon impact, the dual airbags did not deploy. No injuries were reported. *ak *sc

Head gasket failed at approx. 72,000 miles. It seems like this is a common problem in dodge stratus and dodge neon based on all the complaints i have read on the internet. I would like dodge/chrysler to take some responsibility for the problem, as i was told they are aware a problem exists and have since change the style of gasket used.*ak

The vehicle was in an accident. The vehicle was traveling about 60 mph when it was struck broadside. The vehicle ran into some trees and the air bags did not deploy. *jb this incident occurred because the consumer tried to avoid a head on collision. A fire started in the passenger side area. *sc *jb

Head gasket blew and had to be replaced about around 70,000 miles. Now the car is overheating again and there appears to be oil in the coolant, leading me to believe that similar problems have resurfaced again. Given the tremendous number of similar complaints logged by consumers on this website and others, the company should take immediate action. *la

Consumer noticed that vehicle was using an exorbitant amount of oil, and was losing pressure in the motor. A independent mechanic found that the head gasket blew out. Consumer replaced the motor once ,and the head gaskets once. *ak

Engine exploded while parked in shopping center parking lot. *ak

Consumer states that the front right tie rod snapped. *ak the vehicle was driven all that day. It was parked in the garage until later on. Consumer's husband attempted to back up but didn't have no control of the front end. Vehicle was towed for repairs the following morning. *ph

When the car was put into reverse the engine raced, with my foot still on the brake the car was propelled backwards at a high rate of speed. The rpm gadge registered 8,000. I quickly put the car into park,it heisitated then the car was propelled us forward at a high rate of speed for about thirty feet on our driveway, unable to stop, having the brakes lock, the car crashed into my other parked car and the porch of my house. Finally after the stratus pushed the other car ten feet towards the road ,my husband was able to pull the keys out of the car. My daughter received a slight concussion. A police report was filed. By the grace of god this didn't happen at my daughter school fair to which we were on our way. Chryler was notified concerning their product defect. A gentlemen representing them has investigated, we are awaiting his findings. Please mke sure to check the throttle sensor, your life depends on it!*ak

After the recall regarding the lower ball joint was repaired, it then failed. Recall # 97 v 201 000. *jb

We had frequent electrical problem with the car and took it to the liberty dealership in johnstown, oh to get them fixed until we got to the point that it was going to take more than the care was valued to guarantee the fix. These items were not covered under our warranty. One day after pulling into our driveway after work, i shut the car off, opened the drivers side door while pulling the emergency brake and the air bags deployed, giving me a pretty good shot in the face. The car was sitting still and not running. The keys weren't even in the ignition. I called chrysler's customer service line and filed an incident. They assigned a.L. Gilbert to work on the case. A investigator was deployed from a private company out of dayton, oh. He took the car to a dealership in mt. Vernon, oh and determined by looking at the car's computer that it had been wrecked. Obviously, this wasn't the case as there wasn't a dent or scratch on the car and i was sitting still in the driveway. However, chrysler refused to change their determination. Even though it was requested multiple times, a copy of the report from the investigator from dayton, oh was never provided me. A.L. Gilbert blatantly called me dishonest because he said the computer didn't lie. I convinced him to let me take it to the liberty dealership and have the service manager look at the car while on the phone with him. The liberty service manager told a.L. Gilbert that there was no visible evidence of any accident on the car. A.L. Gilbert said there absolutely had to be something because the computer said so. The libert service mechanic said, in fact the only scratch i see is on the undercarriage and looks like he's driven on a gravel road. Gilbert responded and said that was all the evidence he needed and that the decision stood. I still drive the car today but without air bags and with a dash that lights up like a christmas tree because of the electrical problems. *nm

I had nothing but major problem with my dodge stratus it's only a 1997 with 86,582. I bought it used with 23,000 in january of 1999 from a car dealer. I have spent $2,335.30 in repairs in 2002&2003 in may & june of 2003 i spent $1,678.31 & $656.99 in july 2002 starting with brakes being contamied ,water pump ,radiator replaced,and it's being driven locally never been out of this state. I feel this is a lemon car because of the major repairs and the mileage is only 74,153 when i started having repairs and keep having major repairs totally $2,400 only had it 3 1/2 yrs. The power steering hose (part number # 4764-347a / 0777c/ 25517 df 3251 3/8" id # 03067f1) is located behind the cylinder block and runs along the top of it from the pump( located on the left side of the vehicle's motor) to the right side of the engine down to the rack & pinion. Because of the location of the hose when it rupturs/leaks onto the exhust pipe/manifold and ignites the power steering fluid starting a fire. This should be corrected so that it is placed lower or away from the exhust pipe/maifold. *ak

I have a 1997 dodge stratus that i took in for overheating they replaced the thermostat, flushed the radiator, and replaced a belt. Then three days later my car was still overheating so i brought it in again and this time the head gasket was blown due to oil leaking and the exhaust manifold was cracked. This was not cheap to fix all of this and prior to this happening i had to pay $650 to get brakes in front and back, roters, and replace the hydraulics in the rear brakes. Going down the highway at 65 mph, i put on my cruise control, the car in front of me slowed down so i pushed on my brake, which was supposed to eliminate cruise sontrol immediately. My cruise light went off but the car continued to accelerate. Applied brake harder, realized there was no stopping, pulled over to break down lane. Applied emergency brake, ended up with just sqealing tires and transmission shifting horribly. Let me just note that at this time i also had my 10 year old daughter in the car. He ended up having to pull in front of me and slow down to about nothing to finally stop my car at which point he got out , came to my window and told me to turn off the engine. With no prior warning, i was driving my car on a busy street and when i tried to accelerate, the car acted like it had been put in neutral. I limped it over to a transmission place and they put a machine on it. The third gear is out so we had to have it rebuilt. The cost to do this is $1650.00. It doesn't seem that a vehicle should have to have a new transmission with only 9,000 miles out of warranty. We previously had trouble with this car because we were stranded at night with 3 children in the car on the freeway due to the timing belt being shredded at 23,000 miles. We had to be towed to a dealership and rent a vehicle to get home (70 miles away). After that, we had trouble with the manifold. We had a cracked manifold and i had to repeatedly go back and argue that there was something wrong. I finally got it replaced after 3 visits and a week long stay, it was fixed. Premature head gasket failure and ongoing body idle vibration

Consumer noticed an oil leak. Took vehicle to dealer, and they said it was the engine head gasket. If head gasket were to fail completely, oil could get onto catalytic converter and start a fire. *ak *ml

Vehicle experienced head gasket failure for the second time within 17,000 miles of first replacement. Dealer notified, and informed consumer vehicle was out of warranty and not under a manufacturer's recall. *ak *ml

Tachometer stops working and returns to 0 rpm at same time odometer light goes out. Stays that way for periods of one minute to 30 minutes. Then both start working again, with no loss of miles being recorded. Checked fuses and ground wires, seem to be ok. Dealer wants $400+ to check problem. Not safety problem, just inconvenient.

Engine head gasket was leaking oil at 51,000 miles. Spoke to mechanic this is a defect in the gasket. I have the gasket if the nhtsa wishes to inspect. Spoke to dodge they said it was a common problem with the stratus but it was not cover under the warranty.*ak

Consumer purchased car used and engine head gasket was replaced at 44,000 miles. Now at 61,000 miles it has blown out again. Dealer isn't going to replace it, but manufacturer wants the consumer to get the car to dealer, and they have a representative to look at it. *ak *ml

Engine head gasket was leaking oil at 43000 miles. This has to be a defect. *ak

On acceleration vehicle does not gear in. Transmission did not engage, and left vehicle stranded to be hit in traffic. Also slips after acceleration or does a hard kick into gear. *ak

Had two mechanics look at the engine, and both said that this is a common problem with this car. Then we took it to the dealer and they said our warranty is up and there's nothing they can do. They did offer us trade in. How ironic? Upon looking at your complaints database i can see that i'm not the only one with a head gasket failure. I found out yesterday my head gasket needs replacing after doing alot of research i have found this seems to be a problem with alot of stratus vehicles, and neon's and hope dodge will be forced to back there problems. *ak

During driving on snow the abs system caused a feedback to the system that resulted in locking up,and a pedal that rebounded out when braking on snow. *ak

Exhaust manifold - upon dealer replacing defective cylinder head gasket, was notified by dealer that the exhaust manifold has a crack and should be replaced. Prior to taking to dealer another garage had determined the cause for overheating to be from a defective head gasket. They did not mention anything about crack in exhaust manifold during their inspection of the vehicle. Owner feels damage was caused by the dealer upon removal of the cylinder head or due to excessive heat caused by overheating from the defective head gasket. Dealer refused to acknowledge responsiblity and refused to contact dodge factory representative. They said it was safe to re-install the cracked exhaust manifold and drive the vehicle. We are concerned about exhaust fumes coming into the vehicle and feel it is unsafe. Steering rack - the power steering failed and caused vehicle to be virtually undriveable. When we contacted the manufacturer, we were told it was out of the warranty period. We therefore paid to have it replaced at a cost of almost $800. We feel that the rack and pinion steering rack assembly should not have failed with only 52,000 miles on the vehicle.*ak

Transmission range sensor--car "kicks and bolts" as though the driver slammed on brakes at 30 miles per hour. Also, car needs a new head gasket at 50,000 miles. Car has been services regularly and well maintained. What is wrong with this picture?!

My head gasket blew out with 84,000 miles. Car is only 3 years old. I owned it for 2 years. I took it to a mechanic and 2 dodge dealerships. The first dodge dealership had my car for over 6 weeks they could not fix it after the headgasket was replaced. Basically the head gasket was replaced along with timing belt. After that the car would not start. The dealership could not fix it. Plus i had to pay for a computer,which did not fix the problem. The money was non refundable. The car was taken to a second dodge dealership in which they had it for about 5 weeks. They fixed the problem saying it was electrical. I had to pay over 450 dollars for that. The total i paid was over 1200 dollars. I think its pretty bad that the dealership coulnd not even fix it! It seems to run all right now. Ive read how a lot of theses dodge models i.E. 2.4 liter engines have a major corrosion problem that the dodge company fails to tell anybody about or even try to fix it. I had to pay out of my own pocket. *ak

I took my car to be inspected and they informed me that there was a serious oil leak due to a gasket failure. They advised me to take it to the dealer in the hope that there would be a "silent recall" for this design failure. I was also told that the cost for this repair would be about $1,000! While looking through the database of reported failures i noticed that there are several other reports about the same issue. Please help! *ak

The headgasket blew out and the repairman said to check if there was a recall because he has seen and heard about alot of the stratus' blowing the headgasket as i am looking on your website i see that he is correct there are alot of cases of blowing the headgasket. Was there a recall is the dealer going to fix this problem?*ak

Consumer noticed that oil was on ground that came underneath vehicle. Head gasket blew at 22000 miles before. Dealership was aware of problem.*ak

Oil is leaking around the seal, and head gaskets. I called around to get estimates on getting the car fixed, and was told that hundreds of dodge stratus has had that same problem. And it would cost between $900.00, to $1000.00 to be fixed.

Gear shift moves when car is in park. This item was recalled, and car was suppose to be fixed. But has been in shop 3 times, and still wasn't fixed. Recall 98v183000. *ak

The heater will only blow out on high speed and the ventilation system is not working properly as it shows on the dial. *ak

Dt: the vehicle is a 1997 dodge stratus. At 27,000 the oil light came on while the consumer was driving and the vehicle cut off. When the consumer had it towed to the dealership they replaced the timing belt and pulleys. At 39,000 the engine would not start. When it was towed to the dealership again, they found that one coil was shorted, the pcm was bad, the timing belt had to be replaced again, they had to replace the module, the relay, and the plug wire. The whole electrical system had to be replaced. Later at 62,000 miles it was leaking oil and would not start. It was towed to the dealer were the timing belt had to be replaced a third time, the head gasket and package, the plug and plug wires, and the spark plugs were also replaced. Currently at 89,000 the timing belt and head gasket need replacing. The vehicle is over heating and will not start. This caused the heater core to go out. The cluster has gone out; the whole lighting system comes on and goes off without warning. These current problems have not been repaired as of now. There are other issues that are included in a recall for the lower ball joints and for the floor shifter. The vehicle was immobile so the consumer can not take it to the dealership to have the recalls repaired. The manufacturer told the consumer there was nothing they could do because the vehicle was out of warranty. *jb

While making a right hand turn the brake pedal went almost all the way to the floor. The pedal felt soft and spongy. This has happened at least two other occasions in the last six months. After this happens i try to duplicate the defect but it won,t happen again.

The transmission has failed 3 times in my dodge stratus, wont shift out of 2nd gear,it was towed to the dealer 3 times they said they fixed it the first 2 times but it was not fixed properly. It is currently at the dealer again for the same problem. I have talked to 3 other people that have had the same problem with the transmissions in their chrysler vehicles however, chrysler corp main office denies any problem with transmission...Not that i thought they would say so. But someone at the service department of my dealer admits that chrsyler knows of the problem but will not go public.

Automatic transmission failed. From research on the internert, this seems to be a common problem with chrysler transmissions. We received no help from chrysler or the dealer.

Head gasket leaking oil at rate of 1 quart per 3,000 miles. Daimlerchrysler contacted but kept details regarding scope of failures a secret. They offered to split repair costs 50-50 with me (my portion to exceed $300). Contacted a number of dealers and independent repair facilities, all of which confirmed large numbers of head gasket failures across several model and engine lines. After seeing the number of complaints on this same subject on this site, i have to believe it is a major defect in either gasket design or material and warrants a recall to repair at no cost to the original owner. Vehicle costs too much ($20,000) to allow this type of a failure to continue. I currently own 2 chrysler built vehicles, but will not buy another daimlerchrysler product, ever. *ak

It would stick when i would put my car into drive or reverse and the engine started sounding louder than it should when i accelerated. Then on friday october 1, 1999 as i was increasing speed from 35 to 45mph the rpm gage started spinning. Though i had my foot on the gas the speed did not increase and it felt like my wheels locked up. I have been told that i am missing third gear.

This is the 3rd time this has happened. When turning and brakes are applied there is a bad grinding in the front end the brakes go soft and stop working the car continues rolling as if i didn't have my foot on the brakes at all. It goes in for service on tuesday. I have had it at 2 other dealers for other brake problems.

This is the second manufacture defect within the last 2 months, i have been stranded twice

Engine pulley that holds the timing belt broke which may have caused a loss of vehicle control if driving. *ak

While car was parked in a parking lot, apprx 30 min's when someone noticed the car was on fire. The fire dept was called and a tech from the place i was at went out with a fire ext. And put out the fire. Fire dept arrived and determined that the fire was started in a door panel swith (pwr door lock or pwr mirror switch) car was towed to scully motor and i calle d chrysler, they did a though investigation and found the fault to be in the pwr mirror switch. They have been great and have assummed responsibility for totaling my car and doing a complete buy back which is in the process. My concern is for the safty of others who may not have the good fotune i had of not being in the car since it burnt up at a fast pace. Hope this helps others, thanks karen.

About 3 weeks before the problem was realized, i heard a very loud whirring sound. I had taken it to feeney dodge in palatine to have the front brakes done. They did the brakes but i don't understand why they did not notice the left wheel bearing noise. I took it to goodyear in mt. Prospect for regular maintenance and they noticed it right away. They said that the left wheel bearing needed to be replaced. I had an amoco station i know well do the repair. Why did a car that is only 2 1/2 years old need a wheel bearing replaced? I have never had a car have this problem. Why wasn't this under the three year warranty? I contacted feeney and another dealer in the area and got told that no, that is not under the 3 year warranty. This repair should have been paid for by chrysler not me. The part had to be defective for this to have happened. *ak

Chrysler says it's normal for brakes to be replaced every 15,000 miles.

Antilock brakes failed twice. The second time on 08-11-99 i rear-ended another vehicle. Chrysler has been asked to investigate also, but don't know if they will decide against their own product. Would appreciate your help.

Upon being struck in the left front wheel well, near the battery, my car bursted into flames. The vehicle continued to travel another 200 feet desipite various methods of application of the brakes. I then deployed the emergency brake. The vehicle didn't stop until the power cut off and the finally died.

Dodge chrysler did not inform owners of a potential problem with the head gasket. There was no recall notice; instead there was a "silent recall" -- that is, owners are unaware until there is a problem. *ak

Riding down the road when my "engine check light" came on, i took it to the service department and they said it was my gas cap. I changed my gas cap and the same problem has occurred four times. Each time i have taken to a dodge dealership service department. They fixed the problem and a day later the "engine check light" comes back on. The last time i took it in for the same problem the service manager said that they can't do anything about it but it is safe to drive. The "engine check light" is still on till this day and it has gone off yet. *ak

Lost turn signal, radio, and rear window defroster functionality simultaneously. Functionality returned after ignition was turned off and car was restarted. Dealership said that they couldn't do anything because there was no failed part, but that it sounded like a glitch in the body controller. Chrysler referred me back to the dealer saying that nothing would be done unless the part were shown to be defective. My concern is that nobody seems to be willing to share what systems are affected by the body controller and what the potential consequences could be if it fails. *ak

When applying the brakes vehicle slid about 130 feet as if on wet ground. Vehicle rear ended another vehicle. Dealer has seen vehicle. Consumer now waiting for dodge to investigate before repair. *ak.Et.

While driving at 35 mph airbags deployed. Vehicle was not involved in a collision. Driver sustained minor injuries. Manufacturer has been notified. *ak

Engine head gasket blew out. Also, loud knocking in front left side of wheel due to rack pinon failure. Dealer notified, and informed consumer that repairs will be made at consumer's expense. *ak

Manufacturer will not assist with apparent known transmission problems. Manufacturer agreed to pay half for apparent known head gasket problem. When will there be recalls for these two known problems. *ak

Dec/99 i now have another oil leak. The replacement work has also failed. The first repair under the warranty the was $2578.65. It has only been 3000 miles since the first repair. I only have approx. 6 months left on my warranty. I'm worried it will happen again & i'll have to pay myself.

When driving at any speed the brakes were hard, and there was a grinding noise when applying the brakes. *ak

The moving steering shaft between the steering wheel and floor of the passenger compartment is exposed. A clamp on the steering shaft caught the floor mat and made it almost impossible to steer the car. I talked to the dealer and was told all stratus are made this way. The steering shaft needs a shield. If chrysler doesn't fix this, i may sell the car. I have had numerous other problems, including timing belts/iginition key/ head rests/body, electric mirrors,etc.. This may be the last straw. I am a mechanical engineer with 20 years experience and i have worked on cars since grade school. A design flaw like this borders on criminal!!! If there is an accident caused by this design, i would be glad to testify. It would be an open and shut case!!! I would appreciate a reply to this message if possible. *ak

Ie99034, boot does not fit on the joints. If on the floor mat, it will cause joints to stick, and there will be no steering control. Please provide further information. *ak

Braking system malfuctioned,brake pedal went to the floor, causing extended stopping distance which could result in a crash. Also problems with the transmission. *ak consumer states after backing up and then putting vehicle in drive, vehicle wont go forward. *slc

While approaching a major intersection i attempted to slow down, i removed my foot from the gas and pushed on the brake, instead of the car slowing the engine began to race and the car surged forward. At first i thought i may have my foot on the gas so i completly removed my foot, the car continued to speed up at a very fast rate. Just as the car was entering the intersection i slammed back on the brakes, but was only able to slow the car. It continued toward the intersection. Once in the intersection, the only thing that saved myself and my wife from being killed was that the traffic was light enough to go around us. After approx 20 to 30 seconds the engine went back to normal i put the car in reverse to get out of the intersection. I took the car right to the dealer and chylsler has been notified. My wife refuses to get back into the car and i do not believe it is safe for my family, this could happen again and i may not be as lucky next time. I expect chrysler to give me the run around , please help. *ak

Vehicle went out of control while turning off freeway. Hit by another vehicle which caused major damages in front of vehicle. Upon impact, air bags did not deploy. Dealer/manufacturer notified. *ak

The power steering fluid was contaminated which caused loss of power steering and may have resulted in an accident. Please provide further information. *ak

Consumer believes that when the head gasket blew the transmission fluid burned out resulting in the transmission overheating and locking up.

Head gasket - have had to replace two (2) head gaskets due to leaks in three years. First one cost a deductible of $500 and the second one will cost me $250, although i know that dodge has issued tech bulletins to address installation problems. Dodge did the good will bit in both cases by supposedly splitting the cost 50/50. This is an outrage that consumers are required to pay such hefty fees for inferior/faulty designs. Brakes - apparently the design of the calipers includes a cylinder made of some type of plastic. This plastic is not able to withstand the heat of normal braking operations and will not contract properly when cooled down. Because of this the caliper sticks in an extended position which casuses the disc pad to stay in constant contact with the rotor, thus wearing down the pad prematurely and causing possible damage to the rotors. This cost me $559 the first time and since then i have simply been changing the pads earlier than necessary to prevent further damage to the rotor. Although this has not resulted in an accident, i believe it could (or has to others?) cause an accident/fatality on an extended trip. *ak

Whenever consumer is driving on highway at 50-70 mph with cruise control engaged and the vehicle approaching a down hill slope, the vehicle would accelerate to 4000 rpm, but the speed would remain the same. Consumer would commence to disengage cruise control with button, which failed to deactivate. Applied brake pedal which deactivated cruise control. Vehicle been in/out dealer shop on three occasions, and informed that nothing could be found. *ak *ml

Timing belt idler pulley broke damaging the timing belt.

When vehicle was involved in a crash with 3 other vehicles, traveling about 10 mph, the shoulder belt did not restrain the driver, and there was no deployment of the driver's side or passenger's side air bags. Most damage done to the driver's side and the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle is being repaired. *ak

On july 27 1998 i was driving my dodge stratus south on state st in springville i was slowing down for a light i changed lanes to the right when my driver side airbag deployed ripping my hand off the steering wheel i stopped the car . My girlfreind and her kids where in the car. And jumped out of the car when i stopped. My arm was cut up from the cover on the airbag. I went to the hospital. Where they removed plastic from my forarm. I called the police and reported it. I called doug smith and told them what happend they looked at the car and said they whould not cover it because it was out of waranty, but i have exstended waranty they said to have my auto insurance take care of it. My auto insurance wont cover fatory defects. I was lucky i was'nt on the freeway or i would have been killed and other may have been hurt. Please look into this no one else would give me there time. Timing belt tensioner broke while driving, causing problems including rough idle, idle rpm cycling, surging, bucking, higher than normal rpms on deceleration, problems persist after three visits to dealer. *et

Consumer experiencing ongoing problem with noise coming from the front area of the vehicle; whenever consumer makes a turn or rolls over a bump, the vehicle would make a grinding sound. Vehicle been in/out dealer shop on four occasions. Vehicle has been inspected /repaired, but problem still occurs. *ak

Vehicle experienced numerous brake failures, brake pads and rotors have been replaced many times. *slc

Battery light came on and stayed on while driving, the dealer was contacted and appointment was scheduled. While driving car 13 miles for repairs, 50-55 mph, the engine light came, on and the engine caught on fire. Fire department came. The dealer cannot duplicate the problem. *ak

While driving approximately. 60-65mph, stratus rearended another vehicle. Upon impact, neither air bag deployed. Driver sustained minor injuries. *ak

Brakes would make noises whenever applied. The brake pedal would go to floor very easily. Vehicle did not stop readily. Took to dealer & nothing was found to be out of place.*ak

Vehicle was brought in for timing gear belt pulley system. Car engine winded really loud. Engine head gasket was blown and leaking oil, foamy whit residue formed around inside of oil cap. Dealer told consumer that may be a manufacturer's defect. Gasket has been replace almost 4 times. *ak

Idler pulley bearing seized up and broke apart and tore timing belt.

The air bag light flashed for a sec then it went off ripping my hand off the stering wheel i had my family in the car . It was loud and my arm had plastic in it . *ak

Parked vehicle in garage and went into the house, about 5 minutes later heard a loud noise, went out to the garage and flames were coming from underneath the hood of the vehicle. Had to pull the vehicle from the garage into the open. Called the fire department and they put fire out. Fireman stated that it was an electrical fire, and the vehicle was totaled. *ak

Vehicle losing over a quart of oil a week. I noticed oil loss a couple of weeks after i purchased the car , but attributed it to normal break in. Now it leaks down on to the exhaust system and may pose a fire hazard. The front brake rotors have been replaced 2 times and are in need of replacement again. They warp in a very short period of time. *ak

Sender continually fails.

On may 27,1998 i called the dealer to have my car looked at because i was having a major oil leak.When the dealer got it in for service they noticed it was a blown head-gasket and fixed the problem for me.On nov. 11,1998 at 38616 miles i now have a bad transmiision and i'm wondering if it is a defect,i have a family member who owns a 1996 dodge stratus and she was expriencing some problems with her transmission.The transmission will not go into 3rd. Or 4th. Gear, all i have is 2nd. Gear even if i were to put it in 3rd. Gear manually.

When coming to a stop vehicle vibrates. Vibration get worse when the air conditioner is being used. Vehicle has been serviced for this problem 6 times. The problem still exists. Please provide any further informaiton. *ak

While driving consumer smelled oil burning which was leaking from engine head gasket, and getting into engine manifold. Dealer has repaired engine head gasket four times, but problem has returned. *ak

Vehicle experienced total brake failure on four occasions. Brake pedal would go to the floor momentarily, and return after pumping the pedal a few times. Vehicle been in dealer's shop on two occasions. Dealer informed consumer that nothing could be found. *ak

I have replaced more parts on this car than i should have had to on a much older car. This is a peice of junk and the dealership will not work with me even though they know that the a/c compressor was defective. There is a huge hole in the side of it and mechanics tell me that is because the steel was too thin in one place. They want about $800.00 to fix it. This is crazy. *ak

Intermittent delayed engagement at vehicle start up. Acceleration shudder during torque converter emcc operation at 28-42mph due to leak in transmission front pump. This is chrylser's a604 transmission that was renamed to 41te transmission in 1992. If i had known chrylser knew they were putting a defective transmission in their new stratus, i would not have bought one.

A/c evaporator emits odor/white flakes through ventilation system, causing headache, burning sensation, congestion. (qcaw)
