• Instrument cluster failure investigation as of 20051110

  The office of defects investigation (odi) opened this investigation based on seven reports indicating that the instrument clusters in model year (my) 2000-2001 mercedes-benz s class vehicles failed in that consumers were unable to read any of the gauges while operating their vehicles at any speed during the day or night.In its 573 report to nhtsa dated february 1, 2006, mercedes-benz usa, llc (mercedes-benz)states that there are three instrument cluster failure modes that would result in undesirable operation.These three failure modes are specific to certain dates of production (see below) for the subject vehicle, and mercedes-benz is recalling those vehicles within those dates.Specific information regarding the failure modes is described in mercedes-benzs report (see nhtsa recall 06v028).Three of the odi complaints submitted to mercedes-benz involve vehicles that were produced before the dates of production of vehicles affected by the three failure modes.Based on review of those three complaints, mercedes-benz was unable to identify a relation of those three to the defects identified in the recalled vehicles.All of the mercedes-benz complaints with vins identified were within the recall population (only 2 vehicle vins were not available to positively identify vehicle build date).The recall population will include 36,911 s class and cl class mercedes-benz vehicles built in the production dates ranging from june 2000 through november 2000, january 2002 through april 2002, and may 2004 through september 2004.These dates of production cover vehicles from the 2000-2002 my and the 2004-2005 my.To correct the condition, mercedes-benz will replace all affected instrument clusters with improved ones that are not subject to the failure modes.Mercedes-benz will begin owner notification during the 1st quarter of 2006.

2001 was when the airmatics first came out mercedes perfected in 2002 there was a recall but i did not get the letter til after the date and mercedes wouldn't honor it i purchased this car and it's broken such a waste the airmatics won't go up it's slammed low we'll need to tow it w the big tow truck because it's too low it'll scratch

2 days after receiving my 2001 s430 from local dealer (critz benz of savannah) for service that was done incorrectly.I notice while driving the burned out odor coming the air vents. I noticed my instrument cluster lighting start to flicker as i was driving but thought nothing of it. The next day however while entering the vehicle i noticed no lights were on the dashboard what so ever, it was taken back to local dealer to be diagnosed. Wanted to let you know that we found your instrument cluster completely shorted out. It seems to be some form of internal electrical fault. Would have to have the instrument cluster replaced. Parts and labor together is $1905.60 to replace it. I ask about the recall on this part they said my car was not included. Vehicle has 188,xxx miles on it. Ive also had both airbags replaced within 3 months and one which experiencing the same issue that i paid them to fix which was and out of place strut or 'another leak' in a practically new airbag can i please have some assistance. --colby pearce critz auto group

Tl* the contact owns a 2001 mercedes-benz s430. While the contact was attempting to open the rear passenger door, the latch pulled out; however, the door remained closed. The vehicle was taken to mercedes-benz of coconut creek (4250 fl-7, coconut creek, fl 33073) where it was diagnosed that the door latch mechanism failed and needed replacement. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 53,000.

The instrument control cluster the pixels slowly fade in and out cant read any thing that going on with car miles or problems with car.

No injuries were sustained. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was deemed destroyed. A fire report was filed. The dealer was not contacted to determine the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 320,000.

As i was driving on june 1,2018 @5:10pm my car caught on fire and heavy smoke i had to pull into the coldest outlet for safety i jump out and called 911 the fire department & police came out the fire out. I am so scared i never ever in my 48 years ever experience anything this horrific. I don't know if i will ever drive again or get in a car.

I drove my work to work which is one kilometer away. After dropping, i parked for 5 minutes. When i tried to start, it won't start. After few minutes, i tried to start and it did. After a few yards, the car stopped in the road. I called the towing company and brought the car to the repair shop. The battery was changed but when they started, they just heard a sound of not going thru. They diagnosed the car and they changed the crank censorcss 825. I drove the car back home.

The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the vehicle was diagnosed that the instrument cluster module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 06v208000 (interior lighting). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the vin was not part of a recall. The approximate failure mileage was 13,000.

Happened twice in one day while traveling at a speed of approximately 50-60 mph. The first time happened as i was driving on a service road traveling at about 50 mph. The second time happened as i was traveling at approximately the 60 mph. Both occasions the front brakes abruptly and completely locked and forcefully pulled the steering to the right. Each event was were in the movement of a lot of traffic, during rush hour. I was unable to accelerate, the brakes resisted slowly pulled the car to a complete stop. While traveling in the right lane i had to cut the vehicle completely off. The vehicles around were forced to stop abruptly and the other cars began honking. I had to turn the car off to reset. I had three minors in the vehicle and was picking up another one of my sons. The second instance was about 30 minutes later while traveling on highway 30, on my way home after picking up my son, so now i have 4 minors in the vehicle. The second time in the middle lane traveling at a speed of 65 mph. Although i was able to make it to the right shoulder and was fortunate to not get into an accident with any other vehicles, and the road conditions were clear, it was at night and extremely dangerous and life threatening for everyone driving around me and invading myself while being on the road. I took it to the dealership the next morning and there inspection suggests that they are unable to duplicate the concern and the mechanic stated "found no relevant faults" to this vehicle.

I was driving the car all of sudden the cluster shut off and i can't see gauges or any lights on the cluster or speed the mileage 99000 it needs new cluster i called the dealer it has a recall on this model but they refuse to repair it under recall.

I was in cruise control on i-95 at 70mph. Had been driving for 1 hour when car suddenly started accelerating. I disengaged cruise and took foot off accelerator with no effect. Rpm/speed continued to accelerate and i slammed on brakes with trivial deceleration. I started to downshift on transmission to bleed speed. In order to avoid colliding with vehicle in front of me at 90mph, i shifted into neutral, slammed on brakes, and swerved off road. The engine redlined (rpm) and i turned off car. Mercedes of ft. Lauderdale later found that the accelerator pedal sensor had failed while driving and defaulted to full throttle mode. Pedal assembly was replaced and car is now operating properly again.

Cannot give the vehicle mileage because you cannot see the miles due to the instrument cluster lights not being on, cannot see the speedometer, gauges or anything else, the instruments are dark both at night and during the day. The car still operates but when you try to see the speedometer, you have to lean forward to see the mileage, which is dangerous because while you are straining to see the mileage, you are not looking at the road, this is a dangerous situation. I found nhtsa recall 060v028 which identifies the problem but mercedes says this was not a recall.

The instrument panel (speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauges, etc) light went completely out. I cannot see how fast i'm going, how hot my engine is running, how much fuel i have left, etc. My make and model of car was known to have defective instrument panel lighting (under mercedes recall campaign 2006080004) but mercedes refuses to honor the recall campaign and wants $2000 to fix this defective instrument panel.

January 30, 2015, i noticed my car sitting on the ground. I started the car, raised the airmatics up, pulled out my driveway, stopped at the stop sign and my car lowered and shut off. I repeat by turning the car back on and raising the car back up. On my way home i received an emergency call stated my cousin was about to be jumped and to come to their bus stop. I asked my family, "where are you?" when i arrived around the corner, my car began lowering while driving, i came over the hill and was shocked that traffic was completely impeded as my car began sliding down the hill. I had less than seconds to respond and swerved towards and open field. Four youth and one adult came in contact with my car. I was shacking, in shock as i thought i hit my own daughter. I called 911, took toxicology test and was charged with four counts of aggravated battery. My insurance said it was an accident and settled all claims with the injured parties. I knew my problem was the brakes or suspension as the police tampered with evidence, planted dirt and lied that there were skid marks when the photos showed none. I had four businesses and loss everything behind this car accident. This story hit national news as the truth was never told to the public. Please, stay on top of this issue pertaining to the suspension problems. I continued requesting for them to fix my car and have receipts to prove it. It was temporarily repaired but nenes completely fixed. If i had known the suspension could result to an accident i would not have purchase this car. I drove my children around in this unsafe car and it hurt others in the process. Please do not allow this to happen to anyone else.

The hvac blower fuse regulator stopped defrosting, heating my car, and cooling the car! This same default was recalled in 2004 for the s430 2001 mercedes benz (nhtsa#04v227000, mb#2004070010). This is extremely dangerous! In the freezing winter; the car wouldn't heat up or defrost. Now, the hvac system won't blow the a/c! Occasionally, it'll come on, but then it dies right out! Please! Please include my vin number in a recall! If this same exact hvac malfunction happened to the s430 2001 years ago......It's still relevant today! Thank you for your attention.

As i travel extensively overseas vehicle has only 31000 miles and has been religiously serviced and garaged. Now i am informed rust has corroded right door and may have spread to other doors calling for replacement of all doors. I am informed this is a problem mercedes has been aware of for some time yet i have never been informed for early remedial action. An obvious manufacturers defect that has been occurring for some time. *tr

Two years ago the instrument cluster just quit while in hevey traffic. No speed no tac no gas no nothing and it could cause accident injury and further damage to the car also. This item was a federal mandate recall and mercedes says not so after 10 years and wont honor the law which stipulates its forever, and dealers insist on a buy of a new one cant even get one at cost.

My car registration was (is) due and i went to a smog station here in san jose, ca. However, the car failed the test as the 'check engine' light would not illuminate upon the key/ignition being turned. The 'check engine' light is not a serviceable bulb, but instead an led wired to the board. Beshoff motors (where i bought the then certified pre-owned vehicle in 2004) advised on august 31, 2013 that a rebuilt unit was available for $1,308 dollars, but never advised me that this car was the subject of a recall as relates to the instrument cluster which i discovered on several online forums. I plan to return to beshoff motors to ask for a replacement cluster on tuesday, september 3rd. This is quite an urgent matter as my registration has expired, the car can not be driven legally, not having a 'check engine' is a serious safety issue and this is my wife's means to get to work. *js

The vehicle will not "shift" out of park. As i researched the problem, i have learned that this is a common problem with this particular model and there is no way to override. The part for repair costs less than $5; it is a small plastic "washer" type piece. If i had been in traffic and this piece went, it could have resulted in a collision because my vehicle is immobile. As the vehicle is being towed, due to the fact the car cannot be placed in "neutral", the rear wheels will not turn to load on tow vehicle. Possibly resulting in further damage to the car. Is driving from work, on the way back home, when the instrument cluster of my 2001 mercedes-benz s430 suddenly turned black. Since it was getting dark, i panicked due to my inability to gauge the speed of my driving, as occasioned by a non-functioning instrument cluster, coupled with the fact that it was already getting dark. This part was actually replaced back in 29 sept 2006, as part of a recall. I was therefore disappointed that despite the recall, the part that they installed in 2006 would suffer the same fate. Clearly, this issue was never resolved through a design change. What made matters worse was that mercedes-benz corporate had refused to work with me to share in the cost of the replacement part. I am surprised since i had spent thousands of dollars in service and repair costs, since reliability is something that is deficient in mercedes-benz products. For this instrument cluster alone, i had to pay $1,572.38 (inclusive of parts, labor, and sales tax). I request assistance in investigating this safety issue as well as getting help in having mercedes-benz defray the cost of this defective part. *tr

The instrument cluster fuse keeps blowing leaving my speedometer, fuel, etc. Completely inoperable. There was a recall issued in november of 2006 and i was told, by both the dealer and mbusa, that it expired in april of this year. I have been in contact with a local mb dealership and mbusa and both have declined to replace the defective unit after several requests. They said they would replace it, but at a cost of $1600. Currently, i can not see how fast i am going, how much gas i have in my car, etc. Because the obvious safety defect (and design defect) has been identified, i feel mbusa should back their product completely. I have 184k miles on the car (which is nothing for a mercedes benz). It has been serviced regularly and maintained very well, so the "defect" is not the result of normal wear and tear. 2001 s439v instrument cluster blew out. *ts the consumer stated the instrument cluster failed twice. The first time the instrument cluster failed, the dealer replaced under warranty, however the second time, the consumer was charged for labor and other costs. The was a problem with the exterior mirror signal lamps; the instrument panel stated the bulbs was out; later there would be no problem, then the problem would return. *jb

The instrument cluster went out while i was driving on the interstate. This left me with no speedometer nor any other instrumentation. Even the turn signal indicators were inoperative. *nm

Consumer requesting reimbursement for 2001 s430 instrument cluster. *ts the consumer didn't receive full reimbursement. The consumer was told he would only receive the amount that mercedes benz would reimburse under their warranty program. The consumer was told had he waited to have the work done after the recall notice was received, it wouldn't have cost anything. *jb

Dt: contact stated the instrument panel malfunctioned. The indicator lights /indicator were not working. Consumer had the instrument panel replaced. When the instrument panel first went out the gauges would not work either. The service dealer stated this was a instrumentation failure. The vehicle was no longer under the manufacturer's warranty, but did have the extended warranty. *ak the replacement cluster failed several months later. *jb phone interview (september 23, 05) update: instrument cluster lights flickered for about 45 minutes before it blackout completely. After that, the consumer couldn't read the gauges and there was no turn signal indication. The consumer said that the dealership told him that there was an error with the manufacturing of the instrument cluster.

Dt: contact states the there was complete brake failure at 23,000 miles. The vehicle was still under warranty. Service dealer stated they couldn't find what is wrong with the brakes. *ak while driving at speeds above 40 mph the vehicle vibrated. On several occasion the vehicle would not stop when the brakes were applied. This resulted in several near accidents. The dealer/manufacturer were notified and concluded that the brake wear was normal wear and tear and that they just needed to be replaced. The center console would not open properly. The stereo's volume goes up and down. The power steering made a groaning noise when the steering wheel was turned in either direction, the power steering hose was tightened. This problem was worse when the vehicle was cold. The glove box would not open. The trunk release button was inoperative. *nm

Tire pressure monitoring system repeatedly malfunctions despite 4 attempted repairs by the dealer. Local dealer and regional representative are not responsive to either fixing the problems or my suggestions.*ak

The windshield was replaced three times, due to the aerodynamics design. *jb

While driving the driver side power seat declined all the way back by itself. The consumer had to release the seat belt and pull up using the steering wheel to continue driving and avoid an accident. *jb *scc

When filling up tank gas pump does not shut off. Consumer feels there's a defect in fuel tank. Cause is unknown. Please provide any further information.*ak

Vehicle will start to shake when traveling at 50 mph and higher. Entire vehicle will shake, not just the steering. Contacted dealer, and dealer replaced the driveshaft, but the problem still occurring. *ak

While driving at 45 mph consumer was involved in a frontal collision. Upon impact, air bags failed to deploy. There was minor injuries to driver. Manufacturer has been notified. Please provide additional information. *ak

When consumer applies brakes vehicle starts knocking from tank area, and there is loud vibration.Dealership is aware of problem. *ak

2001 model, dealer replaced driveshaft at 500 miles because vehicle was vibrating at speeds over 55 mph. It did not remedy situation. Consumer then test drove 2 vehicles of same model, they vibrated as well. Mercedes currently told consumer that this was a characteristic of vehicle.*ak

Consumer of a 2001 s430 v faulty sunroof, led side mirrors, and turn signals. Customer states the vehicle has cost him a lot of money to repair and would like it to be fixed and be repaid in someway. **nar**kb the consumer stated the vehicle has had numerous problems such as persistent tail light and head light assembly failures, engine, fuel, accelerator pedal assembly, alternator, battery, instrument cluster, vacuum door pump, electrical, front suspension failures such as the airmatic shocks, the thrust arms, ball joints and the airmatic pump/relay. The transmission seals leaked, the washer fluid hose had to be replaced, the blower motor harness, fan belt, dimmer switch, trunk springs were all replaced. The plastic trim on the front seat was replaced due to cracking. The front door sill strip cover was replaced. The threshold bellows were coming apart, the side marker light was replaced. *jb

While traveling and without any indications steering wheel would move up and down intermittently. Please provide further information. *ak

Consumer states the passenger side rear view mirror blows leaving the mirror in the downward postion. Unable to see out of mirror. *jb while driving, the seats moved back to the furthest position, the heat control for seats went on, and all the mirrors moved to an upright position to bring the vehicle to halt. *scc
