Known Recall Investigations
  • Rear suspension lower link detachment investigation # EA09018

On september 22, 2010, isuzu manufacturing services of america, inc (isuzu) submitted a defect information report (nhtsa recall 10v-436) to the national highway traffic safety administration affecting approximately 120,000 model year (my) 1998-2002 isuzu rodeo and honda passport vehicles and my 2002 isuzu axiom vehicles originally sold, or currently operated, in the following states:connecticut, delaware, the district of columbia, illinois, indiana, iowa, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia and wisconsin. All vehicle owners will receive the recall notification.Vehicles 10 years of age or younger will be provided with a free remedy. For vehicles older than 10 years, isuzu will offer a free remedy provided the vehicle is presented to an isuzu service facility or a honda dealer (as applicable) no later than twelve (12) months after the date of mailing of the notification letter to the owner. The report describes a condition where vehicles operated in states using certain road deicing materials may exhibit excessive corrosion which may result in the left or right rear suspension lower link bracket becoming detached from the frame.According to isuzu a detached lower link may affect vehicle handling and potentially cause a crash. The office of defects investigation (odi) analyzed complaint data and found that 114 of the 115 (99%) alleged complete lower link separations from the frame occurred in vehicles originally sold or operated in a state covered by the recall. Of these complaints 2 involved alleged crashes and 21 involved alleged loss of control incidents. The alleged crashes and loss of control incidents all occurred in vehicles operated in a state covered by the safety recall.Isuzus recall instructs dealers to inspect the rear suspension lower link bracket area to determine if corrosion is present. For vehicles in which corrosion has damaged the lower link bracket area and affected its connection to the vehicle frame, a reinforcement bracket will be installed. For vehicles with no visible signs of corrosion, dealers with apply anti-corrosion material to reduce the likelihood of corrosion developing in the future. Based on isuzus safety recall, this engineering analysis is closed.A copy of the recall may be assessed on nhtsas website using the reference number above.

  • Rear suspension lower link failure investigation # PE09030

During preliminary evaluation pe09-030, isuzu motors america, inc (isuzu) noted two primary differences once the rear suspension lower link separation occurs between the alleged defect (separation of the lower link from the frame) of this investigation and a safety defect involving lower link separation from the rear axle addressed by isuzu in safety recall 00v-058.In the case of the defect condition identified in recall 00v-058, isuzu stated that the attachment bolt could detach fully, causing separation of the lower link from the rear axle possibly creating a loss of vehicle control. Isuzu also stated that this condition occurs early in the service life of the vehicle. In this investigation isuzu noted lower link separation from the frame is a progressive corrosion issue with prior warning to consumers.Isuzu also stated that in the event of a lower link separation from the frame, the vehicle is still controllable and can be safely stopped. The office of defect investigation (odi) analyzed complaint data provided by isuzu and america honda motor company, inc (honda), as well as vehicle owner questionnaires submitted to odi from consumers. In total, there were 60 unique reports of lower link separations from the frame including 1 alleged crash and 7 loss of vehicle control incidents that may be related to the alleged defect. Most of these complaints indicated that there was no warning prior to the link separation. This preliminary evaluation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea09-018) to further assess the scope, frequency and risk to motor vehicle safety of the alleged defect in the subject vehicles.

My vehicle has been at a honda dealership for 3 weeks. It has damage related to an active recall. The entire back part of the frame is rusted, to the point there is no 'meat' to fix this issue. We are now getting zero response from honda or the dealership, and need assistance in a positive resolution. The honda case # is: 10v436000. This vehicle when towed had tires separating from the body, and is way beyond a patch-fix. I filled up the tank, apparently, the weight caused a separation in the frame. When stationary, a back tire separated from the frame when the tow truck attempted to load the vehicle. The extent of frame damage renders this un-fixable...But now our honda rep and our dealership service manager will not return phone calls. Please help!

My car is involved in the recall 10v436000 buy back program but the dealers as well as honda itself will not follow the nhtsa guide lines they are making excuses and lying to me about responsibility this car has 111,000 miles on it and should last a very long time but the frame is completely rusted and cannot be driven and the electrical problems are all over because of the frame movement . I believe that there are other recalls on this vehicle but honda refuses to take responsibility for anything .

Nhtsa recall 10v436000 performed in early 2011. "performed link bracket inspection and stage 1 repair op: 4195a2" now, 4 years later. The frame is rusted and crumbled/broken behind the rear differential. Picture of this specific passport uploaded to wikipedia honda passport page, titled "frame rust (2000 passport)" . *tr

Just read web info on fuel gauge not reading correctly after gas tank is about half full on honda passports. My vehicle's fuel gauge moves significantly on turns and at times check engine light comes when tank is about gas 1/2 full. This just started happening when the vehicle had approx 87k miles on it. When gas tanked is topped off - usually around 8-10 gals - everything starts working fine again. Heard honda may have announced a recalled this for honda passports but up to year model1999. But given the same symptom and just started happening on my year 2000 vehicle ..Thinking all years should be included. I have not talked to dealer yet. Honda maintains a great reputation and should offer an expanded recall. Given the age, the vehicle is like new and otherwise runs fantastic and i have low milage on the vehicle. Would imagine the same parts used in 1999 passports (fuel sending unit/lever) is same in the year 2000. Thank you for further research and information to honda passport owners. *tr

I was driving about 25 mph and someone pulled right in front of me requiring me to slam on the brakes. I heard something snap or break in the rear of the car. It was very hard to steer, the car seemed to wiggle and sway. I pulled over as soon as i could, within a half block. I looked for a flat tire, nothing seemed wrong so i tried to drive home. There was a horrible rubber scraping sound from the left rear. I got out again and saw that the tire was wedged against the wheel well. I called a wrecker and had it towed to my mechanic. As soon as he saw it the mechanic called me and said, "your car is totaled, the frame is rotted out." so i had to have the car towed back to my home. My neighbor also owns a 2000 honda passport and he told me that there had been a recall for the frame, suspension for my model and year. I found the recall #10v436000 at http://www.Hondaproblems.Com/recalls/passport/2000/ i called honda on monday, december 9 to report that i had never received a recall notice and asked if they could help me. I had read about a buyout program. The rep said that the recall was only good for two years and had expired, there was nothing she could do to help me. This is a serious part of the car, had i been on the interstate i could have had a horrific accident. Honda knew they had a problem, how can they limit the repair to two years? There were 149,992 vehicles involved in this recall, is there anyone that can help me? *tr

I am the 2nd owner of this vehicle. It is in great condition everywhere other than the rear frame. I had no idea how bad the rust was under the vehicle in the rear. I bought the suv 1 year ago in august for $2700 with 121,000 miles. I took excellent care of it & on 10/3/13 i was making a right hand turn onto a highway which was a 55 mph speed limit. As i accelerated my front end wobbled back & forth bad and at 25 mph my suv darted to the right shoulder of the road & i slammed on the brakes missing the guard rail. By 1 foot. I had to have it towed home due to my driver side rear tire was pinchedinto my rear bumper. My body shop guy said the rear trailing arm rusted right off the frame & esd most likely not fixable unless i want to spend over $1500 to have the frame cut out & try to find good metal to weld too if there is any. An the other side is bad too. I had no idea this could happen &i had my passport at the honda dealership. 6 months ago & asked the garage boss if there was any recalls the vehicle missef or if there is anything i should. Watch out for & he said no. I could have been killed if i would have been going faster. How does a 13 year old vehicle rust out that fast? Honda should be held responsible for selling unsafe vehicles. *tr
