P0720

Output Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction

DTC P0720, sometimes indicated as P072000 is an OBD diagnostic trouble code indicating a generic fault with the vehicle powertrain (i.e. engine and gearbox). This code identifies an error with the causing output speed sensor circuit malfunction.

The output speed sensor (OSS) is a device that measures the rotational speed of the driveshaft. The OSS sends this information to the PCM, which uses it to calculate the vehicle's speed. If the OSS fails, the PCM will not be able to calculate the vehicle's speed, which will cause the "Check engine" light to come on and the vehicle to perform poorly.
There are several possible causes of a failed OSS. One common cause is a bad OSS sensor. Another common cause is a bad wiring harness. If the OSS fails, it will need to be replaced.

Truck speed went down when driving, try to seed up on the gas pedal for a few seconds didnt wana move forward. This has happend three time already, my son has a code reader thing that when he plugged it to my truck this code came up P0720. Had to park my truck at home for my worry and safety. My son took it to the Ford dealership and got it a diagnostic test done. On way over there he said the truck drove fine. The dealership test said it was lead frame connector. They have to change that and drain the oil of transmission and refill it again. Its almost a month my truck has been park here at home.

Car will stop accelerating with no warnings then will start back move when you let the sit for and hour. Engine light will not light up when the incident happened so the problem can not be diagnosed until the engine come on. However when the engine light does come you can take to dealership and they will tell that the transmission speed sensors need to be replaced in which the sensor is located inside the transmission and in conjunction to that it is recommended that the valve body should be replaced also. This has been a problem with a lot of the Infiniti's with years ranging from 2014-2019 with 3.7 liter engine. This problem should be resolved because the car can suddenly stop move at high speeds and cause and accident. Please take a good look at this recall aamco transmission have had hundreds of Infiniti's with the same problem and they can not repair so they will send you to the dealership for repairs in which it will cost the consumer 3,000 plus to fix the problem and they will recommend that you should get the transmission replaced instead of repairing it and most of the vehicles are having this problem with low mileage. As i was driving on the freeway my transmission downshifted and my rear wheels locked up and i lost control of my vehicle with all 4 of my children in the car with me! After this happened the check engine light came on and i had the code read at my local auto parts store and the error code was P0720 for the output shaft sensor which is located on the lead frame inside my transmission. I called my Ford dealer to get a quote to fix my car and was told based on my vin the part number for the faulty part is al3z7g276d. When i looked up this part number on the internet i found that this part was recalled for the same exact thing that happened to me except that the current recall didn’t include my model year and build. I’m confused as to why if the recalled part number is in my truck and i almost died along with all 4 of my children because of it that my car is not covered in this safety recall.

Once recall was done within a week my truck drastically downshifted twice before taking it back to the dealer who performed the recall. They said there was no problem with my truck and told me my wheels locking was not a sign of downshifting. Now i continue to have downshifting issues and also am throwing a P0720 code. Was driving my 2013 Mustang home from my parents house the car didn't want to shift or move even at full throttle stop in the middle of the road shut the vehicle off and restarted it drove home just fine. Went to drive it later that night and again car didn't want to shift nor move but this time i lost my speedometer and all my digital display in the center went blank. As the days and weeks went by the problem started becoming more frequent so i took it to an auto zone to get the codes checked had codes P0720 and P0722 (output speed sensor inside molded lead frame) come up on the code reader. I then called my cousin who is a Ford dealer mechanic to look up my codes and he told me to come by the shop and showed me what the codes were from the software from Ford they used. We then looked up to see if there was a recall on the part and found a recall from Ford for the 2012 Mustang with the 6r80 which is the same auto transmission that i have. The cut off build date for the recall was february 2012 and my vehicle was made in august of 2012. I also read of other people with the same year and transmission that i have having the same issues as me. I called Ford customer service to see if i they would extend the recall to cover 2013 Mustangs they said they would not. I personally have had multiple times where the shifting has almost caused a wreck. An instance here recently was i was pulling out of the parking lot of the company i work at and the car started off fine then stalled and didn't want to go and almost got t boned. Another instance was a couple days before thanksgiving and i was headed to my parents house and just merged onto the highway and the car started acting up and could of easily caused a pile up near the ramp and got someone killed.Bought the car from a Ford dealership with 34k miles now has about 76k miles.

The frightening issue i experienced on january 7, 2019 is identical to the reports i have since read regarding this vehicle and the frequent issues that led to the recall for 2010-2012 Ford F-150's for unexpected transmission downshifts [nhtsa recall no. / mfr recall no. : 16v-248 / 16s19]. While driving 65-70 mph on the interstate, speedometer suddenly and rapidly fluctuated between 40 and 70, then transmission abruptly dropped from 6th/5th gear to 1st gear. As a result, my wheels locked and caused the vehicle to skid into the lane to my right, forcing other cars to swerve out of my way to avoid a high speed collision. It happened so fast, and without warning, that it was difficult to understand what was actually occurring. Once stopped (in the middle of the interstate), i drove to the median, turned the engine off, sat for a few minutes to gather my thoughts, restarted the vehicle and drove it slowly to my Ford dealership (not on the highway). After inspecting my truck, the Ford dealership verified the issue and stated the following (written report attached): ran koec got code P0720 oss sensor circuit fault, ran pinpoint tests, found open in oss sensor which is part of the molded lead frame attached to the valve body, removed the valve body, dissasembled, cleaned and inspected the value body, all valves and bores are ok, reassembled valve body with new molded lead frame assembly and new revised separator plate gasket, installed new clutch feed tube seals and seal between valve body and fluid pump, installed new fluid filter and pan gasket, filled transmission with new fluid reprogrammed pcm and cleared dtcs, verified repairs. Despite parallels to the previous recall issue, Ford informed me it is not covered (there is nothing i could have done to prevent it) and the total cost to me was $1,418.83. Please expand the recall - it will save lives.

Symptoms will clear after an ignition key cycle, but return. Trouble codes (dtcs) P0720 is sometimes stored in the powertrain control module. I'm currently stuck with a >$900 repair bill to replace the lead frame attached to the valve body in the transmission. While driving, either going 25 mph in a housing development or 75 mph on the interstate, the truck will sometimes shift gears, throw a wrench light, and the speedometer will read 0. There has been a recall for an issue similar to this for trucks between 2011 and 2013. Trucks not covered under this recall were given a feild service action for extended warranty. They know this is an issue to more vehicles than what they recalled. Owners were not notified of this field service action. Not only that, but this is very dangerous while going 75 mph on the interstate. This causes the truck to down shift, slow down, and you must pull over for safety on the interstate. A code will pop up as P0720 or P0721. Ford should be doing more since they know it is an issue, or they would not have extended the warranty. This is happening to many F-150 vehicles built in those date ranges.

My 2012 Ford f150 has about 60k miles on it. I have been having transmission problems - shifting into higher or lower gears than it should, not shifting into gear, revving high with low power, the speedometer will show 0 mph a lot of times, and at one point it downshifted into first gear while i was driving 65-70mph on the freeway. Fortunately, that time nobody was behind me and i was able to safely pull to the shoulder. That only happened once. I was able to put it in park, turn it off, and turn it on again to get it going. The other issues have been happening a few times a day and i can get it to work and back but it's a little dicey when driving in traffic. I have to put it in park, turn it off and sometimes in reverse to get it going. I got a dtc P0720 a few days ago and then took it into the shop on sept 18th. Jones west Ford, the Ford dealership in reno told me it was the lead frame and they would replace it for over $700. I started looking online to see if anybody had experience with this. Apparently there was a recall for my make and model and year, with my transmission, for trucks built at the plant where my truck was built at the time my truck was built. I called Ford customer service, but they and the dealership say my truck is not affected by the recall. It is however showing all the signs of an unsafe vehicle with the exact same problems that i am seeing in the recall (i guess Ford now calls it a "customer satisfaction program" 16n02). They said they would have to charge me, they didn't fix my truck, said the part is back-ordered and i should come and get my truck and take the chance of driving it. I asked for a loaner vehicle and they said no. After i picked it up, driving home in heavy traffic, the hood started to rise up. After they didn't fix my truck, they forgot to latch the hood. Very scary. Pulled to the side of the busy freeway, latched the hood.

The vehicle would downshift into 1st gear without warning, has occurred when vehicle was traveling approximately 35 mph. The vehicle would also remain in 1st gear after these incidents and intermittently when leaving from a stop, at an intersection. Vehicle has done this several times, in which case the dashboard displayed an illuminated malfunction indicator light and gone into limp mode, with only 5th gear available, while in an intersection. This problem would also cause the odometer to read '-------.--' and the speedometer to read '0 mph', even when the vehicle is in motion, travelling at any speed. Vehicle is in otherwise perfect operating conditions. Diagnostic trouble code P0720 was displayed during these incidents. The manufacturer has customer satisfaction program 16n02 for 'certain' vehicles, in which the dealers are replace the molded lead frame within the transmission. In the case of my vehicle, this program did not apply to my vehicle, while at the same time, the molded lead frame within the transmission was determined to be the source of the issue and subsequently replaced. With my vehicle not applying for the noted customer satisfaction program, with the same faulty part as noted within the specific customer satisfaction program, it is my opinion that the affected vehicles with deficient molded lead frames is far greater than what was initially thought and therefore, the recall program should be extended to all F-150s and similar vehicles within the specified build dates, as noted within the customer satisfaction program. The molded lead frame failure should be considered a manufacturing defect and causes serious safety concerns for the drivers of those vehicles and to the travelling public.

Grieco Ford of delray beach (3000 south federal highway, delray beach, florida 33483, (561) 278-278-0303) and autonation Ford margate (5401 west copans road, margate, florida 33063, (954) 644-4976) were made aware of the failures and stated that there was no recall on the vehicle. In addition, the dealers requested a diagnostic assessment. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failures. The contact attached a diagnostic code reader to the vehicle and referenced diagnostic trouble code: oss sensor (P0720). The failure mileage was 119,218.

This is an update to previous report: 11129849. Following the initial sudden downshift to 1st gear the truck was evaluated by the local Ford dealership. No problems were found, however over the next 2 months the truck began to experience frequent shifting errors. The dash gauges would quit or blank out and the truck would become stuck in a single gear, most often 3rd gear. The frequency continued to increase until the vehicle was taken back to the Ford dealership, obd-ii codes were P0720, P0722. A previous Ford bulletin described the exact symptoms in detail however Ford reported my particular vehicle was not involved in the repair bulletin. After discussion with my local technician we elected to proceed with the repair bulletin even though i would have to pay out of pocket. This bulletin required replacement of the transmission lead frame. This has completely resolved the issue.

I was driving along rt. 837 highway on my way to work, going about 45 mph, when all of a sudden all of the gauges on my dash went blank and my speedometer went to zero. Then a big orange wrench appeared on my dash. The truck dropped into first gear and i had very little power. I was able to turn my hazard lights on and pull over to the side of the road without being rear ended. I ended up making it to work, which was about 3 minutes away, in first gear. After shutting off the ignition and restarting the engine all of the gauges were working again. I made it home fine that day and an advanced auto scan of the vehicle brought up no codes. Two days later i had the same problem occur on rt. 30 highway and i had a scan tool i had bought with me. I got 2 codes, (P0720, P0722) both relating to the output shaft speed sensor circuit.

Output speed sensor (oss) failure (recall: 16n02). I was driving down a city street at approximately 45 mph, when the vehicle suddenly down shifted from fifth gear to first gear and then shifted back into fifth gear after approximately 10-15 seconds. Later that day, i was accelerating from a stop light when the vehicle felt like it had lost power and began to jerk when i pressed the gas. The speedometer stopped working, the info center displayed all dashes, the rpm's increased and the service advanced trac message displayed and the engine light illuminated. I had the codes from the engine light read and it came up as P0720 fault. My vehicle is experiencing all of the signs listed in the recall, but is not included. My truck was manufactured in the dearborn plant within the time frame of the recall dates. I have contacted Ford and the dealership and they could not explain why. I have attached a pdf of the recall.

While driving on the interstate at 70 mph my speed information screen showed the wrench and the transmission down shifted to a lower gear. I had to pull off the interstate and restart the vehicle after waiting a few minutes. After i restarted the vehicle the check engine light and wrench went out. Subsequent problems have been the transmission will not shift out of gear and the information screen shows the wrench. My local mechanic said the following p codes were present, P0720 and P0722 and advised there was a recall for my specific transmission. When i called Ford they said that even though my transmission was experiencing the same problems as those under recall my specific transmission was not on the recall list.

My 2011 Ford f150 lariat 5.0l has 100,000 miles at which time i began having issues with erratic transmission shifting. T has happened multiple times both at high speeds and low speeds. Truck will downshift and transmission jumps all over the place. Very scary and very unsafe. I was able to get the error code which was P0720 output shaft speed sensor circuit. I checked my vin and did not find any recalls associated with my truck. I called multiple Ford dealers who told me the same thing. I searched the internet and read on edmonds.Com, cars.Com, and nhtsa that Ford has a recall effecting 2011 Ford f150s with the 6r80 transmission built between aug 19th, 2011 and march 09, 2012. Mine was built with the 6r80 transmission with a build date of sep 6th, 2011. Based on what i read and the similar issues with the recall i find it hard to believe my truck is not included. I cannot safely drive so i called Ford customer care and opened case# caf15213386. I then took my truck to a Ford dealer to have the fix applied which was to update the powertrain control module software costing me $180. I was then told this would not solve my problem. To solve my problem i needed to replace my lead frame which would cost $1300 but they can't get me in until next week. The recall notice i read indicated the pcm software would be no cost under the recall and if code presented itself Ford would provide a one time replacement of the lead frame at no charge within 10 years or 150,000 miles. Please investigate to see why my truck is not included in this recall. I will have the work done and save my receipts in hopes that i will be reimbursed after this case and Ford case are resolved.

While driving, normal conditions, vehicle drops from higher gears to 1st gear. Rear tires locked up, speedometer went crazy. Checked code P0720. Happened multiple occasions. Latest incident, transmission made hard shift, speedometer, odometer and mpg indicator all went dead and the "wrench" icon appeared on the dash display. Read codes, came up with P0720 and P0722. After restarting, all gauges worked. Vehicle was drivable with caution. Researched recall notices, found 16n02 "molded leadframe extended warrantee", but it only covers f150's manufactured on certain dates at certain plants. My transmission is the same type and model number....6r80 as all f150 ecoboost made in 2011 and 2012. I called Ford and they stated my vin did not show up under any recalls, and i was not covered because of "stipulations". I cannot comprehend that Ford will only cover certain criteria, even though the transmission is the same at all manufacturing locations. If a transmission model is faulty, it is faulty regardless of where or when it was installed in the vehicle. I am sure i am not the only one with this issue, and find it disturbing that Ford will allow these vehicles to remain on the road without them fixing them, or worse still, passing off the cost to the owners, many of whom cannot easily fork out the money or time to have them fixed at their expense. This is totally wrong and needs to be addressed as soon as possible. These vehicles with this malfunction occurring are not safe to drive.

I drove the truck to a safe and location, with the truck barely accelerating. I parked and shut the engine off. When the vehicle was restarted and placed in drive. The digital electronic gear was in the 3rd gear. My truck would barely accelerate. I went to have a diagnosis performed and the trouble code came back as P0720 output shaft speed sensor. This is very dangerous and a safety risk. I'm terrified to drive on the interstate because my truck may all of sudden downshift to 1st and cause an accident. I have a newborn child and i'm terrified to drive around with my newborn. I purchase my vehicle brand new and i only have approx 83,000 miles on the vehicle as of today. This should not be happening. There has to be a recall on this vehicle, even though i have checked to see if there is a recall. Some vehicles produced at this time may been left off this recall. I firmly believe my vehicle was left off the recall list. I am aware of a recall similar to my incident but my vehicle is not included.

After driving for about 10 minutes, the transmission did not want to come out of low gear. At 35 mph, i was at about 6,000rpms in drive. I confirmed the overdrive off button is not engaged, nor is it in "l", and the emergency brake is off. When it has been cooled off for about 3+ hours, it will drive fairly normal for about 10-12 minutes until warmed up, then it all starts again. Even once it is cooled off, there is a slight drag on power and it will begin to have erratic shifting (similar to a regular automatic transmission slipping) after a few minutes on take off it feels like the parking brake is on, but it is not. The service engine soon light comes on, the vdc control light comes on, and another light that is above the vdc light comes on. Codes P0720 and P1778 were found by a local non-Nissan dealer who checked them as a courtesy for me. Have discovered that Nissan has extended the cvt transmission warranty on certain Nissans up to 10 yrs or 120,000 miles, my Sentra is included among others. Get more info at: http://www.Nissanassist.Com/programdetails.Php. However, my local Nissan dealer says if it will cost me 4 hours labor at $125 hr to tear down for a full diagnosis. If not covered, i have to pay that. A call to another Nissan service center explained the same expense. He also told me that there are many coming thru that are under the replacement program due to a defect that causes engine coolant into the transmission. For that problem, Nissan will replace it but they expect the customer to pay $2,000 toward the bill. That is ridiculous for a manufacturer defect in design that they have acknowledged that causes the failure. I have found in the Nissan factory cvt manual that the problem is internal and mechanical according to its own diagnostics see that manual here http://allSentra.Com/fsm/2009_Sentra/cvt.Pdf . I have a 2010, but it is the same.

2007 SUBARU OUTBACK with 76000.0 miles

'07 Subaru Outback 2.5i w/ automatic transmission. When transmission was cool code P0720 was set for vehicle speed sensor failure. After driving for a while error would reset as sensor presumably warmed and began working normally. I identified and confirmed the front vehicle speed sensor was the problem. A week after the initial failure, and prior to my being able to replace the sensor, the behavior of the failure changed: at highway speed (60-65mph) the car would automatically shift into first gear and feel like the brakes were slammed on. This being an obviously dangerous and scary situation, my short term solution was to cut the wire going to the sensor until i could replace it. (the sensor is hard-wired into a 3-sensor wire harness that requires access inside the transmission to be replaced). Just prior to the car automatically shifting into first gear i also heard the safety solenoid in the shifter assembly (the one that prevents the operator from putting the shifter into park while the car is moving) quickly cycling on and off, so my assumption was that a partial signal was being seen by the onboard computer and interpreted as if the vehicle was traveling at a slower speed than it really was. After cutting the speed sensor out of the circuit this aspect of the failure has not repeated itself.

Mazda needs to be held accountable for these shady transmissions they are putting in this vehicles. All i have been reading is transmission problems with Mazda. There needs to be a recall done by Mazda on replacing the transmission out completely. One recall has been done on the torque converter for years 2001, 2002, and 2003. I just want to voice my feelings on this company (Chrysler) concerning the Chrysler Pacifica 2005 awd why wasn't this car recalled as a whole. It is a piece of crap i bought this car as a reliable family car being that i am a single mother of 5. I researched this car to make sure that it was going to be the right fit. I have had to buy 3 batteries for this car which to me seems to be a lot. The car burned oil constantly and no one could tell me where the oil was going, i had to have the motor mount changed i had to replace the egr valve failed my emissions because of it right after meaning seconds after it was changed the check engine light came back on while at the shop showing that the catalytic converter needed to be changed! Not only did i have to pay for the egr valve but i also had to buy a two year waiver for my emissions in order to get my tabs because there was no way that i was going to be able to afford a catalytic converter. Got the catalytic converter changed and the check engine light went off for about a month or so but came right back on. Had to get the radiator repaired and now there is 5 different codes popping up P0305, P0404, P0736, p179, and P0720 im sure these codes mean nothing to you but i needed to address. 2003 Honda Odyssey automatic transmission failure. Nhtsa please research the serious problem with the 2003 Honda Odyssey automatic transmission failure rate. Quickly just google it and you will see that thousands are having their transmissions fail and not just the original transmissions but also the remanufactured transmissions that Honda dealers use as a repair. Review comments made on the forum at odyclub.Com and other websites such as automobilemag.Com. This is an epidemic safety issue involving the automatic transmissions of Honda Odysseys. There was already a successful class action lawsuit against Honda for years prior to my model and there is much talk online about pursuing a class action lawsuit for years 2003-2005 as well! It is the job of the nhtsa to protect american consumers and i am requesting that nhtsa pull the data on all of the Honda Odyssey transmission failures plus do some additional research online. I am confident you will see there is a major safety issue here due to mechanical failure. My failure caused a complete loss of power which could have killed me and my family since we were turning out into a busy street when it happened. I was able to get the 2003 Honda Odyssey into the dealership and they told me it could very well be a transmission failure. I have maintained this mini-van far better than what Honda even recommends and yet this still happens to me and thousands of other citizens. The diagnostic code P0720 is an early sign of transmission failure. The dealership is replacing the sensor but i am told it is most likely the early signs of transmission failure. If it ultimately ends up being the transmission it will cost me over $3,500 to fix and they replace it per Honda with a remanufactured one that has a very high failure rate as well! Some make it less than 36k on the remanufactured one and have to replace it a third time! Major safety issue involving a major powertrain part - the automatic transmission.

I have had two transmissions in this 2002 Infiniti I35 and now may have to have the third. Summer of 2011 i experienced intermittent issues with the engine racing and the transmission apparently disengaging, with no power to the wheels. First time i took it to the dealer they couldn't detect any problems as there was no service engine soon warning on the dash board so their computer couldn't detect a problem. Happened again and the technician told me not to turn the ignition off when i got to the shop but to let the engine keep running. He drove the car back to the shop and hooked it up to the computer. The problem was diagnosed as the torque converter clutch function code along with P0720 and P1574, check engine light concer ' ip006, (failing), and i was told i had to have both a torque converter and a transmission. The price for a new one was too high and i opted for a used torque converter/transmission and now, 5/2/2012, less than a year later i am having the same problem as before. Several times this loss of power to the wheels has happened when pulling into traffic and is extremely dangerous. Another issue is the suspension and steering. I have had to replace the struts because the front end would vibrate veer left and right and lose some control over the steering when driving over rough pavement. Even after strut replacement the issue still persists. August of 2011 around the same time transmission was replaced i had to replace the radiator which burst at a seam. It was replaced before the transmission and at a different shop, and not at the dealer's shop. *js

I pressed on the gas even more and the engine continued to rev high but the van continued to slow down rapidly. "check engine" light went on as we were pulling over the right shoulder. I stopped the car and turned off the ignition. Fortunately, we were on the right lane. Had we have been on the left lane, this potentially could have been a fatal disaster. The "check engine" came back with a P0720 code and apparently, after googling code P0720, the output speed sensor (oss) malfunctioning is very common with Dodge automobiles. If you check the web, many Dodge, plymouth and chrysler owners have had near misses because of the oss malfunctioning and without any notice. This present a very dangerous situation which can lead to a fatal, fatal disastrous accidents. This requires further review and investigation. There should be a recall done based on safety issues. The vehicles stalls without warning traveling at any speed. Now try imagining left lane on peak hours.
