Vehicle description: vehicles equipped with 3.8l engines and originally sold or currently registered in the following states: alaska, colorado, iowa, idaho, illinois, indiana, kansas, massachusetts, maine, michigan, minnesota, missouri, montana, north dakota, nebraska, new hampshire, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, south dakota, vermont, wisconsin, and wyoming. Water can accumulate within the speed control cable conduit. If enough water accumulates, it could freeze within a low area of the cable routing when exposed to a long term cold soak at temperatures at least several degrees below freezing.
dealers will add a boot to the speed control cable.
owner notification:owner notification is expected to begin april 7, 1997.Note:owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.Also contract the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-800-424-9393.

  • Recall 13758 [USA]: This condition can cause smoke or flames from the fan and/or shroud, the fan electrical wiring, or the fan motor resulting in a vehicle fire.
These vehicles are originally sold or currently registered in the following states: alaska, iowa, minnesota, nebraska, north dakota, and south dakota. The vehicles involved are 1992-1994 tempo/topaz vehicles with 3.0l engines; 1994 tempo/topaz with 2.3l engines; 1992-1995 taurus/sable with 3.8l engines; 1994-1995 taurus/sable with 3.0l engines and 1992-1994 lincoln continental vehicles with 3.8l engines. During high winds, heavy, blowing and drifting snow, and low temperatures, the engine cooling fan can become blocked or frozen with snow. The fan motor may not rotate and could overheat.
dealers will install an electrical jumper harness containing an automatic resetting circuit breaker to protect the fan motor low speed circuitry from overheating.
owner notification:owner notification is expected to begin april 15, 1997.Notes:owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact ford at 1-800-392-3673.Also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-800-424-9393.

  • Recall 17121 [USA]: This can result in loss of braking ability and an accident.
The retainer clip which holds the master cylinder push rod to the brake pedal arm is missing or not completely installed. The push rod can separate from the brake pedal arm.
dealers will inspect and, if necessary, install the retainer clip.
system: brakes; hydraulic; pedals and linkages.Vehicle description: passenger vehicles.Note: if the vehicle is presented to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and the remedy is not provided free of charge within a reasonable time or the remedy does not correct the defect, please contact ford at 1-800-392-3673. Also, contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-800-424-9393.

  • Recall 2001290 [Canada]: Electrical
Certain taurus and sable vehicles with 3.0 liter and 3.8 liter engines and 1995 model year mustang vehicles with 3.8 liter and 5.0 liter engines. The engine cooling fan motor bearings, can result in increased motor torque and higher than normal motor current with accompanying high motor temperatures. Overheating of the cooling fan motor due to excessive current can result in smoke and odors. This condition can cause smoke or flames from the fan and/or shroud, the fan electrical wiring, or the fan motor resulting in a vehicle fire. Correction: dealers will install an electrical jumper harness containing an automatic resetting circuit breaker to protect the fan motor low speed circuitry from overheating.

  • Recall 1998250 [Canada]: Steering
On certain vehicles located in manitoba, ontario, quebec, new brunswick, nova scotia, prince edward island, and newfoundland & labrador, the lower sub frame mount plate nut may corrode and fail due to exposure to road salt. This could result in loss of structural integrity of the subframe mount attachment. Detachment of the body mounts at the rear corners of the sub frame which supports the engine and transmission, allows the rear corners of the sub frame to drop. Should both rear corners drop, steering control would be adversely affected. Correction: dealers will install subframe rear mount bolts, reinforcement plate and plate nuts.

  • Recall 1997060 [Canada]: Engine
Direct water spray or long term wet driving conditions may cause water to accumulate in the speed control cable conduit. Under cold conditions this water could freeze and prevent the throttle from returning to the closed position when the speed control is disengaged. This could adversely affect driver control and create the potential for a vehicle crash. Correction: moisture will be removed from the cable conduit and a boot will be added to the speed control cable to prevent water entry.

  • Recall 1997071 [Canada]: Electrical
Vehicles with 3.8 litre engines that were involved in safety recall 95s22 (95-202) were modified with a maxi-fuse that does not provide the intended level of protection for the engine cooling fan electrical system. Also, because a similar maxi-fuse circuit was used on certain 1994-95 taurus/sable vehicles with 3.8 litre engines, these vehicles will be included in this recall. Correction: a fused wiring harness that provides the required level of protection will be installed on affected vehicles.

  • Recall 1995202 [Canada]: Electrical
Note: 1992-94 tempo/topaz with 3.0 litre engines; 1994-95 taurus/sable (except sho) with 3.0 litre engines; 1992-93 taurus/sable with 3.8 litre engines; 1992-94 lincoln continental. The engine cooling fan may become frozen in place by snow, ice or slush. If this occurs and the cooling fan is activated, either automatically to reduce coolant temperature or when the defroster is turned on, the cooling fan will not rotate and can overheat. This can damage the fan motor, fan, fan wiring and shroud with the potential for smoke or a fire to result. Correction: in some cases, the fuse for the cooling fan circuit will be replaced with a smaller fuse. In other cases, a jumper harness with dedicated circuit protection for the cooling fan will be installed.

To ensure accuracy and for your safety, it is recommended to do a free VIN recall check here or here [USA] - UK - Canada.

  • Headlight failure investigation as of 19960731

Excessive heat in an improperly manufactured circuit breaker within the headlight switch caused that circuit breaker to open for time periods of varying length to cool off.Opening of the circuit breaker in this manner interrupts electric current flow to the headlights, shutting them off.Headlight outages have ranger from brief flickers (less than one second) to greater than 20 seconds.Over time, the outages grow in length and duration because of heat-induced deterioration of the switch and associated wiring.Recall 98v-009 will apply to approximately 506,000 taurus, sable, mark viii, and continental vehicles produced from 1-dec.-92 through 30-sep-93 at the atlanta, chicago, and wixom assembly plants.87% of my 1992-1995 taurus/sable and 97% of my 1993-1995 mark viii warranty repairs (headlight switch replacement) involved vehicles built during the dec. 92 - oct. 93 build range.

There is a strong gas smell especially on hot days and there seems to be excessive pressure in the gas tank. I have scoured the vehicle for leaks and can not find any. I have replaced both rubber hoses from the filler neck to the tank and even dropped the tank but didn't find any evidence of a leak. The smell is still occurring. When you first park the vehicle after a drive it is real strong and then goes away. *tr

My daughter had just driven all over the state with her student teaching assignment. She was going to teach for the day when she had tire failure. She had just left from her apartment going 10 mph and about one mile from her place. The coil spring broke jabbing into her tire and causing a blow out. We had to have the car towed and the mechanic said these mecuries and ford sables were good for this kind od a problem. When i took my 1995 mercury sable to a mechanic for an oil change, he notified me that both rear springs were broken. He showed it to me and i saw it for myself. Furthermore, one spring had worn a visible groove in the right rear tire. It was dangerous to drive my car further and it must be repaired immediately at a cost of $700. The repair is scheduled for next week and includes rear struts, rear springs and the associated mounting brackets. My mechanic says this is a defect in the steel used for the springs and is a common problem on ford products and they fix a lot of them. *jb

Comments: i have a 1995 mercury sable with 52,000 miles on it. Some years ago, ford issued a letter saying it would make repairs if the head gasket prematurely blew on this car at under 60,000 miles or within 5 years. About two weeks ago, with no warning, my sable blew its head gasket in my garage, after i had turned off the car and gotten out of it. It was just a miracle that i was still in the garage with my husband when it happened. Normally, i would have gone in the house and shut the door. At any rate, i turned around and smoke was billowing from the rear of the car. My husband jumped in the car (i wouldn't have done that) and backed it into our court. I ran for the phone and called 911. My point is, that except for the fluke of my being in the garage at the time, my house could have gone up in smoke! When i called the local ford dealer, they referred me to ford customer service. Josh at customer service told me that the "customer satisfaction program" on this car had expired and that there are no available coverages. He further stated that i had no recourse to anyone else in the company because ford had "empowered" the customer service program to answer all questions of this type. I think that if my house had burned down, ford certainly would have had some liability. The cost to repair the vehicle is $2,000, nearly as much as it's worth. Is there anything you can do to help me with this problem? *nm

Car stalls in warm weather. On one of many stalled occasions i was stopped at a red light and when it turned green the car lunged as if it were moving but stalled and a man in a truck behind me slammed on his brakes but a woman behind him slammed into his truck. They had an accident because my car stalled and stopped short. Also, right rear window wont go down sometimes. The a/c stinks and the heater smells like super hot dried burnt carpeting. There's a gas smells so heavy at times in the back seat i'm scared for my children to be back there. The dash lights get so hot i'm afraid it's going to melt something or start a fire. The car is had to start on certain days. Other days it starts right up. Sometimes the car starts and runs great. Other days it starts but you can feel something isn't right and the car will feel like it's on the verge of stalling but then you can hear it start back up again. Almost like the ignition is turning on and off. I have a list of all the repairs done to my car just after i purchased it and there is some major bills in this pile! Reading that other people are having the same exact problems with their sables is proof that ford put out an unsafe car! I haven't got the money to buy another car. My complaint relates to ford and its handling of the problems associated with the 3.8 engine. When notified of the recall because of the gasket problem i took my 1995 sable to a ford dealer for correction. The car is not used too much, and consequently the time extension(to 7 years) ran out, but with only 28,000 miles on the new gaskets (72,000 miles total on the vehicle), they failed last month. Ford has no interest in providing any relief. Mileage to them is irrelevant, only the time. Pretty lousy approach to fixing an engineering design flaw. Purchases of ford products are a thing of the past. Just had to enter a formal complaint and get it off my chest. If you can use me as any kind of a witness against them give a call. *ak

When we purchased the car, it had 120,673 miles. About 3 months after we bought it, we started experiencing problems with the car overheating. The temp indicator would rise to hot, stay there for about a minute or more and then go back to normal. We put in a new thermostat, but occasionally the car would overheat. By the time we pulled over to stop the car, the temp gauge would return to normal. This has continued, intermittently, until last thursday. While driving home from work, the temp gauge rose to hot, the engine started to mis-fire and i saw blue smoke coming out the back. I managed to get the car home, but it never started again. When we checked the oil, it was up a quart. (my guess is anti-freeze in the crankcase.) looks like a blown head gasket. I have since heard rumors that it may be a common problem for that engine.

Speedometer failed at 67500, needle fluctuates wildly and unusable as an indicator. Research of your database indicates unusally large number of identical complaints. Ford issued an advisory to dealers (article 97-12-5) on 6/9/97 regarding the defective speedometer. Request nhtsa initiate an investigation and seek a recall due to the defect of the same item affecting a large group of vehicles relating to motor vehicle safety. Your database indicates that the majority of owners have had multiple speedometer failures and ford is unwilling to take responsibility for installing what may be inferior components and thereby creating additional unreasonable safety risks. There appears to be conclusive evidence that there is a defect affecting a large number of sable/taurus vehicles and ford is aware of it. Perhaps ford may be receptive to entertain a request for a recall before this defect the becomes magnitude of an explorer roll-over type issue. Please help!*ak

My first speedometer needle started swing between 45 and 85 at constant real speed, whenever i drove around 60 mph real speed. At that time my car had 29,000 miles in aug 1997. I changed my speedometer from ford dealer under ford warranty. I had exactly the same problems at 46,000 miles in nov 1998 with my second speedometer. I changed speedometer again from ford dealer. I have exactly the same problem at 61,000 miles in jun 2000 with my third speedometer. I think 95 sable has serious problem with their speedometer. It is really dangerous, since i cannot figure out my speed, if i run faster than 50 miles. I'm having exactly the same speedometer problems approx every one and half years (about 16,000 miles) after the first speedometer. Ford dealer asked $ 600 to install another new speedometer, since the part warranty is one year. I really don't want to drive without knowing my speed on highways. Then i have to spend $600 every one and half years to maintain speedometer. I think ford should do something for my speedometer, since speedometer is one of the most important instrument on highways. *ak

I had been noticing a strange burning smell in the car for some time - but couldn't place its source. I found the smell getting stronger over time, and stronger when the headlights were on. Then i noticed that the dash area surrounding the headlight switch was warm to the touch. I pulled off the headlight switch knob, and the switch shaft was burning - too hot to touch. I obtained a new headlight switch and proceeded to dissaemble the dash. I found the back end (plastic connector receptable body) of the switch totally melted, and some of the wires had their insulation melted clear off, down to bare copper. Luckily none of the wires were touching in the bare areas. The male end of the harness (that plugs into the switch) was melted into the switch body. I had to buy a new replacement connector, splice it in and make up some new wires, and then install the new switch. The auto parts stores say that although ford doesn't have the connector + pigtail assembly available as a dealer item, it is an aftermarket item since "they burn up so often." had i not intervened when i did, i could have had a severe in-dash fire, plus lost my lights at night. My lights never stopped working, although the burning smell was evident. Mercury customer assistance advised no prior reports of this type.*ak

I bought my 1995 sable in july 97 with 30,000 miles and a ford extended warranty. At 31,667 miles the speedometer dial would buzz and the needle swing back and forth, not reading proper speed. I contacted a ford dealer, columbia ford in columbia, ct and they replaced the speedometer head in dash, stating that ford knows that the speedometer heads last about 30,000 miles then they defect. They also told me that ford sent out a tsb on the speedo heads and that nhtsa also had reports on the defect. Now at 64,000 miles the speedo head again defected, buzzing and reading improper speed, very frightning. I contacted ford about the issue and after a week of trying to get them on the phone i finally did. The service rep at ford customer service i talked to, dorthia at extension 2703, said in so many words that i am up the creek. I then asked to talk to her supervisor, nichol kings, she would not let me, put me on hold, then came back and now after i tried to resolve the matter she said in a firm voice, "the matter is now closed". Ford flat out refused to stand behind their product, knowing well that the defect was a safety issue. Ths cost of replacing the speedo head is about $500. I cannot afford to replace the speedo every 30,000 miles, and it is a very serious safety issue since my wife uses the car also. I believe it is very pathetic that a consumer has to be shafted like this buying a car in good faith, then being told too bad for you. Ford knew about this safety defect all along. Please help before i or someone in my family gets killed being unable to read their proper speed. Thank you for your time. *ak

We purchased this vehicle as a used car. At the time of purchase the dealership did not inform us of the potential problem with a head gasket. I learned of this problem after the fact. When the car was diagnosed with this problem by our mechanic, i contacted the dealership and the salesman immediately stated that ford had made a provision for years 94, 95, and 96 regarding the head gasket. He imformed me that there was a defect in the gasket of this make and model car. He suggested i contact the local ford/mercury to see if this provision was still in effect. I did contact the dealership and they refered me to fords customer service. I spoke with two people at ford. Both stated that they had sent a letter extending the waranty to 5yrs/60000 for the head gasket defect and since my car was beyond 60000 mi that i was not eligible for financial assistance. Although this problem did not cause an accident, i was forced to drive without heat for over 50 miles. To me this is dangerous especially since it was one of the coldest days of the winter. Also just the cost alone to fix this problem was sizable and has hurt us financially. Not to mention that we still owe $9000 on the car! Ford co. Was very rude to me regarding this problem and when i asked to speak to the supervisors' supervisor she told me that her boss did not take customer calls. What kind of customer service is that? This problem had only occurred previously when idling at traffic lights, etc. This was the first time it happened going down the highway. We were traveling down a two lane highway at 60 mph when suddenly the engine stalled. We managed to get it off the side of the road. When the car stalls, the power brakes and power steering quits also. It was 104 degrees outside and spending 1-1/2 hours on the side of the road with a four year old without anything to drink was horrible, she could have dehydrated very easily. The manufacturer knows about the problem, sent out technical service bulletins (tsbr #96-7-5) about it, i guess it is going to take having people killed before they do something about it. The following is a list of automobiles that are involved: 89-95 ford taurus, 89-94 lincoln continental, and 89-95 mercury sable. Speedometer needle reacts normally up to 35-45 mph. After that, the needle bounces between 40-85 mph at any speed above 35mph. A slight noise, similar to an electric rattle can be heard during malfunc- tion. Completed 1500 mile trip and was able to judge speed by using tachometer. Dealer recommends replacing speedometer head and drive cable ($400). Have spoken with others who have had similar problem fixed and problem returns within 10-20k miles.

Since i have purcahsed the car (it was the showcase car) every summer as the weather gets hot the car without any warning will cut off. I took it back to the dealer and on several ocassions (two of which they keep the car for a week) they could not find the problem so, they were unable to help me and the problem continued. I don't know if it"s related to the air condition or this gasket problem that i just became aware of from another car dealer. All i know is theat that it happens when the outside environment is fairly warm . It happens without warning and lucily i am a city driver and have not had an accident or been killed on the highway. I would like to keep the car if it can be repaired. Otherwise i have to get rid of it. All i have been told is that it can"t be fixed unless it can be duplicated at the shop and to come back next time it happens, but the problem with that is once the car stops it may start right up again in 10 mins. Or one hour.Nr

Nhtsa campaign #97v019000 may apply although the radiator fan motor in our car failed in warm weather here in tucson, az!!! The fan "froze up" and stopped working. This resulted in enormous smoke coming out from the engine under the hood of the car. We immediately turned off the car and had it towed to our local repair shop where they replaced the radiator fan motor. I would like to be contacted by someone to discuss this incident and how i might have some success in billing ford/lincoln/mercury for the costs of repair.

The original speedometer failed at 27719 miles. The replacement speedometer now has 28333 miles. On 03 november i requested a speedometer be put on my auto. I was not requesting that this work be done under the warranty. I was told that ford motor co has a hold on all orders for speedometers for ford tarus and merkery sable. The service manager related that there is a problem with these speedometers and ford was assessing the problem and a desision would be made shortly as to the method of correcting the problem. The dealer took my name, phone number and added it to an already long list of vehicles with the same problem. Appairently there are a large number of these vehicles operating on the highway with non- working speedomenters.

Original speedometer started "bouncing" after 19100 miles, i.E. The speed indicator would swing wildly back and forth between 40 and 80 or so, accompanied by a buzzing sound. This occurred at speeds over 45-50 mph. Speedometer was replaced at no charge by dealer. The replacement speedometer functioned properly until the warranty-period ended, then with appx. 25000 miles on the replacement speedometer, it started acting the same way. A letter of complaint directed to ford/lincoln/mercury resulted in a call saying the dealer would contact us. They never did. The speedometer is still "bouncing" being unreliable and noisy when driving over 45-50 mph. *ak
