Check Campaigns/Actions screen in Elsa on the day of repair to verify that a VIN qualifies for repair under this
action. Elsa is the only valid campaign inquiry & verification source.
Problem Description

Campaign status must show “open.”

If Elsa shows other open action(s), inform your customer so that the work can also be completed at
the same time the vehicle is in the workshop for this campaign.
Over time, affected vehicles may develop gearbox noise due to an insufficient supply of oil
within the gearbox.
Corrective Action
Replace the DSG gearbox.
Parts Information
Parts allocation did not occur. Dealers should place orders by VIN for affected vehicles currently
in dealer inventory. Dealers scheduling customer vehicle repairs must place their parts order by
VIN and ensure that parts are on-hand when the vehicle arrives at the dealership for the
scheduled repair appointment.
Code Visibility
On or about May 25, 2017, affected vehicles were listed on the Inventory Vehicle Open
Campaign Action report under My Dealership Reports (found on www.vwhub.com & OMD Web).
A list was not posted for dealers who did not have any affected vehicles.
On or about May 25, 2017, this campaign code showed open on affected vehicles in Elsa.
On or about May 25, 2017, affected vehicles were identified with this campaign code in the VIN
Lookup tool at www.vw.com.
Owner Notification
Owner notification took place in May 2017. Owner letter examples are included in this bulletin
for your reference.
Campaign Expiration
Date
This campaign expires on December 31, 2020. Repairs must be performed on or before this
date to be eligible for payment. Keep this expiration date in mind when scheduling customers
for this action. If a customer wishes to have this service performed after the expiration date,
your dealerships normal parts and labor cost associated with this repair will apply.
Additional Information
Please alert everyone in your dealership about this action, including Sales, Service, Parts
and Accounting personnel. Contact Warranty if you have any questions.
Dealers must ensure that every affected inventory vehicle has this campaign completed before
delivery to consumers.

Over time, affected vehicles may develop gearbox noise due to an insufficient supply
of oil within the gearbox.
What will we do?
Your authorized Volkswagen dealer will replace the DSG gearbox in your vehicle. This
work will take about a day to complete and will be performed for you free of charge.
What should you do?
Because your dealer must special order the parts needed to complete this repair on your
vehicle, please call your authorized Volkswagen dealer as soon as possible to schedule this
repair. Your dealer will ensure that the correct parts are available at the dealership when
you arrive for your scheduled appointment. For your convenience, you can also visit

Move the selector lever to park

Lift the vehicle from all four mounts from lifting
platform at the same height.

Carefully pull the engine cover off the bolts one
after the other in direction of . Do not
remove the engine cover on one side or in a
jerking manner.
Air filter housing, removing:

Remove the bolts <1 and 3>.

Free up the coolant hose <2>.
•
Release the locking mechanism in direction of
 and remove the air guide upper
section <1>.

Disconnect the vacuum hose <1>.
•
Loosen the clamp <2> and remove the air
guide hose.

Carefully remove the air filter housing <3>.

Battery removing, underhood batteries:
•
Turn off the ignition
equipment.
•
Remove the ignition key, if equipped.
•
Open the heat protection sleeve cover.
•
Open the cover <4> over the battery negative
terminal.
•
Loosen the nut <6> a few turns and disconnect
the battery ground cable terminal clamp <5>
from the battery negative terminal.
•
Open the cover <3> over the battery positive
terminal.
•
Loosen the nut <2> several turns and remove
the battery positive cable terminal <1> from
the battery positive terminal.
•
Pull the heat protection sleeve <4> slightly
upward.

NOTE
For vehicles with trunk mounted batteries,
disconnect and isolate the negative terminal before
proceeding with this repair. It will not be necessary
to remove trunk mounted batteries.
•
Remove the bolt <2> from the bracket <1>.
•
Remove the bracket <1>.
•
Remove the battery <3> in the direction of
travel from the battery tray and lift it upward out
of the engine compartment.

Free up the wiring harness from the battery
tray .
•
Remove the bolts and nut <2>.
•
Remove the battery tray <1>.
•
Remove the selector lever cable from the
transmission .
NOTE
•
Use pliers to remove the lock washer from
the cable bracket. Do not use a sharp-edged
lever or the selector lever cable could get
damaged.
•
Risk of damaging the selector lever cable.
Do not bend or kink the selector lever cable.

Remove the charge air pipe with the charge air
hose <1 and 5> by disconnecting the fastener
<4> and removing the clamps.
•
Clamp the coolant hoses going to the
transmission oil cooler with the -3094- hose
clamps.
•
Loosen the hose clamps  and
remove the coolant hoses from the
transmission fluid cooler.
•
Remove the bolts <1> and move the
Transmission Coolant Valve -N488- to the
side.
•
Seal off the transmission fluid cooler
connections with suitable sealing plugs taken
from the -VAS6122-.

NOTE
There is a risk of damaging the DSG Transmission
Mechatronic -J743- with static electricity. Do not
touch contacts in DSG Transmission Mechatronic
-J743- connector with hands.
•
Discharge
static
electricity
before
disconnecting
the
DSG
Transmission
Mechatronic -J743- connector. To discharge
any static electricity, touch the vehicle ground
with hand (without wearing a glove).
•
Release the connector twist lock <1> for the
Mechatronic by turning it counter-clockwise (in
the direction of the starter) and remove the
connector.
•
Remove the nut <1> from the upper bolt of the
Starter.
•
Remove the ground cable <2>.

Remove the nut <6> and terminal 30/B+.
•
Remove the starter bolts <1 and 2>. Remove
the lower bolt <1> first.
•
Remove the starter <3> upward.
•
Remove all upper engine/transmission
connecting bolts.
Use the -T10179- as
necessary.

Remove the bolt <1> for the lower side coolant
pipe <2> on the engine and tie up the coolant
pipe.
•
Remove the connecting bolts <3, 4, and 5>
from the engine on the transmission.
•
Free up the front wire <6> on the transmission.
For Passat and Jetta Models (Criteria 05 and 08):
•
Disconnect the wire <1> from the E-box.

Remove the underbody noise insulation <1>

Remove the left front inner fender liner <1>
(Fig 2).

Remove the wires and the bracket from the
front oil pan  (two M6 nuts).

Route the wires near the transmission fluid
pan upward and tie them secure.

Verify the steering wheel is in the centered and
locked position.

joint <1>. Then remove the universal joint in

CAUTION
If the universal joint is separated from the
electromechanical steering gear, the following work
cannot be performed:
•
Ignition switched on.
•
Turning the steering gear.
• Turning the steering column.
These points must be observed, because
otherwise it can cause irreparable damage.
Only remove the universal joint with the steering
wheel in the centered and locked position.

driveshaft on the rear final drive using
-T10172-.
For vehicles with all-wheel drive:

Remove the three bolts  securing the
driveshaft coupling to the bevel box, as shown.

Push the front driveshaft all the way back and
tie it up using a -T10038-.
NOTE
Do not remove the bolts attaching the driveshaft to
the flexible coupling. Remove the flexible coupling
with the driveshaft attached from the bevel box.

Align the arms of the transmission support so
that they match up with the holes in the
-3282/42A-.
•
Install the mounting element as illustrated on
the -3282/42A-.
•
Place the -VAS6931- under the vehicle.
•
The arrow symbol on the - 3282/42A- points in
the direction of travel.
•
Align the -3282- so that it is parallel to the
transmission.
•
Install the -3282/29- in the transmission.
•
Secure both the other support elements to the
transmission as shown.
NOTE
•
Contrary to the illustration of the adjusting
plate, the front support element is shown
attached to the transmission with an M10 x
50 mm bolt . Install a M12 bolt
between the mount and the transmission

Support the transmission by lifting it from
underneath using the -VAS6931-.
•
The transmission is disconnected from the
engine in this position.

Remove the remaining engine/transmission
connecting bolts <8, 9, and 10> and any other
fasteners not previously removed.
•
Remove the transmission from the engine
while being careful not to damage the selector
lever cable and lower the transmission.
•
Verify all wiring and hose connections are free
and clear of the transmission before lowering.
•
Remove the transmission from the engine
(alignment sleeves). Tilt the transmission to
the left by adjusting the spindle on the
-3282-.
•
Slightly turn and lower the transmission.

Drive the needle bearing into the crankshaft up
to the installation depth using the Bearing
Installer - Bearing Press Piece -VW207C-.

Installation Depth Dimension  = 2.0 mm
NOTE
If the needle bearing was unintentionally pushed in
too deeply it must be replaced. The needle bearing
will be damaged if it is removed again. Do not reuse
a needle bearing that has been removed from the
crankshaft.

Transmission pins (not splines) must be lightly
lubricated.
•
Make sure both alignment sleeves between
the engine and the transmission are correctly
seated.
•
Make sure the intermediate plate is seated
correctly.
•
If equipped, remove the transmission support
bracket from the old transmission and install it
on the new transmission.
•
Replace the bolts with new. Install the new
bolts a few turns and leave the bracket loose
to allow freedom of movement of the bracket
during installation.

Place the transmission with the -3282- on the
-VAS6931-.
•
Place the -VAS6931- under the vehicle. The
arrow symbol on the - 3282/42A- points in the
vehicle direction of travel.
•
Tilt the transmission to the left by adjusting the
spindles on the -3282-. Then lift the
transmission.
•
Pay attention to the selector lever cable when
lifting the transmission. Guide the cable into
the cable bracket as early as possible.
•
The cable is not lubricated.
•
Guide the engine and transmission together by
hand until the engine flange and transmission
flange come into contact with one another all
around.
•
Adjust the transmission support until the
engine and transmission are aligned.
•
Turn the crankshaft slightly if necessary.
•
Be careful not to get any lines caught when
installing the transmission.
•
Install and tighten bolts <5 to 9> first by hand,
then tighten to specifications. See Chart in
next step for bolt locations and torque
specifications.
•
After the transmission is bolted to engine at the
bottom, remove the -3282- from the
transmission.
•
Install and tighten the upper bolts and all other
remaining fasteners first by hand <1, 3, and
10> of the engine/transmission. See Chart in
next step for bolt locations and torque
specifications.

Align the engine/transmission

Install the left transmission mount as follows:

Install the new bolt first hand-tight.

Pry the transmission bracket  into the seat
using a screwdriver while tightening the bolts

NOTE

There is a risk of damaging the threads in
the transmission bracket by inserting the
bolts at an angle.

Before installing the bolts <2>, the

mount support arm must be absolutely
parallel to each other. If necessary, lift the

Attach the driveshaft to the bevel box flange
and install the bolts . Tighten the
bolts to 50 Nm + 90°.
For vehicles with all-wheel drive:

Attach the bevel box heat shield <1>.

to 40 Nm.

Tighten the upper bolt to 20 Nm.

Reinstall the subframe.

The removal of the locating pins is reverse of

subframe bolt at a time.

Install new subframe bolts <1 and 2> in order

Reinstall the bolt <1> for the lower side coolant
pipe <2> on the engine and tighten the bolt to
10 Nm.

Reconnect the wire loom connections to the
front wire <6> on the transmission.

steering gear feed into the E-box and tighten
the nut. Tighten to the specification below
based on configuration:

tighten to 6.0 Nm.
For CC Models (Criteria 06):

Reconnect the connector <1>.

Reconnect the negative battery cable and

For vehicles with trunk mounted batteries, reconnect

Reinstall the engine cover.
•
In order to prevent causing damage, do not hit
the engine cover with your fist or tool.
•
Position the engine cover while paying
attention to the oil filler tube and oil dipstick.
•
Press the engine cover into the rubber
grommets on the left side first, then into the
ones on the right side.
•
Top off the coolant reservoir to account for any
coolant lost during removal of the transmission
cooler lines.
•
Verify the DSG transmission fluid level using
ODIS test plan. Add fluid as necessary.
•
Recheck coolant level after the engine is
warm.
•
Connect the ODIS diagnostic tester and clear
any faults found.
•
Adapt and code the new Mechatronics as
needed.
•
For vehicles with a vehicle level sensor,
perform the basic setting for the wheel
damping electronics. Refer to Vehicle
Diagnostic Tester.
•
Reset all customer convenience settings (onetouch power windows, clock, radio presets,
etc).

CALIFORNIA ONLY Requirements for Emissions Campaigns Having Customer Notification
The California Air Resources Board and the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) require emissions-related
campaigns to be completed prior to vehicle registration renewal. When campaign work is done you must provide
the owner with a signed “Vehicle Emission Recall – Proof of Correction” certificate (RC EMIS_CAL VW).
Certificates can be ordered at no cost online via the Compliance Label Ordering portal at www.vwhub.com.
TIP
Ensure owners are aware of the importance of retaining the completed certificate for their records. It should be
mailed to the California DMV only upon request.
Appendix A – Warning and Safety Precautions
WARNING
•
Risk of injury and accident by accidentally engaging a selector lever position with the engine running.
•
Move the selector lever into “P” and set the parking brake before working on a running engine.
•
Risk of injury if the engine starts automatically in vehicles with a Start/Stop System.
•
o
For vehicles with an activated Start/Stop System (recognizable from a notification in the instrument
cluster), the motor can be started automatically if needed.
o
Always make sure the Start/Stop System is disabled when working on the vehicle (ignition switched
off, if needed, turn the ignition back on).
There is a risk of an accident due to distractions and improperly secured testing equipment. Always secure
testing equipment to the rear seat with a strap and have a second technician operate it in the rear seat.
o
Risk of the front passenger airbag deploying during an accident. Technicians should not operate
testing equipment from the front passenger seat during a road test.
