Airbag light illuminates. Was told by dealership it is a problem with an electric circuit inside the seatbelt buckle and that it can lead to problems with airbag. Checked online and saw many, many Hyundai Sonata 2006 and 2007 users complaining of the same problem. On the Hyundai paperwork they wrote: " scanned and found code B1701 driver seat belt buckle shorted needs driver seat belt buckle parts and labor". *js

2007 HYUNDAI SONATA with 34151.0 miles

I purchased a used 2007 Hyundai Sonata on 5/29/2009 with 26,923 miles from gettel Hyundai, sarasota florida. I took it back to the dealership on 12/14/09 (34,151 miles) because the air bag light remained on. They found B1706 error (the passenger seat belt buckle resistance was high) so they replaced the passenger seat belt buckle assembly with no charge. On 6/8/12 (61,000 miles) i took the car back to the dealership for the same problem. The technician found codes: B1448, B1701 and B1706.The repairs were not cover by warranty and would cost $800. I declined the work. Before i left they told me that the airbags may not deploy if i were in an accident. Last month i found out that there was a recall of 2007 Hyundai Sonata back in april 2008 to replace the airbag sensor in the passenger seat cushion which caused the airbag light to remain on. Today (7/18/2014), (91,000 miles) i took my car in to the dealership for the recall repair and they told me the problem was with the front passenger cushion airbag sensor and with both seat belt buckle sensors. They will ship the front passenger cushion seat to california to fix the airbag sensor problem for free but it would cost $630 to replace both seat belt buckle assemblies. The service manager said if i declined to replace both seat belt sensors that the airbags would not deploy if i ever get into an accident. Well, i cannot afford the repair. It is a sad situation. Hyundai must know by now there is a problem with the seat belt assembly, it is all over the internet. It seems to be all about money and that Hyundai is paying for the cost of recall repairs for the seat cushion sensor by charging folks to have the seat belt assemblies replaced. I'm sure some lawyer will find out about this problem and find people injured due to the seat belt assembly malfunctions and file a lawsuit. I just hope no one dies because of it.

2007 HYUNDAI SONATA with 34089.0 miles

I have been having ongoing problems with the front driver and passenger seat belts, since i first noticed that the air bag light was on constantly. This first happened in 2010, when the mileage was 34089, and then again in 2011, when the mileage was 40356. The cause for this that was listed on the repair bill was, scan test found code B1701, buckle assembly open short. I was at the dealer for the same problem on 11/11/13, when my car's mileage was 57912. At that time, i was told both buckles had to be replaced. I was told this was not covered under the warranty. I argued that my car had less than 60,000 miles and should still be under warranty. I was told it was not because it was purchased in nov. 2006. When i asked why this is constantly happening, i was told by the advisor, "it happens." (?) what he should have told me, was to leave the car with them to diagnose the problem further. I told the advisor i couldn't afford the repairs at that time, so refused to have the buckles replaced. I don't see what replacing the buckles would do, if there is an open short that is causing them to shorten out. After reading all the complaints from owners of the 2007 Hyundai Sonata, for the same issue, how can there not be safety recall regarding this issue? There is no guarantee the airbags will deploy in an accident while this problem exists . Does someone have to be seriously injured or killed before action is taken? .... Updated 08/05/14 *bf updated 08/18/2014 *js ...Updated01/07/15 *bf the consumer was involved in an accident. She stated the driver's air bag did not warrant deployment. However. The air bag located by her head should have deployed. Updated 01/13/15

2007 HYUNDAI SONATA

I took the car in for a recall on the ocs and the dealer found two fault codes B1701 and B1706 indicating that both passenger and drivers side belt pretensioners resistance is too high.I see there are many 2006 and 2007 Sonatas with a similar issue. With the number of repeated complaints i think there should be a safety recall or some reimbursement for repairs !!!!!!!!!!!!

Upon starting the vehicle, the dashboard "check airbag" light was constantly illuminated. Took vehicle to the dealer (23jul08) where they diagnosed code B1701 and replaced the front drivers seat belt buckle assembly. At 43,340 miles (03feb09) i needed the passenger seat belt buckle assembly (B1706 code) replaced. At 57,106 miles (06nov09) i needed the drivers seat belt buckle replaced (code not documented by dealer). Now (19dec12) the "check airbag" light is lit again (103,121) and the codes B1701 ad B1706 both show up. Most likely replace both driver and passenger seat belt buckle assembly. An unbelievable number of seat belt buckle replacements in the life of this vehicle. Since seat belt issues like this illuminate the "check airbag" indicator light, i have to believe this is a safety factor related problem.

2006 HYUNDAI SONATA with 135681. miles

In the mid of april, i received a extended warranty letter from Hyundai for my "air bag" light that has been on. It was for the air bag light due to resistance within the connector for the front seat belt buckle. On april 27, 2015 i scheduled my first appointment at savannah Hyundai. On invoice it stated: 135681 check and found history codes B1701 drivers seat buckle pretensioner resistance high b176 passenger seat buckle resistance clear codes no codes reset. I was told the problem was fixed. As i drove off the service lot, my air bag light went back on. On may 4, 2015, i went in for another diagnosis and was told that they needed my car to stay at the shop and they gave me a rental. They said they needed to send my seat off to be fixed. It was a few days that they had my car. On that invoice it stated: check air bag system for codes B1701 and B1706 driver and passenger front seat belt buckle pretensioner resistance high found service bullentin 15be002 install tie strap on driver and passenger seat belt buckle pretensioner connectors. On june 22, 2015 i came in savannah Hyundai once again because my air bag light warning came back on. I was told that my warranty was already extended was no longer under warranty and i would have to pay out of pocket if i wanted to fix this problem with my car. Which i had the extended warranty and had no idea why they were fighting with me with this. Fix the safety issue! On invoice it was noted that the tsb for pretensioner connectors were already performed and that the vehicle needs passenger buckle pretensioner and the tsb does not mention any warranty covering the replacement, only the zip tie installation. I called corporate and on may 29, 2015, they ordered the passenger seat buckle pretensioner and supposedly they fixed the issue. Today is july, 15, 2015 and my air bag warning lamp is on once again. I am very disappointed.

2006 HYUNDAI SONATA

Airbag light remained on took it to the dealer 2 years ago (estimate), they reset the sensor and fiddled with the cable under the seat. In august of 2011 the light came back on and remained on. Took it it the dealer who scanned the codes which read "B1701" and "B1706" airbag resistance too high from the seat buckles. The dealer replaced the driver and passenger buckle at my cost. Mileage 62,966 there seems to be a high incidence of this occurring and should be investigated.
