Never Mix Up Connecting Rod Caps!
AFFECTED VEHICLES
General Information
For over 10 years, we've been using fracture-split connecting rods in our engines. Unlike a machined connecting rod, this
rod is forged as a single piece of metal. Then, using special equipment, the large end of the rod is precisely scored, and
the rod cap is literally snapped from the rod.
This process results in an uneven fracture surface on the connecting rod and rod cap, which gives a more precise,
durable cap-to-rod fit. Fracture-split connecting rods offer greater strength and longer service life.
Because that fit is so precise, you must be careful not to mix up the rod caps when removing/replacing pistons. If you
install the wrong rod cap on a connecting rod, or install it backwards, you'll damage the mating surfaces when you torque
the cap bolts.
If nothing is done about it, over time, that connecting rod and its bearings will need replacement. In severe cases, it could
lead to major crankshaft journal damage, requiring possible short block replacement.
So, to help ensure a trouble-free repair, here are a few tips to remember:
•
Use a grease pencil or a punch to mark each rod cap and its corresponding connecting rod with the cylinder number
it came from. This ensures you're putting the same rod and cap back together with the right orientation.
The uneven mating surfaces
are uniquely matched
and not interchangeable.
Mark the connecting rod and rod cap
with the cylinder number.
These are manufacturing marks,
and do not indicate the
cylinder number.
•
Don't confuse the existing markings on the side of the connecting rod and rod cap with a cylinder number. They're
just manufacturing marks referring to the size of the big end of the rod.
•
When torqueing the rod cap bolts, refer to the service information for details.
If you'd like to see a video on this subject, we've added one to Tech2Tech®. Look for "Tips When Working with Fracture
Rods."

SYMPTOM
When the vehicle speed is set by the conventional cruise control while in EV driving mode, the cruise control operation
will cancel itself when the engine comes on.
NOTE:
•
No indicator comes on or message is displayed on the dashboard, and no DTC is stored.
•
Cruising speed can be resumed by pressing the Resume button.
POSSIBLE CAUSE
A program is missing in the current PCM software that prevents the cancellation from occurring.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Update the PCM software with the latest version. Clear all DTCs before doing the update, do the PCM idle learn
procedure, and do the PCM CKP pattern clear/learn procedure.
SOFTWARE INFORMATION
NOTE: Unnecessary or incorrect repairs resulting from a failure to update the i-HDS or MVCI are not covered under
warranty.
i-HDS Software Version: 1.002.017 or later
J2534 Software Information:
PC Application Version: 1.1.01 or later
Database Update: 23-FEB-2017
Before beginning the repair, make sure that both the i-HDS and J2534 software are updated as listed above.
Do only the update listed in this service bulletin.
You cannot apply the updates with the MVCI as a standalone tool. To update the software, you must use the MVCI or
the DST-i interface in conjunction with the J2534 Rewrite PC application on the i-HDS.
For more information about updating the i-HDS, the MVCI, and vehicle systems, refer to Service Bulletin 01-026,

REPAIR PROCEDURE
NOTE:
•
•
You cannot update the vehicle using the MVCI as a standalone tool.
Do not use the MongoosePro VCI tool.
•
•
Make sure the 12-volt battery is fully charged before starting an update.
Connect a fully charged jumper battery to the vehicle, and leave it connected during the entire procedure
to maintain steady voltage.
Never turn the ignition to OFF or ACCESSORY during the update. If there is a problem with the update, leave
the ignition turned to ON.
To prevent PCM damage, do not operate anything electrical (headlights, audio system, brakes, A/C,
power windows, door locks, etc.) during the update.
If you see the following Error Display, check that you are using the correct tool (MVCI or DST-i) with the i-HDS.
