SUBJECT: Manual Transmission Shifter Noise OVERVIEW: This bulletin involves greasing or replacing the manual transmission rear shifter bushing. MODELS: 2009 - 2014 (LC) Dodge Challenger 2015 - 2016 (LA) Dodge Challenger NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles within the following markets/countries: NAFTA. NOTE: This bulletin applies to vehicles built on or before Feburary 11, 2016 (MDH 0211XX) equipped with a 5.7L Engine (Sales Code EZC), a 6.1L Engine (Sales Code ESF), 6.2L Engine (Sales Code ESD), or a 6.4L Engine (Sales Code ESH) and a Six Speed Manual Transmission (Sales Code DEC). SYMPTOM/CONDITION: Customers may experience a clunk, squeak, or similar noise heard from center console area while shifting. DIAGNOSIS: If a customer describes the symptom/condition listed above, perform the Repair Procedure. PARTS REQUIRED: Qty. Part No. Description 1 68292259AA Bushing - Shifter Linkage - Manual Trans 1 05019061AB Nye 880 Lubricant (Grease) 21-020-16 -2- REPAIR PROCEDURE: 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. Place transmission shifter in neutral. 3. Using a suitable trim stick, separate the shifter boot with bezel (1) from console (2) (Fig. 1). Fig. 1 Shifter Boot 1 - Shifter Boot 2 - Console NOTE: It is not necessary to remove the shift lever/knob from the linkage. -34. Remove the shifter bushing retaining nut (1) from closure panel (2) (Fig. 2). Fig. 2 Shifter Retaining Nut 1 - Nut 2 - Closure Panel 5. Lift the vehicle on a hoist. 6. Using a suitable jack, support the transmission. 21-020-16 21-020-16 -4- 7. Remove the four transmission crossmember mount bolts (2) from crossmember (1) (Fig. 3). Fig. 3 Crossmember Mount 1 - Crossmember 2 - Bolts 8. Using jack, lower rear of transmission enough to gain access to the rear shifter bushing (Fig. 4). Fig. 4 Bushing On Shifter Rod NOTE: If shifter bushing is defective, replace just the bushing. It is not necessary to replace the entire shifter linkage. -5- 21-020-16 9. Remove and inspect shifter bushing (Fig. 5). Is the bushing inner sleeve (1) separated from the outer housing (2)? a. YES >>> Replace the bushing. Continue to Step #11. Fig. 5 Bushing Separation 1 - Bushing Inner Sleeve 2 - Housing b. NO >>> Apply Nye 880 grease to bushing and rear shifter rod (Fig. 6). Continue to Step #10. Fig. 6 Bushing Greased 21-020-16 -6- 10. Install bushing (2) onto rear shifter rod (1) (Fig. 7). Continue to the Step #13. Fig. 7 Shifter Rod And Bushing Greased 1 - Shifter Rod 2 - Bushing 11. Apply Nye 880 grease to new bushing and rear shifter rod. 12. Install bushing (2) onto rear shifter rod (1) (Fig. 7). Continue to next step. -7- 21-020-16 CAUTION: Failure to install rubber grommet lip above tunnel plate may result in a sealing issue. 13. Install shifter bushing stud (1) into tunnel plate from below. Make sure that the shifter linkage double-lip rubber grommet is installed so that the grommet has one lip (2) above the tunnel plate and one lip below the tunnel plate opening for proper sealing (Fig. 8). Fig. 8 Rubber Grommet 1 - Stud 2 - Grommet Lip 14. Using jack, raise the transmission into position. 15. Install the crossmember mount with four bolts. Torque bolts to specification. Refer to 21 - Transmission and Transfer Case/Manual, Specifications. 16. Remove jack supporting the transmission. 17. Lower the vehicle. 18. Install the shifter bushing retaining nut to the closure panel. Tighten nut to 19 N·m (14 ft. lbs.). 19. Install the shifter boot with bezel to the console. 20. Connect the negative battery cable. 21-020-16 -8- POLICY: Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.
