• Recall 114927 [USA]: If the shafts separate during vehicle operation, a loss of steering control would result, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  Dorman products, inc. (dorman) is recalling certain model dorman steering shafts, part number 425-359, solutions steering shafts, part number 7-0359, and oe solutions steering shafts, part number 425-359, manufactured april 17, 2014, to september 28, 2015. These aftermarket replacement steering shafts are sold for use in 1995-2002 ford crown victoria, mercury grand marquis, and lincoln town car vehicles. These steering shafts may separate during operation if the integral fastener is loose or missing and if the interfacing vehicle shaft is compressed in length.
  dorman will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering shaft, free of charge. The recall began on october 28, 2015. Owners may contact dorman customer service at 1-800-523-2492, option 5.

• Recall 6341 [USA]: The vehicle weight could exceed the maximum load rating for the tire, increasing the risk of premature tire wear or blowout.
  Vehicle description: certain limousines stretched over 60 inches fail to comply with the requirements of fmvss no. 109, "new pneumatic tires," and no. 110, "tire selection and rims."
  dealers will replace all 5 tires (including the spare tire) with michelin tires (225/70r16 107t reinforced white sidewall) with a sufficiently higher load rating. Owner notification began january 10, 2001. • Recall 8000 [USA]: If this occurs and any portion of the operator's body is under the vehicle, the potential for personal injury exists.
  Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. These vehicles have jacking instructions which, if followed, could cause the vehicle operator to place the jack on a frame weld when attempting to raise a rear wheel. If the vehicle is jacked up with the jack placed on the frame weld and if the vehicle is free to roll (wheels not blocked or chocked), the jack could yield and the vehicle may drop suddenly.

• Recall 8183 [USA]: In the event of a collision, these seat belts may not restrain an occupant increasing the risk of injury.
  Vehicle description: passenger vehicles using aftermarket front passenger side seat belt assemblies that were sold by ford parts departments from january 1, through june 13, 2000. These seat belt assemblies fail to comply with the requirements of fmvss no. 209, "seat belt assemblies." the equipment involved is service stock seat belt assemblies, model nos. H 9977, h 9979, t 9063, and t 9217, built by trw vehicle safety systems, inc. (trw) manufactured from june 1, 1998 through may 21, 2000. Some of these seat belt assemblies may have been installed as service replacement equipment on the vehicles involved in the recall.
  dealers will inspect these vehicles and replace the service seat belt assemblies that were installed in these vehicles from january 1 through june 13, 2000.

  Vehicle description: certain 1996-1999 ford crown victoria police, fleet, natural gas, and 1996-1999 lincoln town car limousine vehicles that were produced with a lower control arm ball joint containing a one piece bearing; and 1990-1996 ford crown victoria police, fleet, and ngv vehicles and 1990-1996 lincoln town car limousine vehicles that have been serviced with either a ball joint containing the one-piece bearing or a front lower control arm containing a ball joint with a one-piece bearing. The one-piece bearing within the lower control arm ball joint can weaken slowly during use and eventually crack. This could result in separation of the ball and cap of the joint, allowing the control arm to drop to the ground.

  Certain limousine vehicles do not comply with the requirements of cmvss 110 - tire selection and rims. The front axle weight could be such that the "normal load" on the vehicle's tires may exceed 88 percent of the tire maximum load rating. Correction: tires will be replaced with ones that have a sufficiently higher load rating.

• Recall 1998251 [Canada]: Suspension
  Note: 1996-99 crown victoria police, fleet and ngv and lincoln town car limousine equipped with a lower control arm ball joint containing a one piece bearing and 1990-96 crown victoria police, fleet and ngv and lincoln town car limousine that were serviced with either a ball joint containing an one piece bearing or a front lower control arm with a one piece bearing. High bearing loads can lead to thinning and eventual cracking of the lower control arm ball joint. This can result in separation of the ball and cap of the joint. Should this occur, the control arm to which the cap is mounted will drop to the ground. Should this occur while the vehicle is moving, reduced steering control could result in a collision. Correction: lower control arm ball joints will be replaced.

• Spark plug ejection from cylinder head investigation as of 20050922

  On september 6, 2005, odi received a petition requesting that the agency investigate allegations of engine spark plug ejection in certain model year 1997 through 2004 ford vehicles with triton v-8 and v-10 engines.Odi received a total of 474 non-duplicative complaints on the subject vehicles where the complainant, or the dealer repairing the vehicle, reported that a spark plug detached from the cylinder and/or ejected from the engine.As of december 8, 2005, odi is not aware of any allegations where the alleged defect resulted in a loss of vehicle control, a crash, an injury, or a fatality in any of the 10,319,810 subject vehicles.In addition, odi is aware of only two incidents where the vehicle stalled without restart.Information contained in the odi consumer complaints and obtained from 72 telephone interviews with complainants showed the following:(1) 99% of the complaints were on my 1997 to 2002 subject vehicles.(2) most the complainants reported hearing a loud pop while driving or upon starting up the vehicle followed by a loud, repetitive clicking or popping sound.(3) many of the complainants reported that the popping sound was accompanied by some loss of vehicle power; however, in 99% of the incidents reported, the vehicle did not stall.In the very few incidents where the vehicle did stall, most vehicles could be restarted.(4) only a small percentage of the complainants cited that they smelled gas or a slight burning smell when the incident occurred.(5) in all but a very few incidents, vehicle damage was limited to the engine.In one incident, the complaint reported that the fuel rail was damaged and replaced after one of the spark plugs ejected from the engine; however, the complainant reported that the damage did not result in any type of fuel leak or fire.In another incident, the only incident where a fire was alleged, the complainant reported that no fluid leak was observed, but that a fire resulted after the spark plug had ejected from the engine and he had restarted the vehicle and driven to another location.None of the complainants reported any damage to the vehicle hood.(6) only two complainants reported that they observed what appeared to be some drops of fuel coming from the cylinder where the spark plug had failed or on the spark plug itself; however, each of these complainants reported that there was no smoke or flames as a result of his incident.As the petitioner noted, and odi¿s analysis showed, it is possible for a spark plug to detach from the engine cylinder threads in the subject vehicles.However, odi¿s analysis of 474 complaints describing such incidents found only a very few alleged any safety-related consequences.None of these showed any evidence of a serious safety consequence.Given the large population and relatively long exposure time of the subject vehicles, the complaint analysis indicates that the risk to motor vehicle safety from the alleged defect is very low.In view of the foregoing, it is unlikely that nhtsa would issue an order for the notification and remedy of the alleged defect at the conclusion of the investigation requested in the petition.Therefore, in view of the need to allocate and prioritize nhtsa¿s limited resources to best accomplish the agency¿s safety mission, the petition is denied.

• Inadvertent side air bag deployment investigation as of 20030314

  Odi has identified 173 complaints alleging inadvertent or non-crash deployment of side air bags on model year (my) 1999-2003 lincoln town cars.Most of the complaints allege that one of the side air bags deployed while driving without any impact.Analysis showed that my 2001 through early my 2003 town cars have much higher complaint and warranty claim rates (138 complaints and 120 warranty claims) than the remaining vehicles (35 complaints and 32 warranty claims).Ford changed its supplier of the side crash sensors for the my 2001 town cars.Ford states that the algorithm in the my 2001 town cars is different from the previous model years design, and that it is designed to provide improved occupant protection in moderate speed side pole impacts.In december 2002 (i.E., early my 2003 vehicle production), the crash sensors were moved from the floor of vehicle to near the base of b-pillars in order to reduce the incidents of inadvertent side air bag deployments.This preliminary evaluation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea03-014) for my 2001-2003 town cars built before december 2002.

  The fars data shows that the risk of fire from impact in all directions in the subject vehicles is the same as all other sedans.The subject vehicles are not over represented with respect to the risk of fire in real-world high-energy crashes.A further discussion of issues related to post crash fires in the subject vehicles is set out in the closing report for sq 01-014 and that report is in the docket for this petition.After reviewing the petition and its supporting materials, as well as information furnished by ford and gm, and information within the agencys possession from previous investigations and other related actions,nhtsa has concluded that futher investigation concerning post-crash fires in the subject vehicles is not likely to lead to a decision that the vehicles contain a safety defect.

I was driving down a public street not even going the speed limit and i came to the stop light my car acted like it didn't wanna go i got it to a parking spot and it burst to a ball of flames i had no previous symptoms and the car was driving fine it had just gotten to halfway mark on my heat gauge. I think it may have been the plastic intake manifold melted maybe? Any ways thought i would report that this is actually a very dangerous thing it almost burnt me alive going down the road and then almost burnt a business down and i'm hoping to get some sort of compensation because no one told me till just now. If i could get some info on who to call at ford that'd be great

The police department was present, but a report was not filed. The contact and a passenger were transported to the hospital by ambulance, treated, and released. The vehicle was towed to an impound lot and later deemed destroyed by the insurance company. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The passenger side airbag is not working properly

The steering in my car is very loose. The car turns at the slightest shift of the steering wheel. It's difficult to control on the interstate.

This is the 2nd town car that has a hole rusted in the fuel tank fill tube it's not showing no recall but i feel it's a fire hazard and afraid to drive

Lincoln town car, 1999, leaking intake manifold due to defective part originally used in manufacture of car that ford was reportedly aware of but has never recalled the cars for replacement of a better part now with metal parts to prevent cracking that occurred in the original all plastic manifold intakes. At one time there was a very under-published lawsuit enabling owners who had already fixed this deficiency a $700+ rebate but the offer was only for a short period of time. Apparently the former owner of my lincoln town car knew nothing about this opportunity and problem was diagnosed 2 years ago. Previous owner thought it was no big deal. Today many ford owners have been left holding the bag for this expensive and sometimes engine damaging repair when they reportedly knew about the defect and continued selling the cars. Coolant constantly leaks out causing possible engine damage as well as risk of overheating if coolant isn't constantly added. Repair is approximately $800-$1000. Many fords have been affected.

Takata recall: steering wheel has smoked before lightly, interior lights have stayed on,steering wheel has done a 360 turn,corrosion on the side panel and panel(chrome) has fallen off. I'm not sure how late a recall time frame is but my car happens to be very old now so i'm wondering if this is the case i have pictures from what the car looked like and up to now also my car is now at 366.'- miles so this may not even be something to be turned in, this state has also done so much damage from the potholes..

We bought the car in 2008 and the manifold had not been changed and we knew nothing of the "settlement" with ford to replace them.. I contacted ford and they told me that agreement ended march 16, 2006.. Now the ford dealer wants $1000 to replace it.. Why should the car owner have to pay an excessive amount when ford is responsible for installing plastic in an engine compartment that gets hot and is bound to crack at some point.. Just a warning .. Don't buy a town car without checking on recalls, bulletins, and settlements...

Interstate, 4 lane rush hour, no where to go and i can't see. Lucky to be alive this is the 4 th time this motor has gone out. 4 times in 18 months. I was driving my daughter to school when i noticed the inside of my car started sparking near the dashboard then a few mins later my wheel locked up i couldn't turn and almost crashed. I put power steering fluid in but that didn't help . Also had someone look at it and they said its a problem with the bearing underneath the hood is also sparking when i start the car. *js

2 occasions where ball joint snapped and vehicle was moving and fell to ground .While my child was inside . Major electrical issues such as: odometer flashes constantly and gas gage wacked out ever since vehicle fell to ground every thing was working properly before and on the first incident is when it started and continues to get worse. Suspension and steering : also since car fell to ground has cause steering and suspension to be almost impossible . I have had several mechanics rip me off and have spent thousands on trying to get vehicle back to the way a lincoln should drive . And still the results are not good. I cant drive on express ways because vehicle is extremely hard to control and stay in lanes .As well on side streets/main roads . It also has a very high tendency to loose control when driving over a small , medium or large bump, div-it or crack in road which could or will eventually result in a crash. By all means i love my 1999 lincoln but certainly does not drive or operate properly like one should .I do also understand that its a 13 year old car and things will go wrong but after do my research and being that i am naive and very uneducated with mechanics on a vehicle i simply let this pass for sometime now to realize these re occurring incidents are not normal and here i am now my results are a damaged car with recall supported and thousands of my hard income to replace parts on car to get back to proper working order . Something should be done or if possible be settled in the middle/halfway which would be fair. I hope i can be a true ford lincoln supporter/buyer for ever and don't want to be disappointed. *tr

The vehicle was taken to dealer who confirmed that the front end and the drivers side ball joints needed to be replaced. In addition, the dealer confirmed that the vin failed to qualify for repairs under nhtsa campaign id number:98v322000 (suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint). The manufacturer was not contacted and the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 275 and the current mileage was 276.

The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 167,000 and the current mileage was 173,000. Updated 11/23/12 *bf the consumer stated the passenger lower ball joint failed as she was traveling, but no accident occurred, the vehicle was then towed to a local repair shop, where it was repaired. In fact, the repair shop replaced the passenger lower control arm as well as the lower ball joint. Approximately eight months after the driver's side lower ball joint failed, as she traveled again. The vehicle was towed to the same repair shop, where they replaced the lower ball joint. Three months later, the passenger lower ball joint failed.

Ford motor company, p.O. Box 1904, dearborn, michigan 48121, chose to not warn a segment of their full-size car owners who are "civilian" that their cars were produced with a plastic intake manifold that was failing and causing enormous coolant problems for their 4.6l v-8 engines and other component engine parts. Because ford did not notify me of their known problems with the intake manifold the defected part caused my car to repeatedly loose coolant and cause my car to overheat and finally blow my intake manifold gasket causing me to replace defective intake manifold (copy of shop bill attached) and causing unknown damages to my engine. I am requesting a refund for these repairs.

On the 2-19-2008 i was going to walmart,when i go to the frontage road and tried to stop the brakes go out. I went thur the stop sign, there were no car coming . 1. I entered the vehicle which had been parked for approximately 90 minutes. I turned the ignition key to start the vehicle and at the moment i turned the key the driver side, seat/window side air bag deployed. The vehicle was not in motion, not in drive gear and was not struck by another vehicle. Also, there had been no warning lights staying on indicating a possible problem with the air bag system. 2. The side air bag struck my left shoulder and upper back. It was painful, but did not injure me. After a few minutes, i started the vehicle and nothing else happened so i drove a short distance to my home without further incident. 3. I took the vehicle to a local lincoln mercury dealer and they determined that four wires in the main warning harness under the driver's seat were damaged, had shorted out and caused the air bag to deploy. The vehicle is a 1999 lincoln town car with 74,000 miles on it. They said all warranties were expired and there were no extended warranties on the vehicle and it is my responsibility to pay for the repairs. Additionally, the warning harness( part # xw1z14a005aa) is no longer made and not in stock and may not be available. The estimate for repair is $3,500.00 parts and labor. If they repaired the wiring harness, i would have to sign a release of liability stating if the repaired air bag system failed to deploy or deployed when it should not because the wiring harness was not replaced the dealer would not be responsible. I contacted the ford customer relationships center and they said they had no history of this problem or recalls of this nature for this vehicle and that repair would by at my expense. *jb

I have a 1999 lincoln town car. The windshield adhesive has failed apparently from having been parked outdoors for 25 days. The windshield has slipped down about one half inch and it is leaking. It is loose enough that it vibrates when the door is closed. I searched for a recall and although there was none for the lincoln windshield, i did see that the ford windstar mini van had a recall for using the incorrect urethane adhesive(campaign id number 00v020000). This was a spontaneous failure of a cast aluminum wheel. Original equipment. It was not heat related, nor was there any kind of impact or collision. The wheel had not suffered any kind of previous damage. The tire is still in perfect condition. The rim exploded after a failure of the floor of the wheel. I have pictures. *nm

Heater core failure. This causes vapor and odor from the engine coolant to leak through the vents and to coat the windshield with an oil-like substance making it impossible to see through the windshield. Heater core was replaced 10/04/04. Went out again 11/24/04. Ford motor company acknowledges that this is a recurring problem in this model vehicle. $737.54 to have heater core replaced. They 'think' they can prevent this from occuring again if they do something else that will cost me an additional $547.00, but 'no guarantee' that it won't happen again and no additional warranty on the heater core.*ak

During every rain water runs down the inside of the firewall on the passenger's side, behind the glove box, soaks the front carpet, and stands as much as 1 1/2" deep in the rear floor. Both carpets were very moldy. I have taken the car to dealers, body shops, and windshield glass experts, and nobody can fix it. If i run a small stream of water from the hose on the lower right corner of the windshield it will show up on the inside of the car within a minute. Car has a problen in the steering box. Took it to a specialist and ford discounted it. They sent a lincoln rep down and he just lied to me about the problem said it was a factory flaw and could not fix , then i took the car into the dealer for a pinging and they said they couldn't hear it (nothing was done)then later on a trip it went haywire sounded like a big diesel truck on the highway and ran like crap , sucking gas also, then changed dealers and they said they coulden't find a ping . I grabed me a mechanic and we took a little ride and before i could get it back it was pinging (took them 3 weeks to fix with me coming up almost daily to test it, and nobody can adjust the head lights on the car that is bad its idiot proof

We purchased two new towncars from germain linc.-merc., naples, fl, in 1999 and 2000 my car's,vin [xxx], 1999 town car, and my wife's 2000 town car, vin [xxx]. My first complaint is regarding my car that developed electronic problems right after it ran out of warranty, and needed a $500 repair. A week later, it developed a leak, and was repaired at $1000. Is this planned obsolescence? This was at 56,000 miles of use. Shouldn't the dealer check basic systems and make sure they are well maintained? My wife's towncar has a far more serious and hazardous history. She, along with our grandsons, experienced a tire blowout at 33,000 miles. After the tire was changed to the spare, she drove to the dealer and was told that both rear tires should be replaced for safety. She agreed. When she picked up the car, all 4 tires (!)had been replaced at the cost of $548. There was no price adjustment for any of the 4 tires removed. On 12-23-02 (3 days later) she reported to the dealer that the brakes were noisy (squeaked). When she got the car, the bill for the brakes was $420. When driving our 2 daughters and 2 grandsons the following day, the brakes did not hold, and she was unable to stop at a red light, nearly hitting the car in front of her. Only by forced pumping with both feet, and swerving into the turn lane, did she avoid a crash. Had cars been coming in that turn lane, any number of people, particularly in our family, could have been killed. Shouldn't the customer "advisor" advise a minor brake-pad replacement rather than wait for a major expensive/dangerous problem? We strongly doubt that we would consider another ford product. As the car neared the end of its warranty, i had several failures. The air conditioning failed at 45000 mi., two coil packs failed under warranty. I was driving the car about a week before the final failure and it just lost all power. I barely got it to pull by holding it in low gear. It would barely move but i got it to a parking lot and left it for about an hour. When i returned it started up and drove just fine. I took it to the lincoln mercury dealer and they could find nothing wrong. About a week later my wife started to drive the car (cold) and almost got run over trying to leave the driveway. I was walking one block up the street and she pulled in and asked me to look at the car. It was running very rough just as before so i told her to take it back home and park it and take the other car. She did this, locked it and left. It had only run about 4 or 5 minutes. As i walked around the block i heard a car alarm going off and as i approached my house i saw the car on fire sitting just outside the garage, luckily i called the fire dept and they came and put it out but it was destroyed. The car was maybe one month out of warranty so i called the dealer, the regional ford rep and a retired ford rep i know. And none of them would talk to me, return phone calls( in the case of the regional ford rep) i called detroit to the executive offices of ford and a lawyer told me it was not their problem and to file a claim with my insurance company. He would not even send someone to inspect it. The insurance company paid off and i tried to get them to investigate to find the problem but i don't know what they did. The fire was obviously electrical but i don't know more. The car was a 1999 lincoln town car so the present recall doesn't cover enough cars. *jb

When it rains the water runs off the windshield on the drivers side, the water goes down to the ground between the kick board and the fenders and properly drains to the ground. When applying brakes on slick surface, right front wheel will lock up and pull the vehicle to the right. This has happened during normal stopping. Also, pedal has to be pushed further down. Since then brakes locked up several times on slick roads/two-lane roads. *ak

Vehicle is equipped with driver and passenger frontal and side airbags, the airbag light comes on indicating a problem with the system which wont protect the occupant in event of a crash or it will deploy unexpectedly, resulting in a crash. Consumer noticed coolant levels were dropping. Dealership indicated that because the levels were dropping at a slow pace it was normal. Three months later, coolant level dropped at a rapid pace. Dealership then indicated that the intake manifold was leaking engine coolant. Consumer indicated that there was a tsb on this issue that indicated that the coolant leaked and sprayed onto the alternator, causing a short. This tsb only applied to police vehicles and limousines because their mileage was higher. Tsb not found in artemis.*ak *mr

Defroster system does not function in adverse weather properly. The positioning of the vents are not directed correctly. So the windows do not get cleared. Dealer is aware of problem, and says its a factory defect. *ak
