Complaint Information: Recalls, Investigations, Consumer Complaints, Service Bulletins, Recall Investigations, OBD II Codes
Recall 10209 [USA]: If both rear corners drop, steering would become suddenly very difficult, affecting vehicle control and increasing the risk of a crash.
Vehicle description: passenger vehicles originally sold or currently registered in connecticut, delaware, district of columbia, illinois, indiana, iowa, kansas, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, nebraska, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, virginia, west virgnia, and wisconsin. The rear lower subframe mount plate nut can experience stress corrosion cracking if subjected to long term exposure to road salts. This can result in fracture and loss of the structural integrity of the subframe mount attachment. Detachment of the body mounts at the rear corners of the subframe, which supports the engine and transmission, allows the rear corners of the subframe to drop.
dealers will install subframe rear mount bolts, reinforcement plates, and plate nuts.
note:this recall campaign supercedes recall campaign 93v-106.Owner notification is expected to begin january 18, 1999.Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.Also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).Recall 13249 [USA]: Driver control of vehicle speed using the speed control system or the accelerator control system would be diminished increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
Vehicle description: vehicles equipped with 3.8l engines and originally sold or currently registered in the following states: alaska, colorado, iowa, idaho, illinois, indiana, kansas, massachusetts, maine, michigan, minnesota, missouri, montana, north dakota, nebraska, new hampshire, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, south dakota, vermont, wisconsin, and wyoming. Water can accumulate within the speed control cable conduit. If enough water accumulates, it could freeze within a low area of the cable routing when exposed to a long term cold soak at temperatures at least several degrees below freezing.
dealers will add a boot to the speed control cable.
owner notification:owner notification is expected to begin april 7, 1997.Note:owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.Also contract the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-800-424-9393.Recall 22859 [USA]: Over time, a portion of the bracket can tear away from the strut, falling into and puncturing the tire or causing damage to the wheel, which could result in an accident.
The arc welds on the sway bar bracket, where it attaches to the strut reserve tube, did not fuse properly.
monroe dealers will replace the strut free of charge.
equipment description: aftermarket shock absorbers for 1986 - 1994 ford taurus and mercury sable passenger cars; part 71780, 81780.If the vehicle is presented to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and the remedy is not provided free of charge within a reasonable time or the remedy does not correct the defect, please contact monroe at 1-800-521-6754. Also, contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-800-424-9393.Recall 20443 [USA]: There is a danger of air deprivation, hyperthermia,and/or panic response to a child who has locked himself or herself into thecompartment, with the possibility of asphyxiation.
Children can accidentally lock themselves in the footwell area of the rear-facing third seat, or in the storage compartment in station wagons not equipped with an optional third seat. Once the compartment is closed it cannot be opened from the inside.
replace the self-latching assembly currently used in the rear storage compartment with a latch assembly that can only be closed with a key.
system: structure: storage compartments.Vehicle description: passenger cars (station wagons).Note: ford will have sufficient quantities of the new latch assemblies availableto begin the replacement recall in july, 1992. Until the latch assembly isreplaced, ford recommends owners lock the storage compartment when not in use. Also, ford advises that the latch striker can be removed to disable the currentlatch until revised latch assemblies are available.Recall 22053 [USA]: Severely corroded rotors may fracture or separate nearthe inner edges of the brake discs resulting in reduced braking effectiveness, higher than normal pedal efforts, loud grinding noises, and moderate pulls whenthe brakes are applied. reduced braking effectiveness may increase minimumstopping distances, possibly resulting in an accident.
Front disc brake rotors of the subject vehicles may experience severe corrosion if operated in areas where calcium chloride and sodium chloride are used extensively.
replace front brake rotors with full cast front brake rotors.
system: brakes.Vehicle description: passenger vehicles sold or registered in the following states: ct, il, in, me, ma, mi, nh, nj, ny, oh, pa, ri, vt, and wi.Recall 1998250 [Canada]: Steering
On certain vehicles located in manitoba, ontario, quebec, new brunswick, nova scotia, prince edward island, and newfoundland & labrador, the lower sub frame mount plate nut may corrode and fail due to exposure to road salt. This could result in loss of structural integrity of the subframe mount attachment. Detachment of the body mounts at the rear corners of the sub frame which supports the engine and transmission, allows the rear corners of the sub frame to drop. Should both rear corners drop, steering control would be adversely affected. Correction: dealers will install subframe rear mount bolts, reinforcement plate and plate nuts.Recall 1997060 [Canada]: Engine
Direct water spray or long term wet driving conditions may cause water to accumulate in the speed control cable conduit. Under cold conditions this water could freeze and prevent the throttle from returning to the closed position when the speed control is disengaged. This could adversely affect driver control and create the potential for a vehicle crash. Correction: moisture will be removed from the cable conduit and a boot will be added to the speed control cable to prevent water entry.Recall 1992060 [Canada]: Structure
Note: station wagon vehicles only. Young children left unattended in the vehicle could lock themselves in the footwell area of the rear-facing third seat (or the underfloor storage compartment in station wagons not equipped with the optional third seat). Once the compartment is closed, it cannot be opened from the inside, and there is the danger of air deprivation, excessive body heat and panic response to a child who may have closed himself or herself in the compartment. Correction: a modified latch will be installed which does not have a self-latching feature and allows the compartment cover to be pushed open from the inside.Recall 1992077 [Canada]: Lights and instruments
Note: also includes some medium and heavy trucks. These vehicles may not comply with c.M.V.S.S. 108 - lighting. Daytime running light module may malfunction which can result in daytime running lights that dim, flicker or go off or in some instances may remain on after the ignition is turned off. Correction: daytime running light module will be replaced on affected vehicles.Recall 1992166 [Canada]: Structure
On certain vehicles with 3.0 litre and 3.8 litre engines, the body mounts on the rear corners of the subframe which supports the engine and transmission may become detached due to corrosion of the rear lower mount retaining plates, allowing the rear corners of the subframe to drop. Should this occur, steering could become very difficult, thereby adversely affecting vehicle control. Correction: modified lower body mounts and attaching bolts will be installed on affected vehicles.Recall 1990193 [Canada]: Brakes
The composite construction front brake rotors on these vehicles may corrode, weaken and fracture, resulting in a reduction of braking performance. Such a fracture would result in loss of braking at the corresponding front wheel which could in turn result in increased stopping distance and a possible crash. Correction: front brake rotors will be replaced.

I hit a small pothole and the steering wheel suddenly moved to a one o'clock position while the wheels were pointing straight ahead. My alignment shop inspected the car and found that the cause was a failure of the passenger side sub-frame mounting bolt anchor. The local dealer said my car is not included in the recall (98s36) i demand an answer as why my car is not included. *tr

Northport ford in commack, ny failed to properly perform safety recall 98s36 for the subframe on my 1991 mercury sable. The subframe subsequently broke free causing damage to my motor mounts, transmission and steering components. The vehicle was towed to the closest ford dealer in patchogue ny. Ford agreed to reinstate the recall for the dealer to repair my vehicle. The dealer called ford with the price of the subsequent damage and ford withdrew the offer to repair. They wanted to buy the vehicle back at a price they decided on. I am on disability with a work related accident. I can not afford to be without my vehicle. I can not afford to buy another vehicle at the buyout price ford wants to give me. I feel that this accured due to a safety recall that was not performed properly and ford should deal with that dealership and fix my vehicle at no charge.*ak

Other than the rest of my problems with the above my newest complaint is that i just found out that due to the fact ford installed an aluminim piston where there should have been a steel one which is the only one available now since you discovered your problems. My car is in the shop right now and i'm being told it will cost between $1200.00 - $1500.00 to fix due to ford's poor design. This is not my first sable wagon. The first one had all kinds of a/c problems and i'm getting tired of paying for your mistakes. My a/c is out now, i replace brake pads all the time.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 55 mph on normal road conditions, there was a noticeable delay to disengaged the speed control. The brake pedal had to be pumped several times until the driver regained control over the vehicle's speed. The contact received a recall letter # 97v025000 but misplaced it. The manufacturer was contacted who refused to produce a new letter because the recall was too old. The contact expressed concern because the speed control malfunctioning entailed a serious safety risk.

I have located what appears to be a repetitive severe problemwhere the wire harness is rubbing against a sharp bent metal edge next to the fuse box and after trying to locate parts to repair i observed several burned out taurus and sable vehicles where it appeared to have started at or under the dash. Also a similar year mk 7 burned the same way. Quite unnerving. Also have a second taurus wagon i've had for several years and examined it wiring and same problem chaffed wire harness approximately 3" from fuse box. Also my wires into box loose enough to completely shut down vehicle electrical function, first time happened going 65 on freeway. Also shift lever on column poorly designed till 93 when it appears to have been redesigned to correct problem i had where shifts out of gear because of slop and wear. Previous owner spent fortune replacing trans and it wasn't problem linkage couldn't be properly located because of slop in shift lever due to unusual wear. Otherwise my cars cannot be told from near ne. *ak

This is very serious and dangerous after adding oil to the engine of this vehicle yesterday i made sure the hood was securly latched ( because it has come open on me previously while in motion ) i pulled up on the hood and it would not open. I left the gas station and got on the interstate. While in the fast lane doing approxamatly 70 mph the hood came completely open bent back and smashed the front windshield. I was totaly blinded by it. I was luky to get the car stoped with out getting killed in the process. I would like this checked out to see if it is a default. I would hate to see anyone dye over this type of thing. *ak

Vehicle was on the entrance ramp to a major highway when engine power was suddenly lost. Car was restarted after a ten minute cool down. Drove for another 10 minutes when engine power was lost for a second time. Car was unable to start after the second failure. Root cause of the failure was a corroded ground connect, itentified as c112 (ford #). This connector provides the ground (negative) for major engine and instrumentation components (instrument cluster, integrated control module, power steering module, cooling fan, electronic engine control module, oxygen sensors). The location of this ground connector next to the battery, increases its susceptability to accelerated corrosion. The ground plug is not a water tight design. Severe corrosion of the connector blades were found upon disassembly . Connector should be replaced with a type less susceptable to corrosion. Failures are more likely when the car is operating in hot dry weather and with higher electrical loads.

My engine failed, and had to be replaced, as a result of faulty head gaskets. My ford dealer told me when i brought my car in that ford had installed defective head gaskets in certain models, including mine, in the early 1990s, and that these gaskets failed, causing antifreeze to leak into the oil, which in turn damaged the bearings and destroyed the engine. My ford dealer also told me that ford had a program to help those with 1994 and 1995 cars. I wrote ford to ask it to reimburse me, but ford was rude and entirely unhelpful. Why should it recompense only the owners of the 1994 and 1995 cars, if the older models (1991-1993) also had these defective gaskets? My dealer told me i was amazingly lucky that the engine hadn't failed earlier, and that no accident had occurred. My children and i were almost killed recently when we were doing 70 mph on i-85 and the car just shut off. I had talked with mechanics in germany when it did it to my husband on the autobahn once coming from frankfurt. We were told the car reaches a certain temperature and has an automatic shutoff. The temperature gauge reads normal so why would the car shut down at normal temperature. This is very dangerous especially when it can happen at interstate speeds. I was lucky i was able to control the car to the side with no power steering or brakes and coast to a stop. After 30 minutes of sitting the car will start and go. It will then get to that temperature and shutoff again. After this happened the first time in germany my husband and i never drove the car of the military post because we were afraid of an accident. We recently have come back to the states and have to do a lot of traveling on the interstate, this is when it happened again. I recently saw segment on dateline or one of those shows where this had happened to a ford taurus and evidently the people were killed or injured seriously. What had happened to my sable was the same thing this ford taurus was experiencing. I would appreciate all the help in the matter, as i can't drive far from home because of the seriousness.

Liftgate had chronic difficulty closing securely, beginning at approximately 50,000 miles. Dealer advised me to adjust striker position. Eventually problem worsened until liftgate would not close securely despite striker adjustment. Plastic trim piece covering liftgate still was removed revealing that the sheet metal still (part number 8d74) was fractured around the striker adjustment opening, causing striker to move when liftgate was closed, preventing liftgate from closing around striker. I called dealer to alert them to this defect; dealer stated they knew of no tsbs (technical safety bulletins) addressing this problem; therefore i would be responsible for repair costs. I then called ford-mercury customer service; they stated that my car was out of warranty, and that there were no recalls for this problem; therefore their "final decision" was that the repair costs were my responsibility. (repair costs, as estimated by a body shop, were $315.) i submit that this is not a normal "wear & tear" problem, but a safety defect. My safety concerns: 1/unsecured liftgate allows carbon monoxide from exhaust to enter car while driving, endangering all occupants; 2/unsecured liftgate can bounce open when driving, endgangering occupants of rear-facing seat; 3/unsecured liftgate exposes contents of parked car, and car itself, to theft. I am certain that this is a common problem for this make and model of vehicle. Ford-mercury was quite unresponsive and indifferent about addressing and correcting this safety defect. I appreciate your assistance, and welcome the opportunity to discuss this further with your representatives.

I was very alarmed when my car lost all steering capability. Why would something just brake like that. I had 4 children in the car with me and had to figure out how to get back to my home town which was 45 minutes away. I feel that others are at risk if my car could do that to me with no prior warning. If i would have been on the highway traveling at the speed limit we probably would of been in a major accident. I feel a recall for the rack and pinion needs to be investigated. I ended up spending 895.74 plus an additional 45.00 for towing to fix this car. I have had nothing but problems with it. What a disapointment it was!

When i take the car back to the dealer where it was originally purchased; they say they can find nothing wrong with the transmission. This has been an on-going problem for the past several years (has been in the shop off and on) and we are concerned that it could result in an accident. We are concerned now for the safety of our teenage sons when they drive it as well as ourselves. We also requested a maintance report on the car since we had it, but still have not received it from the dealer. Additionally, they have changed over computer systems several times and have also communicated that service codes have been changed so that they cannot even provide us with an accurate account of each visit and what was specifically done to the car. Any suggestions on additional steps we can take? The car was dropped off again tonight, 3/3/99 because of several incidents last night with it. Thank you.

Consumer stated the brakes were never satisfactory from the date of purchase, consumer complained to the dealer but was always told that the brakes were ok, the brakes were pulsating and there was excessive dust on the wheels, consumer stated the defect was the front rotors, which were eventually replaced, however consumer stated the dealer did not honor the recall before or after the vehicle was purchased, the dealer also cleaned and adjusted the rear brakes.*jb
