• Recall 34387 [USA]: In the event of a crash, air bag deployment may not occur, increasing the risk of injuries to the driver and/or front passenger.
  On certain passenger vehicles, incompatible electronic air bag system processors may have been installed.

• Recall 35066 [USA]: If stalling were to occur, the driver would be unable to maintain vehicle speed or accelerate, increasing the risk of a crash.
  On certain passenger vehicles, under certain environmental conditions, a vapor lock in the fuel pump could occur causing the engine to stall. If this were to happen, the engine would not be able to be restarted for approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

• Recall 35197 [USA]: Consequently, a loss of tire pressure, or a tire failure, could occur. depending on traffic conditions and the driver's reactions, this could lead to a crash.
  On certain vehicles equipped with 18" tires, it is possible that the tire has been damaged during the mounting process to the rim.
  dealers will unseat the tire from its rim, inspect for any damage, and then reseat the tire to its rim. If inspection reveals that a front tire has incurred damage during the mounting process, it will be replaced. Owner notification began july 14, 2003. Owners should contact bmw at 1-800-831-1117.

• Recall 57507 [USA]: If the connection detaches, the protection provided by the safety belt is likely to be impaired, and serious injuries to the driver and/or front passenger could occur that might otherwise be mitigated.
  On certain passenger vehicles, the connection of the safety belt buckle to the steel rope of the tensioner does not meet bmw specifications. In severe frontal crashes, this connection can detach.
  dealers will inspect both front safety belt tensioner and buckle assemblies, and if necessary, replace these parts. Owner notification began march 19, 2003. Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact bmw at 1-800-831-1117.

• Recall 2004123 [Canada]: Fuel supply
  Certain vehicles contain a defect involving the electric fuel pump. Under certain environmental conditions, for example, driving during high outside temperatures in combination with high altitudes (over 5,000ft.), vapor lock in the fuel pump could occur. This could cause the engine to stall. If this were to happen, the engine could be unable to be restarted for approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Correction: dealer will install a resistor in the electrical line leading to the fuel pump. This will reduce the power output of the fuel pump and preclude an occurrence of vapor lock.

  Odi has evaluated the sticky steering condition, which included reviews of complaints and warranty claims, interviews and surveys of owners of complaint vehicles, road tests of complaint vehicles, and a review of bmws engineering and test data.Odi found the sticky steering condition does not result in a significant steering effort, thus the impact on the drivers ability to control the vehicle does not appear to be significant.A safety-related defect trend has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, this investigation is closed.The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists.The agency will monitor the issue and reserves the right to take future action if warranted by the circumstances.See the attached report for additional information.In addition, during this investigation, odi became aware of allegations of failure or loss of electric power-assisted steering on the subject vehicles.As a result, odi is separately reviewing this issue to determine whether additional agency action is needed.

On hot days the steering becomes sticky like there is a catch. It will also pull to one side or the other making it very dangerous to drive especially on the interstate.

I just purchased z4. Did not notice any problem during test ride. On my way home during purchase steering became an issue. The car would be driving fine then what i would a dead spot would appear. The steering wheel will suddenly shift left or right what seems a few inches. This causes driver (me) to compensate to avoid going in ditch or crossing a lane or getting into an accident. This happened many times on my 70-mile trip home.

Additionally, at right about the straight position of the steering wheel the steering will stick (consistently fighting the wheel to stay centered). Staying straight is nearly impossible as you constantly battle the resistance back and forth to keep the vehicle moving in a straight line. It is quite disconcerting and has almost resulted in me side swiping oncoming vehicles on several occasions. I have learned that this is a common problem that bmw never addressed. Researching the matter i've learned that a steering column replacement and labor would be in the $3000-4500 range and the problem would likely reoccur in the future due to faulty design. Worse, as most people in my position are unable to perform a repair at that cost, i've found numerous people manipulating their steering columns with mixed success ultimately creating an even more dangerous potential situation. These methods include drilling into the steering column and adding greases and lubricants that were not designed to work with the vehicle. This is a well-known problem, with no shortage of records and accounts establishing this isn't a "if it happens", but when it happens. Drive a vehicle with this problem, i dare you, and tell me it is not a major safety hazard. Disappointed. I'd appreciate if bmw would reach out to me and remedy the issue. There is no reason that a steering wheel, one of the most basic and necessary systems on a car to maintain control, should have been permitted to be defective with no remedy at the cost of the manufacturer. The lack of accountability by bmw and "do it yourself" remedies will undoubtedly result in injury or death if they have not already. I have a 2003 z4 with 25k miles. The steering wheel sticks while driving making it difficult to steer. Spoke with a bmw mechanic and was informed this is a known issue for this particular vehicle and that i will need to replace the steering column to correct the problem. The cost is $3000. Why is there not a recall??

When the car warms up or has been in the warm sun the steering sticks. This creates a dangerous issue where the steering wheel will pop over rather than smoothly turning. The problem creates and oversteering that is very dangerous at highway spreed and in traversing corners.

Convertible top motor is placed in a bad location by the manufacturer causing roof pump motor to cease and stop working. This is a safety issue because the top should be able to be put up due to inclement weather. My convertible roof won't go up or down right now. Hundreds of complaints online and bmw wants to charge over $2,000 to perform repairs gauging customers for their faulty designs.
