• Recall 13203 [USA]: Due to high steering load events, vehicles can exhibit broken steering gear attaching bolts or frame rail cracking at the steering gear attaching point increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  During assembly of the frame, a fillet weld that joins the inner steering gear attachment reinforcement to the frame rail, was omitted.
  dealers will inspect the vehicles for cracks in the frame rail. Vehicles that show cracks will be equipped with reinforcement plates. Vehicles that are found to be free of cracks will have a slot cut in the cross member and the fillet weld will be added.

• P2357 [1] Cylinder 10 – pressure too low

The driver's door hinges came off the body of the jeep while driving down the highway. The passenger side hinges are also loose. It looks to be faulty welding on the part of the manufactorer.

My vehicle is experiencing the death wobble because of the oem steering and suspension components. I was driving down ronald reagan parkway in davenport, fl pulling a trailer and hit a minor bump pot hole in the road when my jeep started to exhibit the 'death wobble,' i was able to control it, but being on a two lane road and a truck next to me i was scared of an accident because of the wobble.

I own a 1993 jeep cherokee and the front brake caliper on the driver side locked up on july 4, 2017, while driving around town, about 15 minutes after being started, without any hard braking. The next day the caliper was replaced. Today, 9/28/2017, while driving at highway speed about 20 minutes after car being started to drive to work, a shimmy developed. When i got to work a few miles later, the caliper was locked again and was smoking. In 1998, while driving my father's 1993 jeep cherokee (not the same one i now own), the same problem occurred that the driver side front brake caliper locked onto the tire and caused a lot of smoke. I assumed it was an isolated incident at the time. I understand that things will go wrong with older vehicles in the normal course of being used and becoming worn, but this seems to be a very common point of failure on this particular model and year that started happening when the vehicles were still relatively new. Brake problems are an extremely dangerous thing to occupants of the vehicles in question, and the public at large, so i feel this merits being reported because everything else about this vehicle has been strong and reliable, and i still see so many of them out on the highways and city streets. I clicked "next" and one of the questions is, "was there a fire?" i am going to click yes because there was a copious amount of smoke but want to clarify here that there were no flames that i saw.

Found 8 wire strands protruding from sidewall of one tire on front of car while washing them

Hitting bumps at 55 mph sends vehicle into uncontrollable frenzy. Cannot control vehicle, must slam on brakes and practically come to a complete stop to regain control. I know thousands of jeeps suffer this "death wobble" please do something. *js

Wiper motor not working

Tl* the contact owns a 1993 jeep cherokee. The contact stated that after refueling, gasoline leaked from the fuel tank. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 193,000. *tr

My car is a 1993 jeep cherokee is has a same problem as a recall #97v069000 it need the reinforcement plates.,the frame is crack and the steering gear attaching bolts are broken because of it, i went to the deller marino chrysler jeep dodge location 5133 w irving park rd ,and i spoke with the assistant service manager jorge alicea, about this recall because my vin # is not in the list well please make understand this people my car has the same problem than the recall shows please ,my car is affected with this problem my vin my car a jeep cherokee sport body style carry all and [xxx]or my email i use this car for work please [xxx]. *tr

Ignition switch failed while trying to start..Hard to turn, then quit altogether, had to have jeep towed to repair facility. Had to have switch and coil replaced . The coil was located in a bad place on motor. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1993 jeep cherokee sport. The vehicle came equipped with a keyboard for a keyless entry system. The contact entered the vehicle with his wife and, as soon as the doors closed, they locked automatically. He and his wife attempted to unlock the doors, but were unsuccessful. The contact began to smell burning wires, but could not determine exactly where the smell originated. After 20 minutes of attempting to unlock the two front doors, they were able to unlock; however, the two rear doors still cannot be opened or unlocked. After the two front doors became unlocked, the contact noticed that none of the instrument panel gauges were working. The speedometer, odometer, amp gauge, and fuel gauge were all malfunctioning. The contact took the vehicle to a local shop and was informed that the keyboard for the keyless entry had shorted out and burned all the wiring in the vehicle. The vehicle has since been repaired. The failure mileage was 130,000 and current mileage was 131,000. Updated 09/10/08 *bf updated 09/15/08. *jb

1993 jeep cherokee 4x4 4.0 in-line 6. Jeep stalls at 1/4 tank of gas while at idle. Jeep bucks on highway at 1/4 tank of gas, continues to run. This problem just started. Jeep stalls at 1/4 tank of gas while making left hand turns, this problem has been constant since owned for two years. Tune-up done, fuel filter replaced. Researched left hand turn stalls seem to be consistent with other jeep owners complaints, suspect faulty fuel tank. *tr

Driver seat belt (female connector) no longer works. Shouldn't these outlive the vehicle itself? *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1993 jeep cherokee sport. While the vehicle was stopped for approximately five to six seconds, the contact was rear ended. The two front seats went into a full reclining position. The contact sustained injuries and a police report was filed. The seats are still locked in the reclined position. The vin and engine size were unknown. The current mileage is 187,100 and failure mileage was 187,050.

Tl*the contact owns a 1993 jeep cherokee. The vehicle accelerated while in the reverse position and crashed into a building. The contact was unable to stop the vehicle by depressing the brake pedal. The vehicle was destroyed. There were no warning indicators or injuries. The local pep boys could not diagnose the failure. A police report was filed. The contact possesses pictures. The current and failure mileages were 100,000.

Dt: consumer's daughter was driving through walmart parking lot at a low speed and heard a loud noise coming from the front end of the vehicle, she slowly drove home about four miles. Consumer inspected the vehicle after she arrived home and discovered the left driver's side lower control arm attachment point on the axle was detached by the weld. Had towed to a firestone outlet that had performed service on the vehicle, replaced anti roll bar attachment points that had worn out approximately one day prior. The service repair shop said they had never seen anything like this before. They noted there was no abuse of the vehicle or prior accident, the weld had simply failed. They could not repair this because of the liability issues, they did refer to a specialty welding shop and a jeep dealer, and they would not perform service as well for the same reasons. The only way to repair was to replace the entire front axle. No repairs have been made at this time. *ak

After the consumer shifted the vehicle in reverse, the vehicle lurched backward and ran over the consumer. Consumer was transported to the local hospital by ambulance. The dealer and the manufacturer were not notified.

Dt: the owner was driving on highway and front end shook. Owner called dealer, who stated vehicle needed an alignment. The repair was done. Then the problem occurred a week later. Owner kept calling dealer. They didn't have any answer. Then, owner contacted a private mechanic, who said that this was just a bad truck. About week later while driving, got pulled over and received warning about the tail lights being out. Then it was taken back to dealer, who repaired the taillights. Also, the brake lights went out. Owner took vehicle to personal mechanic, who put in a switch, but owner didn't know what kind of switch. A week after purchase the vehicle began having brake problems. The brakes were squealing and grinding under normal braking conditions. The brakes were replaced. The vehicle had brake problems around 70,000 miles. The front brakes were vibrating again after about 2 weeks after repairs. There have been no more repairs at this time. Owner has not contacted jeep. There were no recalls. In february the oil plug came out. The vehicle was repaired by the owner's mechanic and the jeep dealership paid for this. *ak

Dt: the contact stated the hood latch did not work properly. This caused the hood to open. This was the second vehicle that the contact owned that had this problem. He took the vehicle to the dealership, and they stated the hood latch needed to be replaced and he will have to pay for the repairs himself. He did get parts from a salvage yard to temporarily fix it. *ak

Hitting some bumps in road makes the jeep shake violently where you start to lose control. Have to put brakes on and try to slow down quickley to keep control.This is a 1993 .Also had a 1996 it was the same way.*ak

Driver's side and passenger's side seat belt harness strap will lock into place. Consumer took vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic advised consumer that the vehicle was not under warranty. Consumer had to pay for repairs. *ak

While driving 20 mph, the consumer was unable to turn left. The consumer tried numerous times and was unable to do so. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. The mechanic informed the driver that the steering gear box needed to be replaced. Please provide further details. *jb

The inside driver's door top hinge broke and the bottom hinge was partially broken, making it unsafe to drive . Dealer was notified, and suggested to the consumer to report it to nhtsa. *ak

For over two years now i have had a severe wobble on the front right tire. I have met two other people that own a 1992 and 1993 that complained about the same problem. At 50 mph the front right tire will wobble uncontrollably and feels like the tire is going to snap off. The entire front end has been replaced along with the tires, in an on-going trial and error process of attempting to discover what is causing the severe wobble and how to correct it. We've had around $5,000 in parts replaced in the front end, to no avail. The wobble is worse than ever and the vehicle is unsafe to drive. I need help. Any recalls? *jb

While driving 35 mph throttle stuck. This problem forced the consumer off the road and vehicle rolled over. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. The cause was not determined. *ak

The ignition will not turn back. It is locked in place. I have to pull the wire off the distributor & the battery cable to kill it. This happens when my brake light on the instrument panel comes on. Also, the heater, ws wipers & radio will not come on. My brake pedal stays down constantly, i have to physically pull up on it each & every time (the law has stopped me for this). My brakes make a horrible grinding sound at times. I have found similar complaints with all linking abs system failure. *jb

Ignition does not always turn over. It sometimes takes 15 minutes of trying to turn the key. I sometimes have to take the vehicle out of park and put it back into park to get it to start. It is not the battery. It seems be related to the vehicle being in park or neutral and the key turning over. This has been occurring over the past 4 months. *ak

Consumer states that while driving at any speed and with no warning vehicle will shut off, causing consumer to pull over. It will be hard to get the vehicle started again. Dealer notified. *ak

Consumer can be driving down the highway and vehicle cuts off without warning. Consumer has taken it to the shop 5 times, and the mechanic could not find out why the vehicle was doing this. After it cuts off, it takes at least 20 minutes to a half an hour to get it started again. *ak

1. Loss of automobile rear in stability. 2. It has not completely failed. 3. Several visits to mechanic concerning the problem including the date of this complaint. It was concluded that the rear springs and shackles are bad.*ak

Consumer states that the hinge on the driver side door broke off and the door was not able to close any more. Contacted dealer and the dealer is not willing to do anything. *mr

You need to fix this nhsta web site so people can enter complaints without all the validation - it was very painful to enter this request and i bet many people just give up. Examples: i looked for chrysler and could not find "other" was not an option, too many other companies to scroll through - finally i realized daimler chrysler. Also i entered a perfectly valid and the web site would not accept it saying it was invalid. Now - on to the real issue... 1993 jeep cherokees with 50k-70k miles will stall on highway/other roads (quite dangerous). Vehicle restarts after 1-2 retries. Took to 3 shops and they found nothing and finally found that crank shaft sensor had to be replaced when i met someone else who had same problem. *tr

Cruise control would not disengage either manually or by applying brakes. While driving at 30mph handle comes off of stick shift, causing loss of control.*ak

Frame rail cracked, where steering assembly is attached to it, making it diffcult to steer.*ak

While driving the vehicle and make left turn or right turn, vehicle will make a noise which is coming from the power steering gear. Dealer has been notified. Nlm

While driving consumer heard a popping sound. Dealer determined a crack in frame rail on left front. There is a recall but this vehicle is not affected due to vin. *ak

Brakes are corroded. Every thousand miles brakes are replaced, and they are warped. Dealership is aware of problem.*ak

Driving down the interstate the tire failed without warning. The sidewall gave away. I went to the firestone dealer and was told that the tire was not on recall and it must of been a road hazard problem of which i could not find . I replaced the tire with a different brand and dealer. I still have the tire in possesion. Car was put into reverse from park in driveway. With brakes still applied, engine raced and tires began spinning. Car raced in reverse approximately 50 feet,hitting another vehicle and causing damage to both vehicles. Drive shaft noted hanging from vehicle. Chrysler mechanic replaced rear drive shaft, diff. Yoke, though report "no high idle condition found" and that "throttle body is operating correctly". Mechanic did explain that the cause of this type of incident and damage to drive shaft could be engine racing while brakes still applied. *ak

Door seals and wind noise have been a continual problem. *ak

Driver's side door top bracket has torn and detached away from body of jeep due to rust and corrosion, causing door to almost fall off. Bracketed areas are not exposed to elements and owner's jeep has been garaged 85% of the time in texas climate. Dealer's body shop believes this is unusual problem in this part of the country and feels it's a manufacturing default. Body shop also noticed rust starting in other brackets in doors. Owner took jeep to dealer, but dealer refuses to do anything about it, unless it's at owner's expense. Owner contacted daimler/chrysler's customer assist. Ctr. At 800-992-1997, which alerted owner to nhtsa's investigation of this problem. Jeep owner believes a recall is in order. Each jeep door has two brackets. At this time, dealer and manufacturer refuse to correct defect at their expense unless a recall is ordered.*ak

Vehicle would stall while traveling at highway speed of 50-60 mph, this problem has occurred on nine occasions, dealer/manufacturer were notified.*ak the dealer replaced the crank position sensor.*jb

Driver side door hinge has separated twice. Was repaired at 1st separation at our cost by a jeep dealer. Steering column was making a clicking noise and steering was very stiff. Was repaired at my cost by having the spring retainer and cover replaced. It has failed again . Original failure 10/99. New failure 6/01.

Took car in for tune up, sounded like it was missing. Spent $1200, car still sounded poor, dealer said it was catylitic converter pluggae, fixed that for $170, still made noise, dealer investigated siad low compression in cylinder, then found cracked head, fixed that for $900, still sounded bad, dealer investigated, stated that lifter rod failed, cam grinded rod and scored cam, requiring new engine. Freind in va has similar incident, said jeep was aware of failure and had a technical bulletin on proper repair. *ak

On 4/28/2000 i was traveling at about 65 mph in el paso, tx, when the tire tread separated from the tire on the left rear tire of my 1993 jeep cherokee. When the left rear tire failed, the vehicle started shaking very violently and the back end of the vehicle swung around to the right. At that time, the vehicle started tipping to the right and then the vehicle spun out completely. The vehicle spun around several times before coming to a rest. This occurred during 5pm rush hour traffic on a very busy road. I was extremely lucky that i did not sustain any injuries but my vehicle sustained damage to the rear left wheel well and body damage where the tread came off and hit the back end of the body of the vehicle. The tires were purchased at a firestone dealer in 6/1996. The tires were firestone firehawk atx tires. Unfortunatley, i no longer have the failed tire since i was not aware of the problem when the accident occurred. I do have all the receipts showing the purchase of the firestone tires as well as documentation on replacement tires as well as receipts for the parts on my vehicle that had to be repaired due to the tire failure. During annual state inspection, mechanic found a large area of corrosion, approximately 16 x 8 inch in floor pan above the catalytic converter. This area has a quarter size hole at the center of it, extending into the interior below the rear seat, which could allow exhaust fumes to enter the passenger compartment. The lack of a heat shield, which according to the dealer's parts department, did not exist for this model caused the undercoating to melt and exposed the metal for corrosion.

Front disc brake disc/hub separation

The passenger door upper hinge had slowly become unattached to the body of the vehicle. There was never any rough usage of the door. The hinge now is completely unattached and the door is useless and cannot be opened for fear of it falling off. The driver door is just now showing signs of the same problem. This vehicle was well taken care of during its ownership. This is a manufacture defect that we need to take care of and simply cannot afford it. I hate to see my wife riding in the back seat. It isn't right. It's not our fault.

We were stopped at a red light when we were rear-ended by a truck that was going 55-60 mph. We were thrown forward then backwards, the two front seats broke and threw us into the backseat. We sustained neck and back injuries.

My local dealer make the necessary repairs at no cost to me.... Switch continued to give me intermittent problems but dealer could not duplicate... Recently i left car with dealer who confirms defective inhibitor switch but claims no such recall and no such work performed... Claims they only changed "lockdown cable" under factory/government recall.... Your webpage doesn't confirm either recall... Would you please explain if there is a recall on either part and submit my complaint that a inhibitor switch (internal switch that allows to engage starter in neutral/park) should not fail on a vehicle within 5 years of manufacture date. *ak
