Initial publication
A DTC with the description “Invalid Data Record” is stored after a control unit has been replaced or updated.
Technical Background
This DTC is normal after replacing a control module or after updating the control module software. This DTC
indicates the parameter data has not been properly programmed into the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) by
SVM. Without the correct parameter data the control unit cannot function properly in the vehicle.
Production Solution
Not applicable.

Service
The DTC can only be cleared if the parameter data is programmed into the ECU using SVM.
Parameter data can only programed by SVM.
1 If there is no GFF test plan for the DTC, execute an SVM specified vs. actual comparison or SVM
check module configuration.
2 If SVM does not provide a response with updated parameter data (“parameterization”), search for
any applicable TSBs with an SVM exchange code. The code can also be listed in ETKA under the
“Remarks” section for the specific part, or at the top of the illustration page in the “Name” section
description. SVM exchange codes typically follow the format of “XCHGDAA001”, where “DA” is the
diagnostic address of the control unit. For instance, for the B8 S4 14 – damping control unit (J250)
(address word 14), the SVM exchange code is XCHG14A001. It is important to note there can be
multiple active exchange codes for a single diagnostic address. Reference ETKA and any possible
parts bulletins for the correct exchange code.
3 If a parts bulletin number is found,
open the bulletin to view the code
(Figure 1). Some parts bulletins are
linked directly in ETKA. The user can
simply click on the link to open the
bulletin (Figure 2).

4 If no URL link is provided, then to
view the parts bulletin click on the
“INFOLINE” tab at the top of the
ETKA window (Figure 3). Select the
tab titled “Technology” and then click
on “GP bulletins”. Scroll down to the
applicable parts bulletin number. A
second option is using the search
Figure 3. GP Parts bulletin listings under the INFOLINE tab
feature to find the parts
bulletin. When searching, use the
parts bulletin number in the “Caption”
field by putting the number between
parentheses and adding an “*” on
the end, e.g. (9-119)* (Figure 4).

5 If no parts bulletin or SVM code is provided and the DTC cannot be cleared, then using Guided
Functions (right click control unit in GFF and select Guided Functions), select the Replacement Test
Plan for the control unit. Not all control units will have this test plan. If there is no replacement test
plan available under Guided Functions or if the DTC cannot be cleared, contact TAC.
If the main programming of the module was updated using an SVM code and the DTC cannot be
cleared, contact TAC.
