• Recall 17765 [USA]: An increase in the electrical resistance might prevent the air bag from activating during a vehicle crash.
  The driver's side air bag was improperly assembled and could cause the air bag warning light to illuminate from increased electrical resistance.
  dealers will inspect the air bag assembly wiring harness connector to determine if it contains a terminal holder. If it does not, one will be installed.

• Recall 1996156 [Canada]: Suspension
  The bolts fastening the rear suspension trailing arm to the chassis may fail. If one of these bolts fail, the trailing arm may become detached on one side, allowing the wheel to move rearward of its intended position. This could change the handling characteristics of the vehicle and could lead to loss of control and a crash without prior warning. Correction: dealers will install improved bolts on both mounting positions of the trailing arms.

• Recall 1995143 [Canada]: Airbag
  Note: vehicles equipped with air bags. Defect: affected vehicles do not have a terminal holder fitted to the female portion of the connector which connects the clock spring contact assembly to the air bag wiring assembly. This could cause the electrical resistance within the terminal connection to increase over time and cause the supplemental restraint system (air bag) warning lamp to illuminate. Correction: a terminal holder will be installed.

When i pressed down on the clutch in order to shift, the clutch pedal bracket broke off. I am now unable to use the clutch.*ak

Airbag light has come on. Dealer has not inspected vehicle.*ak

Transmission is losing speed and revs highly. It jerks before it goes back to normal driving conditions. Transmission was replaced two times before because it was leaking. This is possibly the third time that transmission nees to be replaced. Dealers and other mechanics have not explained reasons for ongoing problems. *ak

While traveling at 30-35 mph transmission went out, and vehicle started to lock up and skid across the street.*ak

Air bag light came on when car was started. Dealer doesn't know why after running a diagnostic test. Dealer wants to start by replacing air bag parts until light goes off (starting with the $600 chip). Dealer claims recall was performed on this car in july 1995. In 1996, this vehicle was in a "fender bender" but air bag light did not come on and air bag did not deploy. This vehicle was never in a major accident and there should be no reason why the air bag system should just fail out of the blue.*ak

While driving under normal conditions, clutch pedal pedal bracket disconnected and fell off. Please provide any additional information/attachments.*ak

After turning off vehicle, consumer could smell a paint odor in passenger's compartment, then vehicle would fail to restart. Also, after diconnecting air hose and reconnecting air hose vehicle will restart. Dealer had been contacted.*ak firestone tires keep going flat, size p175/65r14, consumer was once told the problem is with the rims. *slc

Airbag light would stay on. Dealer ran vehicle through a diagnostic test, and ran code out which turned off the light. However, airbag light came back on later that day. Dealer did not mention of any recall announced. *ak

I can not shift to first from second,i hav to go 3rd then go to first/you can not drive with the windows open ,the smoke get inside the car. *ak

Air bag warning light remains illuminated, indicating a malfunction within the system. Dealer replaced air bag module. Please give any further details.*ak

The consumer was traveling about 60mph on the highway, and with no prior warning saw flames shooting up though the hood area. Consumer pulled over immediately, and notified the police. Vehicle was towed to the dealership.*ak

The driver side door knob will not let you open the door from the outside or inside. You have to lift the driver side door to get the door open. *ak

Rear axle bushing and both rear shocks were replaced. Nlm

This vehicle rear ended a 9 ton truck @ approximately 30 mph. Truck went up and over vehicle. Air bags did not deploy. Previously this vehicle was rear ended on freeway at 45 mph with a red air bag light being the only result. *ak

While driving on highway travelling north bound, lost control of vehicle, ran off the road, and struck a tree. Upon impact, driver's side airbag didn't deploy. Contacted dealer. *ak

While driving at 65 mph vehicle was struck from the rear by another vehicle traveling at 110 mph, consumer's vehicle was pushed into a guardrail, and the air bags did not deploy. Driver suffered injuries to the neck/back/ hip, and chest. Also, passenger suffered back/neck injuries. Dealer has not been contacted. *ak *ml

While traveling on the highway and without prior warning, vehicle went into neutral. Dealership was aware of problem.*ak consumer states that while driving and pushing the gas pedal down a little to accelerate, the engine revved but the car didn?T go anywhere, consumer let off the gas pedal immediately and the engine revved to idle, hit the gas again and the transmission finally shifted to a forward gear. Consumer replaced the second transmission but the problem still exists. *yd

This is the second time that this happend. Previous time was told it was timing failure. Air bag light came on and stays on. Dealer could not get it to go off(not due to accident). Check engine light came on. Took car to dealer. Suposidely fix it. Came back on in two hours. I

While driving at 65 mph, my car began to make a loud noise. Unable to stop, i proceeded off the exist, and i could hear parts falling out. Upon stopping, i opened the hood to find the vehicle in flames. After consulting with the mccafferty hyundai dealer, they informed me that the a/c compressor seized causing it to catch on fire. However, because it was quite cool that day, i did not have my air conditioner on.

Engine failure renders vehicle unserviceable/unusable

Since november of 1997 i have had on going problems with this vehicle. There has been one default after another. In november of 1997 the engine caught fire. The transmission was replaced in july of 1999, since repacement of transmission the waterpump, and timing were replaced, and the radiator was repaired. Now this new problem has arose with the engine. One other thing not mentioned before is the car stops or shuts off with no gage indication at all.

A defective generator/alternator caused battery to blow up, resulting in wiring harness melting. This could cause a fire. Also two computers blew up. *ak

Alternator is exceeding its limit, is overcharging, which causes blow out of other electrical compontents. *ak

Since having the car, i've experienced problems with the transmission to include trans jumping out of gear occassionally, failure for gear shift to go into gear, complete failure of the transmission. Other problems include electrical problems, i.E., alternator, battery, etc. But most prevelant was the transmission. I recently had to completely replace the transmission, torck converter, kick-down switch at a cost of approx. $3,100. When i contacted the dealer and hyundai, i was completely blown-off by both. I feel these are excessive repairs for a 3 year old car that has been serviced and maintenanced regularly. I also experience foul oders coming from the air conditioner as well as breaking problems. *ak

Transmission shut off when shifting gears. It's an intermittent problem. The pistons would be knocking loud. Will be taking vehicle to dealer. *ak

Had to replace wire harnist, battery, postive cable, fuse wire ontop of postive cable, want to know if there is a problem with this . They told me the fuse ontop of positive cable heated up and started the fire

The rear doors do not want to open and/or unlock at times. They stick . To get open (if you can) you must push in and lift up. Very unsafe would not beable to open from inside either. Car has never been in an accident. *ak

Engine head gasket blew out & was leaking oil. At 30mph, vehicle had died out/stalled. Had vehicle towed to mechanic who had engine head gasket repaired & now vehicle vibrates. *ak

While depressing clutch pedal, mounting bracket weld broke.

Brake rotors and pads failed.

Idle speed controller failed causing vehicle to stall.

Oil and engine light (gauge) failed to work when engine failed.

While driving and stopped at a stop light, no indicator light came on, vehicle made clinking noise and cut off. Dealer states extended warranty does not cover engine, and cannot remedy the problem. *ak

Purchase vehicle in may of 1997 had 49000 miles on car timing belt broke at 74000 miles belt had already been replace because it had a gates belt on the car when i had it replaced broke again in november of 1999 with 94761 miles only a little over 20000 miles on belt hyundai book says replace timing belt every 60000 miles but timing belt is breaking every 20000 miles.

Right rear trailing arm bolt had been broken for quite some time. Bolt is rusted and pitted, 3 mechanics, a welder, and a tool maker all concur that it must have been broken for well over a year. The bolt is the one that connects the trailing arm to the frame. It had been broken for long enough to pull through the frame tearing it. Bolt had been working free for that time. Had it not been for a noise previous to the bolt coming free and the slow speed the whole rear end would have probably come apart resulting in (at interstate speed) injury and most probably a fatality.

Timing belt/engine failure.

Main fuse 60 amps and 3 other secondary fuses melted.In addition, alternator/starter relay failed/1 tooth in flywheel broke and battery exploded.

Air bag control unit failed.

While the vehicle is in drive, the vehicle drags and when it finally gets into gear it thrust forward extremely fast, the dealer replaced the transmission, the problem reoccured 2 years later and the transmission was replaced again, now less than one year later the consumer is experiencing transmission problems again. Nlm

Alternator assembly failed causing damage to battery.

Clutch mounting bracket is broken. When pushing on the clutch the brake light comes on, and the brakes and clutch feel loose. Dealer contacted, and no warranty with a major problem, at owners expense. *ak

The driver's side air bag light stays on.

Clock spring assembly failed.

The airbag light is coming off and on . The dealer told the owner that the airbag has gone bad and could explode. Dealer told owner that airbag is not covered under the extended warranty that is on the vehicle. *ak

In the case of air bag, i was hit by a f350 pickup at 40 miles ph and the bag did not deploy, but the light came and it will not go off. Called hyundai dealer and they said my vin number is not applicable for the recall. In the case of the gas problem, the smell of gas permiates through out the car with no logical explanation. In the case of the wiring failure, it was the wiring harness which caught on fire and was to be replaced at my cost , which was done by rick case mazda in 1999.*ak

Recall 95v101000//95-01-997; the air bag light stays on all the time. Dealer contacted, and stated if in a crash, the air bag would not come out. Estimated $50 computer check to find the defect to remedy the problem. *ak *ml

No deployment of passengers airbag in accident.

Water temp sensor assembly failed.

Driving down a hill when another turning into same lane, hit driver in front. Pushed bumper into motor area. Air bag did not deploy upon impact. Took to dealer after insurance investigator checked to see why air bag did not deploy. *ak

Bolt that holds trailing arm to the rear axle of the vehicle broke. However, it never came out of its bushing, could result in a loss of control. *ak

While parked an electrical short in the ignition caused the wiring under the hood to catch on fire. *ak

Spark plug assembly failed due to short in system.

Vehicle keeps jerking/skipping when driving, the transmission appears to be defective, dealer cannot duplicate the problem. *ak

Heaterdefroster/ventilation system will not clear windows inside of vehicle, windows freeze up on the inside, causing vision problems. *ak

Rocker cover gasket and oil pan gasket failed resultin in oil leak.

The vehicle was struck on the driver's side and partially in the front of the car and the hood was split and the airbags did not deploy. The other vehicle was going 30-40 mph. *ak

The air bag warning light goes off and on and a popping noise comes from the steering wheel when the light goes on. Vehicle will be repaired. *ak

During frontal impact, the driver's and passenger's side automatic seat belts did not lock. Please describe details. *ak

Pinging noise/rotten egg smell from catalytic converter.

When starting the vehicle air bag light came on and would not go off. *ak

Catalytic converter replaced.

Cluster lights to sunroof shorted, causing plastic fixture to melt.

Electrical short; the electrical system shorted out while driving . Please explain. *ak

Engine fire.

Inside door handle on rear right side broke off, and door cannot be opened. Drivers side cracked where the outer edge is. The door has to be opened from the outside. Other two handles have a crack that gets bigger when door is opened, dealer contacted, and cannot duplicate the problem. Both the driver side door and the rear left door have flown open while driving. *ak *ml

Pressure buildup in gas tank, split gas line at filler neck of tank, have to keep gas cap loose to release pressure in order to avoid leakage, continuous smell of gasoline inside vehicle, have to keep windows cracked to avoid occupants becoming nauseated; also replaced seat track/valve cover gasket/stabilizer/steering rack. *ak

On the freeway where a steering lock up was experienced which caused the vehicle to run into a curb. Please describe. *ak

The gas light stays on and cannot tell when runs out of gas. Dealer said that every 3 months vehicle needed to be seen for service on the gas tank. *ak

Pulling in to gas station, vehicle skidded on ice, hit guardrail of pumps, passenger front side was hit, airbag did not deploy. *ak

While braking lightly, rear wheels locked up; rainy weather; no warning, wheels broke loose, started spinning;vehicle hit by 18 wheel vehicle;loaner car/totaled

While driving at speed 20 mph, impact 11:00 position, then again 12:00 position, driver side air did not deploy. Tt
