SB-17-013 CHARGE AIR COOLER (CAC)
INSPECTION P0299 P226C
GROUP: 0-GENERAL
DATE: 8-31-2017
REFERENCE: HMM-170831-J1
SUBJECT VEHICLES: 16MY-17MY Conventional Trucks equipped with an
J08E engine.
Note: This tech tip is provided as technical information and is not
authorization for a warrantable repair.
DESCRIPTION OF CONDITION:
In the event that a subject vehicle exhibits low power with DTC (Diagnostic
Trouble Code) P0299 (underboost) and/or P226C (boost pressure slow
response), inspect the CAC (Charge Air Cooler) for any ruptured tubes
before performing in depth diagnostics on the intake system. A ruptured
CAC will result in low boost. Operating the engine with low boost for
extended periods can eventually cause damage to the DPF (Diesel
Particulate Filter).
Inspection of the DPF may be necessary if the engine still has low power,
or is not completing regeneration properly after replacing a ruptured CAC.
Soot accumulation on the tailpipe may also indicate that the DPF has been
damaged.
