94 Headlights may not turn off during daylight hours 94 21 39 2063739/1 June 23, 2021. Model(s) Year VIN Range Vehicle-Specific Equipment All 2018 - 2022 All Not Applicable Condition When the light switch is in the “AUTO” position, the headlights are switched off later than expected or not at all during daylight. Technical Background When the sun is low in the sky (particularly during winter) and especially if the sun is also behind the vehicle (Figure 1), it is possible that the light sensor is within the vehicle’s shadow (Figure 2). Figure 1. Sun trajectory in relation to the vehicle’s sensor. In such cases, the sensor detects a lower ambient brightness than perceived by the driver. In this case it is possible that the headlights are not switched off as expected. Figure 2. Close-up of the sensor’s location. Page 1 of 2 © 2021 Audi of America, Inc. All rights reserved. In addition to this, when the sky is clear/blue there is no cloud cover to reflect the sun’s radiation back; this leads to a lower infrared value being measured at the sensor and intensifies the scenario described. Production Solution Not applicable. Service Note: The only possible way to minimize the occurrence of this situation which complies with legal requirements is to change the switch-on point of the headlights to “late” in the MMI settings.
