• Recall 126631 [USA]: During a frontal impact, unbelted, small adult, drivers could be at a higher risk of neck injury.
  Bmw of north america, llc (bmw) is recalling certain 2014-2018 bmw i3 electric and hybrid electric vehicles. Unbelted, small adult, drivers may be at a higher risk of neck injury in the event of a frontal crash. These vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) number 208, "occupant crash protection."
  bmw will notify owners, and dealers will update the driver air bag control unit software, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin january 8, 2018. Owners may contact bmw customer service at the dedicated i3 recall number 1-855-269-3361.

• Recall 121986 [USA]: A fuel vapor leak in the presence of an ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.
  Bmw of north america, llc (bmw) is recalling certain 2014-2017 i3 rex hybrid electric vehicles. The fuel tank vent line may rub against the ribbed wire protection sleeve of the battery positive (b+) cable, creating a hole in the vent line and causing a fuel vapor leak.

• Recall 106523 [USA]: In the event of a vehicle crash, an air bag that does not deploy properly increases the risk of injury to the front seat passenger.
  Bmw of north america, llc (bmw) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 mini cooper s and mini cooper two-door vehicles, 2015-2016 mini john cooper works and mini cooper s and mini cooper four-door vehicles and 2014-2015 bmw i3 vehicles. Due to a manufacturing error, the passenger frontal air bag may not deploy properly in a low speed crash. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) number 208, "occupant crash protection."

• Recall R/2015/244 [UK]: Steering may not behave as designed
  The engine current sensors have not been calibrated correctly which could lead to an increased recuperation torque during vehicle deceleration. An increased recuperation torque during deceleration could lead to a vehicle oversteer condition in the i3 and vehicle understeer condition in the i8. This could lead to skidding on slippery roads during driving.

• Recall 2017068 [Canada]: Fuel supply
  On certain i3 rex models, a section of the fuel tank vent line could chafe against an adjacent ribbed wire protector. Over time, this chaffing could lead to the fuel tank vent line wearing through and leaking. Due to enclosed engine compartment of this vehicle and elevated underhood temperatures, this could increase the risk of a fire causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: dealers will install a clip between the fuel tank vent line and the adjacent ribbed wire protector to prevent contact, and the fuel tank vent line will be inspected and replaced as necessary.

• Recall 2015343 [Canada]: Electrical
  Certain vehicles, which were parked at the port of entry in halifax during the ice storms in february 2015, may have been exposed to excessive standing water and salt for an extended period due to this isolated environmental incident. Certain mini models could have corrosion at the starter motor power supply cable connectors, which could lead to the inability to restart the engine following an engine shutdown by the start-stop (msa) system, increasing the risk of crash causing injury in a traffic situation. On certain bmw models, the lubrication of some internal components within the steering rack may have been exposed to excessive water or salt which could result in higher than normal steering effort or steering binding, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. In addition, electrical wires and/or connectors in all affected vehicles may have been exposed to water or salt, which could lead to increased electrical system resistance, and increase the risk of fire causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: owners should contact their selling retailer regarding this recall. Affected vehicles will be inspected. Some vehicles will be taken out of service immediately and owners will be provided with temporary transportation until a new replacement vehicle is available. All other vehicles are cleared of this safety concern and may continue to be driven until a new replacement vehicle is available. Due to potential concerns about long term vehicle quality, all affected vehicles will ultimately be removed from service.

  Nhtsa received a petition on or about july 18, 2022, requesting that federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the united states. The petition can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under odi number 11486072.Fmvss 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 kg or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after march 1, 2021.The petitioner asserts that hybrid and electric vehicles to which the standard does not apply should be found to contain a safety defect. In support of the petition, the petitioner includes findings contained in a bill introduced in the house of representatives in 2009, the pedestrian safety enhancement act of 2009, h.R. 734, 111th cong. (2009). A related bill, the pedestrian safety enhancement act of 2010, became law in january 2011 (pub. L. 111-373). The petitioner requests that nhtsa require all electric and hybrid vehicles comply with fmvss 141, regardless of production date.The defect petition has been opened to evaluate the issue and determine whether to grant or deny the petition.The associated product list is not exhaustive and may contain vehicles that are equipped with pedestrian alert sounds.

Only 5 years old 41k miles, mint condition, while driving the light came on saying "driver restraint system malfunction. After checking all the i3 blogs this seems to be an ongoing issue. I took my car over to bmw today, they looked at it and said the airbag has malfunctioned same thing as the blogs are outlining. I was advised but the service person that it would be 1800.00 i told him this is an issue with the i3 and its all over the blogs, he acknowledged his awareness, in addition airbags should be good for 10 years / guaranteed? Anyway i emailed the following bmw north american management asking why this is not a recall. Bernhard kuhnt - president and ceo of north america/bmw group region americas richard hart - warranty department head north america shaun bugbee - executive vice president bmw the have just been allowing people to fix their defective airbag, as they installed substandard equipment on a $50k car. Anyway this needs to be looked into i have pictures of the warning but it will not allow me to update as they are too big and i don't know how to compress. Thank you for your time and service..

The vehicle was taken to bmw of rochester hills, 45550 dequindre rd, shelby charter twp, mi 48317, and was diagnosed but the contact was not aware what was the diagnostic. The vehicle was not repaired due to the repair fee. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000. The vin was not available.

The driver's side airbag indicator illuminated upon vehicle startup. The dealer diagnosed that there was a fault in the system and that the airbag might not deploy in a collision. This failure made the vehicle unsafe to drive.

The adaptive cruise control (acc) in the i3 is single camera based, and will deactivate during a number of conditions (such as driving into direct sunlight which blinds the camera.) this is a design limitation, but not the problem. The problem is when acc deactivates, the car immediately goes into full regen braking without warning. At highway speeds this is a sudden and significant deceleration that poses a safety hazard (being rear ended).
