GROUP STEERING DATE Technical Service Bulletin SUBJECT: SEPTEMBER 2023 NUMBER 23-ST-004G-1 MODEL(S) SEE BELOW STEERING UNIVERSAL JOINT NOISE INSPECTION AND GREASE APPLICATION This TSB supersedes 23-ST-004G to add the op code and service procedure information for G90 (RS4) vehicles equipped with an electric supercharger (E-SC). Description: This bulletin describes the procedure to inspect the steering universal joint dust cover for noise, and if necessary, apply grease on certain Genesis vehicles. TSB #: 23-ST-004G-1 Page 2 of 12 SUBJECT: SUBJECT: STEERING UNIVERSAL JOINT NOISE INSPECTION AND GREASE APPLICATION Service Procedure Overview: Dust Cover Noise Inspection Is noise present? No Yes Remove Crash Pad Lower Panel & Knee Airbag Remove U-joint Upper Remove foreign materials from humidity unit of sliding bearing Apply grease evenly by pushing dust cover up & down Move dust cover up & down at least 5 times Check for noise, then reinstall. Complete Inspection Procedure: 1. With the ignition ON (engine running if applicable), turn the steering wheel left/right repeatedly and listen for any abnormal noises around the universal joint dust cover. Refer to the videos below for inspection of universal joint dust cover noise. TSB #: 23-ST-004G-1 Page 3 of 12 SUBJECT: SUBJECT: STEERING UNIVERSAL JOINT NOISE INSPECTION AND GREASE APPLICATION Service Procedure: STUI This TSB includes Repair validation photos. Refer to the latest Digital Documentation Policy for requirements. i Information For G90 (RS4) vehicles equipped with electric supercharger (E-SC), the 48V battery pack must be removed to gain access to the 12V battery. Follow the procedures below to disconnect the 12V battery. Other than this exception, the rest of the procedures in this TSB apply to all models listed, including G90 (RS4) E-SC vehicles. 12V Battery Disconnection for G90 (RS4) equipped with electric supercharger (E-SC): 1. Center the steering wheel and the front wheels pointed straight ahead. Record customer’s radio presets, then turn off the ignition switch. Wait at least 3 minutes before continuing. 2. i Information Centering the steering wheel provides a reference point when disconnecting and reattaching the steering universal joint. The steering u-joint is “keyed” on both sides, allowing only one orientation of installation. Remove the 48V battery system assembly (BSA) by following the procedures described in the service manual: Engine Electrical System -> 48V Battery System -> Battery System Assembly (BSA) -> Removal and Installation TSB #: 23-ST-004G-1 Page 4 of 12 SUBJECT: SUBJECT: 3. STEERING UNIVERSAL JOINT NOISE INSPECTION AND GREASE APPLICATION With the BSA removed, the 12V battery is accessible. Disconnect the battery negative (-) terminal. Continue to the Crash Pad Lower Panel and Knee Airbag Removal service procedures. Battery Negative Terminal Tightening Torque: lb-ft 6.5 lb-in 78 N.m 8.8 Crash Pad Lower Panel and Knee Airbag Removal: i Information The procedure in this TSB is based on the Shop Manual for G80 (RG3) vehicles. For detailed procedures for each vehicle please refer to the applicable Shop Manual. TSB #: 23-ST-004G-1 Page 5 of 12 SUBJECT: SUBJECT: 1. STEERING UNIVERSAL JOINT NOISE INSPECTION AND GREASE APPLICATION Center the steering wheel and the front wheels pointed straight ahead. A Record customer’s radio presets, then turn off the ignition switch and disconnect the battery negative (-) cable. Wait at least 3 minutes. Remove the L/H front door body side weather strip (A). Battery Negative Terminal Tightening Torque: lb-ft 6.5 lb-in 78 N.m 8.8 i Information Centering the steering wheel provides a reference point when disconnecting and reattaching the steering universal joint. The steering u-joint is “keyed” on both sides, allowing only one orientation of installation. ! CAUTION For EV vehicles, disconnect the service interlock connector and wait 3 minutes before continuing to work on vehicle. See applicable Service Manual for details. TSB #: 23-ST-004G-1 Page 6 of 12 SUBJECT: SUBJECT: 2. STEERING UNIVERSAL JOINT NOISE INSPECTION AND GREASE APPLICATION Remove the crash pad L/H side cover (B) using a trim removal tool. ! CAUTION Be careful not to injure your hands when removing the cover. B NOTICE Be careful not to damage parts during removal. 3. Loosen the mounting screws and remove the crash pad lower panel assembly (C). i Information Be sure to replace any damaged clips with new ones during reassembly. 4. C Press the lock pin to remove all connectors (D) attached to the crash pad lower panel. D TSB #: 23-ST-004G-1 Page 7 of 12 SUBJECT: SUBJECT: 5. STEERING UNIVERSAL JOINT NOISE INSPECTION AND GREASE APPLICATION Unclip the diagnostic connector (E) by pressing the locking pin and then remove the crash pad lower panel. E 6. Remove the knee airbag retaining bolts (F) and then remove the knee airbag assembly. Knee Airbag Mounting Bolt Tightening Torque: 7. lb-ft 7.3 lb-in 91 N.m 9.8 F Remove the knee airbag connector (G) and foot light connector (H) attached to the knee airbag assembly. H G TSB #: 23-ST-004G-1 Page 8 of 12 SUBJECT: STEERING UNIVERSAL JOINT NOISE INSPECTION AND GREASE APPLICATION SUBJECT: Universal Joint Removal and Grease Application: 1. Remove the column shaft fixing clip (A) and loosen the universal joint upper fastening bolt (B). Information i Only remove the wiring fixing clip if it interferes with the universal joint upper fixing bolt. B Information i A Centering the steering wheel provides a reference point when disconnecting and reattaching the steering universal joint. The steering u-joint is “keyed” on both sides, allowing only one orientation of installation. 2. Loosen the universal joint upper fastening bolt (C) and remove the universal joint upper from the steering column and the steering shaft. Universal Joint Bolt Tightening Torque: lb-ft 26 N.m 35 i C Information Some models may require removal of engine cover and/or air filter housing to access the universal joint upper fastening bolt (C). See applicable Service Manual procedures for details. TSB #: 23-ST-004G-1 Page 9 of 12 SUBJECT: SUBJECT: 3. STEERING UNIVERSAL JOINT NOISE INSPECTION AND GREASE APPLICATION Remove the universal joint dust cover nuts (D) and then the universal joint upper. i Information For more details on removing the universal joint refer to the applicable Shop Manual for each vehicle. D D Dust Cover Bolt Tightening Torque: 4. lb-ft 7.3 lb-in 88 N.m 9.8 Clean the universal joint shaft with a cloth to wipe off foreign substances and grease. i Information Move the dust cover up and down to help remove foreign materials and grease. Clean Foreign Materials in this Area Noise may recur if all foreign materials and grease are not removed. 5. Apply approximately 5 cc of grease (about a teaspoon) evenly to shaft upper area (F). Then push the dust cover upwards. Move the dust cover (H) up and down more than five times to ensure it operates smoothly and there is no noise before reinstallation. Move up and down >5 times After grease application is complete, install all components in reverse order of removal. i Information Before installation, check for noise in the universal joint. When installing, check the alignment of the handles and insert them into the steering column and steering joint. H NOTICE Be sure to replace the Universal Joint Lock Bolts with new ones (2 each). STUI Using STUI, take a photo of the cleaned and greased universal joint dust cover assembly with the last 6 digits of the VIN and the date of repair on a piece of paper. Example of acceptable STUI photo Upload the photo to STUI. 7. Reconnect the negative battery cable and interlock connector (if applicable). 8. Input the customer’s radio stations. 9.
