Known Recall Investigations
  • Jeep inadvertent air bag deployment investigation as of 20140529

The office of defects investigation (odi) opened an investigation based on consumer allegations of inadvertent air bag deployments (iabd) occurring after the recall remedy for nhtsa recall 12v-527 had been installed on recalled model year (my ) 2002-2003 jeep liberty and my 2002-2004 jeep grand cherokee vehicles manufactured by fiat chrysler automobiles (fca). The recall was in response to the office of defects investigation (odi) investigation ea12-001 during which data provided by fca indicate that the air bag circuitry inside the occupant restraint control (orc) module can degrade. Orc degradation can result in an inadvertent air bag deployment, without a crash or impact, while the vehicle is being operated. An iabd may involve frontal, side and belt pretensioner devices, and may result in injuries consisting of burns, cuts and bruises to the upper body region, and or the potential for a loss of control and or crash. The remedy fca developed for 12v-527 consisted of installing an in-line jumper harness with an integrated electrical filter for the circuits that connect to the air bag modules (squib circuits). This filter is intended to eliminate transient electrical spikes to the orc which fca asserted are responsible for the iabds.Odi has identified a total of 9 nhtsa complaints across all affected vehicles indicating an iabd event occurring after the vehicle had previously been remedied under 12v-527.In addition, fca reported 12 additional complaints of post-remedy iabd events. The iabd events took place both while driving and while the vehicle was stationary. Six customers incurred injuries consistent with air bag deployments however no crashes were reported. As a response to this investigation, fca has issued 2 new recalls involving the iabd.On january 27, 2015 fca notified odi that it would conduct a safety recall (15v-046) to remedy potential iabd events occurring in 753,176 my02-03 jeep liberty vehicles built through 03/28/03 and my 2002-2004 jeep grand cherokee vehicles built through 5/23/03.Note that this recall, which was scoped based on field iabd events does not include all my 2003 liberty or my 2004 grand cherokee manufactured with the same level orc module.According to fca, the orc degradation and subsequent electrical overstress condition that causes the air bags to deploy inadvertently is not fully remedied with the filter installed during the 12v-527 campaign. To remedy iabds under 15v-046, fca will install a new design orc module using a next generation electrical architecture. The next generation architecture has been used in other non-subject vehicles for many years without evidence of iabd events occurring. In addition to this recall, on october 15, 2015 fca advised nhtsa that it would conduct safety recall 15v-673 to remedy potential iabd events in the remaining 284,089 my 2003 jeep liberty and my 2004 jeep grand cherokee vehicles manufactured with the earlier generation orc module that were not previously recalled.Fca initially did not recall these populations due to the lack of known iabd events. However, fca is now aware of 7 iabd events occurring in this population. After consultation with odi regarding the long term durability and noise toughness of the earlier orc architecture, fca decided to recall this population also. The recall actions initiated by the manufacturer address the safety risks identified by the investigation.Accordingly, the investigation is closed. The odi reports cited above can be reviewed at http://www-odi.Nhtsa.Dot.Gov/owners/searchsafetyissues under the following identification (odi) numbers: 10622092, 10629705, 10619008, 10618842, 10626762, 10640431, 10631954, 10644684, 10650402.

  • Crash related fuel tank fires investigation as of 20120612

Odi has completed an extensive analysis of rear crash fuel tank system integrity data for the subject jeep cherokee, grand cherokee and liberty vehicles (svs). As of june 2013, odi knew of 56 post-collision fatal fires, 28 non-fatal fires, and 6 fuel leak incidents (totaling 90 incidents, 75 fatalities and 58 injuries) involving the svs.Based on this analysis, odi issued a recall request letter (rrl) on june 3, 2013 requesting that chrysler recall the grand cherokee and liberty vehicles due to the rate of fatal, non-fatal fire, and fuel leak incidents when compared to peer vehicles (compact and medium suvs) built during the same time period. In the rrl, odi described how the location of the aft-mounted fuel tank made the svs vulnerable to rear impact crash fuel tank failures.During the analysis, besides the high speed/high severity crashes present in both the sv and peer vehicles, odi observed a significant number of low and moderate speed rear impact crash related fires and leaks, particularly in the liberty. The data also demonstrated that svs originally equipped with towing hitch receivers (trailer hitches) appeared to be under-represented in rear-impact related fuel tank failures. In the rrl, odi requested that chrysler provide its response by june 18, 2013, otherwise nhtsa might proceed to an initial decision that the svs contain a safety-related defect.Chrysler responded to the rrl on june 4, 2013 and vigorously disputed the tentative findings of the rrl.Among other things, chrysler argued that the svs had an overall safety record superior to their peers, met or exceeded all applicable federal motor vehicle safety standards (fmvss) and only experienced fires in severe high energy rear impacts.Nonetheless, while continuing to maintain that the svs did not contain a safety-related defect, chrysler proposed a recall (13v-252) of approximately 2.5m (1.6m currently registered) model year (my) 1993 - 1998 grand cherokee (zj) and my 2002-2007 liberty (kj) vehicles on june 18, 2013.The recall remedy submitted by chrysler would employ a hitch receiver assembly consisting of a steel cross-member behind the fuel tank with forward-projecting arms bolted to the frame rails on either side of the fuel tank. For the my 1999 - 2004 grand cherokee, chrysler indicated it would conduct a customer satisfaction campaign and inspect vehicles equipped with aftermarket tow hitch receivers, and if necessary, replace any such hitch receivers whose conditionmay increase the risk of fuel system failure in rear crashes.Examination of the available data established that the my 1999 - 2004 grand cherokee did not pose the same magnitude of safety risk as the my 1993 - 1998 grand cherokee and my 2002-2007 liberty, particularly in low and moderate speed rear impacts.Because the agency has concluded that the vehicles do not present an unreasonable risk to safety, odi is closing its investigation of the my 1999 - 2004 grand cherokee.Although it was not within the scope of the petition initiating this investigation or the preliminary evaluation preceding this ea, odi also examined the performance of the my 1993 - 2001 cherokee as part of this investigation.Nhtsas assessment of the available data for the cherokee did not establish an unreasonable risk in comparison to peer vehicles.Odi does not approve proposed defect remedies. While offering to install hitch receiver assemblies on the my 1993-1998 grand cherokees and 2002-2007 liberty, chrysler did not, in odis view, provide enough evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed remedy in rear impacts. The complete summary for this closing resume (ea12-005) can be seen by opening the following document:http://www-odi.Nhtsa.Dot.Gov/acms/cs/jaxrs/download/doc/ucm466679/incla-ea12005-9765.Pdf

  • Inadvertent air bag deployment investigation as of 20120123

The investigation was opened based on reports of frontal air bag inadvertent deployments (abids) on model year (my) 2002-2003 jeep liberty vehicles.Data provided by chrysler indicate that the air bag squib filter circuitry inside the occupant restraint control (orc) module can degrade and result in an inadvertent air bag deployment, without a crash or impact, while the vehicle is being operated on the roadway. As of oct. 04, 2012, odi is aware of 131 frontal abids on the jeep liberty vehicles resulting in 62 injuries consisting of burns, cuts and bruises to the upper body region. There were no reports of loss of vehicle control or vehicle crashes. Some owners noted that the air bag warning light (abl) and/or chime had activated just seconds prior to the air bag deployment, while others stated that they did not observe any prior abl illumination.Chryslers analysis found there were no reports of abid on liberty vehicles build after march 28, 2003, a date which coincides with a filter circuit design change in the orc module. The jeep grand cherokee and dodge viper were identified as having the same basic circuit.Odi is aware of 61 frontal abids with 31 injuries on the grand cherokee and none on the dodge viper. In its nov. 07, 2012 letter (12v-527), chrysler announced plans to recall 744,822 jeep vehicles (my02-03 liberty through 03/28/03 and my02-04 grand cherokee through 5/23/03).The remedy consists of installing an in-line jumper harness with an integrated squib circuit electrical filter. In addition, in feb 05, 2013 letter (13v-040), chrysler added the my03-04 dodge viper (through 6/30/04) with a similar remedy, bringing the total number of recalled vehicles to 748,482.During the investigation odi contacted the orc module supplier (trw) to determine the usage of this circuitry in other manufacturers’ vehicles. As a result, odi sent peer information request (ir) letters to five other manufactures.Toyotas response identified 72 frontal abids resulting in 31 injuries. The rate and failure mode/trend were consistent with the subject defective issue as reported by chrysler. In a jan. 30, 2013 letter (13v-029), toyota announced plans to recall 897,709 my2003-2004 corolla/matrix and pontiac vibe vehicles and will utilize a similar remedy to that of chrysler consisting of adding an in-line noise filter to its air bag wire harness.Hondas ir response reported 126 unique abids for both frontal, side impact and/or side curtain air bag deployments across 4 models and 800k vehicles. However upon further review, no more than 25 of the reports appeared to be frontal abids. The remaining involved less aggressive non-frontal abids mainly stemming from side sensors that trigger side and/or side curtain air bags upon undercarriage debris strike or heavy door slams. The honda rates are lower than those from the recalled liberty and toyota models, and with the exception of the my 2002-2003 odyssey, the other honda models failure mode/trend was also less severe.Odi will continueto monitor the affected honda models. There were no reports of abids from the other three peer manufacturers. It should be noted that since the october 2012 data collection date, odi has received 4 additional jeep liberty and 2 jeep grand cherokee reports for frontal abids with two reports alleging loss of vehicle control and crashes. To date, the orc modules from the two crash vehicles have not been available for detailed analysis by chrysler or odi, so the cause of the abids cannot be confirmed at this time.Accordingly the investigation is closed. The odi reports cited above can be reviewed at www-odi.Nhtsa.Dot.Gov/owners/searchnhtsaid under the following identification: 10055405 10166706 10249231 10283484 10335637 10399551 10407276 10428411 10429306 10429579 10435710 10442497 10445840 10446269 10446271 10446972 10448277 10452718 10454657 10455345 10457590 10458823 10463405 10465663 10465861 10467781 10474062 10475197

  • Rear suspension control arm failure investigation as of 20110418

During preliminary evaluation (pe11-013), the office of defects investigation (odi) conducted an analysis of consumer field data from its vehicle owner questionnaire (voq) database and from complaint data submitted to odi by chrysler. Odis analysis of voq data identified 13 complaints alleging failure of either the right or left rear lower control arm due to excessive corrosion. All of these complaints were associated with vehicles originally sold or registered in a "salt belt" state (for the purposes of this investigation, salt belt includes connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, iowa, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia, wisconsin and the district of columbia). All of the complaints were associated with vehicles manufactured in model years (my) 2004 or 2005. Three of these complaints also allege a loss of vehicle control due to the rear lower control arm failure. No complaints related to the alleged defect were identified on vehicles manufactured during mys 2002 or 2003. Similarly an analysis of chrysler complaint data identified 11 complaints (2 of which are duplicative of voqs) alleging failure of a rear lower control arm due to excessive corrosion. All 11 of these complaints were from consumers operating vehicles in a "salt belt" state and vehicles manufactured in either my 2004 or 2005. Three of these complaints (not duplicative of voqs) also allege a loss of vehicle control due to the rear lower control arm failure. The original scope of pe11-013 included my 2002 through 2005 jeep liberty vehicles as they were in the same generation. In response to an information request (ir) letter sent by odi, chrysler provided information and sample components identifying a substantial design change of the rear lower control arms after my 2003 and beginning with my 2004.Analysis of complaint data from both data sources (odi and chrysler) did not identify any applicable complaints (lower control arm failures due to excessive corrosion) from vehicles manufactured during my 2002 or 2003.Similarly no complaints from either data source were found in states outside of those identified as "salt belt" states.Chrysler stated in its ir letter response that its investigation and analysis is ongoing to determine the scope, possible root causes of the unusual lower control arm corrosion, and define possible consequences to motor vehicle safety. Based on odis data analysis from both sources (odi and chrysler data), this investigation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea11-013) focused on vehicles originally sold or registered in a "salt belt" state and produced during my 2004 and 2005, to further assess the scope and potential safety consequences of the alleged defect.

  • Upper ball joint separation investigation as of 20080415

On april 7, 2009, chrysler llc submitted to odi a defect information report indicating that it would recall approximately 42,469 model year 2002 through 2003 jeep liberty vehicles to remedy a defect that can result in upper ball joint separation while driving (09v-119).The affected vehicles were built from may 2002 through september 2002 and originally sold or currently registered in connecticut, delaware, district of columbia, kentucky, illinois, indiana, iowa, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, virginia, west virginia and wisconsin.According to chrysler, the front suspension upper control arm ball joint may experience a loss of lubrication which can lead to corrosion, accelerated wear, and possible separation while driving. Chryslers recall procedure instructs dealers to replace the front upper control arm assemblies on all affected vehicles. Although the specific cause for the defect in the recalled production range has not been determined, odis analysis of upper ball joint separations by vehicle build date shows a clearly defined and significant "spike" in the rate of separation during the five month production range covered by 09v-119, which accounts for only 11 percent of subject vehicle production but approximately 70 percent of separation incidents.Seventy-four (74) of the upper ball joint separation incidents identified by odi occurred in vehicles produced in the recall months, resulting in a separation rate of 174 per 100,000 vehicles. The separation rate in the remaining subject vehicle population is significantly lower, at 9 incidents per 100,000 vehicles. At this time, the data do not show a defect trend in the subject vehicles built outside the recall range after approximately 6-8 years in service. This engineering analysis is closed.

  • Front suspension ball joint separation investigation as of 20060531

On january 6, 2006, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened a preliminary evaluation to investigate alleged front suspension lower ball joint separationin certain model year (my) 2004 jeep liberty vehicles.Odi sent a letter to the manufacturer on february 7, 2006 requesting information about these and other jeep liberty vehicles.Consequently, the investigation was upgraded to an engineering analysis on may 31, 2006 and the range of subject vehicles under investigation was expanded to include all my 2002-2006 jeep liberty vehicles.Odi is aware of 566 non-duplicative complaints alleging involuntary front suspension lower ball joint separation in the subject vehicles.Odi is also aware of one non-injury crash and three alleged injury incidents (two crash incidents and one non-crash incident) related to the alleged defect resulting in minor injuries. The complaint counts reported above only include those my 2002-03 liberty vehicles where the alleged ball joint separation occurred after prior recall repairs were performed (see below) or if the vehicle was not included in the prior recall. The manufacturer conducted a prior safety recall (03v-460) to address the subject issue in certain my 2002-03 jeep liberty vehicles.According to daimlerchrysler¿s november 4, 2003, defect information report (submitted in accordance with 49 cfr part 573), ¿the constant tension lower control arm ball joints may experience a loss of lubrication which can lead to corrosion, accelerated wear and possibly separation from the steering knuckle.A constant tension ball joint which has separated from the knuckle may result in loss of vehicle directional control with minimal advanced warning.¿however, evidence indicates that some vehicles serviced under recall 03v-460 continued to experience involuntary ball joint separations. The manufacturer has made numerous changes in the design, material composition, manufacture, quality control, supply, and installation of the subject ball joints since the prior safety recall was initiated in an effort to improve performance with respect to sealing, lubrication, and joint retention capability.By letter dated august 1, 2006, daimlerchrysler corporation has notified the agency that it will conduct a safety recall to address potentially defective front suspension lower control arm ball joints in approximately 826,687 model year 2002-2006 jeep liberty vehicles manufactured between january 2, 2001 and march 15, 2006, includingall vehicles subject to the prior recall. The nhtsa campaign number assigned to this recall is 06v-288 (daimlerchrysler recall campaign f23).Daimlerchrysler will replace both left and right front suspension lower control arm ball joints with improved components free of charge.Accordingly, this investigation is closed.

  • Front seat belt buckle malfunction investigation as of 20051227

The office of defects investigation (odi) has closed the investigation of front seat belt buckles in model year 2002 jeep liberty vehicles. On august 26, 2006, odi opened preliminary evaluation (pe)05-046 to investigate complaint reports that alleged problems with latching and unlatching the front seat belt buckle.Several of the complaints reported that something was broken inside of the buckle. The investigation found that some buckles may experience failure and separation of one, or both, of the internal latch guide leaf springs.Lack of leaf spring function does not appear to inhibit buckle operation because there is another spring that returns the release button. However, a separated leaf spring may impede the motion of the buckle release button if it becomes engaged with moving parts.Analysis of the available data show that vehicles experiencing problems with the buckles were early production vehicles produced primarily in calendar year (cy) 2001.In early cy 2002, a change was made to the tooling used to produce the buckles. This change affected the leaf springs and appears to have had a positive effect in correcting the buckle issues that were experienced in the early production vehicles. The complaint report trend is down and the frequency of consumer reports in cy 2006 has declined to that of cy 2004.See document file for additional information regarding this resume.

My vehicle is a 6 yr old low mileage chevy equinox the stabilitrak light came up as well as the service power streering. It has also lost power in the highway and stalls or won't accelerate at times which makes is very dangerous since i could get hit by someone in the highway. I have taken it to the dealership and they have replaced o then sensor which cost me $400 but not fixed i took it to another mechanic and they replaced some fuses and sensors another $500 still not fixed. The car is now bach at the dealership and it has been a few days. This seems to be. Very common problem with the equinox as i have spoken to a few people who own one and they just ended up trading their car. I don't want another car payment and for a 6 year old car with low mileage this is not normal

Vehicle has 70,000 original owner miles. Placed the transmission in park but the linkage had failed and the vehicle stayed in d and started to roll off. The linkage on the side of the transmission had failed, the part is: manual control lever - mopar 52104177. It has been revised twice since the original vehicle. The grade was very slight and my wife was still in the vehicle and applied the parking brake. The mechanic thought there had been a recall but could not find one. The same part is used on many jeep, dodge, chrysler vehicles and has been recalled on some models. It is a great safety hazard as the shift liver is in park but the transmission is not. I have made a purchase of a replacement part but the dealer had to order a new one which is now: manual control lever - mopar (52104177ac) after having been revised twice.

My vehicle shows zero recalls so it had the airbag replacement but the airbag light now comes on which i think indicates that the new airbag has malfunctioned. It seems they still used another inferior airbag product or maybe didn't actually replace the old one. The airbag warning light comes on when the car is cranked and stays on. This started happening a few years ago shortly after the airbag "repair" was made by a dealership and the airbag warning light will sometimes be off and sometimes be on. I don't recall the exact date the repair was made but , it seems it was improperly repaired.

Recall # 09v119000 recall date 04/09/2009 suspension: front: control arm and recall # 06v288000 recall date 08/03/06 suspension lower ball joint. Vehicle has had problems driving with speeds over 15mph. Heavy vibration and uneasy driving. Dealer made a repair on one lower ball joint to satisfy recall but the problem is returning. I was informed that the recalls do not include my vin. The recalls are year and model specific. If the vehicle recall affected one control arm lower ball joint it should also apply to the other side. Ball joints should be replaced in sets. Both upper and lower control arm ball joints are part of these recalls. This can be a very dangerous situation for any driver if dealers can use vin number to disclaim necessary recalls on vehicles.

Headlights will shut off while driving at night. While driving at night the headlights will intermittently shut themselves off and then turn back on approximately 10 to 15 seconds later. I have tried switching the lights completely off and back on to see if the headlights began working but they did not. I have searched the web and this site and found multiple complaints with no resolution or recall. This is a serious safety issue as there is no way to immediately correct the issue while driving or predict when it will occur. The vehicle is in motion when this occurs. The lights will come back on and stay on for a little while and then shut back off again. Sometimes they will flash from low beams to high beams and then shut off which makes it dangerous for the cars that are driving towards me. This has happened on several occasions so far and at this point i am scared to drive at night.

Heat is not working it throws out cool/cold air. I have noticed that there have been many liberty owners with the same complaint. It is a pain since i have two young children and the car is so cold you can see everyone's breath. I've had the radiator flushed and had a few things checked and still no heat. Over the summer i had the a/c fixed because it started throwing out hot air. This seems to be a common problem with this car and i'm surprised it has not been recalled. The car is driven on a daily basis in new jersey. Car is mostly driven on city streets and ocasional highway. My jeep was taken to the dealer for recalls, but looking for recalls to see if there was anything for the heat i noticed there was a recall for the control atms/bushings. I was never told about this recall and nothing was done at the dealer. Last month driving one of my bushings broke while i was driving and i lost a wheel.

My husband and i drove my 2002 jeep liberty to dinner and while driving back home, without any notice, the car started blowing heavy smoke from the exhaust pipes. Then it completely died, stopped! No check engine light, no check oil light and no warning whatsoever! I now have this vehicle sitting in my garage because it's going to cost us approximately $5000.00 to fix. While researching this issue on the internet, this issue with the engine just stopping, has happened to hundreds of other people that own this same vehicle. I have not found anyone that feels it's worth fixing. All internet reviews lead me to believe that if replaced, it will happen again. Why isn't chrysler made accountable?? They know they got away with selling a lemon! This could potentially become a safety issue, if someone is driving on the expressway and the engine just stops as mine did! Chrysler should be forced to recall the engine or give back some sort of compensation to everyone that has had this issue. Can't believe, that after so many complaints, the government or better business bureau, have not gotten involved in forcing a recall for this 3.7 engine.

On 10/1/16 i was pulling into my driveway to park my 2002 jeep liberty when the vehicle suddenly accelerated at a high rate of speed, crashing through my garage door. With both feet on the brake pedal and the hand brake applied the jeep would not stop. It smashed into my wife's car parked in the garage, slamming it into the garage refrigerator. With brakes still applied i attempted to shift to neutral to shut off engine when it slammed into reverse and at great speed careened out of the garage and down the street. At no time did i feel i had control of my vehicle. It finally stopped when it hit shrubbery and small boulders. When i start my jeep when engine cold, the rpm's are high as though i pushed doen on accelerator. On 6-13-15 while at a traffic light waiting for the green light (foot on brake)the jeep suddenly accelerated and smashed the car in front of us, causing extensive damage. I did not hear from jeep again until 10/24/2016 when we received a letter informing us that this was not their responsibility. Since the recall r06 states that the airbag could deploy if not fixed, and i took it to a chrysler service center to have this recall done and was told they did not have a fix for this recall but would contact me when one became available. I was never contacted again by jeep letting me know the repair was available. I do not understand why they refuse to fix the vehicle. I am not looking for this as a warranty repair, but it should be their responsibility based on the failure to fix the recall when i took it to them. Also, since the airbags deployed it did damage to the dash and steering wheel of the jeep which will need repairs also. I don't understand why i should be responsible for this expense, and why jeep is failing to handle this. *tr

Well where do i start. Since i have purchased this vehicle in may of 2016 i have replace multiple parts ,but they weren't part of any recalls. But now my concern reviewing recalls for this vehicle and trying to address these numerous defects . I'm almost fed up. My main cover is the j17 recall for the upper control arm ball joint of which a chrysler representative advideo my my vehicle was part of ,which i clueless on how as the recall doesn't specify other than 2002 to 2003 liberty vwhiles . Now i show that they were replaced in the past and now they since are worn in the same description they were recalled in . And chrysler denies responsibility (?) .. Also other concerns with the catylic converter causing a sulfur smell when the vehicle is going up hill aso well as towing . One more thing is numerous online forum about the engine ticking being normal and unfixable other then to replace the engine . Now all this plus the multiple parts i have already replaced a vehicle less then 15 years on the market needed a in other words fully restoration is unacceptable. Especially when i have stock 1948 jeep that need less repairs than this .

I received a recall notice, n46/nhtsa 13v-252. This involved the fuel tank which could result in a fire after a rear end collision. The fix was supposed to be a trailer hitch would be installed to provide protection for the rear mounted fuel tank. Also, i was supposed to receive a $100 visa card for my time and trouble in getting this done. After i took the car to the dealer, john hirsch in cambridge mn, they declined to install the trailer hitch, citing some rust under the car prevented them from doing so. The jeep is a 14 year old minnesota car and most will have some rust on the underbody. If they didn't intend to help alot of the older car owners, i feel my time was wasted and i still have a dangerous problem with the vehicle. Is this chrysler's way of saving dollars on the recalls?

When applying the brakes to stop the vehicle has spontaneously accelerated to a very high speed even though you are standing on the brake with both feet. The back wheels are spinning out of control, burning rubber, and you have to put the vehicle in neutral and turn off the engine. It happens intermittently and has happened several times (all on city streets). We have had two different modules replaced (don't remember what they were called) and it continues to happen.

I have 2 recalls on my jeep right now. N46 and r06- i was told today because i lived in winter conditions that the n46 - cannot be installed because there is corrosion in the frame of the car making it impossible for the hitch to be installed. So if i am in a collision and rear ended my fuel tank could explode. The r06 could not be preformed which is the occupant restraint control module because there have been no parts available since february of 2015. So i could be driving and my airbags could deploy which will result in an accident. I called the fca recall assistance center and they were unable to give me a solution to either issue. I took time off of work to have these issues resolved and it was a waste of my day and time not to mention the fact that my vehicle is unsafe to drive.

The headlights will go off while driving, so far they have come back on within 5 seconds, however, that is a long time without lights. I purchased the car used about 5 months ago so i do not know whether it was happening to the prior owner. It has happened 6 times since the beginning of september 2015. This car was purchased for my daughter who is turning 16y/o in october. The is dangerous for an experienced driver let alone a new driver. This issue is all over the internet dating back to at least 2008. Why has nothing been done.

On july 23, 2015, while driving on the interstate highway, at approximately 55 miles/hour, the odometer, speedometer and cruise control simultaneously stopped working for no apparently known reason. When arriving at my destination in another state, (approx. 60 miles), i researched the internet for potential problems. A number of other 2002 jeep liberty owners had experienced similar problems. Additionally, several owners had experienced engine stalling when braking at a stoplight or intersection. On july 28, 2015, when traveling on an interstate highway, i pulled off to the safety lane to take a telephone call. While i was slowly pushing on the brake pedal to move safely to curb lane, the engine stopped working, as did my steering. Quick thinking - having read prior owners' comments - told me to put the car in neutral and turn the ignition key on. That worked! I got the car safely to the side lane. I am in the process of getting problems corrected; however, other owners have stated that the problem of stalling persists.

On july 15, 2015 i was traveling on a 4 lane road, in town at approximately 35 mph when the airbags in my 2002 jeep liberty spontaneously deployed. The road was smooth, i hadn't hit my brakes, or struck anything when they deployed. Fortunately there was a county deputy sheriff 2 vehicles behind my who stopped to offer assistance and call ems. My injuries were minor. Bruising from my elbow to my wrist along with cuts and scrapes on my right arm. I went to the er for an x-ray because of the immediate swelling and the emt who arrived at the scene recommended it to rule out a broken arm. I contacted chrysler, who informed me that my jeep was part of the #r06 recall which involved the random deployment of airbags, and while they can repair my airbags and dash, they can't fix the module that actually caused my airbags to deploy. Those parts are not available at this time. In other words, my new airbags could deploy again without warning. I received a recall letter regarding this problem months ago and was told at the time that the parts were not available to repair the problem. I no longer feel safe in my jeep.

I keep my car parked in an enclosed garage when it is not being driven. One morning, i went into the garage to drive my car to work. I used my remote to open my car door. I then noticed that the backseat passenger window, immediately behind the driver side was rolled down. I know i had not rolled it down. I got in the car and pushed on the button to raise the window. The window rattled and groaned with an electrical sound. I looked at the window - it had not rolled up. I had to get to work, so i drove my car with the window in that shape. When i got to work i asked a co-worker to help me tape it up. So then, my window was manually pushed up by two people trying to push it up from the inside and the outside. Then tape was applied to the window to hold it up, but it started to slip down. So the person who was first helping put a piece of cardboard on the inside part of the window, saying that would prevent it from falling down. It worked for awhile, but then the cardboard slipped down into the window. So then, i found two bigger pieces of cardboard to hold it in the closed position and we taped some more. It is now taped up and so far is holding, but as rain may come, it will probably fall again. I called jeep and asked how this could be repaired. They told me it would cost about $400. I don't have a spare $400 to spend on a car that has had a massive number of problems and has cost me thousands of dollars in repairs over the year. Then the next thing that happened was that the front driver-side hubcab disappeared - this is never ending trouble with this car. The car has been a problem from the beginning. I told jeep early on - they would do nothing to help or exchange it for a car without problems. This vehicle is terrible, and the dealership is even worse.

I was pulling out of my driveway and the car just shut completely off and i was stuck in the middle of the road. About 10 mins later, it started back up again and drove normally. This is not safe at all and if i was driving on the road, i could have died. I'm scared to drive this car now and i can't afford to go to a mechanic and pay thousands of dollars. From looking online, this is a recurring problem with this car. There should be a recall on this issue. Someone can really lose their life over this.

The fact that replacement airbag modules are "na" with an unknown timeframe for availability should not be acceptable. If a private citizen was knowingly placing other (driving) citizens in danger, what would be the consequences? Incarceration, restriction, removal of license, overwhelming fine, all of the aforementioned. Most likely. So how is it that a company turning enormous profit is allowed to skate on this issue. Should we accept the pithy "well, safety is our main concern, but we are waiting on replacement parts from a supplier"....I don't think so. Chrysler should be compelled legally to turn their vast profit-driven resources into securing the parts even if they have to factorize themselves and produce them. Or are we (and you) just compliant sheep acceding to the occasional slaughter?

Speedometer quit working, upon slowing down the vehicle stalled and i lost power steering and braking became difficult. I had to pull to the side of the road and restart the vehicle. I had to drive with my foot on the brake and throttle at the same time to prevent stalling. The problem was with the rear speed sensor on the rear differential. This is the 3rd time i have had this problem. Having to drive the vehicle in the manor described has caused the gears to break in the rear differential, which i had to replace and has caused excessive break pad and brake rotor wear. This problem causes a very unsafe condition which should be addressed by the manufacturer.

Since i did not choose to pay $1,000, they made me sign a form indicating i'm aware that the airbags may not deploy in an accident. How is it they can fix it if i fork over $1,000 but not able to as a recall? So now i'm going drive for months until they get a remedy just like the hitch problem. I received a notification of the defect in the occupant restraint control module a couple of years ago and every time that i called the dealer, they advised that they did not have the replacement parts. I called them today and they tell me on 3/25/15 that they now have the parts but cannot repair the vehicle until 8/7/15. Also - i need to have the "trailer hitch" inspected and likely replaced to avoid fuel leakage if there were a rear-end accident. This is completely unacceptable. What is the point of "recalling" vehicles when they cannot be repaired in a timely fashion? So i should just feel glad that i have a reason to sue someone if a family member is terribly injured or dies in a crash in the interim couple of years. Please provide me with an acceptable resolution to this problem. I expect some sort of an answer!

The 2002 jeep liberty we bought for my wife back in 2010 from we thought was a very good honest car dealer will not name this person, but i ended up placing a brand new water pump within days of buying, then a new radio part from the dealer not cheap either, then the hood supports one was bad and the hood fell on my head so i bought 2 more not cheap all the oem- parts, not long after that had new suv tires the type it used, had to buy the book that goes with the jeep from dealer almost $100 just for the book. We still kept the jeep it was paid for, then i placed new brakes pads and turned the front rotors too, bought new chrome lug nuts the tire people messed up several of my lug nuts, had chrome lug nuts placed, then we-started getting these safety recalls in the mail hard for us to do without a way of going, but the drive shaft dropped out while my brother - in- law was test driving it to find out what was making a bad roaring sound from under the jeep, when he turned the jeep around to go back to his shop the drive-shaft dropped out on the ground, i was shocked as well as him too. And my wife what else is going to happen with that jeep.I never heard of so many recalls for one 2002 jeep liberty i have never seen or heard of what is next.? My wife now drives the jeep without the drive shaft that came loose and dropped out. Now it's just a 2 wheel drive jeep not 4x4.I'm very upset with all that has go wrong with this jeep, we've had it almost 5 years and haven't put maybe 10 to 13,000 miles on the jeep during that time, she drives back and to - to work, please help us tell us what to do? If this drive-shaft would have came out while my wife was driving around 55mph it could have either killed or even caused very bad bodily harm to her, in the affected parts will not allow to place the part that you should look at_ front drive_shaft!!) *tr

My daughter was driving when her back window fell down and scared her. She is 16 years old and not very comfortable with driving anyway. She was able to pull to side of the road. Since this time another window has fell down. We just purchased this car for her and am regretting it now. I have read so many complaints about these windows and there has been no recall. I am so surprised!!! We don't have money to throw away!! *tr

I was driving down the highway and i don't really remember the moment before the accident but i lost control of my car and hit the median barricade head on and from there my car kept going across the highway off to the grass area. I was the only one injured and taken to the hospital. My car is ruined and i faced a broken nose, back, knee, knock, head, and shoulder brushing and pain, and now i keep having a short term memory on some occasions. I also get nauseated when k get in a vehicle and get terrified when i'm with someone driving down the street. I have no vehicle at the time, it's been almost two and a half months and i haven't had any help with anything. I am a full time college student working a part time job, my sister or boyfriend have to take me to work and school, it's getting pretty tiring for them to take me everywhere. I work about 15 minutes away from my home and it's difficult for them to take me when they have school and work on those days. The air bags in my jeep did not deploy, it went in for the recall and you can literally see the sensors, the clearly should have deployed. My jeep had no engine or air bag codes of any kind.. So why didn't they go off?! I'm terrier that im going to loose my job and not afford to pay rent or bills. *tr

I received two recall notices from jeep in the fall of 2014 for the defective design for the gas tank location on my jeep liberty. I spoke to the local dealer last fall after getting the second notice. I knew it was a waste of time to contact them after only the first mailed notification, since i knew there wouldn't be parts available. I spoke to the dealer on a visit in the fall after the second mailed notification and the local dealer told me the parts would not be available for quite some time. I left them my name and asked them to contact me if the parts were availabel. In january of 2015, i contacted the local dealer again and they chuckled and told me the parts were not available but they could put me on the growing list they kept at the dealership. So i had not even made it onto the local dealer waiting list yet! To make matters worse, i got a call a week later from a chrysler warranty customer center. I called back after the second call and told them that the dealer had laughed at me just two weeks before when i had asked if the parts were available. In addition to the defective gas tank location, my jeep also has the air bags that can inadvertently inflate (supposedly with a few seconds of warning if you happen to be looking at the dashboard and notice a warning light). I got that recall fixed (a very low cost jumper) last fall. I understand that now my jeep may also have a defective trw airbag inflator. I suspect this was the issue all along but chrysler took the cheapest possible route (a jumper). Lastly, i have submitted a formal complaint on the nhtsa web site concerning my headlights going off by themselves while driving at night. They have done this multiple times and normally come back on within 5 seconds. There are many other complaints for this issue on the nhtsa site and yet there has been no recall for this without warning issue. *js
