• Recall 68290 [USA]: Separation of the ball stud from the socket of the ball joint housing would allow the control arm to collapse and the wheel to fold in causing loss of steering control, possibly resulting in a crash.
  Qualis automotive is recalling certain aftermarket ball joints sold for use on certain passenger vehicles. The socket may have been excessively hardened which could cause it to crack near the retaining ring groove allowing the ball stud to separate under impact load. The subject ball joints were sold as four part numbers, d10945, d10946, g10945, and g10946. The affected control arms, d10945 and d10946, are stamped with the following dates on the ball joints: 134308, 135708, 100109, 102709, 104109, 105509, 107609, 108909, 110309, 113209, and 116609. The g10945 and g10946 are the same part as the d10945 and d10946 respectively. They are labeled differently depending on the aftermarket customer.

Correction: lower lateral arm ball joints will be inspected for wear and replaced as necessary with newly designed lower lateral arm ball joints.   The manufacturer reports above are based on daimlerchrysler¿s (dc) analysis of model year (my) 1998 (population = 356,384) and 1999 (population = 486,948) ja, jx and lh family subject vehicle data (earlier mys excluded).The population number includes all mys.The precise number of duplicates between odi and dc reports cannot be determined due to missing or incomplete information.The fatality incident involved an elderly person who attempted to stop a roll away vehicle and received fatal injuries.Odi also gathered information on my 1997-99 prowler vehicles in this investigation. The prowler vehicles were manufactured with a different design shifter mechanism (the shift lever is shorter).There are no complaints of prowler interlock failure in odi¿s database, and dc has received no reports either.The prowler is excluded from the recall scope.The investigation involved a condition where the interlock system could fail (or be made inoperative by the operator) during vehicle use, possibly inadvertently.The interlock system is required under fmvss 114.With the transmission in the park position and the ignition key off, the combined action of pressing the shift button and pulling the shift lever rearward may result in the operator overcoming the interlock system and cause the mechanical linkage of the system to disconnect.When this occurs, there is no overt indication to an operator that the system is defeated, and an increased risk of vehicle roll-away exists.Under recall 04v021, dc will replace damaged shift mechanisms, and will install on all vehicles a device which inhibits the operator¿s ability to overcome the interlock and defeat the system.Beginning with my 2000, dc incorporated a brake and transmission shifter interlock (btsi) system into the subject vehicles.Introduction of btsi involved design changes to the shift mechanism, one of which resulted in reduced mechanical advantage (rma) of the shift button.The rma shifter requires increased forces to overcome the interlock system, making the shifter less susceptible to damage.

I took my car to get diagnostic for smog. The shop i took it to smog smart explain they have dismateled my car claiming engine, coolant, and timing belt. They have removed parts and claim they contacted chrysler and its company states its repairs is not worth the vehicle. The engine claim, the coolant claim and timing belt they have made against the manufacture. The engine checked fine before dropping the car off. The car would stop due to heating the fuel running since the car had been a non op for 3 years andreason for smog. Tl* the contact owns a 1996 chrysler sebring. While driving approximately 45 mph, the vehicle failed to respond when the brake pedal was depressed. The contact crashed the vehicle into a ditch. There were no injuries. The independent mechanic repaired the brake chamber, both rear brake lines, and the adjuster; however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unavailable.

Brakes failed and immediately went to the floor when braking somewhat hard while hwy traffic was slowing quickly. If i hadn't pulled the emergency brake quickly, there is no telling what might have happened to my family and i. Brake lines rusted through. *ln

I have a 96 chrysler sebring convertible jxi and the seatbelts "lock" in the retracted stage at various times. Both belts lock and unlock at the same time. I don't know how this happens and have been told that i need new seat belts but i can't believe that both belts went bad at the exact same time, and that the release at the same time. I have read online that this is a common occurrence in this year and model of the sebring. *tr

Recall #750 front lower control arm ball joint alleged repaired 02-10-98. This is a new (10-08-09) recall. Due to my vehicle was at the dealer, it was asked if the numbers of the ball joints and control arms numbers could be checked to see if original chrysler or aftermarket quality parts were used. Though this is a serious safety issue, loss of steering, the service advisor advised i'd need to check the original repair order (02-10-98). The original owner is deceased. So i guess i should crawl under the car and look for wherever these parts are, let alone the numbers, or pay someone else to check them, or just hope chrysler had and used their own parts. *tr

The odometer and rpm gauge work intermittently like in complaint 10061946. Though the fuses look good, the fog lights and high beam flash do not work now since the above has been occurred. *tr

1996 chrysler sebring wheel came off while driving on the ohio turnpike. While the driver pulled off to the right berm, the wheel crossed the median and struck another vehicle. *kb according to the police report, the lug nuts sheared off. Ohio traffic crash report # 10-0734-90.

The air bags deployed and the contact was trapped in her vehicle. The air bags released debris that began burning her face. There was also a large cloud of smoke as if chemicals were being released from the air bags. She was transported to the hospital and a physician stated that she received second degree burns. The contact has a copy of the police report and pictures of the failure. The manufacturer concluded that that air bags were not manufactured with any hazardous substances. Vehicle is totally unmodified! While sitting at a light, i heard a pop (like a balloon popping) and smoke and flame burst from under the hood. Fire department observed fire began in the area of the fuel line and spread into the dashboard. Possible cause was electrical failure causing arc which compromised the rubber fuel hose. *tr

Wishing to install an infant car seat in back seat, discovered that no locks are present on the back seat seat belts allowing any passengers to be thrown from vehicle. This is especially dangerous in a convertible. *tr

Lower lateral arm broke on our 1996 chrysler sebring. Dealer and chrysler have refused to fix the car under recall. This is the 3rd major failure and inconvenience of this part. The last failure was 8 moths ago. There is clearly a safety issue here as well as a mechanical defect. *jb

My airbag warning light periodically comes on for approx 30 seconds and then goes off. On 10/12/06 i was driving the vehicle and it came on and off and then remained on. I immediately telephoned the nearest dealership (livonia chrysler jeep, michigan) and took the vehicle in. The light was on and the technician hooked up a hand held diagnostic machine and a "passenger squib open" code came up. I was asked to leave the vehicle. I subsequently received a telephone call stating that the airbag light went off and there were four stored inactive codes. However, since there were no active codes, the problem could not be diagnosed. I inquired if the vehicle was safe to drive and would my airbags work if in an accident or could the airbag deploy for no reason. The representative could not advise me. I stressed my concern but was told to drive the vehicle until the light came on again and to bring it back in. Well, that is what i did this last time. I must admit that the representative was very nice and tried to help, but honestly did not have the answers. On 10/16/06 i picked up the vehicle. No light was on. On 10/17/06 i telephone chrysler customer service and was instructed to go back to the dealership. I am very concerned with my safety, as well as my family's, and am getting the run around with no answers. I rely on the experts at dealership and do not understand how they can acknowledge there are trouble codes and not be able to advise if the vehicle is safe. Please help! I should also note that eventhough the vehicle is a 1996, there are only 18,396 original miles on it. *nm

Tl*the contact owns a 1996 chrysler sebring. While driving at an unknown speed, the engine warning light illuminated on the instrument control panel. The vehicle then immediately stalled. Several minutes later, the vehicle restarted. The dealer replaced the cam shaft sensor and the battery. The vehicle failed an emissions test due to smog. The dealer reprogrammed the pcm. On february 21, 2008, the vehicle had a second emissions test and failed again due to smog. The failure mileage was 167,000 and current mileage was 204,083.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 15 mph the front right tire flipped sideways, the front drive shaft sheered off the oil filter and knocked it from the manifold. This occurred on an icy road during normal braking without warning. The vehicle was pulled to the contacts home. The dealership and manufacturer was notified however, no repairs have been made.

Dt*: the consumer stated both tie rod ends fractured on two separate occasions. The first time, while backing out of the driveway, the front tires went in opposite directions and the vehicle would not move forward or backward. The tie rod end was replaced. The same failure occurred on the other side and the contact repaired the vehicle. Upon inspection, it was determined the sealed pivot joints were not lubricated and resulted in these failures. *jb

Acceleration problem. Going 35-40 in residential area, thought we were slowing down for stop light, acceleration pedal went to floor. Car sped up. Brakes would not stop the car. Emergency brake was pulled and car put into neutral. Stopped before reaching two cars ahead waiting to turn. *jb

I presently own a 1996 chrysler serbring convertible that was purchased new in 1996. The battery for this vehicle is located behind the front drivers side of the vehicle. In order to gain access the battery you must remove the front tire and then the shroud that covers the wheel well. My battery has been replaced three times since the date of purchase. The first time was on the day that the vehicle was purchased; the second time was in 1999 and most recently today; november 22, 2005. During the process of replacing the battery on 11/22 our mechanic found that the battery casing that holds the battery in place was totally corroded and needed to be repaired. The cause of this corrosion (according to my mechanic) is from battery acid and other elements. Additionally, the drivers side frame of the car was also damaged/corroded due to the battery acid and that the frame would need to be replaced/repaired as well and that the vehicle was not safe to drive. I spoke with chrysler corporation just prior to writing to you and they advised me that there was nothing that they could do because of the age of the vehicle; despite the fact that i truly believed that this situation was caused by extremely poor engineering of the vehicle. I have taken the liberty of writing to you because of 1) i believe that there are other chrysler sebring convertible that are experiencing the same problem that the drivers may be totally unaware of and 2) if in fact they are or could have in the future a corroded battery casing and more so a corroded frame. The potential of an accident due to the issues appears to be inevitable. Your help regarding this issue would be greatly appreciated. *jb

The passenger seat belt on my 96 sebring has locked up and can no longer be pulled out of the seat at all. I took it to the dealer and asked about a recall, but was told it would be "at least two hours labor, not counting parts and would be over $200 to fix). To me, this is clearly a defective product and a safety issue. I normally drive alone, so the belt got minimal use before becoming defective. I sent a detailed letter to daimler chrysler from their web site and got a very brief reply of "i'm sorry." there was no offer of help or suggestions to speak of. At any rate, it looks like it's going to cost me a few hundred dollars to get this fixed so that passengers in my car can ride in safety once again. *jb

My 1996 chrysler sebring convertible almost caught fire from the dash stereo speakers mid 10/05 .. Screeching noises came from my speakers and then smoke began to come out of them. I turned off the stereo and soon after went to my mechanic. When they turned my stereo on smoke came out of the dash speakers again. I asked them to pull the fuse so that it wouldn't happen again. On 2/16/06 i called chrysler. I received a letter from them dated 2/21/06 stating that they would not do anything about it because the time or mileage warranty had expired. On recall sights i have found where there were recalls for the same problem in slightly newer models. This could have ended in injury or even death to myself and my two nieces that i was driving to school that morning. I am hoping that you can help me have the problem corrected by chrysler. There are also other electrical problems and i've also had a few problems with the steering and timing belt. I await your reply. *jb

Dt: the contact could take vehicle out of park without pressing the brake. He received a recall notice of a safety defect. He notified the dealer, and they said the recall he got should have taken care of the problem. The dealership repaired the recall, but the problem still existed. On july 11, 2005 i drove from my home in bolivia, nc to dunn, nc (approx. 125 mi) to pick up my grandson & a friend. While parked in the parking lot of the crackerbarrell restaurant at the intersection of rt 421 & i95, i started the engine and leaned out the window to say goodbye to my daughter. Suddenly both front airbags exploded filling the car with smoke and fumes. All three of us immediately exited the automobile. I suffered a severe brused and cut right arm and brusing to the right side of my neck & shoulder and a twisted right knee. I was taken to the hospital in dunn by the paramedics & released. The children were not injured. Had the incident occurred five minutes later, we would have been travelling south on #421, a 2 lane hwy used mostly by 18 wheelers and other large trucks. No doubt i would not be here writing this report. I can't imagine being able to retain control of the car if the airbag had exploded in my face while travelling at 55 mph. The airbag on the passenger side exploded with such force that it broke the windshield. The airbag on the dirvers side completely broke off the cruise control mechanism on the right side of the steering column. A police report was filed with the dunn police department (case # oca 2005 01833). The car was left in the parking lot undisturbed until wednesday the 13th, when it was towed to martin's auto body shop on beach road in southport, nc. It remains there undisturbed. On july 15th a mr james williams, sent by chrysler, inspected the car. (file # 13779399). On july 19th state farm sent an inspector. (claim # 330713425, team #44). I am awaiting news from chrysler as to what action they will take to replace, repair or otherwise compensate me for the loss of this vehicle and trauma to me and the children.

Dt: june 30 2005 the left front ball joint broke while driving. The consumer was driving 35 mph. There was a noise, sparks were flying, and the consumer lost steering control and bounced off a curve. There were no warning lights on the vehicle. The vehicle was recently inspected in may and no problems were reported. There was a recall, but the consumer was not aware of it. The consumer noticed there was a corrosion problem with the ball joint. The consumer didn't have the recall number. The vehicle is now having repair work done. Chrysler is willing to pay the repairs. The bearings had to be replaced, the left front wheel bearing was replaced twice. *jb

Dt: consumer received nhtsa recall 04v021000. Checked vehicle, and consumer found that vehicle did have a transmission problem. Consumer took vehicle to dealer. Once consumer picked up vehicle from dealer found that vehicle would still come out of park without key in ignition. Consumer contacted the dealer again, and dealer told consumer that she would have to pay for a cable to be replaced. However, dealer did not fix the problem. Also, consumer contacted manufacturer, and manufacturer told consumer that vehicle could be taken to another dealer. However, if dealer felt that recall work was completed than dealer could be charged co a $35 inspection fee, and then charged for the repair if consumer decided to have it done. *ak

Dt:consumer started vehicle while in carport. He put the car reverse moved about 1 foot and the dash blew up. Consumer said it was so loud that neighbors heard it from inside their houses and came running out. Both air bags deployed and the consumer said that smoke bellowed out of the steering column. Parts of the car were blown all over the interior. Consumer says incident was like a bomb going off. Consumer thought that he had been car bombed. Consumer said that there was no physical contact to vehicle to cause air bags to deploy. Consumer says there are other witnesses available. Consumer says investigator that looked at vehicle told consumer that he had investigated 3 other such instances. *jb

Trunk springs for trunk lid no longer work. Have to hold trunk open manually. Springs are no longer available because of changes chrysler has made so i have to pay to have springs rewelded. Trunk lid has hit me in head on occasion.Why should i pay for rewelding because of your changes on something so simple

Purchased vehicle in apr 05 from friends. Without the key in the ignition, the button can be pressed and the shift lever moved. While running, the button can be pressed and the shift lever moved without having to put foot on the brake pedal. Vehicle brought in to dealer and recall c45 alleged to be completed 10-25-05. Due to my children now use the car, a return was made to a dealer 12-01-09 for recall. Invoice states "reinspect recall #c45." while waiting, service advisor appeared to discuss recall and state that i needed to replace the interlock cable. Invoice stated "did recall c45 replace shifter rod," "need to replace interlock cable, $227.00." so it appears after doing another shifter rod, maybe the recall should be for the interlock cable as in another complaint # 10126915. Though i said this was a recall and a safety issue, he repeated i'd have to pay for the interlock cable. About to leave, a long spring was found on drivers floor area. Service advisor was shown same and said a new one was put in, hopefully with a new shifter rod, though maybe that's the wrong fix for this safety defect. *tr

While driving 30 mph manual transmission went out of shift, and the ignition locked. Dealer stated they had done repairs under the recall, however the problem still exists. *ak

1996 chrysler sebring has problems with roof leaking, front passenger tire separating from the vehicle as well as problems with the transaxles floor shifter/park interlock which caused driver to hit nine cars and be ejected through the windshield. There was a recall regarding the park /neutral start switch being faulty. The consumer wants daimler chrysler to compensate her for another vehicle. *bf *nm

The engine mounts broke. Consumer was concerned that the engine will fall out while driving. *ak

The consumer received recall notice in 1999. Nhtsa's recall # 99v066003. When taken to get serviced, they did not service the vehicle, they only inspected it. The consumer was told that the ball joints where fine. Recently, the consumer was involved in an incident where he was driving on the highway at approximately 55 mph. The front left ball joint broke causing him to loose control of the vehicle, he was able to avoid an accident. He again took the vehicle to get serviced and was told that they would only cover the ball joints and not the additional damage. *jb

(1) headlamps not illuminating sufficiently. (2) the material used in the lenses for the headlamp assemblies on my 1996 chrysler sebring convertible have yellowed and fogged over to the point that the illumination factor has decreased to a totally unsafe level for night driving. This could result in failure to see hazards in time to circumvent. (3) notified daimler chrysler of this condition and it's safety impact. This condition should not occur on a major piece of equipment such as the headlamps. Their response was basically that they have no liability or responsibility to correct this problem. They informed me that i should replace the headlamps at my expense. The current cost for a single headlamp is $335.00 ea. I have the email correspondances that we have sent to each other if you need them. As of now this vehicle is not used for night time operation. I cannot afford to spend almost $700.00 to replace these headlamps. This type of equipment is required on all vehicles and is considered to be safety equipment.*ak

For about a year i have had an intermittent problem with the tachometer and odometer on my jxi. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. The dealership said this is a common problem with the 1996 and 1997 's and that i need a new circuit board at a cost of over $700.00. Not replaced yet.*ak

The vehicle's rh tie rod was extremely rusted and pitted. As a result the tie rod failed while the consumer was backing out of a parking space. *nm the consumer had both tie rods replaced. *tc *jb

Problems with ball joints on 1996 chrysler sebring.*mr the vehicle was recalled in dec 1997 and the dealer stated they were only required to visually inspect the front ball joints and elected to replace the left side only under recall #750. In nov 2002 the right front ball joint assembly fell apart without warning. *jb

While driving 70 mph vehicle stalled. The driver tried to restart the vehicle and was not able to do so. Vehicle was towed to a dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the wiring harness, electrical control module, and circuit breakers needed to be replaced, and replaced them. However, the problem recurred. *ak

When driving, the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was reported, the engine harness wiring had burned. *jb

Nhtsa campaign 00v421002; daimler chrysler issued a lower ball joint recall. This vehicle is not included in the recall. The consumer was driving 55 miles per hour when all of a sudden he heard a popping noise coming from the front of the vehicle. The consumer lost control of the vehicle before coming to a complete stop on the side of the road. The consumer took the vehicle to the shop and results showed that the lower ball joints needed to be replaced. *jb ball joint snapped and resulted in the wheel turning sideways. As a result the driveer lost control of the vehicle. When vehicle finally came to rest the tire was totally destroyed and under carriage sustained damage. *sb *nm

While driving the srs light came on. This indicates a failure in the air bag that could result in premature or none deployment of the air bag. The dealership was contacted and indicated that the air bag module needed to be replaced. *nm

While driving, the driver and passenger seat belts failed. The seat belts would retract back into the seat and failed to come back out. The consumer was unable to retrieve the seat belts in order to click them in to drive the vehicle. The consumer notified the dealer, and the dealer informed the driver that the seat belts had no life time warranty. *ak the mechanism resets itself overnight so the seatbelts were usable in the morning, but driving over a rough road surface would lock them again. *sc *jb

While merging into the interstate right front lower ball joint snapped off from the a- frame. Vehicle was towed to a repair shop. Mechanic determined that the problem was due to no lubrication/grease between the seating of the ball joints. *ak

Alarm system wiring shorted due to it rubbing against the car body. This caused the engine kill mechanism to activate the car would not start and the alarm could not be shut off. Repair shop had to cut and resplice the wires so that car would start.*ak

While the vehicle was parked the consumer noticed that the convertible top was unraveling at the seams. The consumer contacted the manufacturer. *nm *nm

While turning, the front passenger side lower ball joint failed. The consumer had the vehicle towed to a dealership. The dealership's mechanic repaired the problem once, but the consumer is still experienced having problems. Recall number 97v-201-000. Please provide more information. *la

Front lower ball joints wore out. As a result, a grinding sound was produced. *ak

Tie rod fell off. Started engine, proceeded to pull out of parking place and the tie rod fell off. Since chrysler now makes tie rods so that they cannot be lubricated, they dry up and the end just drops off. I am fortunate that i was not driving down the highway 50 miles an hour when this happened. There is absolutely no forewarning of a problem until it happens. My mechanic also noticed that chrysler has installed a heat shield between the tie rods and brakes. I have saved the parts and i have notified chrysler of this situation. I have 78,000 miles on my car. I truly feel that the tie rod fell off due to a manufacturing defect or flawed design -- i am notifying you in the hopes that this will be looked into so that no one gets killed while driving down the highway. The odometer and rpm gauge work intermittently. The abs light also comes on then goes off intermittently. Have changed fuses but stillhave the same results.*ak

After buying a new tire and placing it in the trunk the tire tread exploded. The explosion caused the rear window to shatter, and blew a hole in the rear seat. Dealership had been notified, but the problem had not been resolved. Future, size 20565r15.*ak

The distance between the gas and brake pedals is designed poorly. When transferring foot from one pedal to another it will get stuck between the pedals. *ak

On the engine i had the pulley on the timing belt come apart and just last month i had the head gasket start to leak from the back. Timing belt 28,000 head gasket 37,500. I have had to replace all 4 tires that where on the car. All by 29,000 miles--some earlier and then later. The brakes were replaces at the same time as the timing belt pulley. I knew they needed replacement and had an appointment to get them replaced when the timeing belt went out. It is a 1996 but i only have 37,500 miles.

Left lower control arm failed, causing steering to lock. *ak

Problems with my 1996 chrysler sebring. It goes thro tons of oil, i keep having to add oil to the car, everything has been breaking on it. Now it periodically stalls out non stop. There is only 85k miles on the car and it should not be having these problems. I have put in thousands of dollars into this car for repairs. It was under warranty by chrysler and i took it in for the oil issue and they said they saw no problem, that warranty ran out and my extended one kicked in and they said it had oil leaks and kept 'fixing' them. Once that warranty ran out they changed their story to 'the engine is consuming the oil, that's not under warranty'. Meanwhile i am left with a horrid car that wont run. *ph

But since he had the vehicle, he learned the whole dash board did not properly work. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer and was told, in order to repair the odometer, it would cost $ 500.00. When it rained, water leaked inside the vehicle. *jb dealer repaired drain hoses at rear. Burning wire smell with heater on. Lack of power. Radio inoperative. Erratic operation of the dash lights. Mirror lights stayed on when vehicle was shut off. Dealer inspected electrical connections to heater. Checked wiring under dash and found ok. The trottle stuck on my 1996 chrysler seabring. I was passing a vehicle and when ii went to brake and get in front of him i couldn't stop. The engine was reving at 8000 rpms. And i was holding the brakes as hard as i could and i was going about maybe 60 mph. I did get the car to come to a stop, after having to turn 2 corners very fast and going through an intersection. I had put it back and forth form nurtal & reverse and when the car was slow enough i put it in park and turned the key off. I came close to using a wall, or a house under construction for a way to stop. I was extreamy scarred and lucky that no one was hurt and at the time, no one had been going through the intersection. Today we called chrysler and they will fix the problem, but we need to get the car there. It is unsafe to even start the engine right now. We looked on line and found nhtsa campaign # 02v186000.

Fuel indicator, tachometer and odometer operate properly intermittently (tach & odo are more frequently inoperative than operative) usually tach is at 0 and odo does not indicate any numbers. Fuel gauge usually operates, but drops suddenly.*ak

Consumer stopped at the stop sign when air bag exploded with out striking an object or being hit. Passenger side airbag did not deploy. Cause is still unknown. *jg

This is the fifth engine in the raleigh area that has had this failure between 60000 and 80000 miles, it is similar to the failure noted with the similar neon engine, and a technical bulletin has been released. *ak

Vehicle stalls intermittently, mostly when slowing down and using electrical part, such as power windows. Dealer replaced fuel pump, but it did not remedy the problem. *ak

While driving, there would be a "clunking" noise coming from the front of the vehicle. Taken to dealership and vehicle was diagnosed, sway bar end links were defective and had to be replaced. Please note: parts available for inspection. *ak

While driving 65 mph accelerator stuck and vehicle revved even though consumer had taken his foot of pedal, consumer applied brakes and emergency brake, he had to shut off engine to stop vehicle, the vehicle was towed to mechanic who determined that throttle cable had to be replaced, it was frayed which had caused it to get stuck. *ak

Loss of control/steering on car. First incident was traveling on highway approx. 45 mph and needed to break suddenly. Car lost control and began to fishtail. Luckily was able to gain control. Second instance was traveling approx. 65mph went to merge into right lane and noticed a vehicle there. Jerked the car back into my lane (no brakes applied at that time) and the car lost control again and began fishtailing uncontrollably. . Could not gain control this time and ended up hitting the middle barrier of the expressway resulting in another car hitting mine. Crash could have been a lot worse. Am now waiting for chrysler investigator to determine if this is a result of a recall. But, will bring to independant mechanic for their opinion first. Just curious if this has happened to anyone else.*ak

At any speed there's a loud hollow sound. Took to dealer and they stated that both front wheel bearing needed replacing. *ak *jb

Cable connecting gas pedal to engine frayed and stuck at full throttle. Brakes did not work. Was traveling in rush hour traffic at full speed two times. The first time repeated stomping on the gas pedal and brake pedal and throwing the car into neutral unjammed it after a couple of minutes. The second time also in rush hour traffic these efforts did not help. I wove in and out of traffic until i got to an off ramp, and luckily was able to get through the traffic light at the intersection at the off ramp and onto a sidestreet where i put it into neutral and landed it like an airplane on a landing strip with the brakes smoking and the engine screaming and the car glided to a stop. Was told the cable had unwound like a frayed piece of rope and stuck inside the cable connecting the pedal to the engine.*ak

I have had so many problems with this car. The car looks very nice on the outside but has many issues on the inside. This car has cost me a fortune since my warranty went out at 75,000 miles. I have replaced brakes, rotors, and drums almost every year. This is very costly (over $350 every time). My transmission failed on me twice, once under warranty and the other without a warranty. I spent over $1,000 for repairs to replace a gasket, o-ring, and transmission pump. My o2 sensor failed twice. When i try to adjust my mirrors with the button on the driver side, the mirrors won't respond at all. I constantly hear a knocking noise from the engine. The service advisors at the dealership continue to tell me that chrysler cars sounds like that. That's normal. All the tings i have shared with you are just some of the things i have experieced. In my opinion, this car will put you in a bad financial situation. It's not worth the trouble. I traded mine for a more reliable car (a german car).*ak

Wheel lugs: studs are of defective material. In the last 6 months, there have been 6 failures where the lugs had to be replaced. This is a safety issue since it makes the spare tire useless (lugs cannot be removed with manual lug wrench). I use the car to get to remote areas and being stranded by a flat tire is dangerous. I had the vehicle in 2 weeks prior to 7/9/01 for regular service and a recall on the boots, the right being worse than the left side. I also complained about the rear end swaying when i drive over a rough road. There was no even flow. It turned out the inner tie rod ends had to be replaced. Within 2 days of receiving the vehicle back there was still a sway in the rear end but not as bad. I parked the car for 6 days because i used my father's new vehicle. When i used the car again especially on 7/9/01 i made a right hand turn into a parking lot and heard a loud metal thumping sound. I heard the sound again when i applied the brakes to stop. I brought the vehicle back to my residence and noticed the strut not only came undone but also broke the body frame under the front right wheel well. Vehicle was flat bedded back to dealership where they thought work could be done. Unfortunately, it had to go to an auto body shop. I am waiting to hear from body shop to see how this job will be done as well as what expense it will be to me. I saw on nhtsa's web site under complaints that there were 5 other complaints about the noise as well as the strut actually breaking off. I called to complain to crash, a data base site for vehicle problems who advised me they had just taken the same report on the same side on a dodge neon. I do not understand how this strut broke. When i asked the dealership how this happened, they advised me normal wear & tear. Now i am in the insurance business for 12 years and have owned 2 other vehicles in my life, this is not a "normal" wear and tear. You have to have a serious car accident with extensive front end damage for the possibility of this to happen. I have also noticed that all the recalls that chrysler has had on the sebrings in particular, are mainly the front suspension. Maybe there was a problem whith manufacturing. Radiator: the whole inside of the pipes; hoses; radiator is rusted. Every time i get an oil change i must get my radiator flushed and the coolant is completely rust color. It takes about 6 flushes for it to be clear again. This is abnormal for a car with only 86000 miles on it. I want all the hoses and radiator replaced free of charge. Convertible top: all the seems have come unstitched...I've had to glue them with special glue. The edging around the windows leaks. This should not happen!

We compalined to our local service dealer, croton dodge in croton ny of a water leak from the car wash, the dealer discovered that the arm supporting convertible roof had cracked completely all the way through. Dodge says that because it is a frame problem and because of the mileage they are not responsible. Since when does a vehicle owner have to protect himself from metal failure of a car frame? The driver's side seatbelt is defective. Several times, including recently, the seatbelt shoulder harness locks-up preventing it from being worn. The seatbelt housing is contained in the seat and is not anchored to the car. The seatbelt seems to catch and won't provide any slack. The seatbelt, while in the resting position appears to recoil improperly. The problem of the seatbelt jamming/locking has occurred several times since i have owned the car. Usually i can unlock the belt by repeatedly pulling the minimal available slack until the belt loosens. This most recent incident has proven impossible to unlock the belt. I will notify the dealership on 6/16/00. This safety defect is very hazardous to drivers and may prove to be fatal if an accident occurs. While returning from las vegas, i thumping sound began in the right front section of the car. I looked but could find no immediate problem. Upon returning home, i made a closer search for what was causing the clunking sound. As i looked above the right front tire, i could see that the welding for the shock tower had broken loose. I immediately took it to the dealership where the car was bought (van wyk's). The car was still under extended warranty. After van wyk's inspected the vehicle, they insisted we must have hit something in the road to cause the welding to break. I pointed out that there was no damage or other indications that something had been hit, but they refused to repair the vehicle. I felt i had no other choice but to seek independent repair. I then contacted independent wheel and frame inc. Inspection of the vehicle by eldon fussel indicated the welding of the shock tower to be defective in that mr. Fussel stated that the should sustain a major head on collison before those weld points should have broke. Mr. Fussel also confirmed that there was no damage contradicting van wyk's theory that we had hit something causing the welding to break. Independent wheel and frame proceeded to complete repair which resulted in $385.00 out-of-the-pocket expense to myself. Mr. Fussel also expressed how dangerous this situation (failure of the shock tower welding) could be (potential total loss of steering). *ak

Emission complaint related to possible o2(oxygen )sensor: defect:my vehicle has recently been emitting a sulphur smell from the exhaust and the 'check engine light' has remained on. When i took the vehicle into the dealership(to correct recall notification 827) the service department stated i needed a new o2(oxygen) sensor to correct my problems with the exhaust. Moreover,the dealership stated the problem with the exhaust was the reason the 'check engine light' remained on. This problem has almost cost me and my passenger our lives. It is not something that is reproducable on demand, but i have witnesses on the happenings. It happens at different speeds, different timings, but the amount of rain seems to be a factor. I have tried several times to resolve this at the dealer but since it is not reproducable they will not fix it. I reported this before my warranty ran out. I can not be taking chances during the rain and snowy weather an having my wipers just stop working. The driver's side shoulder belt does not stay on the upper chest region. It continously slips below the breast area, cutting across the arm. The seat back has to be placed completely erect in order to maintain proper placement of the shoulder harness. It is uneffective for someone who is tall and must have the seat partially reclined as it does not properly restrain the driver.

The driver side window has failed three times. Chrysler has made an upgrade kit, they won't pay for any costs, new part has broken twice more.

Brake pedal did not go down all the way to the floor & i was still applying pressure as the car continued forward. First time just went thru stop sign. Second time (10 minutes later), i had the same problem and hit a car. Estimated damage given was only to their car. Did not estimate mine. Chrysler's independent advisor said nothing was wrong with the brakes. Don't know what they checked but they said they wouldn't do any more. Terrified to drive car again. Traded it in to another dealer for a different brand. They considered the estimated damage in the trade-in price. I hope nobody gets killed next time. Considering they had a recall on the 96 sebring convertible, you would think they would look harder for the cause of this double brake failure. When attempting to remove the key from the ignition switch, the key is trapped in the ignition. Consumer, therefore, has to play with the key until noticing a clicking sound befor key is removed. Ea98014, while the key is out of the ignition, the vehicle can be moved from different positions, such as reverse/neutral, etc., which cause the vehicle to rollaway, almost causing an accident. Cause unknown. Please provide details. *ak

The vehicle was parked with the gear shift in "park". Driver exited the vehicle to remove items from the trunk when the vehicle "jumped out of gear", hit and pinned the driver, rolled down the driveway while dragging the driver and struck a tree.

Consumer has had several problems with vehicle. Brakes do not work, they grind and the pads keep wearing and have to be replaced, dealer stated the problem was with the calipers. Water is leaking into the vehicle due to sunroof being cut too short during recall 99i004, consumer feels there might have been previous problems with water leaking due to a rusted fuse. Speedometer does not work. There is a transmission leak. Air conditioner does not work. Engine light is illuminated. Windows still don't work properly. Mirrors do not work properly after recall 97v015. Vehicle gets poor gas mileage, dealer stated the spark plugs were burnt and fouled, spark plug wires were breaking down and arcing in tubes causing a build up in the throttle body. *slc

Consumer was driving approximately 45mph when vehicle began to accelerate.

Consumer was approaching a traffic light applied brakes when the pedal traveled to the floorboard, resulting in a collision. Twenty seconds after the collision the vehicle caught on fire in the engine compartment, cause of the fire undetermined. Please provide any further details. *ak

Brakes failed 7 months after dealer installed new brake booster vacuum hose as result of a chyrsler recall. When brakes failed front bumper struck the rear bumper of a jeep. While traveling at approx. 10 mph, the jeep only experienced minor damage. Within seconds of collision, the engine of my vehicle caught fire - resulting in a total loss of my vehicle. Believe this is due to manufacturer defects.

In august of 1998 i began to detect a creaking noise when i turned the steering wheel (even at a full stop). I brought it back to the dealership where i purchased the car and they determined that the lower right ball joint had lost it's lubrication. The service manager indicated that since there wasn't a grease fitting on the ball joint it needed to be replaced. The repair could not be done that day and an appointment was made for a couple of days later. I asked the service manager if the car was safe to drive, and he replied yes. The next day , while making a right hand turn on a residential street (5 - 10 mph) the car collapsed onto the right tire. When i looked at the damage i saw the the tire almost flat on the ground, the driveshaft was out of the transmission, the cv joint was pulled from the transmission and the ball joint was cut in half. There was also damage to the fender of the car. Salerno chrysler inspected the left ball joint and said it was fine. The car was repaired and a little over two months later the left side began to make the same noise. I brought the car back to the dealership, and they told me they could not reproduce the noise. The car was making noise the next day, and i decided to bring the car somewhere else. I brought the car to another chrysler dealership service center and they found the the left lower ball joint was failing due to lack of lubrication. I have that part in my possesion and would gladly send it to you. My concern is that i have spent a significant amount of money on repairs due to these lower ball joint failures and they seem to be manufacturer's problems, not my driving habits. Thee have been recalls for other chrysler cars for this very problem, but not the sebring. I think that someone should think about recalling the sebring also. After replacing head gasket, i now have rust deposits in the radiator fluid. The window in back falls with a thump when put down, and the brakes constantly squeak. My dealer told me there was a national back order on head gasket replacement parts, and that he had a whole parking lot waiting to be repaired. *ak

Brake rotors are out of round and have been replaced four times prior to today . The rotors have to be replaced again. The dealer and manufacturer have been notified. *ak

Engine head gasket started leaking. Surprised to find out that the dealer could not fix the car right away as the head gasket was not available because it was being re-designed. Found several other people with the same problem plus the ntsa site reports that chrysler has designed a multiple layer head gasket to solve thisproblem. Owners should be re-imbursed for the cost to fix this problem. *ak

Consumer experiencing ongoing problem with water leaking into the vehicle. Dealer notified and informed consumer it was normal for this condition to happen whenever the drain gets clogged up, causing the water to leak into vehicle. *ak

When parking vehicle and trying to get the key out of the ignition, the key won't come out until the tranmission goes into park, then vehicle will jump into drive and will move. The dealer can't determine the problem. *ak

Problems with the left front locking device of the convertible top. Threads of hold down bolt stripped, causing the top to come loose. Replacement unit purchase from chrysler looked a lot sturdier than the original, so they must have experienced more problems with this device. *ak

Engine rear main oil seal failed. Also rear trailing arm failed.

Driving the vehicle down the road and started seeing smoke coming from underneath the plastic of the gear shift indicator. Pulled vehicle over to the side of the road and called the fire department. The fireman said it was an electrical fire. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. *ak

Nhtsa recall 97v015000 manufacturer recall 717; car was parked and unoccupied and it caught on fire. Fire department came and put fire out. Cut all the wires, to make sure no other fire started. Specialist determined the cause of fire. Dealer and manufacturer contacted to investigate problem. *ak

1. Structure/frame/body -- water gets into the car and collects under the back seat cushion and on the floor. It has been reported to the dealer and attempts to fix have been unsuccessful. The water gets in at numerous locations and has been observed running over electrical connections and switches. There is also a concern about eventual corrosion and rust damage that could compromise the integrity of the seatbelt bolts because of the water. This problem was detected about nine months ago -- but there is no determination as to how long before that period it had been occurring. 2. Brakes/shoes (pads)/rotors -- the front brake pads have had to be replaced every 6,000 - 12,000 miles since about 17,000 miles on the car. It currently has about 58,000 miles on it. The recommended chrysler mopar pads separate and fail. They have literally fallen off of the metal holder that is a part of the brake pad, damaging the rotors as well. There is no warning that the pad is about to fall off or has been separating. Luckily, the last time it happened i was coming to a stop light and was able to control the stop and, due to the metal on metal sound when i was braking, pulled over immediately and telephoned for help. This is not only a risk while driving the vehicle, but a potential risk because i could be stranded in unfavorable locations and circumstances, without access to telephone for help. 3. Rack and pinion steering -- the gear assembly, power steering was replaced in january 1998. I noticed a problem before it was completely inoperable.

In drive-through; vehicle idling & in park; shifted into gear & heard engine rev up; vehicle suddenly accelerated & hit parked semi truck. Neither air bags deployed. Engine pushed to firewall & driver's/passenger's doors damaged severely. Vehicle totaled. *ak

Brake problems; intermittently, while driving the vehicle at 30 mph and applying the brakes, the pedal goes to the floorboard and the vehicle keeps traveling at 35 mph. This happens without warning, under normal braking conditions, on regular road surface, and no inclement weather. The brakes pads were replaced 4 times/rotors were replaced once, and calipers were checked/replaced. Owner still experiencing braking problem. *ak

Took car in to 3 different dealers to have them fix water leaks & air whistling and none could fix it. They said there was a flaw in the design of the top. They tried spraying foam on edge, adding an elastic strap (#8894 part), tried adjusting top - none of these exercises worked. Now yet another dealer in joplin too tells us there's nothing that can be done as it's a flaw in the design/construction. There is also a whistling in the a/c system or vents when a/c is on and driving 40+ miles an hour. Several times while driving in "d" the transmission doesn't shift out of low gear. *ak
