BULLETIN NUMBER: IB19-R-001 IMPORTANT SERVICE INFORMATION FOR: SERVICE MANAGER SERVICE ADVISOR TECHNICIAN PARTS DEPARTMENT WARRANTY PERSONNEL ISSUE DATE: JUNE 2019 GROUP: ACCESSORIES ENGINE BLOCK HEATERS AND OIL PAN HEATERS USAGE AFFECTED VEHICLES All Isuzu Commercial Vehicles equipped with Engine Block Heaters and/or Oil Pan Heaters (RPO IG3, I66, I0M, 13V, 13W, 14W, 15W) INFORMATION Isuzu provides optional engine block heaters and oil pan heaters which are designed to warm the engine coolant and engine oil enough during extreme cold temperatures to allow easy starting. Oil gets thicker (more viscous) as it gets colder, which slows down the engine cranking speed. To ensure that the engine can turn over fast enough to start when prevailing temperatures drop, use the recommended viscosity engine oil as set forth in the vehicle’s Owner’s Manual. NOTE: Engine block heaters and oil pan heaters should not be utilized until the ambient temperature drops to below - 10ºF (-23ºC). To use the heaters: 1. Use a heavy duty outdoor, three-prong extension cord. Lift or remove the heater connectors’ protective cover and plug the electrical cord into the on-vehicle connection point(s). (See Figures 1-4.) CAUTION: Only use a heavy duty (12-gauge and greater), outdoor, three-prong extension cord. DO NOT use an extension cord such as you would use for a household lamp because the cord may overheat and cause a fire. Engine Block Connection Oil Pan Connection Figure 1 - 2019MY & Earlier N-Diesel Figure 3 - N-Gas Figure 2 - 2020MY N-Diesel Figure 4 - 2019MY & Earlier FTR NOTE: 2020MY Diesel vehicles (N-Series and FTR) equipped with both an engine block heater and an oil pan heater have connection points for both of these accessories integrated into a single socket. 2. Plug the cord into any three-prong 110 volt outlet (normal household current) to start the warming process. It may require several hours to sufficiently heat the engine. Outside temperature, oil viscosity, etc., will affect how long the engine block heater should remain plugged in. 3. Unplug the electrical cord(s) before starting the vehicle and install any protective covers over the connectors. Make sure the cord is properly stored in a safe location (such as inside the cab) away from engine moving parts. After starting, be sure the engine goes through a normal warm-up period to sufficiently warm the engine oil before placing the engine under load. This will ensure proper lubrication of the engine.
