2011 KIA SORENTO with 88000.0 miles

The airbag light came on in my vehicle and disabled the entire system. I took it to the Kia dealership and they diagnosed it, and found out it was disabled due to an electric field sensor that is sensitive to all kinds of electronics. The technical service bulletin is tsb: bod 072. It has in there that "if certain electronic devices such as cellular phones, laptop computers, inverters, dvd players, radio transmitters, gps navigation systems, satellite radio systems, video games, and mp3 players are put on/around a passenger seat cushion (including in the seatback pocket) or if liquid is spilled on the seat cushion, the airbag warning lamp may illuminate with dtc B1447, B1448, B1764, or B1767" to me, this is a huge safety risk, as someone might have a cell phone on them or too close, and it disables the airbag system. This is for Kia Sorento (xm) 2011 to current, Kia optima (mg) 2009, 2010, and Kia rio (jb) 2010 to current.

Airbag warning light intermittently going on and off for several days. Brought it to mechanic, they cleaned the wires and plugged everything back in, light went off. The next day the warning light came back on, now constantly on. Able to bring it back to mechanic at a later date and it was diagnosed as passenger lower seat air bag sensor failed and needs to be replaced (code B1448). This is the same issue that was recalled in Kia Rios from 2006-2008. The recall took place in 2012, so the company should have recalled the part for all years up until the recall took place. This is a safety issue that should be addressed immediately by Kia.

The airbag light on my Kia Spectra stays on and the Kia dealership quoted me $1600 for the B1448 code which is passenger seat mat occupancy sensor or something like that, and my car is under 80000 miles. I think that amount is really high for a senor to fix and Kia should fix and recall the airbag issue since it is a high risk for the safeties of american lives. Nhtsa should make Kia recall the airbag issue. Thank you

I noticed investigation: pe 15-031 where the ocs seat sensor mat is failing on a number of Kia Spectra models. My airbag light came on a few weeks ago so i too the car to the dealer and they charged me $100 to determine the ocs seat sensor mat was bad. Diagnostic code B1448. They told me it would be about $1500 to replace the entire passenger seat to fix the problem. Needless to say i have not gotten the problem fixed. The vehicle only has 52,000 miles on it and until about 3 years ago when my wife started riding to work with me i rarely ever had anyone in the front passenger seat so the mat shouldn't have seen much use. As of today your odi resume says there were 43 complaints on this issue but you can change that to 44 if you would like. Something as important as a passenger airbag system should not be susceptible to inferior parts like this.

Airbag light came on and won't go off. Took to independent mechanic stated error message B1448 is failure of passenger seat airbag sensor. I was informed that this is a very expensive repair but he thinks there is a recall. I called Hyundai- they informed me there is no recall. The vehicle was in an accident and nothing happened that should have caused the sensor to go bad. I am now afraid that the airbags may not deploy as needed in this car

2009 Kia Rio lx: while driving around town at 20mph and having 26,875 miles in the od, the airbag red light turned on and the passenger air bag light started to blink on the instrument panel. The vehicle was driven to an autorized Kia dealer where it was diagnosed using a kds having 26,927 miles, finding 3 codes: B1448 ocs mat defect, B1513 buckle switch open short passenger side, B1511 buckle switch open short driver side. Dealer said that there were no recalls or reports from Kia on this complaints for 2009 Kia Rio and decided to not replace the parts under warranty. They recommended to replace both the driver and passenger buckle switch and the passenger mat seat for a total charge of $1,700. The vehicle is used by its original owner, never have been involved in any crash events, have low mileage and stills under the 10years/100,000 miles warranty offered by Kia.

The air bag warning light activated and stayed lit. Hyundai service advised there would be a diagnostic fee merely to test where the problem might be. Repair could cost, according to past experience of the service manager,in the neighborhood of $1,400. It is my understanding that the vehicle will not pass inspection with a lit air bag warning light. I took the vehicle to another mechanic who had access to a scanning computer. The code read: "B1448 ocs (occupant classification system) (mat failure)." the warning light was reset. A review of filed complaints discloses several other instances of this occurring: date of incident: 05/16/2014 nhtsa id number: 10592409 date of incident: 12/12/2013 nhtsa id number: 10556375 date of incident: 04/29/2013 nhtsa id number: 10509961
AIR BAGS,

2009 KIA OPTIMA

The airbag light come on at around 84000 miles. When the error code was read, it was consistent with faulty ocs mat on the passenger's side (B1448). It seems to be an extremely common problem of many Kia vehicles with potentially serious safety concerns, yet the manufacturer did not issue a recall. The only solution seems to be the replacement of the mat ($1700-2000), with absolutely no guarantee that it will not malfunction after 10 miles (the electric sensor of the mat can interfere with electronic devices nearby).

B1448 issue showing ocs mat defect. Red dash light saying "air bag" came on @104000 miles and remains on. Light came on while driving with no occupant in passenger seat. No accidents or airbag deployments. Dealer indicates no active recall however nhtsa shows "Hyundai recall no. 083. System which features an occupant classification system (ocs) in the right front seat. The purpose of the ocs is to disable the right passenger seat front air bag when it detects the presence of a child restraint system or small child in the right front seat. The right front air bag is disabled to prevent injuries to a child that may result from a right front air bag inflation during a crash. I have an appointment today but since dealer will check vin for active recalls, expect them to deny recall service and try to make me pay for repair. Had a notice back in 2019 saying to take vehicle to dealer to check which i did and without the benefit of a scan, they had someone sit in the seat to verify light extinguished but did no repair. My 13 year old daughter (weighing 85 pounds)would sit in seat and "airbag off light" would remain on when it should have extinguished and provided air bag protection. They told me the threshold was above my daughter's weight but would not tell me what the weight is supposed to be. I disagreed with their assessment and let them know. However, the dash airbag light moi was not lighting at that time but now is on. I believe the sensor is defective and computer is trying to determine whether anyone is in the seat or not.

My car only has 82,000 miles on it and i am the second owner. For some reason the airbag light came on. I received an extended warranty notification earlier this year in regards to seat buckle assemblies on 2006-2008 Sonatas, which applied to my car. At that time however, i had no issues with the airbag light but now the light has come on. I went to the dealer and they stated that my issue has nothing to do with the seat belt buckle however it has to do with a B1448 080 (occupant classification system) (mat defect) i have spent some time doing research and it appears that a number of people have been experiencing this issue. I am not sure whats going on here but i think we need to look into the air bag issue. I have been quoted a cost of $1,300 to fix this problem and i do not feel that this is acceptable and that the cost should not be pushed on to the consumer, given that it appears to be mat defect which probably stems from the manufacturer. I have also taken this car to the same dealer for service and all the records of service are available. I am just concerned that this air bag issue may be very serious.

During routine use, while a passenger was in the front seat and i was driving on the highway, the airbag warning light illuminated. The error code was B1448, which appears to be associated with a malfunctioning occupancy sensor. While there is a recall of other 2008 Sonatas for similar problems, the dealer and Hyundai claim that my vehicle is not covered under the recall. I am concerned that Hyundai has incorrectly excluded vehicles from this recall. This malfunction appears to result in the passenger airbag being disabled, which could increase the risk of injury to passengers. Please advise if there is anything that can be done to correct this issue for myself and others similarly impacted by the malfunction. The warning has not gone away, and reappears after being reset.

2008 HYUNDAI SONATA with 145000. miles

I would like to file a complaint due to a faulty ocs sensor on my 2008 Sonata (error code B1448). This is a known issue Hyundai initiated campaign 083 to address. In this case the dealership huffines Hyundai did fix the problem by sending the whole seat out to have the sensor reprogramed. However this same sensor failed again. The dealership claimed that they can't reprogram the sensor again and offered to fix it again at my cost (extremely high cost). They are claiming that under campaign 083 their responsibility is to only repair/reprogramming the ocs sensor once. This is a serious safety issue since this ocs sensor failed and the complete airbag system is compromised and won't activate in an accident. I escalated this issue to Hyundai corporate customer care resolution team and they echoed the same comments as the dealership. Their responsibility is to only to repair/reprogramming the ocs sensor once. I asked to have this escalated the next level and this person basically said no and he wouldn't escalate it. After doing some lengthy research there is no other safe way to have this fixed other than going through the dealership at high cost to me or any others. This is a known issue with the ocs sensor, Hyundai knows it's prone to failure. They don't replace the sensor, just reprogram the same faulty sensor and then won't fix it if it fails again. This seems to be a decision by Hyundai to put profits before customer safety. Why was this not a full government forced recall? Was Hyundai getting around the recall rules by issuing a campaign? Campaign 083 effected close to 400,000 vehicles.

The air bag light has illuminated on the dash cluster and the light for the passenger side airbags will some times come on and at other times will not, with a 200 pound adult in the passenger seat. I called Kia dealership and was told it would be $100 to check the code. The code indicates B1448 ocs failure - mat sensor. Dealership said there is only a five year 60,000 mile warranty on these parts. Problem is you can not replace just the part, you have to buy the complete seat bottom at a cost of $800 - $2,000 depending on the dealership that you speak with. This is a large cost to replace every 3 - 6 years (depending on age and mileage). I purchased a used 2007 Hyundai Sonata on 5/29/2009 with 26,923 miles from gettel Hyundai, sarasota florida. I took it back to the dealership on 12/14/09 (34,151 miles) because the air bag light remained on. They found B1706 error (the passenger seat belt buckle resistance was high) so they replaced the passenger seat belt buckle assembly with no charge. On 6/8/12 (61,000 miles) i took the car back to the dealership for the same problem. The technician found codes: B1448, B1701 and B1706.The repairs were not cover by warranty and would cost $800. I declined the work. Before i left they told me that the airbags may not deploy if i were in an accident. Last month i found out that there was a recall of 2007 Hyundai Sonata back in april 2008 to replace the airbag sensor in the passenger seat cushion which caused the airbag light to remain on. Today (7/18/2014), (91,000 miles) i took my car in to the dealership for the recall repair and they told me the problem was with the front passenger cushion airbag sensor and with both seat belt buckle sensors. They will ship the front passenger cushion seat to california to fix the airbag sensor problem for free but it would cost $630 to replace both seat belt buckle assemblies. The service manager said if i declined to replace both seat belt sensors that the airbags would not deploy if i ever get into an accident. Well, i cannot afford the repair. It is a sad situation. Hyundai must know by now there is a problem with the seat belt assembly, it is all over the internet. It seems to be all about money and that Hyundai is paying for the cost of recall repairs for the seat cushion sensor by charging folks to have the seat belt assemblies replaced. I'm sure some lawyer will find out about this problem and find people injured due to the seat belt assembly malfunctions and file a lawsuit. I just hope no one dies because of it.

Front passenger airbag is on all the time. Took car to dealer and was told it was code B1448 - ocs mat failed. Some type of sensor under passenger seat. Would cost $1,500 to replace. Kia corporate offered to pay for half of repair but technician said that there might still be problems with airbag system even after repair. (replaced front driver's seat about 18 months ago at same dealer for $600 because airbag light was on at that time too.) Kia mechanic warned that because the passenger airbag light was on none of the airbags would now work. Therefore, see car as being unsafe to drive. Believe recall on airbag system is justified.

Recently suddenly airbag light came on and it now stays on all the time after starting the car. When i start the car, it blinks once and then remain lit. I used the code reader to get the codes and it gave two codes for airbag system, B1102 and B1448. On further googling, the 1st code indicates low input voltage and 2nd one indicates passenger occupant detecting system fault. Now i am concerned to use the car as the air bag system is turned off .

Air bag light came on 2 weeks ago, technician said the code is B1448 passenger seat mat cushion sensor. I am told that all air bags are now disabled and this is a very expensive repair. I see several complaints on this issue in just the latest incident reports. This should be repaired by Hyundai at no cost to the consumer.

Airbag light on dash is illuminated and the code is B1448 which is associated with the passenger sensor mat being defective. We have had no accidents, but the mat sensor in the passenger sensor has gone bad causing the air bag light on the dash to stay on. The dealer was able to determine this by getting a B1448 code when diagnosing the issue. Many others have complained of this same issue with this and other Kia vehicles. The part is prohibitively expensive at approximately $1600 for parts and labor.

Car airbag warning light has been on intermittently while car was in factory warranty (bumper to bumper, 5 year 60k miles). Reported to dealer while within warranty, dealer only cleared it without investigating cause. Warning light intermittently on and off over the years, but never thought it a problem until 2018 ma state inspection would fail if airbag light on. Had code read at Hyundai dealership and came out as B1448, occupant classification mat defect. Researched and found same code was recalled in 2007, 2008 for sonata, but not for my Santa Fe. Contacted Hyundai usa and requested they replace it for free. They declined and blamed me for not further pursuing it while vehicle was within warranty.

The air bag light came on in my daughters 2006 Kia Spectra at 112,000 miles. We are the second owner and have only had the car for 5 months at the time this occurred. . I paid $163.96 to diagnose the problem at the Kia dealership. . I was told the error code was B1448 ocs mat defective. I was told the bottom portion of the front passenger seat needed to be replaced due to the faulty sensor at a cost of more than $1600. This is the same defect for which the 06-08 Kia rios were recalled - nhtsa campaign no. 12v244000. This recall should be extended to include the similar model year Kia Spectras as there are numerous complaints found. I wrote 7 letters to Kia corporate, i specifically wrote to their directors and those in higher management positions listed on their website. No one cared to respond back. The 1-800 number listed for consumer affairs closed my case and said that after the 5 years 60,000 miles the warranty is over and void and safety issues such as an air bag that doesn't deploy falls on the customer and is customer responsibility. My 17-year-old daughter drivers this car. We are the second owner and have had it for 5 months. I've been actively working to get this safety concern acknowledged by Kia for a month and a half. Customer safety isn't a concern for them after the warranty is up. This is frightening. . They offered me $150 to go towards the cost of repairs. Huge disappointment in both the car and the company. Kia needs to make right on their vehicles. A lifesaving feature such as an airbag should not have an expiration date. This is not a matter of consumer maintenance.

The car airbag light intermittently comes on. It does not seem to be related to anything in particular. A mechanic read code B1448 for a defective passenger side seat occupancy sensor. I had the codes pulled by independant mechanic and code B1448 showed indicating the seat mat sensor was defective . I went to Hyundai dealer in north hampton new hampshire. The dealer said they would have to diagnose the issue for $125 and it costs about 1400 to replace the mat , many people online in forums have the same issue . They were able to have this repai done .Its campaign 083 . I was told to contact Hyundai corporate by service employee at the dealership . Hyundai continued to claim my vin is not listed .This is not a recall but campaign .The campaign affects 2006 and newer Sonatas .The huyndai corporate employee said i csn have the car diagnosed and then they can submit a "request" to have corporate authorize the repair .Which would cost significant money . Others online had no problem getting this repair done free as its a known issue with the Sonata . While on highway, dash board air bag light illuminated in early april. Did not go out. Took it to dealer in early may, they gave me a code B1448. Said needed to have $2200 repair done. Found tech service bulletin on line that got the seat reprogrammed in mid-may at dealer cost. "fix" was to remove seat and send it back for reprogramming. Early june: now, both dash air bag light and flashing passenger seat light are on when no one is in the passenger seat. Only way to get the flashing to stop is to hook the seat belt. Second visit to dealer documented that code is the same for the dash light. No explanation for passenger light. No path forward from Hyundai corporate, according to dealer. Now what?.

Air bag light on dash came on and stayed on. Passenger air bag message on dash does not come on anymore after starting vehicle. I was informed that the nhtsa did not make them recall any other models and only if they were made by nhtsa would there be a recall and they would contact me if there ever was a recall. So after seeing other complaints i am asking the nhtsa to please include all Kia models in the recall. I have 93500 miles and was going on 7 years of trouble free driving with my Kia until now. Front passenger airbag seat occupancy sensor is faulty. This code is B1448 sensor/matt fault caused by matt wiring failure. This fault causes the passenger side airbag system to staff off, it also causes the passenger system to read that it does not have an occupant at all times. The main airbag computer reads the system fault and it disables the entire airbag system. No airbag protection at all, and Suzuki knows. Seams to be a common and known defect in the ocs and seat matt in the passenger seat. Suzuki and its dealers are unmoved by the danger that this brings to all its customers.

Was told that there is a tsb recall on this problem, but when i called Kia, they said that it was not for this model. However after looking up this problem on the internet, a lot of people with this car have had this problem. Not only is it bad enough that lots of people are complaining about this, but Kia says that they can't replace the sensor by itself, i would need to buy a new seat which would be $1600 dollars!!!! That's ridiculous. A problem such as this one should not be so expensive to fix. Did Kia put this sensor there so that we would have to pay almost 2 grand to fix a crappy electrical job? By the way this is not the only Kia around this year with this exact problem. Recall the Spectra5 too!!!!

There is a recall on my 2006 Hyundai Sonata for issue code: B1448 which means ocs mat defect and this made my dash air bag illuminate at times, meaning the airbag wouldn't have deployed in case of an accident. Fortunately, the Hyundai dealership shop did not charge me to replace the passenger seat since it is a recall. However, before they began to process the B1448 fix, another "safety" issue code came up on their diagnostic test saying "seat belt buckle pretensioner: driver resistance is too high" and the dealership told me that this is also causing the air bag light to illuminate, thus the airbag may not deploy. Since my car warranty has expired and there is no safety recall on this specific issue, i have to pay a big bill out of my own pocket to replace the buckle pretensioner. This is a safety issue and there should be a recall on this. No one should pay anything for a safety issue. Upon web researching there has been a good number of people that have the same issue but yet there is no recall yet.

The tech cleared the code and retested car and stated it is working as designed. Then at 83,000 miles the same light came on again. I took it back to the dealer who stated this time that there is a fault code set for the passengers side seatbelt latch. The latch side of the seatbelt needs to be replaced and it will cost $360. The tech also stated that the airbag system is disabled. There are numerous complaints from many Sonata owners regarding this same problem. There should be a recall as this is a major safety concern.

I noticed that my air bag warning light came on and stayed illuminated. I brought it to the dealer and was told that the passenger lower cushion sensor assembly needed to be replaced (for approx. $1,000). Was told that none of the airbags would work in a collision until it was replaced. Since i can't afford to replace it now, i have no airbags. (i also own a 2002 honda civic and honda just recently replaced both front airbags in a recall.) make sure that if you choose to buy a used Hyundai you're in a position to spend an extra $1000 if you want your airbags to work. You might want to have the dealer do a code check to be sure that the air bags are working. Then again, it could be fine today and a B1448 code tomorrow. It's sad that the government requires auto makers to install airbags, but they don't require that they work. Facing a $1000 air bag repair, i do not recommend buying a new or used Hyundai.

A recall for the Hyundai sonata (nhtsa campaign id number: 08v161000) which uses the same components in it's airbag sensory system has been issued for same code. Similar complaints have been reported for the Accent on this site and arfc.Org. Repairs or replacement of the sensor range from $800 - $1100. Srs (airbag) service reminder indicator came on. I went to an auto parts store and they ran an obdii report on a bosch scanner. A B1448 oc (occupant classification) - passenger sensor mat defect came back. This is the same problem that the 2006-2008 Hyundai sonatas have a recall on. The front passenger seat sensor, to detect a child seat or adult in the seat, may recognize a small adult as a child seat. If this happens and the front passenger air bag is deactivated, the risk of injury in a crash may be increased. I went to Hyundai motor america headquarters in fountain valley, california at 3:45 on january 17, 2019 and left my contact information on a card at the front desk regarding this problem. I was told that i would be contacted but to date have had no reply from hma.
