NHTSA Mandated Recalls
  • Recall 10195 [USA]: If both rear corners drop, steering would become suddenly very difficult, affecting vehicle control and increasing the risk of a crash.
Vehicle description: passenger vehicles originally sold or currently registered in connecticut, delaware, district of columbia, illinois, indiana, iowa, kansas, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, nebraska, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, virginia, west virgnia, and wisconsin. The rear lower subframe mount plate nut can experience stress corrosion cracking if subjected to long term exposure to road salts. This can result in fracture and loss of the structural integrity of the subframe mount attachment. Detachment of the body mounts at the rear corners of the subframe, which supports the engine and transmission, allows the rear corners of the subframe to drop.
dealers will install subframe rear mount bolts, reinforcement plates, and plate nuts.
note:this recall campaign supercedes recall campaign 93v-106.Owner notification is expected to begin january 18, 1999.Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.Also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

  • Recall 13244 [USA]: Driver control of vehicle speed using the speed control system or the accelerator control system would be diminished increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
Vehicle description: vehicles equipped with 3.8l engines and originally sold or currently registered in the following states: alaska, colorado, iowa, idaho, illinois, indiana, kansas, massachusetts, maine, michigan, minnesota, missouri, montana, north dakota, nebraska, new hampshire, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, south dakota, vermont, wisconsin, and wyoming. Water can accumulate within the speed control cable conduit. If enough water accumulates, it could freeze within a low area of the cable routing when exposed to a long term cold soak at temperatures at least several degrees below freezing.
dealers will add a boot to the speed control cable.
owner notification:owner notification is expected to begin april 7, 1997.Note:owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.Also contract the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-800-424-9393.

  • Recall 13748 [USA]: This condition can cause smoke or flames from the fan and/or shroud, the fan electrical wiring, or the fan motor resulting in a vehicle fire.
These vehicles are originally sold or currently registered in the following states: alaska, iowa, minnesota, nebraska, north dakota, and south dakota. The vehicles involved are 1992-1994 tempo/topaz vehicles with 3.0l engines; 1994 tempo/topaz with 2.3l engines; 1992-1995 taurus/sable with 3.8l engines; 1994-1995 taurus/sable with 3.0l engines and 1992-1994 lincoln continental vehicles with 3.8l engines. During high winds, heavy, blowing and drifting snow, and low temperatures, the engine cooling fan can become blocked or frozen with snow. The fan motor may not rotate and could overheat.
dealers will install an electrical jumper harness containing an automatic resetting circuit breaker to protect the fan motor low speed circuitry from overheating.
owner notification:owner notification is expected to begin april 15, 1997.Notes:owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.Also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-800-424-9393.

  • Recall 1997060 [Canada]: Engine
Direct water spray or long term wet driving conditions may cause water to accumulate in the speed control cable conduit. Under cold conditions this water could freeze and prevent the throttle from returning to the closed position when the speed control is disengaged. This could adversely affect driver control and create the potential for a vehicle crash. Correction: moisture will be removed from the cable conduit and a boot will be added to the speed control cable to prevent water entry.

  • Recall 1995202 [Canada]: Electrical
Note: 1992-94 tempo/topaz with 3.0 litre engines; 1994-95 taurus/sable (except sho) with 3.0 litre engines; 1992-93 taurus/sable with 3.8 litre engines; 1992-94 lincoln continental. The engine cooling fan may become frozen in place by snow, ice or slush. If this occurs and the cooling fan is activated, either automatically to reduce coolant temperature or when the defroster is turned on, the cooling fan will not rotate and can overheat. This can damage the fan motor, fan, fan wiring and shroud with the potential for smoke or a fire to result. Correction: in some cases, the fuse for the cooling fan circuit will be replaced with a smaller fuse. In other cases, a jumper harness with dedicated circuit protection for the cooling fan will be installed.

  • Recall 1992166 [Canada]: Structure
On certain vehicles with 3.0 litre and 3.8 litre engines, the body mounts on the rear corners of the subframe which supports the engine and transmission may become detached due to corrosion of the rear lower mount retaining plates, allowing the rear corners of the subframe to drop. Should this occur, steering could become very difficult, thereby adversely affecting vehicle control. Correction: modified lower body mounts and attaching bolts will be installed on affected vehicles.

To ensure accuracy and for your safety, it is recommended to do a free VIN recall check here or here [USA] - UK - Canada.

Vehicle broke down while headed south i95 on 12/26/02 in peterburg, virginia. Forced to rent a car while being repaired. Replaced head gaskets and ego sensor and peripheral work needed. Cost: $1,215.89 plus rental (stranded in va) $264.60. Total of $1,480.49. This is not a maintenance item, but a flaw in vehicle which ford-lincoln has acknowledged via a technical service bulletin. I believe later models 1994? Were covered by ford for repair expense. Also my mileage is a 1000 over that for repair reimbursement. But this vehicle repair also should be covered by manufacturer because it is the same flawed 3.8 engine!

Two years ago i had the rear air bags repaired at the dealer at a cost of $1500. At the begining of this year the front air bags started to go. Like the rears the loss of air pressure is sporatic.Sometimes the car lowers itself overnight, other times it happens while the car is in motion. I have also noticed that other early 90's continentals and towncars in my area sag at the front or rear of the car. I am wondering if you have received other reports about the problem. Ford's 3.8l engine has experienced many head gasket failures. My 1992 lincoln continental experienced a failed head gasket problem at 91,830 miles. Ford has extended engine warranties on later continentals. If there is a design flaw which is contributing to these failures, ford should have some responsibility in the repair costs for earlier models in addition to the later models that they are now covering. *ak

The power motors for the trunk and gas cap have never worked properly. The dealer would get it to work after two to three days it would stop again. At the end of 90 days or 3,000 miles they would know longer fix it. I can not find the numbers in the trunk that is surpose to help with getting a keyless entry code. How do i get that? The bad head gasket was discovered by a lincoln dealer before my warranty ran out but the dealer said it was not their responsibility. Probably because a fan motor switch was not workig day of purchase and air suspension shocks stoped working within 3 day of purchase. I had to pay half for the shockes. After all of these things i decided to do some research. The local dealer had done a number of head gasket repairs for models 3.8l v6 for year 89 - 94, considerbly more than any other makes. I checked with two other engine repair shops. Their records also showed more repairs for that motor size in a lincoln than any other motor size. I found out from lincoln motors that they had a recall on 94 model engines because of over heating problems. That was also the last year 3.8l engines were used. I would like to know why only 94s were recalled and not a recall for all 3.8l made between 89-94. Data shows those motors had over heating problems causing bad head gaskets. I would like to be reembursted for the $1100.00 it cost me to repair my motor. Why did lincoln go back to putting v8 engines in their cars in 95? Please forward all replys to my e-mail address.

Message cluster (mc): check dcl warning light activated intermittently. The lc'92 handbook indicated the vehicle was driveable and warning light did not need immediate repair. Shortly thereafter, the gas average consumption/dte group intermittently went out. At 74300, the engine temperature indicator split. A mechanic checked out the engine cooling system. At 74700, the oil pressure gage intermittently went out, but the system check failed to confirm this. The oil dip stick showed full, and there was no leakage around the oil filter. The natural conclusion is that the mc is degenerating and giving false information. However, this could lead to major problems if something really did go wrong. *ak
