Document Information Location: Powertrain - Engine Topic: Engine Oil Leak Condition: Permanent / Intermittent Diagnostic Trouble Codes: N/A Measure When attempting to identify an engine oil leak, the use of a leak trace product which is mixed with the engine oil to help identify the source of the leak can now be used. An oil leak detection dye must be sourced locally, and the following guidelines must be considered, along with the product manufacturer's guidelines: • Before adding the leak trace product to the engine, carry out an engine oil level test and record the result • The engine oil must then be drained following the “Drain/Fill – Engine Oil” segment of SIS and record the amount drained • Mix the used engine oil with the recommend volume of leak detection dye as per the product guidelines. Note if the drained engine oil is unfit to reuse, replace with new • Refill and set the level of the engine oil with the pre-mixed dye as per SIS instruction • Start the engine and carry out a road test if necessary to ensure the leak trace fluid is circulated adequately enough inside the engine to become effective in tracing oil leaks • Use a suitable flashlight to carry out the oil leak inspection. An active leak should be fluorescent and easily identifiable under the ultraviolet/blue light • After the leak tracing investigation and any remedial work has been completed, the leak trace dye can remain in the oil system unless the product used specifies differently Care Point: Please record which leak detection dye product was used on the TR or Job Card.
