General Information
A considerable number of Freightliner-branded and Delco cassette players are being returned to warranty as
non-functional, when all that is needed is to correctly clean the tape heads.
Freightliner-branded and Delco cassette players require periodic cleaning of the tape heads. After 35 hours of
use, the unit displays "TP CLEAN" for 5 seconds every time a cassette tape is inserted. When this happens, the
heads must be cleaned, using the procedure below. After cleaning the heads, the "TP CLEAN" timer must be
reset to clear the "TP CLEAN" display.
Use the instructions below to clean the tape heads and reset the "TP CLEAN" timer.
Procedure
NOTE: The following instructions are also in the cassette player’s owner’s manual, which is in the vehicle at the time of delivery.
IMPORTANT: Cleaning the cassette player tape heads and resetting the "TP CLEAN" timer is the responsibility of the vehicle owner. This procedure is not covered by warranty.
CAUTION
Failure to clean the tape heads after every 35 hours of use may result in damage to the heads. Using
damaged, dirty, or poor quality tapes could cause the cassette player to fail. Damage to the tape player
caused by lack of cleaning or using damaged, dirty, or poor quality tapes is not covered by warranty.
Cleaning the Tape Heads
1. Turn on the ignition. Make sure the receiver is off.
2. Disable the "bad tape detect" mode by pressing and holding the tape mode button (the button with the cassette tape icon) for 5 seconds, until the display reads "BAD TAPE DETECT OFF."
3. Turn on the receiver.
4. Insert a wet-type, non-abrasive, scrubbing tape-head cleaner. Follow the instructions that come with the
cleaner.
5. After the cleaning is complete, go to "Resetting the ’TP CLEAN’ Timer."
Resetting the "TP CLEAN" Timer
1. If not already done, turn on the ignition and the receiver.
2. Press and hold the tape eject button for 5 seconds.
The unit’s display will flash the tape icon, then "TP CLEAN" after 3 seconds, and "CLN RST" after 5 seconds.
IMPORTANT: If the tape eject button is released before "CLN RST" is displayed, the "TP CLEAN"
timer will not be reset to zero. Repeat the procedure.
Warranty
This is an informational bulletin only; warranty does not apply.
