CONDITION SUMMARY:
Situation: A loss of performance may be experienced and/or the engine Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
may be illuminated. Upon diagnosis, the technician may find one or more misfire Diagnostic Trouble Codes
(DTC [P0300, P0301, P0302, P0303, P0304, and/or P1315]) stored in the Engine Control Module (ECM). The
ECM is to be reprogrammed in order to protect the engine against damaging combustion events.
Cause: This may be caused by ECM software which, under certain conditions, could lead to damaging precombustion events that may lead to potential piston damage within the engine.
Action: Should a customer express this concern, refer to the Service Instruction outlined below.
PARTS:
No Parts Required
TOOLS:
Refer to Workshop Manual for any required special tools.

2Turn ignition 'ON' (engine not running).
3Connect the Symptom Driven Diagnostics (SDD) system to the vehicle and begin a new session.
4Follow the on-screen prompts, allowing SDD to read the VIN and identify the vehicle and initiating the data
collect sequence.
5Read the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) from the vehicle.
• If a misfire DTC does not return after completing two drive cycles which simulate the drive cycle
reported by the customer when the fault first flagged, go to Step 6.
• If a misfire DTC is present and does not return after being cleared, go to Step 7.
6Carry out a cylinder pressures check (see TOPIx Workshop Manual, section 303-00).
• If the cylinder pressures check passes, go to Step 7.
• If one of the cylinders is significantly lower than the other cylinders, carry out a cylinder leakage test.
Remove the oil filler cap to check if there is a significant leakage of air past the piston escaping via the
crankcase.
• If the cylinder pressures check and cylinder leakage tests do confirm a fault with the engine, submit a
FRED request for a replacement engine and include compression and leakage test data.
7Check VIN in DDW for Service Action K306 eligibility.
• If K306 is not open, no further action is required.
• If K306 is open, refer to Technical Bulletin K306NAS for the appropriate Service Instruction. To be
carried out as a separate claim.
• Once K306 is completed, no further action is required.
8Exit the current session.
9Disconnect the SDD and the battery power supply from the vehicle.
