• Recall 114928 [USA]: If the shafts separate during vehicle operation, a loss of steering control would result, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  Dorman products, inc. (dorman) is recalling certain model dorman steering shafts, part number 425-359, solutions steering shafts, part number 7-0359, and oe solutions steering shafts, part number 425-359, manufactured april 17, 2014, to september 28, 2015. These aftermarket replacement steering shafts are sold for use in 1995-2002 ford crown victoria, mercury grand marquis, and lincoln town car vehicles. These steering shafts may separate during operation if the integral fastener is loose or missing and if the interfacing vehicle shaft is compressed in length.
  dorman will notify owners, and dealers will replace the steering shaft, free of charge. The recall began on october 28, 2015. Owners may contact dorman customer service at 1-800-523-2492, option 5.

• Recall 2496 [USA]: Loss of visibility while driving increases the risk of a crash.
  Vehicle description: passenger cars, sport utility vehicles, and light and medium duty pickup trucks. A switch located in the plastic cover of the wiper motor gear case could malfunction and overheat, potentially resulting in loss of intermittent wiper function, loss of wiper park function, complete loss of wiper function, or ignition of the plastic cover material. Switch malfunction is most likely to occur when the intermittent setting of the wipers is being used, or when snow or ice obstructs the blades from returning to the "parked" position at the bottom of the windshield. These vehicles were built at the following assembly plants: atlanta plant from 2/11/00 through 7/31/00; chicago plant from 2/14/00 through 8/4/00; kansas city plant from 2/26/00 to 9/4/00; kentucky truck plant from 2/18/00 to 8/31/00; michigan truck plant from 2/23/00 through 8/3/00; norfolk plant from 2/21/00 through 7/27/00; wayne stamping and assembly plant from 2/25/00 through 8/15/00; and wixom plant from 2/15/00 through 8/8/00.

• Recall 8001 [USA]: If this occurs and any portion of the operator's body is under the vehicle, the potential for personal injury exists.
  Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. These vehicles have jacking instructions which, if followed, could cause the vehicle operator to place the jack on a frame weld when attempting to raise a rear wheel. If the vehicle is jacked up with the jack placed on the frame weld and if the vehicle is free to roll (wheels not blocked or chocked), the jack could yield and the vehicle may drop suddenly.

  Vehicle description: passenger vehicles using aftermarket front passenger side seat belt assemblies that were sold by ford parts departments from january 1, through june 13, 2000. These seat belt assemblies fail to comply with the requirements of fmvss no. 209, "seat belt assemblies." the equipment involved is service stock seat belt assemblies, model nos. H 9977, h 9979, t 9063, and t 9217, built by trw vehicle safety systems, inc. (trw) manufactured from june 1, 1998 through may 21, 2000. Some of these seat belt assemblies may have been installed as service replacement equipment on the vehicles involved in the recall.

  Certain vehicles do not comply with the requirements c.M.V.S.S. 209 - seat belt assemblies. The seat belt assemblies may not withstand the force requirements of the standard. In a crash, if the belt buckle fails, there is an increased risk of injury to the occupant. Correction: belt buckle assemblies will be inspected and replaced if necessary.

  Certain limousine vehicles do not comply with the requirements of cmvss 110 - tire selection and rims. The front axle weight could be such that the "normal load" on the vehicle's tires may exceed 88 percent of the tire maximum load rating. Correction: tires will be replaced with ones that have a sufficiently higher load rating.

• Spark plug ejection from cylinder head investigation as of 20050922

  On september 6, 2005, odi received a petition requesting that the agency investigate allegations of engine spark plug ejection in certain model year 1997 through 2004 ford vehicles with triton v-8 and v-10 engines.Odi received a total of 474 non-duplicative complaints on the subject vehicles where the complainant, or the dealer repairing the vehicle, reported that a spark plug detached from the cylinder and/or ejected from the engine.As of december 8, 2005, odi is not aware of any allegations where the alleged defect resulted in a loss of vehicle control, a crash, an injury, or a fatality in any of the 10,319,810 subject vehicles.In addition, odi is aware of only two incidents where the vehicle stalled without restart.Information contained in the odi consumer complaints and obtained from 72 telephone interviews with complainants showed the following:(1) 99% of the complaints were on my 1997 to 2002 subject vehicles.(2) most the complainants reported hearing a loud pop while driving or upon starting up the vehicle followed by a loud, repetitive clicking or popping sound.(3) many of the complainants reported that the popping sound was accompanied by some loss of vehicle power; however, in 99% of the incidents reported, the vehicle did not stall.In the very few incidents where the vehicle did stall, most vehicles could be restarted.(4) only a small percentage of the complainants cited that they smelled gas or a slight burning smell when the incident occurred.(5) in all but a very few incidents, vehicle damage was limited to the engine.In one incident, the complaint reported that the fuel rail was damaged and replaced after one of the spark plugs ejected from the engine; however, the complainant reported that the damage did not result in any type of fuel leak or fire.In another incident, the only incident where a fire was alleged, the complainant reported that no fluid leak was observed, but that a fire resulted after the spark plug had ejected from the engine and he had restarted the vehicle and driven to another location.None of the complainants reported any damage to the vehicle hood.(6) only two complainants reported that they observed what appeared to be some drops of fuel coming from the cylinder where the spark plug had failed or on the spark plug itself; however, each of these complainants reported that there was no smoke or flames as a result of his incident.As the petitioner noted, and odi¿s analysis showed, it is possible for a spark plug to detach from the engine cylinder threads in the subject vehicles.However, odi¿s analysis of 474 complaints describing such incidents found only a very few alleged any safety-related consequences.None of these showed any evidence of a serious safety consequence.Given the large population and relatively long exposure time of the subject vehicles, the complaint analysis indicates that the risk to motor vehicle safety from the alleged defect is very low.In view of the foregoing, it is unlikely that nhtsa would issue an order for the notification and remedy of the alleged defect at the conclusion of the investigation requested in the petition.Therefore, in view of the need to allocate and prioritize nhtsa¿s limited resources to best accomplish the agency¿s safety mission, the petition is denied.

• Inadvertent side air bag deployment investigation as of 20030314

  Odi has identified 173 complaints alleging inadvertent or non-crash deployment of side air bags on model year (my) 1999-2003 lincoln town cars.Most of the complaints allege that one of the side air bags deployed while driving without any impact.Analysis showed that my 2001 through early my 2003 town cars have much higher complaint and warranty claim rates (138 complaints and 120 warranty claims) than the remaining vehicles (35 complaints and 32 warranty claims).Ford changed its supplier of the side crash sensors for the my 2001 town cars.Ford states that the algorithm in the my 2001 town cars is different from the previous model years design, and that it is designed to provide improved occupant protection in moderate speed side pole impacts.In december 2002 (i.E., early my 2003 vehicle production), the crash sensors were moved from the floor of vehicle to near the base of b-pillars in order to reduce the incidents of inadvertent side air bag deployments.This preliminary evaluation has been upgraded to an engineering analysis (ea03-014) for my 2001-2003 town cars built before december 2002.

  The fars data shows that the risk of fire from impact in all directions in the subject vehicles is the same as all other sedans.The subject vehicles are not over represented with respect to the risk of fire in real-world high-energy crashes.A further discussion of issues related to post crash fires in the subject vehicles is set out in the closing report for sq 01-014 and that report is in the docket for this petition.After reviewing the petition and its supporting materials, as well as information furnished by ford and gm, and information within the agencys possession from previous investigations and other related actions,nhtsa has concluded that futher investigation concerning post-crash fires in the subject vehicles is not likely to lead to a decision that the vehicles contain a safety defect.

The steering is extremely loose. The least amount of movement of the steering wheel will jerk you into another lane and it feels like the car is almost like floating out from underneath you. While on the interstate passing semis it feels as if it's going to push me off of the road. It's extremely difficult to keep the car straight on the road without even moving the steering wheel it'll drift to the left or the right. When trying to correct it going into another lane if you just turn the steering wheel just a hair it's almost like you turn the steering wheel 180. Also when attempting to go around a curve you have to barely turn the steering wheel or else it'll run you off the road.

No indication or warning prior to incident. Within 2 mi of driving, battery light came on, electrical issues began (radio/dome lights, etc), then smoke billowing from under hood. Immediately pulled over, turned off ignition, and entire front end was on fire.

Light contol module defective and causes lights to turn off when driving. This happens even when ignition is off, exterior lights flash on and off, draining the battery.. Ford says it is a bad lcm. This is very dangerous

I wasn't aware until recent that there had been a recall on my vehicle on october 28, 2015. I find this information on credit karma and i been having problem with loose steering i never received anything regarding a recall on my car. I would have definitely took it in for repairs. I need to know if the recall still valid because i need the steering fixed. When driving the steering has a lot play and i no that's not the way it supposed to be. Will someone please help me regarding this matter.

Tl* the contact owns a 2000 lincoln town car. The contact stated that while refueling the vehicle, fuel was dripping on the exhaust pipe and dripping under the vehicle. A technician informed the contact that the filler tube was rusted and fractured. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 210,000.

Drivers side seat belt buckle will not click into place any more.

The passenger side air bag deployed by itself while driving approximately 5 mph in a parking lot. I was making a slight turn to the right at the time of deployment. The car did not hit or come in contact with anything and to my knowledge the car has never been in an accident prior. No one was sitting in the passenger seat at the time of air bag deployment.

Bob utter ford auto dealership in sherman, tx tried to sell us a car that the odometer reading didn't match the carfax or its own registration sticker on the windshield. When we returned the vehicle they became verbally confrontational to us. We requested the paperwork they had made us sign to take the vehicle home for an overnight test drive. It had our personal identification information on it that we did not want to leave in their hands. They began stalling tactics and then verbally ordered us off their property. *tr

2000 lincoln town car. When pulling into a parking place, the car kept going forward, over the 4' retaining wall, and into an industrial building approximately 6' away. The car was totaled, and there was damage to the building. Fortunately, the building stopped the car. Part of the damage happened when the tow truck pulled the car out of the building. Driver was only slightly hurt on the lower arms which hit against the steering wheel. *tr

The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the intake manifold assembly was fractured and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The mechanic stated that the intake manifold assembly was fractured and would have to be replaced. The mechanic stated there was a recall for the engine and referred the contact to the manufacturer. The manufacturer advised the contact, that the vin was not included in the recall. The recall was a voluntary manufacturer's recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The intake manifold is plastic and has cracked, leaking fluid all over. Caught it before engine overheated, but loosing fluid. *tr

The driver applied the brakes but the vehicle would not stop and crashed into a tree. The driver of the vehicle sustained bruises. The front passenger sustained a concussion and the rear passenger sustained a broken jaw. The vehicle was towed to an auto shop where it was deemed as destroyed. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.

A puddle appeared under pass.Side of vehicle,took it to dealer ,they found the plastic intake had cracked where the heater hose connects to the intake,was told :"no warranty on plastic intakes ", vehicle is 10 yrs old,2000 lincoln town car,never received any information about a class action lawsuit,replacement cost is $1100.00 from the dealer ,they told me there is a 1 yr warranty on replacement part. *tr

I recently went to a mechanic and was told that my intake manifold on my 2000 lincoln towncar was leaking. He also advised me about a recall about the leaking manifolds but when i contacted lincoln they denied any recalls about it. I have yet not repaired my intake manifold and am still waiting for a response from ford or lincoln from my letters that i have written. *tr

I tried to accelerate to merge onto the freeway. It was dry, but the trac active came on and my 2000 lincoln would not go more than 45mph with the gas pedal mashed to the floorboard. The problem remains. Help. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle's jack collapsed while changing a flat tire. There were no injuries sustained. The dealership was alerted. This was the first time the contact used the jack.

Dt*: the contact stated that the vehicle's gas tank was not protected properly. The contact observed a news report that stated that the gas tank of the same model vehicles would explode during a severe rear impact, and that protective cases were being installed on police vehicle of the same model. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer on 03/26/06 to inquire about installing a protective case for the gas tank. The dealer did not acknowledge the safety repair.

My wiper motor stopped functioning while driving in rain. When i took it to a lincoln dealership in n. Palm beach. The service person mentioned that there was a recall on a wiper motor cover..That was likely to cause complete loss of wiper function. I called ford motor company about this at the request of the dealership and after many calls. 1. To a person called missy 2. To a person called robin #7352 3. To a person called randy in melbourne, fla. After talking to them they mentioned that a person on their "techline" named dursum sent a message to the dealership that they would not take care of the wiper motor repair. (no explanation of why not) upon calling ford mo co , the person randy, tried to get a supervisor, and mentioned that all the supervisors were busy, and would call me back in 24 hr. Upon mentioning that 24 hrs was a long time. Randy tried again. A supervisor at the melbourne office of ford called marisha said that nothing would be done. She also mentioned that i would not be able to get a copy of the reason ford refused to make the repair. I am upset that ford refused to fix a part that was expressly stated in a recall. I am going to have my motor repaired at another service establishment, definitely not fords. I will retain the receipts. I am requesting a reimbursement for this repair, and want to make it noted of fords' response to this situation. The reference # of this to ford is 1363350186 my car is a 2000 town car it looked as though 1,083,00 units were affected by this recall. That's a lot of cars that could cause a lot of damage. *nm

Fire started somewhere in the dash board and the whole car went into flames melting the entire inside of my car. The whole car is now gone something from the inside of the dash went bad and ford should do something about this. *jb

Dt: the check engine light came on while driving. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer five or six times. They performed a diagnostic test that showed some kind of pin hole, but the consumer did not know where this was on the vehicle. The service engine light continued to illuminate. The dealer offered no explanation other the pin hole theory. The light was currently still on, and the consumer just left the vehicle at the dealer again. Consumer said no repairs or corrections have been made. *ak *jb

While pulling into a parking space vehicle commenced to accelerate. Vehicle lurched forward and ran up an embankment. No injuries or property damage to report. Vehicle was towed to a repair shop, and mechanic could not find anything wrong. Consumer will be taking the vehicle to the dealer.*ak..*ak

The windshield wipers went out in the middle of a snow storm. The consumer had to make it home without any wipers. The manufacturer made the repair to the windshield wipers sometime ago and stated there would be no second repair. *jb

While driving the dash board completely illuminated. The vehicle then shut down. Contacted the dealer. Was told it is an electrical problem. Please provide any further information. *nm

Known defect by ford concerning 2000 lincoln town car electrical problem with wiring harness and transmission wiring. This defects creates an environment and condition of hazard and danger to assigned operator of vehicle. Known defect by ford manufacturer is documented by service by service alerts. Ford is negligent in not having a recall as this is a definite safety issue. Car stalls, shakes violently on freeway, falsely activiating abs, traction control, shut off. The vehicle is endangering my life and others. Consumer are putting their life at risk and spending thousands on an issue that can be corrected and prevented by the manufacturer who is aware of the defect.*ak

While after driving for one hour and parking consumer noticed a burning rubber smell coming from under the hood. As a result the engine started smoking. No fire reported. *ak

Parked car evening of 30 may 2004 at about 7:00 p.M. Car bust into flames at approx. 11:10 31 may 2004. Investigators said it was the cruise control module. *ak

2000 lincoln town car signature series...Air conditioner has a musky, wet odor coming from the interior vents. The odor is very bad at times inside the car. Dealer sprayed odor killer in the intake vents under the hood--things seem to get better but came right back in a couple of days. Carpet has never been wet .. I have bad allergies and need to get this matter corrected.. Car has 31000 miles. *ak

When it rains and i am stepping on the brakes while driving my wife's 2000 lincoln town car, the car veers to the right. Ford has not published any technical service bulletins or recalled the brakes, however, the ford hotline advises is mechanics to put on ford premium brakes. I had on motorcraft brakes which are also sold by ford. *ak

While driving at 35 mph the consumer heard a sound. The rear end of the vehicle shimmied. After a thorough inspection and while repairing something else, it was discovered that the trailer arm brackets were cracked. The trailer arm cracking and or breaking had a lot to do with the control of the vehicle. *ak *sc

Jack collapsed when tire was being changed. The jack couldn't hold the weight of the vehicle. There was a recall to replace the jack with a stronger one, but consumer was never notified of it until the jack broke.*ak consumer spoke with three different dealers who agreed the jack should be replaced. One agreed to replaced it if the consumer pays the $50.00 warranty deductible. Consumer think the jack couldn't hold the lincoln but may hold a ford focus. Michelin stated since the tire was driven until flat, it wasn't under warranty. Since they couldn't match the tires, all four were replaced with big o with a 100,000 mile unlimited warranty. Michelin,firestone and possibly lincoln has lost the consumer as a consumer. *ph

The center seat belt could not be latched (buckled) closed. This renders the center seat belt useless and could leave a rear passenger with no safety restraint.*ak

Side air bag failed to deploy on drivers side during a side collision. My car is a lincoln town car 2000 model cartier. I was traveling less than 5 miles an hour when i was broadsided by a pickup truck traveling more than 40 miles per hour. Both vehicles were totaled. I sustained injuries that should not have occurred had the side air deployed properly. I was wearing my seat belt. *nlm

The jack bent, which caused the vehicle to fall to the ground, the jack was not designed to hold that type of vehicle. *jb *tt

Brake failure. First time i was able to stop. My husband next drove the car and could not find any fault with brakes. The car was driven to new orleans with no other problems except it had a tendency to hydroplane during a heavy rain. Several days later he was preparing to make a left turn at an intersection. The brakes failed to hold and he bumped the car ahead which hit another which hit another. No injuries but damage to two of the vehicles. Car was returned to superior lincoln to have the brakes checked and to have rear bumper repaired. They had to replace the rear plastic bumper and stated that they could not find any problems with the brakes. We picked up the car on 8/14/01 and after testing the brakes while driving home everything seemed o.K. That night while driving from a 4th floor parking garage the brakes failed completly and we headon crashed into a concrete block wall. There were 4 people in the car (all had their seat belts fastened) and all sustained bruises and contusions. Fortunatly there were no broken bones but we are still nursing various aches and pains. The 2 people in the rear seat suffered from wiplash and seat belt bruises and sore chests. One thing that worked was the front air bags that saved my wife and i from any further injury.*ak

While traveling at 60 mph consumer turned on cruise control, was getting ready to exit and put on brakes to cut off speed control, vehicle slowed down, and then accelerated back to 60 mph. Took vehicle to dealer, and they said switch was bad that worked with brakes. This switch also knocked out rear brake lights. *ak there was no indication that the brake lights had failed to alert the driver. *yh

Windows will not go up at times or go down at times. Also, radio will intermittently work, and other electrical parts will not work. Also. Has contacted dealer, and dealer statesd that it could be because of computer module. *ak

Nar 03-24-2003 mr. When the consumer hit the brakes, the vehicle veered to the left and the pedal would go down low. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealership on several occasions and because the problem was never fix, the consumer was involved in a collision due to the brakes failing when the consumer needed to come to a stop. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer after the repair were made, but they were unable to find a problem, however on 7/10/02 the consumer wife was unable to stop the vehicle and rear ended a truck and the air bags did not deploy. *jb

Sometimes they stay on for 30 seconds, other times they stay on all night, and drain battery. Lincoln has told consumer that it was a characteristic of vehicle. Trunk light failed to go off when consumer placed clothes in trunk. Consumer maintained that light could have been on whole time, but had no way of knowing that. Consumer proceeded down the road and smelled something burning. Pulled into dealer, go out of vehicle, and noticed smoke coming from under vehicle. Dealer popped up trunk, and fire jumped right in their faces. Dealer reached under trunk and pulled out a bulb. Told consumer that this was the cause of fire. Consumer felt that trunk light was poor designed. *ak ford motor company replaced this vehicle with a 2001 model

After driving for a while parked vehicle. Then, without a warning vehicle caught on fire where the safety service was performed the week before. *ak

Since july 26, 2000, while driving vehicle and hitting any type of bump, vibration comes up through the steering wheel. Pitman arm has played and has movement up and down. Vehicle was taken to the dealership. Dealership stated that this was a known problem. Sunlight causes a reflection of the defrost vents onto the windshield, the images are at eye level and become very distracting as the vehicle moves and causes poor visibility.

Owners manual states all lincoln town cars contain front right and left side air bag, however consumers vehicle is a town car limo and is not included with this feature, manual is not accurate and should be changed appropriately. Yh

Location of the seat belt connection on the vehicle is out of alignment and causes discomfort on consumers hip when driving, dealer stated it was a design error. Nlm

When the vehicle is parked and the engine is shut off the rear doors do not automatically unlock as they should (the child lock feature is not set) the door cannot be opened from the inside or outside. Nlm

The vehicle speed control did not disengage when the brake pedal was depressed. The consumer had to press the off button on the steering column to turn off the speed control. The consumer believes this problem was related to faulty tail light wiring. *nlm *jb

The 2000 lincoln car i own the engine consume excess oil the dealer states a quart of oil used every 900 miles driven is within specification the dealer manual states the oil should be changed every 5000 miles is their a problem with the 4.6 liter engine in this car. *ak

The dealership has refused to honor the recall for the windshield wiper motor 01 v 258 000. They indicated that although the vin number is included the motor part number is not. *ph

The chrome plate on the left front rim chipped, causing the air in the tire to leak. Dealer replaced the left front wheel. *ak no air pressure loss was evident until a sudden loss from 32 psi to 15 psi experienced. The dealer removed the tire and revealed a failed area about 2 1/2 inch long by 1/2 wide. The chrome plate appeared to be a bend failure to the wheel. There was sometimes a loss of 15 psi to 15 minutes sometimes a loss of 15 psi overnight. *scc *jb

The air bag warning light continuously blinked while driving. Dealership performed a diagnostic test which indicated that the failure was the air bag harness. The air bag harness was replaced, but the problem recurred twice.*ak
