SERVICE PROCEDURE
Inspect Cylinder Wall

2017 Titan and Titan XD ONLY: Refer to NTB17-053 first:

If NTB17-053 has been performed, skip to step 2.

If NTB17-053 has not been performed, do so now.
 If the incident has been resolved (knock/tick noise has stopped) after
performing NTB17-053, STOP HERE. This bulletin does not apply.
 If the incident has not been resolved after performing NTB17-053, go to step 2.
2.
Remove the # 7 spark plug.

For spark plug removal, refer to the appropriate section of the Electronic Service
Manual (ESM).
 Example: Section ENGINE MECHANICAL/(VK56VD)/PERIODIC
MAINTENANCE/SPARK PLUG/Removal and Installation.
3.
Using Essential Tool Tech Cam J-51951, visually inspect the # 7 cylinder wall for
scuffing.

If the cylinder wall has scuffing, replace the short engine assembly.
 Refer to Figure 3 and 4 on page 5 for examples of cylinder wall scuffing.
 See page 7 for warranty information.
 Refer to the appropriate section of the ESM for short engine assembly
replacement.


See page 6 for additional short engine assembly replacement instructions.
If there is no scuffing on the cylinder wall, go to CLAIMS INFORMATION (for the
“inspection” OP CODE). Refer to the ESM for further diagnosis.
 Refer to Figure 2 on page 5 for an example of an “OK” cylinder wall.

Oil Jet Installation:

Install the “short” oil jet on Bank 2 (B2) side, and the “long” oil jet on Bank 1 (B1)
side (see Figure 5 and Figure 6).
 The vertical mark should be 90° +/- 10° to the horizontal line, while the cutouts
face to the upper inward direction.
 Using a suitable tool such as a small ball peen hammer or brass hammer, tap in
the oil jet until it is fully seated (see Figure 6).
 Sealant is not needed.

Warranty Related Information When Replacing Short Engine Assembly

Record a continuous video (15 seconds or less) of the area(s) of the cylinder wall that
indicates a failed inspection and the VIN on the F.M.V.S.S. certification label (VIN
label).

Use tool Tech Cam J-51951 as needed (see page 2).

Make sure the continuous video has a clear image of the incident area(s) of the
damaged cylinder wall and the VIN on the VIN label.

The Powertrain Call Center (PCC) may require a live “Tech Cam” session.
Complete the PCC Preauthorization Form in ASIST.

See the pre-selection screen below.
Fill out these two lines,
select “Engine”,
and then select Next

Attach the video and parts list to the Preauthorization Form.
7.
After submitting the Preauthorization Form with the attached video and parts list, call
the PCC at 800-973-9992 (opt 1) for repair pre-approval to replace:

The short engine assembly (with oil and oil filter, coolant, etc).
