SUBJECT:
GEN-2 and GEN-3 - 3.0L Oil Filter Cartridge Identification Differences
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin highlights the design differences in the oil filter cartridges used in the GEN-2, and
GEN-3 3.0L diesel. As well as potential issues that can arise should the incorrect filter be used in
each application.

NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles within the following markets/countries: North
America and EMEA.
NOTE: This bulletin applies to the listed vehicles above equipped with the 3.0L Turbo Diesel
Engines (Sales Codes EXF, EXN, EXO, EXJ or EXH).
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Although similar in design, the oil filter cartridges used on the GEN-2 and GEN-3 3.0L diesel
engines are different in design. Interchanging them may result in premature engine damage over
time.

DISCUSSION:
There are two generations of the 3.0L V6 diesel engine found in our vehicles today. The Generation
2, or GEN-2 as it is most commonly referred to, is found in 2014-2019 WK (Jeep Grand Cherokee)
and DS RAM 1500 Classic) vehicles, while the Generation 3, or GEN-3, is found in the 2020 and
newer DT (RAM 1500) and JL (Wrangler).
There are several design changes between the GEN-2 and GEN-3 engines, including the oil filter
cartridge. These filters are similar in appearance, however, they are different in design, and can
lead to engine damage should the incorrect filter be used in each engine.
NOTE: Although you may be able to remove the filter element from the cap on the GEN-3
design filter, it is designed to be replaced as a set. DO NOT remove the oil filter
element from the cap when servicing any oil filter on a GEN-3 engine.
The key differences between GEN-2 and GEN-3 engine oil filter cartridge assemblies include
(Fig. 1) :
• GEN-2 oil filter element replaced separate from the cap. While GEN-3 is meant to be replaced
as a cap and element in one.
• Length of the oil filter element.
• Bypass valve integrated into the GEN-3 filter cap and element instead of the filter housing on
GEN-2.
• New clamping fittings in the cap on GEN-3 designed to capture the element.

If a GEN-2 engine design filter element is used in a GEN-3 engine filter cap, or the GEN-3 engine
element is used in a GEN-2 engine filter cap, it will lead to unfiltered oil to be circulated through the
engine leading to premature wear (Fig. 2) :
• Correct fitment of the cartridge in green.
• Incorrect fitment of the cartridge RED X.

Damage will occur to the incorrect oil filter cartridges when installed into the wrong cap (Fig. 3) .
