SITUATION
There is a grating or scraping noise when the steering wheel is turned. The noise comes from the steering
column switch cluster (SZL), coil spring or steering wheel.
CAUSE
When the steering wheel is turned, the connection between the steering wheel and the steering column switch
cluster causes torsional stress, which creates a noise in the coil spring cassette.
CORRECTION

F25 (X3), F15 (X5), F16 (X6) and I12 (i8) – Install Teflon tape and grease SZL as needed

I01 (i3) – Check and replace the SZL as needed

PROCEDURE
Repair procedure for I01 only.
If there is a buzzing noise coming from the
steering column, proceed as follows.
Check the label on the coil spring cassette
as shown in the picture.
Refer to ISTA repair instructions “61 31
008 Removing and installing (replacing)
steering column switch cluster”
If the revision index is not “AI03” or the
production date is earlier than “14May01”,
replace the coil spring cassette.
In the example in the picture, the label
shows a revision index of “AI02” and a
production date of “14Mar31” and must be
replaced.
Always inspect the label on the new part to
ensure it is the updated part.
Note: replace the 4 mounting bolts that
secure the SZL to the steering column.
(P/N 61 31 8 380 482)
In order to remove the coil spring cassette
from the steering column switch cluster,
unclip the 2 retaining tabs to separate the
two parts.
Replace the coil spring cassette and install
on to the steering column switch cluster.
2
Reinstall the steering column switch
cluster onto the steering column and
tighten the new retaining bolts in the order
shown.

2
Repair procedure for F15, F16, F25 and I12
Refer to ISTA repair instructions “61
31 008 Removing and installing
(replacing) steering column switch
cluster”
Turn the steering wheel over and
clean the flange surface and then
install a piece of white Teflon tape
(locally sourced) to the drive flange
as shown.
3
Check the coil spring cassette for a
metal tab as shown. If the coil spring
cassette has a tab, replace it.
If the coil spring cassette does not
have a metal tab continue to the next
step.
The updated coil spring cassette is
identified by inspecting the label on
the coil spring cassette. It should
indicate a revision index higher than
“AI02” and a production date after
“14Jan20”.
Check the highlighted tabs for grease
as shown.
If no grease is present, use
83 23 9 407 810 and put a touch of
grease on the highlighted spots. Do
not use any other grease or the
plastic will be damaged.
Reassemble the SZL and steering
wheel and retest for noises.
