• Recall 4827 [USA]: Depending on the location of the fracture, a broken spring could move past the spring seat and contact a front tire. some tires have deflated due to contact with a broken spring.

  Certain passenger vehicles equipped with front coil springs.The front coil springs were produced with poor paint quality which, after continued exposure to corrosive salt, can result in breakage of the spring. Depending on the location of the fracture, a broken spring could move past the spring seat and contact a front tire. Some tires have deflated due to contact with a broken spring. Correction: dealers will notify customers to bring their vehicle to an authorize dealership to have a spring guard installed on both front struts to prevent tire puncture and replace any broken springs free of charge.

  On certain vehicles, the front tow hook may contact curbing, dips, speedbumps, potholes etc. And cause inadvertent air bag deployment. Correction: front tow hooks will be removed on affected vehicles.

• Electrical system investigation as of 19991101

  Odi has received 5,820 complaints concerning a variety of electrical system failures that result in the vehicle stalling.Our complaint analysis indicates that the majority of these compaints are caused by alternator failure.In some instances, the vehicle is completely dead and will not restart.Based on our investigation and the manufacturers respomse, odi is closing this investigation because the manufacturer has agreed to perform the owner nortification program cited above, including quarterly notifications to odi.This program allows owners to get their alternator replaced for free.Further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists.Odi will continue to monitor this matter closely, and the agency reserves the right to take further action on these models if warranted by the circumstances.

• Oversensitive air bag deployment investigation as of 19970430

  In its letter dated december 21, 1998, subaru stated that the vehicles identified above will be recalled.Subaru dealers will remove the front towing/tie-down hooks.Refer to nhtsa recall no. 98v-315 for details.

Tl* the contact owns a 1995 subaru legacy. The contact noticed an abnormal noise coming from the front driver side of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the coil spring was fractured and gouged the tire down past the steel belt. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and did not call the contact back. The contact was unaware if the vehicle was repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 01v216000 (suspension). The approximate failure mileage was 190,000.

10/162017 - i was walking down the street to meet my wife for dinner after parking my car. As i watched her pull into the parking lot in front of me in the legacy i saw the windshield get blown out by the passenger airbag being deployed. She was stopped waiting for traffic on a city street to clear to pull in and was not moving very fast at all, approx 5 mph. Luckily no one was in the passenger seat and my wife sustained minor injuries from flying glass. After inspecting the vehicle the following day our mechanic said he believed that the airbag recall # 96v315000 performed on 12/11/1998 apparently was not performed properly and he suspected that the poorly removed tow-hook was not cut off short enough (not to the recall spec) to prevent accidental inflation of the airbag. I believe that the remaining stub of the tow-hook may have impacted the driveway as she pulled in deploying the airbag, we contacted subaru and they basically said it was not their problem. See attached pictures from our mechanic and email correspondences from subaru.

The brake and gas pedals on automatic transmission subaru legacy models are so close together that a man of average shoe size, wearing boots of any kind, is liable to inadvertently apply pressure to both pedals at the same time. The "fix" is simple: subaru of america should hang the manual transmission brake pedal, with its smaller pad footprint, on all automatic transmission legacy models. Problem solved. While driving my vehicle, and if wearing boots, i must maintain constant vigilance to avoid the potentially lethal consequence of applying pressure to both pedals at the same time. *tr

The left rear strut tower on the car rotted almost completely off . This happened without warning as the car was inspected. Out that almost all of the rear crossmember was rotted away on the left rear side and the right rear side has a couple of rot holes in it getting ready to do the same thing the left side did. If the left strut tower had completely broke off the tire would have gone right into the rotted wheel well probably causing the tire to blow because i'm sure it would have been sliced open from the jagged rusted metal which would have caused the car body on the left side to drop and start to scrap on the pavement. If your not familiar with a subaru the gas tank is located just in front of the rear tires and it just about pokes into the wheel well area. In my calculations the gas tank would have been scrapping the pavement and it was full by the way. I have emailed subaru about this problem. They did a vin# check and told me there is no recall for my stated problem and that they were not going to do anything about the car. *tr

We had a slow oil leak and our catalytic converter started going bad at the same time. The oil leaked down the exhaust to the catalytic converter which was over heating and caused a flash fire burning up my entire car. Thankfully no one was hurt. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 1995 subaru legacy. The contact stated that the brake pedal froze and was resistant to engagement. The failure caused the contact to crash into the rear of another vehicle. The contact stated that the air bags did not deploy upon impact. The vehicle was towed to the contact place of residence and was not inspected for the failure or repaired. The failure and current mileage was 174,278.

Vehicle is a 1995 subaru legacy l wagon with auto. Trans. Gas pedal and brake pedal are too close together, and at the same height. One's foot can inadvertently apply both pedals at once, causing acceleration and braking simultaneously. Also, clearance between pedals and lower dash panel just above, is minimal. This can cause foot (especially in a winter boot) to jam in the limited space, resulting in difficulty lifting foot from a pedal. In an otherwise praiseworthy car, these flaws are an accident waiting to happen. *tr

Car shakes and steering wheel vibrates when applying brakes. Gives sensation of inability to brake. Feeling of insecurity. Have taken to dealer on several occasions and the following have been done: resurfaced front and back rotors at 17,002 miles. Replaced front and rear pads and front rotors and resurfaced rear rotors at 29,154 replaced rear rotors and resurfaced front rotors at 42,325. Now at about 53,000, front rotors need replacing again! A quick internet search found one reported failure of abs in 2005 legacy that potentially could have caused an accident. I am concerned and worried that this car could prove unsafe for my family if our brakes fail. *tr

Seat belt webbing started disintegrating in last 6 months. I have short video clip showing the defect that i can forward. *tr

The mechanic stated that both front coil springs were fractured and would have to be replaced. There was a recall under nhtsa campaign id number 01v216000 (suspension:front:springs:coil springs), that may be related to the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the vin was not included in the recall. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 166,116. Updated 02/09/12*lj the consumer stated the rear coil springs failed in a manner similar to the failure of the front coil springs. The defect relates to an existing recall campaign regarding the front coil springs. Updatd 02/13/12

Fuel tank filler neck leak and failure. *tr

Leaking fuel filler neck, lines and tank on older subaru's. Owned 2 subarus a 1993 impreza and a 1995 legacy both gas tank seams get rusted out due to climatic conditions and leak same as filler necks and lines. Causes emission problems, triggers check engine light on obd2 cars. *jb

Dt: the contact detected a strong odor of gasoline in the garage. The contact inspected the generator and his wife's vehicle in which nothing was found. When the contact placed vehicle back into the garage he noticed a gasoline stain where vehicle was parked. He took the vehicle to a subaru dealer, who noticed the leak immediately which was coming from the filler neck of the gasoline storage tank assembly on the inside of the vehicle from where gasoline gas pump nozzle goes into the gas tank itself. This was considered a common problem because it was plastic and breaking down. The part was on back order at four separate subaru dealers, the filler neck part number was 42066fa030. Out of fear of an ignition source, such as an explosion and death the vehicle was parked outside of the garage. The contact added this was the same part that was used in the 1995-1997 subaru legacy vehicles. The contact owns a 1995 subaru legacy wagon. *ak

Fax pertaining to consumer's difficulty in obtain a part for the defective gasoline tank filler neck of his 1995 subaru legacy wagon. *ts the faulty filler neck caused fuel to leak from the vehicle. *nm

I was driving home on i-90 at 65 miles per hour when the hood of my 1995 legacy subaru wagon flew up and broke the windshield and caused the rear view mirror to fly off into the car. The latch and the safety latch failed without warning. This happened last week and i have done nothing to repair the car. *jb

Approximately one month ago i was driving on a local highway when i noticed that my hood was partially unlatched (held by safety). I exited the highway, closed the hood and made a service appointment. *ak the dealer could not find anything wrong with the latch, but recommended replacement. Another service tech at the dealership relayed that he also had a hood latch failure on a 1995 subaru legacy wagon. Plan to replace hood mechanism.

Consumer stated alternator failed. As a result, tail lights became inoperable. *ak

My vehicle, a 1995 subaru legacy l station wagon, had stalled at a red light. Shortly after the light turned green, i was rear-ended by another vehicle. I was in the driver's seat of my vehicle. Upon impact, the driver's seat "collapsed" to a fully-reclined position. I suffered muscle and ligament strain in my neck and back, and my daughter (who was seated behind me) sustained a large bruise on her right thigh as a result of being struck by my seat when it collapsed. *jb

When brakes are applied/tapped they suddenly tighten and get hot as time progresses. This makes it difficult to continue operating the vehicle. This failure resulted in a fire due to master brake cylinder failure. Brake pads and calipers were replaced, but the failure recurred. *ak

When driving at any speed without any prior warning vehicle will stall. *ak

The vehicle was involved in a frontal collision, and the air bags deployed in the windshield. *jb

Driveability concern: there is a valve guide movement on the cylinders that lead to very heavy carbon deposits on valves and intake/combustion chambers. The valve guide wear occurs because the heads are made of aluminum. Under load, the engine will not shift into high gear, misfires randomly, check engine light comes on and the car "bucks." this is very dangerous on the highway because the car is unable to accelerate and it "bucks." the gas mileage is very poor (17 mpg). My garage (works exclusively on japanese cars) they see similar problems on many subaru models and years.*ak

While making a left hand turn consumer drove over a pot and both of the vehicles front airbags deployed. There was no front end damage. Please provide any further information. Ts

Front right wheel abs module failed while pulling into driveway. Dealer contacted. *akthe brake light is on because the abs module leaks. The abs module was replaced. *jg

Electrical connector that holds the head light into socket has shorted out 4 times. This actually melts and smells like a electrical fire. We've had to replace both head light connector's 2 times. This is a 1995 subaru legacy. The dealer in angles camp,ca has told us he has seen this problem many times for the model and year of our car. *nlm

Consumer received recall letter 01v216000 on front coil springs. Consumer went to dealer, dealer stated that subaru was aware of the problem. Subaru couldn't correct recall because of a non subaru part that was blocking coil spring. *ak *yh

While driving at 5 mph consumer crossed over a railroad track that was a normal route, and both side airbags deployed. Consumer had vehicle towed to place of business. *ak *yd

Consumer noticed spots on driveway. Vehicle was taken to dealership for inspection. Dealer determined that o rings were leaking, also front crank seal had to be replaced.*ak. Consumer also stated the check engine light illuminated, the dealer removed carbon build up at the throttle plate, also work was needed on the powertrain.*jb

Consumer was traveling about 55mph on the highway and without prior warning front hood flew off. Windshield and hood were smashed, and t roof had a dent on top hood. Hood had a double latch for security. Dealership was aware of problem.*ak

Newly-acquired abs/awd model of otherwise similar subaru wagon that had taken same described turn hundreds of times: descending wet gravel road in 2nd gear, while braking simultaneously and approaching a tight turn, the car actually began to speed up -- so, instead of slowing to point where brakes alone would take me around turn as usual, i pushed in clutch to downshift to 1st - which point i never reached, since the wagon swung around to outside of road, and slid down a steep 30' embankment, rolling over. Although neither i nor passenger [dog!] were hurt, there was extensive glass and body damage. Phone call from nearby neighbors to tow company had the wagon back up on the road within ca. 90 minutes, on second try [first try popped both tow hooks on rear, causing another 10-15' nosefirst dive that dented front fender on soft soil]. I called tow truck operator's attention to apparent lack of skid/braking marks, but the whole road had been graded by the time i returned with my camera the next day. After reinflating tire, i was able to drive it 1.5 mi. Back up mountain road to house, but abs light and warning flashers remained on until i disconnected battery. Glass replacement [windshield, hatch, rear quarter] alone over $1000, plus whatever body work [rear quarter clip, roof, hood, fenders] and paint needed. But mainly, i am afraid to drive this wagon downhill again, as awd/abs were the touted safety reasons for buying it: subaru's recent byline is "because safety is not an option".*ak

While traveling 50 mph hood popped open and flew up over windshield. Severe body damage to vehicle, 1 occupant and no injuries. *ak the incident caused major damage to hood, hinges and the enterior rear view mirror to detach and fall. *yh

Consumer was traveling approximately 35 mph and heard a noise, like something fell, dashboard lit up and there was a sudden loss of power, vehicle started coasting like it was in neutral, consumer shut vehicle off and it would not shut start up again, vehicle was towed and found that the camshaft had broken, dealer claimed there was blockage on the right side which caused camshaft to lock and then break because no oil was able to flow on that side. *slc

Manufacturer's recall wx0-72; earlier deployment of airbags due to wheel/tow hook apparatus.. When hitting a pebble airbags would deploy on point of contact. *ak the consumer was against removing of the tow hook as a solution to air bag problem. Towing with out the tow hook would damage the entire front drive system according to the consumer. *yh

Since car was purchased it has been into various dealerships regarding a water leak into the main cabin. Each dealership has claimed the car was repaired only to have it leak again shortly thereafter. The car only leaks during a heavy rain and while sitting in a parked position. I have become quite concerned with this problem. A concern is if the water is going into the cabin where else is it possibly going and affecting. Is wiring being affected? The last dealership to try and tackle this issue has claimed that the car's drain holes were plugged and water was backing up into the cabin. Dealership supposedly blew out the drain holes yet the car continued to leak after the next big rain. Another concern of mine regards the drain holes. If these holes like they say become plugged, isn't that a manufacturer's defect in itself? Wasn't the car designed with that in mind? I have gone around and around with subaru on this problem only to end up frustrated. They, to their credit, have not charged me yet for this problem but yet the problem remains. The failure of the upper strut mount was a complete circular fracture around the strut retaining nut.

Firestone aftermarket tires, model fr440, p185/70r14 , dot#: vprv4fbt127. Tread separated from tire, causing damage to vehicle.*ak

Consumer came to a complete stop at a stop sign. She proceeded to move forward and was bumped by another vehicle from behind. Upon impact, dual airbags deployed. But passenger's airbag broke windshield. Glass was everywhere. Dealership was notified, and mechanic told her that there was a problem. *ak

I was advised by the subaru repair manager that this clutch is not good. He recommended i install a higher priced forrester clutch because it will last longer. He said failure of this clutch is common. I also understand previous years have the same problems. *ak

While driving about 45 mph another vehicle in front of consumer was trying to make a left, and consumer hit the vehicle broadside. Upon impact, air bags deployed, burning consumer's right arm. *ak *ml

Vehicle was involved in an accident to right side in january 2000. Airbags did not employ. On may 12, 2000 while driving on a route #32 in the town of westminster, md., the air bag light came on and the bags deployed for no apparent reason. Lawrence subaru in hanover pa was notified and subaru sent an employee to hanover to inspect the car. At no time did subaru state that there had been a recall on this vehicle #98v315000. No notification of recall was ever received previous to deployment. On the day of the inspection, subaru did not say anything about this defect. They inspected the vehicle and pointed to the previous right side damage and damage under the vehicle and said the bags deployed because the car hit something. There is not now and was not at the time, any evidence of front impact damage. Subaru cust rel. Rick pozniak, judy york, peter bortner, and dan dalton never stated in any conversations there had been a recall. They never advised to remove the tow hooks, which were on the vehicle, and refused to repair the vehicle. We found the recall on the internet, and it was only then they admitted there was a problem, but stated this vehicle was in an accident. They admitted it took front end damage and/or tow hooks hitting an object to deploy, but refused to pay for any repairs or admit to liability. They have fought us from day one, withheld information, and were totally uncooperative. When asked specifically if this was a probem with other subarus, they said no until confronted with the recall information from the internet. They handling of this matter borders on fraud, and probably would be considered such under maryland law. *ak

My car was stopped,second in line, at the end of the exit ramp of i-91 in northampton ,ma (very slight downhill grade). The first car began to pull out. I removed foot from brake, did not place foot on gas and eased out clutch to cause car to creep forward. I looked left, saw traffic coming fast and reflexively hit brake hard. Both airbags deployed, smashing windshield. I was not hit because the seat was fully back (i'm 6'1") and because there was no impact to throw me forward. First car was 3' in front of mine. Driver confirmed i did not hit her. Massachusetts state police trooper, robert plant, responded. He asked first car driver if she had been hit (response "no"), then left scene without filing accident report (there was no accident, only a breakdown). I reported incident to subaru. They inspected car, claim scratches on bumper (pre-existing) indicate impact occured and that airbags responded correctly. There was definitely no impact, not even contact!!!*ak

Both passenger and driver airbags experienced false deployment, accident was less than 5 mph with no damage to exterior of the vehicles, the deployment shattered the windshield of the vehicle. Yh

Windshield wipers work intermittently. In wet weather conditions windshield wipers don't clear well enough for driver to see the road, they smear. Subaru is doing nothing to rectify the problem. This has been an ongoing problem. *ak *ml

Hood pops up to safety latch & vibrates. Multiple times in past 3 yrs. Reported to dealer = "no problem found".*ak

Changing lanes, sand on road, car began fishtailing wildly, went off road, crashed. Happened before on snow at same speed. Both times with same bridgestone blizzak snow tires. Car has all wheel drive. Driver did not over-correct steering or apply the brakes. *ak

While pulling off from a yield sign driver's side and passenger's side airbags deployed for no apparent reason. Problem was reported to the dealership and manufacturer, subaru not accepting any responsibility for the incident. *ak *ml

Plastic end piece of hand lever broke, allowing spring to be ejected. Ratcheting mechanism no longer works. In a crash, the emergency brake would not function as expected. On hand would have to be left on the brake to keep it applied, instead of applying the brake and returning both hands to the steering wheel for crash avoidance.

Poor design of horn buttons are difficult to locate even when steering wheel is in neutral position and impossible to locate when going around curves without taking eyes off the road. Nlm

Voltage regulator in alternator failed, allowing high voltage surge through electrical system. Fusible link burned out, resulting in loss of all electrical power while driving. In addition, when fusible link burned, it partially melted underside of plastic fuse cover in engine compartment. Dealer service department stated that other electrical problems should be expected as a result of the high voltage surge.

The inhibiter switch which prevents the car from being put into gear without the brake being depressed gets stuck and does not allow the car to be put into gear. The console must be taken off. I took the car in to the dealer 4 times from 9/95-1/96 just after i purchased it. They could not find the problem until i left the car with them for 3 days. They replaced a control unit, which did no good. They replaced the inhibitor switch and it was fixed. Now, 3 years later i am having the same problem again.

Seatbelt on drivers side keeps coming unravelled, and gets stuck in retractor, has had it replaced, but problem still exists. *ak consumer stated that the seatbelt lasted a year and half because it was not driven after replacement. *yd

Airbags deployed, resulting in minor injuries. A recall has been issued on the vehicle make. However this vehicle is not included due to vin. Recall 98v135000. The manufacturer has been notified. *ak

Driveshaft and case on manual transmission failed, consequently destroying clutch, had transmission repaired, failed again after one week. *ak

Consumer was driving about 40 mph up a hill and engine check light came on. Consumer lost all power of the vehicle. When putting fuel into the tank, the vehicle will only take about 1 or 2 gallons of gas and the fuel tank won't take anymore gas. The guage isn't working right. Contacted the dealer, and the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they put more gas into the vehicle, but the problem is still there. *ak

While driving over a dip at low speed, both air bags deployed without impact. However, the windshield was smashed and the dashboard had to be replaced, due to violent/false deployment which resulted in injury. *yc

Cosumer have experience all wheels locking up after pulling into an intersection at approximately 9 mph, normal road condition, reason unknown. Manufacturer. Was notified. *ak

Consumer was driving at approx 60 mph down a 10 mile long winding narrow hill road, went to change lanes but could not get in, had to apply brakes. Pushed hard, almost to floor, had no response. When gas guage was 1/2 full, suddenly dropped to show empty tank, will read empty for many miles (100+)

While driving vehicle about 25 mph the comsumer stepped on the brake pedal and the vehicle did not stop; depending on the speed of the vehicle, the longer the vehicle will stop. The dealer did check the system and did not find anything wrong with the abs. Comsumer had not contacted the manufacturer. *ak

Consumer's son was driving aprrox 35 mph ran over a pothole on passenger's side, driver's side air bag deployed. Consumer received few scretches. Wearing seatbelt, no damage to car. *ak

Brake rotors warped twice, at 20000 and 36000 miles. Dealer resurfaced rotors at 20855 miles, rotors have warped again within 17000 miles, no unusual driver brake applications have heated rotors, vehicle shudders heavily when coming to a stop. Suspect defective/inferior rotor metals.

When braking under normal conditions severe vibration occurs in front end due to excessive warping of all four brake rotors. *ak *ml

While driving on i-95 in delaware near pa border, in a high wind, my car suddently swerved to the right. I dont know if it was caused by wind or not. In trying to straigten out car, i seemed to have overcorrected and swerved left, across a lane and into a guardrail, giving me neck and back injuries, trauma, and 28000 worth of damage to car. I remembered after the accident that something similar had happend on a rainy day a while back ( i have hd this car a year or so) . I was at an intersection and the car suddently swerved left ( different direction this time). I was able to correct that successfully. I contacted subaru which has no record of problems like i am describing. I am now afraid to drive car on a highway, since it felt untrustworthy. While there was high wind that day, i did not specifically feel a gust carry the car- the swerving seemed to be for no reason.*ak

Inadvertent air bag deployment can occur after undercarriage contact of the tow hooks with curb, dip, speedbump anf other road hazards. Consumers feel removal of the tow hook is an unacceptable repair for possible air bag deployment recall (98v-315). Nlm

The horn consists of two thumb-sized buttons near the perimeter of the steering wheel, at about the 3 and 9 o'clock positions. These buttons are hard to find, particularly when the steering wheel is being turned. This is a dangerous, flawed design. The horn is not easy to locate automatically, and you do not want to take your eyes off the road to find it, especially when in a situation that requires its use.

The middle rear seat belt buckle strap is too long for any of the infant seats we were able to find. The buckle lays right where the strap needs to go through the hook in the infant seat, making it impossible to get a tight fit. It has been suggested that we use a rolled towel to boost the seat up and make it tight, but we are unsure of how safe that would be. Is that an acceptable solution to this problem? Would our baby be as safe in an accident with the rolled-towel method as if the belt itself were a shorter length?

Abs braking system needlessly engages at moderate speed and light braking, drastically increasing stopping distance, on washboard surfaced roads (dirt or gravel or snow). Loose material may or may not be present. This has caused many near accidents. A different non-abs equipped vehicle stops in a much shorter distance in identical conditions, with braking moderate enough to avoid lock-ups or loss of steering control. *ak
