Front Door Exterior Handle Sticking in the Open Position

CONDITION SUMMARY:
Situation: After opening either front door with the exterior handle, the following may occur:
• the exterior door handle may 'stick' in the open position;
• the door may not latch, and;
• with the ignition 'ON', the 'door open' warning will be activated.
Cause: This may be caused by the handle binding between the body panel and the lock barrel.
Action: Should a customer express this concern, follow the Service Instruction outlined below.

NOTE: Normal Warranty policies and procedures apply.
SERVICE INSTRUCTION:
1. Remove the affected front exterior door handle(s) [refer to TOPIx Workshop Manual, section 501-14].
2.
CAUTION: Remove only the burr and
split line; DO NOT remove any material from
the radius.
CAUTION: Do not remove any material
from the right-hand exterior door handle
bezel.
Left-hand only: place the door lock cylinder with
the key slot face down and file the moulding split
line to remove the burr from the radius.
3.
NOTE: Using a suitable degreaser, clean
the handle before and after removing the
moulding split line.
NOTE: Remove only the moulding split
line; DO NOT remove any material from the
door handle strap.
Left-hand and right-hand: using suitable 800grit abrasive cloth, remove the moulding split line
from the center of the door handle strap.
4.
NOTE: Do not use excessive lubricant.
Left-hand and right-hand: lubricate the handle
strap face surface and side surfaces using a KSP
105 from the oil and grease kit.

5.
NOTE: Using a suitable degreaser, clean
the handle before and after removing the
burr/flash.
NOTE: Do not use excessive lubricant.
Left-hand and right-hand: using suitable 800grit abrasive cloth, remove the burr/flash from
both rear edges of the strap until smooth (arrowed
in graphic).
 Lubricate the rear face and sides using KSP
105 from the oil and grease kit.
6.
NOTE: Do not remove the retaining
screw completely.
Loosen the retaining screw and slide the handle
securing plate rearwards, ensuring the location
lugs are tight against the door panel aperture.
 Tighten the retaining screw.
7. Install the exterior front door handle(s) [refer to TOPIx Workshop Manual, section 501-14].

Situation: After opening either front door with the exterior handle, the following may occur:

The exterior door handle may 'stick' in the open position;
•
The door may not latch, and;
• With the ignition 'ON', the 'door open' warning may be activated.
Action: In the event of a customer concern of the above, refer to the Repair Procedure outlined below to
rework the front door exterior handle(s).

REPAIR PROCEDURE
REWORK FRONT DOOR EXTERIOR HANDLE(S)
1. Refer to Workshop Manual, section 501-14: Handles, Locks,
Latches and Entry Systems, and remove the affected lefthand (LH) or right-hand (RH) front door exterior handle.
2. LH ONLY: Place door lock cylinder with key slot facing
'downwards' (face down).
CAUTION: Remove only the burr and split line; do not
remove any material from radius.
3. Remove burr by filing split line from the radius.
CAUTION: Remove only the molding split line; do not
remove any material from the door handle strap.
NOTE: Using a suitable degreaser, clean handle before
and after removing the molding split line.
4. Clean handle.
5. LH and RH: Using suitable 800-grit abrasive cloth, remove
the molding split line from the center of the door handle strap.
6. LH and RH: Using suitable 800-grit abrasive cloth, remove
the molding split line from both rear edges of the door handle
strap.
7. Clean handle.
CAUTION: Do not use excessive lubricant.
8. Using a KSP 105 from the kit (JLM21206), lubricate the
handle strap face, rear, and side surfaces.
CAUTION: Do not completely remove the retaining
screw.
9. Loosen the retaining screw and slide the handle securing
plate rearwards:
•
Ensure the locating lugs are tight against the door panel
aperture.
•
Tighten the retaining screw.
10. Refer to Workshop Manual, section 501-14: Handles,
Locks, Latches and Entry Systems, and install the reworked
handle.
11. Only if necessary, repeat steps 1-10 to the opposite front
door exterior handle.
