NHTSA Mandated Recalls
  • Recall 10194 [USA]: If both rear corners drop, steering would become suddenly very difficult, affecting vehicle control and increasing the risk of a crash.
Vehicle description: passenger vehicles originally sold or currently registered in connecticut, delaware, district of columbia, illinois, indiana, iowa, kansas, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, nebraska, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, virginia, west virgnia, and wisconsin. The rear lower subframe mount plate nut can experience stress corrosion cracking if subjected to long term exposure to road salts. This can result in fracture and loss of the structural integrity of the subframe mount attachment. Detachment of the body mounts at the rear corners of the subframe, which supports the engine and transmission, allows the rear corners of the subframe to drop.
dealers will install subframe rear mount bolts, reinforcement plates, and plate nuts.
note:this recall campaign supercedes recall campaign 93v-106.Owner notification is expected to begin january 18, 1999.Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.Also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

  • Recall 13243 [USA]: Driver control of vehicle speed using the speed control system or the accelerator control system would be diminished increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
Vehicle description: vehicles equipped with 3.8l engines and originally sold or currently registered in the following states: alaska, colorado, iowa, idaho, illinois, indiana, kansas, massachusetts, maine, michigan, minnesota, missouri, montana, north dakota, nebraska, new hampshire, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, south dakota, vermont, wisconsin, and wyoming. Water can accumulate within the speed control cable conduit. If enough water accumulates, it could freeze within a low area of the cable routing when exposed to a long term cold soak at temperatures at least several degrees below freezing.
dealers will add a boot to the speed control cable.
owner notification:owner notification is expected to begin april 7, 1997.Note:owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.Also contract the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-800-424-9393.

  • Recall 22042 [USA]: Severely corroded rotors may fracture or separate nearthe inner edges of the brake discs resulting in reduced braking effectiveness, higher than normal pedal efforts, loud grinding noises, and moderate pulls whenthe brakes are applied. reduced braking effectiveness may increase minimumstopping distances, possibly resulting in an accident.
Front disc brake rotors of the subject vehicles may experience severe corrosion if operated in areas where calcium chloride and sodium chloride are used extensively.
replace front brake rotors with full cast front brake rotors.
system: brakes.Vehicle description: passenger vehicles sold or registered in the following states: ct, il, in, me, ma, mi, nh, nj, ny, oh, pa, ri, vt, and wi.

  • Recall 1997060 [Canada]: Engine
Direct water spray or long term wet driving conditions may cause water to accumulate in the speed control cable conduit. Under cold conditions this water could freeze and prevent the throttle from returning to the closed position when the speed control is disengaged. This could adversely affect driver control and create the potential for a vehicle crash. Correction: moisture will be removed from the cable conduit and a boot will be added to the speed control cable to prevent water entry.

  • Recall 1992039 [Canada]: Brakes
Note: vehicles located in ontario, quebec, new brunswick, nova scotia prince edward island and newfoundland. The composite construction front brake rotors on these vehcies may corrode, weaken and fracture, resulting in a reduction of braking performance. Such a fracture would result in loss of braking at the corresponding front wheel which could in turn result in increased stopping distance and a possible crash. Correction: front brake rotors will be replaced with full cast rotors.

  • Recall 1992166 [Canada]: Structure
On certain vehicles with 3.0 litre and 3.8 litre engines, the body mounts on the rear corners of the subframe which supports the engine and transmission may become detached due to corrosion of the rear lower mount retaining plates, allowing the rear corners of the subframe to drop. Should this occur, steering could become very difficult, thereby adversely affecting vehicle control. Correction: modified lower body mounts and attaching bolts will be installed on affected vehicles.

To ensure accuracy and for your safety, it is recommended to do a free VIN recall check here or here [USA] - UK - Canada.

1991 lincoln continental with 39,800 original owner miles. Head gasket blew. Coolant coming out of exhaust pipes. *nm

NoNoN NoneNone20040720

As i started off from a stop sign on 7/21/04. I heard a loud sound from under my car. I got and looked under the car but could not see anything wrong, since it was dark, so i got back in and started out again but i didn't have any power steering. I reasoned something had broken in the power steering unit. Since i was only two blocks from home i decided to try to limp the car home. I got a flash light and looked under the car. I found the rear of the sub frame had broken away from the body, and was only a couple of inches off the ground. The frame appeared to be held up by the exhaust system. I called the lincoln dealer and was told there was a recall on the subframe of my car but it was only good in 25 states and utah was not included. I talked to two people at ford motor company and said they couldn't do anything for me either. The recall was 98s36. I feel that the fact that my subframe broke loose and i lost my steering should be enough evidence of a safety issue regardless of when or where it occurred. *ak the left mounting bolt pulled through the lower washer. *sc *jb

I had just bought this car from a private owner for my sister to drive to work. Well not even before we got home the main eec iv computer died so the car would not run. Once we figured out it was the main computer and replaced it it ran fine. But we still had two bad front air struts to fix. After all that she finally got to drive it to work and the first day she drove the car she did not even make it home because the transmission just stopped working. So she is out a car and we do not have the money to fix it. Because of all the other cars my poor sister has owned drained us.

Failure: 05-23-03 i was driving on i-475 north in the fartherest left hand lane, when there was a stalling motion. It was so unexpected that it made my 10 year old daughter and myself jump. I managed to slow down in traffic and pull to the right hand emergency lane. When i tried pulling back into traffic to make it to the next exit, the lincoln would not move. Luckily, i had my work cellular telephone and called 911. 911 transferred the call to the sheriff's department, and someone came to try to help. I have only had the vehicle for 3 months. The original owners were in their 70's. Prior to selling the lincoln a motor had been installed. *ak

Steering wheel continued turning left, unassisted, instead of returning to tdc when grip pressure on the steering wheel is relaxed. Examination determined corrosion had created a hole in the left rear corner cowel panel in spit of rust undercoating. Additional rust covered an area of the underbody. Advise that the reason the loss of steering control was attributed to the corrosion damaged left rear corner cowell panel causing the engine to lurch to the left when making a 90 degree left turn.

This is a typical example of ford not covering their customers for a defect they have known about for years. They claim they are covering 1994 and newer vehicles, yet the tsb 98-4-9 specifically states they have been fully aware of the problem from 1988-1994 on these cars. I purchased the car used for $3200, have a loan on it, just spent $990 for the head gasket, $400 to get the plates and title transferred, and now i am told the engine will probably go next, which is common for this car. Ford refuses to speak with me about an agreement. I get the "it's out of warranty" story. Head gaskets are supposed to last 120,000 miles. My vehicle has 72000 at time of head gasket replacement. Shortly after complete transmission, motor mounts, and power steering replaced, the engine head gaskets failed, once again contrbuting to a potential accident. While rturning home from babtsitting my granddaughter i was alarmed by drivers going the opposite way beeping at me. One finally rolled down his window and yelled that i was smoking so badly i was blocking everyones view. I looked back to see a dense cloud of steam covering both lanes of traffic behind me. Cars were at a standstill until the steam dissipated. I pulled over and shut down. Water was pouring out of one of the dual exhaust pipes. A motorist stopped and offered a lift but i was only a few blocks from home. He went on to tell me his sister had the same thing happen to her windstar minivan on a trip to maine and the car was only 45 thousand miles old. He said it was definitely my head gasket, which turned out to be correct. He also said that the ford 3.8 liter engine is a defective disaster especially when used with front wheel drive. With respect to the underdash electrical problem it was a distracting warning chime and oil pressure indicator which would beep without proper cause on an intermittant basis. Oil pressure was indeed okay and the sending unit was replaced to no avail. Only when an entire instrument cluster was replaced did this longstanding distraction go away. My son-in-law in october of '99 took out the original cluster which had the odometer reading of 64740 original miles and replaced it with one from an auto wrecking yard which was possibly from an earlier year car. The replacement module read 131200 miles. In february of 2000 i gave the car to my daugter and son-in-law. The title has been anotated with the new odometer reading as "not the actual mileage". This faulty chime / gauge is also a common defect in these cars i am told. It can be a dangerous thing when it occurs without warning (no pun intended) .

While returning from vacation with 3 occupants, pulled off i-95 at maryland house near aberdeen for coffee. No problems with car for previous 1000 miles of trip. Was negotiating head-in parking spot with cars parked on either side. Brought car to a full stop with my front wheel even with rear wheel of car parked to my left. Went to resume forward motion for the 12 ft. Or so to complete parking and car wouldn't move. Thinking i may have accidentally shifted the lever into neutral, i worked it through forward and reverse gears to no avail. I was stymied since until that time the car had worked flawlessly. Went through gearshift positions again. Again nothing. Engine began hesitating with car making a surging motion. Fearing a stall i made sure gearshift was in neutral and i revved the engine. Something engaged -i can only assume it was the transmission- and the car jerked violently forward about 8 ft. Before i could stop it. Checked lever again and it was in neutral. I, my wife ,and sister-in-law heard something break when the car lurched. A bit embarassed,i showed them "look, it's in neutral!" whereupon my wife said "a few more feet and you might have hit one of those people!" she was referring to some passersby walking on the median which served as the far limit of the parking stall and which people use to walk to the coffee house. The car was flatbedded to hinder lincoln mercury in aberdeen. The diagnosis was transmission, motor mounts, and damage to an axle. I had the car shipped home to long island where my own mechanic replaced both axles, both mounts, and rebuilt the transmission. I am told in all likelihood the bang into gear destroyed an already weak or failing mount and/or axle. M.. .

To:lincoln automotive safety engineers i recently purchased a used 1991 lincoln continental and would like to bring to your attention a safety issue that effects many large individuals that drive automobiles. As an individual with two academic degrees in mechanical engineering, i could not sit by without evaluating the cause of this issue and pass along some helpful suggestions for improvement. It seems that the length of the seatbelt is inadequate to allow engagement, leaving me in a very unsafe position when driving your vehicle. I have owned numerous cars and trucks and have found this to be the case in only two of them. One is my present car, the 1991 lincoln continental, and the other was a 1997 full size dodge ram pickup truck. The basic problem is lack of belt length to wrap around the mid-drift of a large person. It is disturbing to think that even an average sized pregnant woman may have difficulty with this same issue in your vehicle. In my case, the seat is in the full rear position and i have ample room between my mid-drift and the steering wheel (about 2-3 inches). I do consider myself a large man, but i also believe that a seatbelt should be able to perform flawlessly with any type of body style that can comfortably operate your automobile. What is the solution to the problem? Redesign the seatbelts with longer belts. As an engineer, i would say that another 16" would suffice. I hope that these observations may help you make a better product for your customers. A lincoln continental and dodge ram truck are both large vehicles driven by large people, lets make them safe as well. I will also email copies of this letter to your sales and marketing department, and various safety organizations. Hopefully your engineers will find this information useful. I would also appreciate if your engineers could make up a 12-16" seatbelt extension that i could use to engage my restraint system. It would be a fine token of ford's dedication to safety.
