• Igniter assembly failure investigation # PE87057

  Summary: toyota recovered some failed ignition control modules from thefield. Investigation showed that a solder joint in the power transistorof the module was subject to failure. Because the part is an" emissionrelated component" a voluntary emissions recall campaign was conducted.The predominant mode of failure is an inability to start the engine,although a stalled condition can occur while the engine is running.Since the reported occurence of accidents and injuries is small, and therepair is being conducted under the emissions recall campaign, theliklehood of further accidents and injuries is remote.===

  ===repair cost reimbursement that might be more forthcoming if a steeringcontrol problem were alleged.Toyota is convinced that no common failureexists that could cause a sudden loss of steering control."analysis:based upon the information presented by consumers and toyota,no common failure mode has been identified.That is, the months, miles,and calendar date of failure do not indicate an infant mortality or afatigue type of pattern.Part sales data provided by toyota indicates thatthe steering main shaft assembly for use in manual steering had a salesrate four times that of its power steering counterpart.In addition,sales data indicated a replacement rate of the manual steering sliding yokesub-assembly to be twice that of its power steering counterpart.Thesales data does not appear to indicate any particular pattern with respectto a definable failure mode.Toyota "changed the shape" of the main andintermediate shaft and sliding yokes in 1987 for ease of assembly.Proposed action:close this preliminary evaluation.

From the time these firestone (dayton) widetrack metric tires were purchased new, these tires would slide unexpectedly at all speeds on wet roads and at unpredictable times. The tires did not hydroplane and the road surface only needed to be wet for this unpredictable condition. Air pressure did not have an effect on wet traction. Tire wear and dry traction were normal. These firestone tires were replaced while they still had good tread with michelin tires and the wet traction problem was completely corrected. The tire dealer, commercial tire in elkridge, md, was contacted when the tires were new with this problem and did not provide any assistance or offer any correction, they only indicated that these were the better of the two tires they had for this vehicle application.*ak (dot number: hye9 437 tiresize: 165r13 82t)
