  • Recall 13753 [USA]: This condition can cause smoke or flames from the fan and/or shroud, the fan electrical wiring, or the fan motor resulting in a vehicle fire.
These vehicles are originally sold or currently registered in the following states: alaska, iowa, minnesota, nebraska, north dakota, and south dakota. The vehicles involved are 1992-1994 tempo/topaz vehicles with 3.0l engines; 1994 tempo/topaz with 2.3l engines; 1992-1995 taurus/sable with 3.8l engines; 1994-1995 taurus/sable with 3.0l engines and 1992-1994 lincoln continental vehicles with 3.8l engines. During high winds, heavy, blowing and drifting snow, and low temperatures, the engine cooling fan can become blocked or frozen with snow. The fan motor may not rotate and could overheat.
dealers will install an electrical jumper harness containing an automatic resetting circuit breaker to protect the fan motor low speed circuitry from overheating.
owner notification:owner notification is expected to begin april 15, 1997.Notes:owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.Also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-800-424-9393.

  • Recall 22861 [USA]: Over time, a portion of the bracket can tear away from the strut, falling into and puncturing the tire or causing damage to the wheel, which could result in an accident.
The arc welds on the sway bar bracket, where it attaches to the strut reserve tube, did not fuse properly.
monroe dealers will replace the strut free of charge.
equipment description: aftermarket shock absorbers for 1986 - 1994 ford taurus and mercury sable passenger cars; part 71780, 81780.If the vehicle is presented to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and the remedy is not provided free of charge within a reasonable time or the remedy does not correct the defect, please contact monroe at 1-800-521-6754. replace the rear wheel drive abs controller with a front wheel drive abs controller.
system: brakesvehicle description: passenger cars with optional anti-lock brake systems (abs).

  • Recall 1998019 [Canada]: Lights and instruments
The headlights may flash intermittently as a result of the headlight switch circuit breaker opening due to overheating. Extended cycling of the circuit breaker could result in longer and more frequent light outages. Loss of headlights during vehicle operation could potentially affect a driver's ability to navigate the roadway. Correction: dealers will install a headlight switch incorporating a revised design circuit breaker and, if required, a wiring harness connector and wiring will be installed.

  • Recall 1998121 [Canada]: Suspension
Note: vehicles sold or currently registered in ontario, quebec, and the atlantic provinces. The front coil springs may fracture as a result of corrosion in combination with small transverse cracks in the springs. There is a potential for tire deflation from interaction of a broken front coil spring and the tire. This could result in loss of vehicle control and a crash without prior warning. Correction: a spring catcher bracket will be installed which will prevent a fractured spring from contacting a tire.

  • Recall 1998250 [Canada]: Steering
On certain vehicles located in manitoba, ontario, quebec, new brunswick, nova scotia, prince edward island, and newfoundland & labrador, the lower sub frame mount plate nut may corrode and fail due to exposure to road salt. This could result in loss of structural integrity of the subframe mount attachment. Detachment of the body mounts at the rear corners of the sub frame which supports the engine and transmission, allows the rear corners of the sub frame to drop. Should both rear corners drop, steering control would be adversely affected. Correction: dealers will install subframe rear mount bolts, reinforcement plate and plate nuts.

  • Recall 1997060 [Canada]: Engine
Direct water spray or long term wet driving conditions may cause water to accumulate in the speed control cable conduit. Under cold conditions this water could freeze and prevent the throttle from returning to the closed position when the speed control is disengaged. This could adversely affect driver control and create the potential for a vehicle crash. Correction: moisture will be removed from the cable conduit and a boot will be added to the speed control cable to prevent water entry.

  • Recall 1997071 [Canada]: Electrical
Vehicles with 3.8 litre engines that were involved in safety recall 95s22 (95-202) were modified with a maxi-fuse that does not provide the intended level of protection for the engine cooling fan electrical system. Also, because a similar maxi-fuse circuit was used on certain 1994-95 taurus/sable vehicles with 3.8 litre engines, these vehicles will be included in this recall. Correction: a fused wiring harness that provides the required level of protection will be installed on affected vehicles.

  • Recall 1995202 [Canada]: Electrical
Note: 1992-94 tempo/topaz with 3.0 litre engines; 1994-95 taurus/sable (except sho) with 3.0 litre engines; 1992-93 taurus/sable with 3.8 litre engines; 1992-94 lincoln continental. The engine cooling fan may become frozen in place by snow, ice or slush. If this occurs and the cooling fan is activated, either automatically to reduce coolant temperature or when the defroster is turned on, the cooling fan will not rotate and can overheat. This can damage the fan motor, fan, fan wiring and shroud with the potential for smoke or a fire to result. Correction: in some cases, the fuse for the cooling fan circuit will be replaced with a smaller fuse. In other cases, a jumper harness with dedicated circuit protection for the cooling fan will be installed.

  • Recall 1992166 [Canada]: Structure
On certain vehicles with 3.0 litre and 3.8 litre engines, the body mounts on the rear corners of the subframe which supports the engine and transmission may become detached due to corrosion of the rear lower mount retaining plates, allowing the rear corners of the subframe to drop. Should this occur, steering could become very difficult, thereby adversely affecting vehicle control. Correction: modified lower body mounts and attaching bolts will be installed on affected vehicles.

To ensure accuracy and for your safety, it is recommended to do a free VIN recall check here or here [USA] - UK - Canada.

Tl* the contact owns a 1993 mercury sable. The contact stated that the headlights stopped illuminating and could cause a crash. The dealer and manufacturer were notified, but stated that the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 98v009000 (exterior lighting:headlights:switch). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unavailable and the current mileage was 50,000. Updated 05/08/12*lj

I believe this car was included in a recall for faulty bolts holding the engine frame(rear bolts. I purchased the car in october of 2006. In december of 2011 i took it to a ford dealer for a steering problem and they told me they would have to replace the rear bolts and it cost me almost $400 dollars. Just recently i discovered this car had been included in the, i believe 1998 recall notice for replacing the rear bolts because of the danger of them rusting out. My question is: is there the possibility that i can still be covered under any ford/mercury terms, something like a ford motors goodwill program. One bolt was completely rusted and broken and the other just rusted but not yet broken. Should the ford/mercury dealer i brought the car to have known that this was a recalled vehicle and discussed this with me. Mileage at that time was 79,524. *tr

In early january 2008, my mercury sable 3.0 wagon, began to have transmission (ax4s) problems of eradict upshifting and downshifting when accelerating from a stop and climbing a hill. In addition when i checked the fluid level when the motor is hot it appears low in atf fluid, but when the motor has cooled the transmission fluid stick indicates the transmission full at the right level. I have become aware that the ax4s has a history of "inadequate internal lubrication of critical parts and a weak forward clutch piston that cracks and leaks pressure" that leads to complete failure of the transmission. My car is no longer operational due to transmission failure. The estimated cost on average from transmission repair shops in my area is 2200.00. I would like to keep the car and realize now that this particular transmission has numerous complaints of failure and ford is aware of the factory defects built into the transmission. I would like ford to repair my transmission at there expense since they have been aware of these problem for years yet continued to manufacture and install this transmission into there vehicles being sold to the public. *tr

I have a 1993 mercury sable and i have had numerous repairs done to it. My son and i were driving home last sunday from the mall at night and the headgasket blew out. We were driving in the dark with cars behind us and a huge cloud of white smoke blowing out the back end causing me to drive very slowly on the 45 and 55 mile an hour highway . People were forced to drive around me and i had no idea what was happening as i am not a mechanic. I thought my car was on fire and was panicking. I finally found a place to pull over in the 30 degree temps. I went on to find out that this headgasket has blown out in numerous years and models built by ford and they know it is defective yet have only offered recalls and extended warranties on a few years and makes. I believe they should be held responsible for all the vechicles with this defective part. If i hadn't of had some presence of mind we could have very well of caused an accident due to a defective part on my vehicle, not to mention my son being scared to death that we were going to blow up.

Head gasket failure in my mercury 3.8liter v6 engine at about 84,600 miles. My 1993 mercury sable gs wagon (vin = [xxx]) had a sudden head gasket failure on may 23, 2002 at about 84,600 miles. The repair costs came to over $2200. This head gasket failure is a known problem on 1988-1995 ford taurus and mercury sable vehicles with this engine (ford tsb # 98-4-9 and ford service campaign 98m01). I talked to ford customer relations (800-392-3673) twice about my case both times to ford associates in their san diego customer relations office. The first time was on may 30, 2002 (spoke to a lady who gave her name as [xxx]) and the second time was on june 6, 2002 (spoke to a lady who gave her name as [xxx]). They were able to pull up my case on their computer via my home phone number ([xxx]). I was told that ford had a 7year/100,000 mile warranty on this head gasket problem. However, even though my car was under the 100,000 mile requirement (my car has only about 84,600 miles), my car did not meet the 7 year requirement (my car is 9 years old). Due to these reasons i was told that ford will not cover my repair either fully or partially. This is the first ford-manufactured vehicle that i have bought in my life. I bought it new in 1993 and maintained it exceptionally well. I have all the maintenance receipts right from day one in 1993. I expected it to last me till at least 100,000 miles without major problems. The head gasket is a non-maintenance item and it is quite reasonable to expect it to last at least 100,000 miles. This major problem and fords uncooperative attitude towards me have left a very bad taste in my mouth. My only recourse is to never buy a ford-manufactured vehicle again and to tell my friends about my bad experience in dealing with ford. *ak information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.S.C. 552(b)(6). *tr

In 1993 i helped my mother purchase a new mercury sable in racine, wisconsin where she lived. By 2001 my mother was at an age she should not be driving for several reasons. The big event was when she broke her hip and we also learned she was starting to lose her short term memory. In late 2001 we had the 1993 mercury sable with only about 30 to 35,000 miles stored pending deciding if another family could use the car. In early 2002 we had the title transferred to my son and he started to drive the car. He told us within a week there was a terrible noise and we had the car checked at our local ford dealer in lexington illinois. There service manager, danny, told me both front coil springs were broken. I found this very odd because of the low miles on the car and it was not driven much in the winter salt. I had danny save both of the old springs for me because i thought the ford motor company should cover the expense. Both left and right springs were broken in the same area and the original paint was on the springs, indicating to me they had very little if any salt damage. I still have the springs in storage. I also learned later that ford had some sort of recall for front coil springs, but they needed to be repaired by december 2001. Ford did not pay the $340 bill that i paid to replace the springs in early 2002. You might ask, why am i documenting this now. Two reasons, one i just learned of the web site and two, i own a 2000 ford taurus and just received a letter about a problem with the front coil springs. Apparently, ford did not learn from the earlier problem. I learned later how the broken springs could have caused tire failure and a serious accident. Although my mother always had her car serviced at the dealer, they apparently never checked it for the recall item. I feel there needs to be a more accountablity on the part of the manufacturer(ford) to assure all cars are checked. My mothers car was overlooked, primarily because of her age.*ak

Within the first 4000 miles, the engine was replaced because of an oil filter not doing it's job, according to the mechanics at negherbon mercury in oakland. The new engine ran hot. The dealer said it was within the normal range. The brand new engine actually had a cracked head gasket. All the repairs cost me $1800.00 that time. The dealer wouldn't even perform a compression check. Then the car would stall while driving, usually at freeway speeds. Most times it would restart. But this was very scary and dangerous. I brought it to the dealer, they claimed they could not duplicate it. I took it to my neighborhood mechanic who hooked up some machine to the computer. We drove it on a nearby freeway, where of course it stalled. He was able to immediately determine the computer was faulty!!!! The device that basically runs the entire vehicle was shutting off gas flow to the engine. I had my mechanic correct the problem. There was also other defects, such as the steering wheel mounted turn signal stalk was replaced but the replacement did the same thing. Only low wiper speed no high speed, and the variable speed went out. The lightbar in the front of the vehicle all went out. I spoke with other sable owners who said the same thing about the lights. The vehicle spent almost one year at my mechanics. Then within two months of finally getting it back, the torque converter went out. My mechanic said i should replace the transmission at the same time. When he told me it would be $2700.00 i threw in the towel on that car. At that point blue book worth was $3000.00. Why would i want to put in any more money? It is now up on blocks at my father-in-laws. I consider this car a lemon. The dealer was not very helpful at all. In fact they seemed very hostile. *ak

As such, we now must pay $1300 for the head gasket repairs or else dispose of the damaged vehicle at an equally unattractive loss. I'm especially upset because we never received notification from ford or anyone else of this problem when the vehicle still fell within the warranty period. And u.S. I purcahsed a 1993 mecury sable with 60,000 miles in oct 99 in orangeburg south carolina. About 6 months the temperature began to fluxuate and the thermostat was replaced. It seemed to correct the problem for about three month and then the overheating problem started again. In oct 200 the vehilce was using water and then radiator was repplaced at a cost of $475.00. And after the repair the mechanic notified me that the headgskets were blown. I parked the car because i no money to repair it. After going to pomoco mecury and contacting ford they state there is no recall for this engine. How can they seel a defective engine and not own up to it. There are just too many reports and complaints on this piece or crap engine. I still owe $4,000.00 on this car and repairs will run from $1,000 to $2,000 depending on the damage. The car has very low mileage and has been maintained properly. I have been told by several local mechanics that this has been a common occurrence for this car make and year and engine size regardless of mileage, and customers have been referred to contact ford motor company as it appears to be a mechanical defect. I certainly also feel this is a mechanical defect as the car has relatively low mileage. The car faintly smelled of anti-freeze for a week but did not exhibit any leaks or overheating until 1/01/00 when it overheated while exiting a local highway. It was left to cool for a few hours ,assuming it was a thermostat. It was apparent it was more than a thermostat when blue-white smoke appeared from the tailpipe. I would hope that if this has been a chronic problem with this car that something could be done by ford motor company to compensate for the expense to repair as it is a costly job to have done, could not have been avoided, and should not have occurred with a car that is driven just under 6,000 miles per year. Your response is greatly appreciated. I do plan to contact ford motor company in the meantime. Sincerely, tina m. Fasano. *ak

Was charged $1155.18 for repair to gaskets. Had originally purchased 100,000 mile/6 year warranty on vehicle in may 1993 (new vehicle). This is the second mercury sable equipped with a 3.8l v6 that has suffered this failure. The previous car was a 1986 that failed at 68,000 miles and incured about $1200 in repairs. This car was traded in on the 1993 model with all paperwork in the glove box concerning all maintanace and repairs. After the failure on the '93 i checked with various garages in my area and found out this type of problem in the 3.8l v6 is so common that most shops kept the materials to repair this problem in stock. *ak

My 1993 mercury sable stalled on four separate instances in high-speed traffic during hot weather conditions; (1) in aug98 on rt97 in md after a trip of 340 miles in hot weather neighborhood garage replaced o2 sensors. (2) in jun99 car stalled on rt 3 md after trip of approx 50 miles from baltimore city; (3) on 31jul99 car stalled in high speed traffic on rt 17 ny after trip from md. Mercury dealer did computer diagnostics and found no problem. He replaced fuel filter. (4) car stalled again in traffic on 7aug99 on return trip from ny state. After researching your site and others i called the ford cac hotline and reported the problem asking if this is related to the numerously reported problems with sable/taurus tfi ignition modules being mounted closte to the engine and subject to high temperatures. I understand there are class action suits pending on this issue and that nhtsa has investigated the problem. Ford cac had no response and stated that any further costs related to this problem would be borne by me and that there could be no reimbursement for the apparent misdiagnosis performed by the dealership. I wish to make three points: one, this problem has been known for a long time within the ford community, yet a mercury dealer did nothing to repair the problem, did bogus repair, and sent me and my family on a return trip to md in hot weather while apparently knowing that this very serious safety defect could cause an accident; two, this apparently is an ongoing unresolved safety defect that, based on my experience, is a ticking time bomb for owners and their families who are unaware that this may happen to them; three, if ford is in a stone-wall mode because of the suits and refuses a recall then nhtsa should get off the sideline and get in the game. It is disconcerting to me that there is so little information on this issue available from nhtsa.
