P0722

Output Speed Sensor No Signal

DTC P0722, sometimes indicated as P072200 is an OBD diagnostic trouble code indicating a generic fault with the vehicle powertrain (i.e. engine and gearbox). This code identifies an error with the causing output speed sensor no signal.

This code is set when the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) detects that the output speed sensor is not sending a signal.
There are a few things that could cause this code to set. One possibility is that the output speed sensor itself is bad and needs to be replaced. Another possibility is that there is a wiring issue that is preventing the sensor from sending a signal. Finally, there could be a problem with the PCM itself that is preventing it from receiving a signal from the sensor.
If this code is set, it is recommended that the cause be diagnosed and repaired as soon as possible. Failing to do so could result in damage to other components.

2014 FORD F-150

On several occasions while driving at 50+ mph my truck suddenly downshifts from 6th gear to 1st gear causing the rear wheels to lock up and skid. I have taken the vehicle to the dealership and they refuse to do anything because they can not duplicate the issue. This has happened several times the last time was on the freeway causing me to shoot over 2 lanes of traffic almost causing an accident. The Ford dealership and the extended warranty company ameriplus both refuse to help because they both say that they can not duplicate the problem but the vehicle comes up with dtc codes P0731 and P0722

2014 f150 pickup while at speed (first time at 35mph and second at 65mph) on two occasions downshifted into 1st gear, causing speedometer to read 0 and odometer to read ----------. A technician read code P0722 from computer after last incident. The vehicle was manufactured one month after the end date of a recall designated to address this problem, and Ford will not fix this truck under that recall, leaving the expense of the repair to the owner. We do not trust this vehicle to be safe to drive over 40mph as a loss of control at highway speeds due to rear tire lockup could be catastrophic.

While accelerating, the vehicle has suddenly dropped down to a lower gear, and flashed a wrench symbol on the dashboard. When this occurs, all dashboard indicators zero out and speed drops drastically. This has occured on both a city street and on the highway. The time it occured one the highway, i nearly lost control of the vehicle. After the second time the issue occurred, i took the vehicle to a dealership. They inspected and discovered dtc code P0722 and diagnosed that it was due to a faulty lead connector. My own research revealed a recall for the 2011 and 2012 model year f150s to fix the exact same problem, a faulty speed sensor. Now i'm paying $650 for something that's been a problem with other model years.

Without warning my rear wheels & drivetrain locked up while driving. My vehicle suddenly lost control and i had to drive into the grassy shoulder at around 35 mph to avoid being in traffic. As the problem was occuring, the speedometer went to 0 mph and the airbag light illuminated. The vehicle mileage in the cluster showed all dashes. The transmission felt like it was disconnected from the engine, and transmission was stuck in 5th gear at low vehicle speeds. I cycled the ignition, and truck drove normally after that. This is an intermittent problem and very dangerous to drive with as vehicle will lose power and transmission can shift to 1st gear at high vehicle speeds. My vehicle has the 6r80 faulty transmission with the same type of 6r80 molded lead frame defect problem reported in previous f150 model years. Upon contacting dealership they seemed like they never heard of the issue before. Ford should issue a recall for all vehicles with P0722 output shaft speed sensor diagnostic trouble codes. A simple electrical issue on a $100 part should not cause this type of dangerous reaction. See Ford tsb 13-4-9 and 13-2-3 and recall #16v248000 that should apply to all 2013 F-150's too.

Was driving my 2013 Mustang home from my parents house the car didn't want to shift or move even at full throttle stop in the middle of the road shut the vehicle off and restarted it drove home just fine. Went to drive it later that night and again car didn't want to shift nor move but this time i lost my speedometer and all my digital display in the center went blank. As the days and weeks went by the problem started becoming more frequent so i took it to an auto zone to get the codes checked had codes P0720 and P0722 (output speed sensor inside molded lead frame) come up on the code reader. I then called my cousin who is a Ford dealer mechanic to look up my codes and he told me to come by the shop and showed me what the codes were from the software from Ford they used. We then looked up to see if there was a recall on the part and found a recall from Ford for the 2012 Mustang with the 6r80 which is the same auto transmission that i have. The cut off build date for the recall was february 2012 and my vehicle was made in august of 2012. I also read of other people with the same year and transmission that i have having the same issues as me. I called Ford customer service to see if i they would extend the recall to cover 2013 Mustangs they said they would not. I personally have had multiple times where the shifting has almost caused a wreck. An instance here recently was i was pulling out of the parking lot of the company i work at and the car started off fine then stalled and didn't want to go and almost got t boned. Another instance was a couple days before thanksgiving and i was headed to my parents house and just merged onto the highway and the car started acting up and could of easily caused a pile up near the ramp and got someone killed.Bought the car from a Ford dealership with 34k miles now has about 76k miles.

Automatic transmission problem. Twice while traveling on the highway in 6th gear at greater than 65 mph the vehicle shifted from 6th to 4th gear for no apparent reason which caused the tires to squeal and the entire vehicle jerk and slow significantly. No warning or error or warning lights were illuminated. Five other times while traveling at about 15 mph the automatic transmission controls attempted to shift from 2nd gear to 5th gear which significantly bogged the vehicle down and almost stalled. Ford error code P0722, obd-ii trouble code associated with the transmission output speed sensor came in. The vehicle was serviced and it was determined the molded lead frame connector was defective and needed replaced.

Traveling at various speeds (30-70 mph), transmission shifts from upper gears (3rd-6th) immediately down to 1st gear, failing to downshift through the gears in between. Wrench icon appears on display. Display also shows dashes instead of numbers and the speedometer drops to zero although still moving forward. Rear tires break traction. Crash potential is high due to loss of control of vehicle, especially on wet roads. This has been occurring over the last several months. At first it just seemed like a random hard shift (2nd to 1st when accelerating) perhaps once a month - easily forgettable. In the last two weeks however, it's happened 4 times at speeds over 30 mph and once at 70 on an interstate highway. The truck is too dangerous to operate and is will be sidelined until repaired. Scan tool showed P0722 (output shaft speed sensor). The only fix is to replace the leadframe connector (p/n: al3z-7g276-d) in the transmission. This applies to the 6r80 transmission. Signs/symptoms are identical to the 2016 recall of 2011-2012 F-150's. It seems Ford extended the free replacement warranty for 10 years/150,000 miles for effected vehicles. Unfortunately, i've just passed the 150k mark, so if the recall is expanded, i'm already outside the mileage limit, so i'll be stuck with the bill.

Transmission lost power at 75 miles per hour on the highway. The wrench sign came on dash and then all displays showed -----. Additionally, the speedometer stopped working and the air bag light illuminated. When transmission reengaged, it was in 3rd gear, causing wheels to lose traction. I was able to navigate heavy traffic to get to the shoulder, where truck shifted to 5th gear once stopped. I was able to make it off the highway, however, the truck would shift randomly between 3rd, 4th and 5th gear but would not shift in to 1st, 2nd or 6th. Grapevine Ford dealership pulled code P0722 from 6r80 transmission and determined transmission lead frame was faulty. Ford does not accept responsibility and will not pay for this known problem. The 6r80 lead frame has been recalled on 2011 and 2012 f150's but has not yet been recalled on 2013 f150's.

I received my Ford recall notice on the need to reprogram power train module on or about april 1st 2019. My first instance of my 2013 f150 stx supercab, going into sudden downshift mode and then limp mode (blue wrench signal) occurred around april 12, 2019. I was driving at about 30 miles an hour on a city street when my truck when the truck downshifted by itself and the blue wrench light appeared. My truck went into limp mode and i was unable to drive. After pulling over to the side of the street, i turned off my truck, waited a few minutes and then the issue resolved itself. I took my vehicle into the Ford dealership on april 18, 2019 where recall 19s07 6r80 (reprogram power train module) work was completed. On may 17, 2019, while driving about 30 miles an hour on a city street (without notice or cause) my truck again went into downshift mode, limp mode and the blue wrench light came on. Same as the first instance, i pulled over to the side of the street, turned off my truck, waited a few minutes and when i turned on the truck again the issue was resolved. It was clear that this issue was electrical and no mechanical and the original recall work completed by the dealership did not resolve the issue. On 05/19/2019, i again took my truck to the Ford dealership where this time the module lead frame was replaced after code P0722 was identified. I want the record to reflect that the first recall, reprogramming of the power train module did not work, and left me at risk of a second downshifting incident occurring. My truck had a second incident and after returning to the dealership a second time the leadframe was replaced. I also want to note that the dealership's data that the original recall work was completed on 04/26/2019 is inaccurate. The original recall work was performed by the dealership on 04/18/2019.

The vehicle has two "types" of problem that may be related. In some cases, the truck drops down into 1st gear regardless of the speed. This has happened three times since i picked up the truck following the attempted recall repair, but none of these incidences of dropping into 1st gear caused error codes to pop up. In another "type" of incident, the speedometer drops to zero even while in motion, and the vehicle stays in 3rd gear no matter the speed (including when not in motion, even after shifting into park and back to drive, the vehicle automatically jumps to 3rd gear before i even start to move). During this second type of incident, the airbag light came on, as did the wrench/check engine light. This is an update to previous report: 11129849. Following the initial sudden downshift to 1st gear the truck was evaluated by the local Ford dealership. No problems were found, however over the next 2 months the truck began to experience frequent shifting errors. The dash gauges would quit or blank out and the truck would become stuck in a single gear, most often 3rd gear. The frequency continued to increase until the vehicle was taken back to the Ford dealership, obd-ii codes were P0720, P0722. A previous Ford bulletin described the exact symptoms in detail however Ford reported my particular vehicle was not involved in the repair bulletin. After discussion with my local technician we elected to proceed with the repair bulletin even though i would have to pay out of pocket. This bulletin required replacement of the transmission lead frame. This has completely resolved the issue.

Around the beginning of july this year as i was driving around my speedometer and digital gauges on my 2012 Ford F-150 quit working and the truck began shifting very hard. I was able to pull over and restart the engine, and upon doing so it began normal operation. Over the course of the next couple weeks it did this same thing approximately four (4) more times. The last time was the most serious as i was driving down the highway about 65mph when my truck suddenly dropped into first gear and almost forced me off the road along with my two (2) year old daughter who was riding with me. I was able to maintain control and guide the truck off the roadway. However, this time upon restart the truck, while parked, was continuously revving at about 6,000rpm's. Upon a second restart it went back to normal operation. I called my local Ford dealership, cavalier Ford chesapeake square, and spoke with lindsay givens who told me it would be a "hot minute" before someone could look at my truck. I dropped it off after hours that night (07/20/18) with a written description of the problems. I was later contacted on 07/24/18, by phil causey, saying they were going to take a look at my truck the following day. I never heard anymore and upon calling the dealership on 07/27/18, and speaking to tanya howard, i was advised my truck still hadn't been looked at and phil was off until the following week. On 07/31/18 i received a call from phil and he stated that while they were driving my truck around it got stuck in first gear on them as well, and they located the problem in the leadframe of my transmission. The diagnostics shows my truck read codes P0722 and p072. I was traveling at a speed of 60mph, when my transmission downshifted from 6-1, locking up the rear tires. This cause the semi pulling a load to have to swerve to avoid me.. Another instance, i was pulling out in a busy intersection and the transmission went into 5th gear, causing the vehicle to nearly stall, resulting in 3 vehicles slamming on brakes to avoid me. Ford is denying me coverage of a recall issued due to me 2012 f150 being outside of the specified production dates with a production date of 7/12. Https://www.Edmunds.Com/car-news/2011-12-Ford-F-150-among-vehicles-recalled-for-transmission-defect.Html i am at Ford currently and they have diagnosed it with P0722- speed output sensor lead failure.

My dealer and Ford have refused to fix my vehicle under the original customer satisfaction program rules for 19n01, and because of a technicality and Fords new extra strict rules, i am being asked to pay out of pocket. I only have 10 days left on the customer satisfaction program and they are giving me the run around. My vin was recalled for unintended transmission downshift safety issue, which has cause accidents and injuries as well as damage to the vehicle. 19n01 is the nhtsa number. The original recall i received in the mail said that the programming would be redone first (19s07) and i did that in late 2019. On february 8th i experienced an unintended downshift event while in motion, on the highway, i was immediately slowed down, 'wrench light' on my dash, as well as zero speedometer, and was in limp mode. This is exactly the symptoms in the recall. Thankfully myself and my truck were on injured. I took my Ford f150 to my independent Ford truck mechanic for a diagnosis, he found dtc P0722. A pdf of his work ticket is attached. He directed me to take it to the Ford dealer in dallas to receive the recall and free repair under the customer satisfaction program. I took my Ford f150 into planet Ford in dallas texas, and they said that Ford change the requirements, they now requires that the code be present in the system, be printed out, for evidence to have the recall covered. They would not accept my mechanics evidence of the code. When they checked my f150, they claimed the code was no longer in the system therefore they could not fix it under the customer satisfaction program. I told them my Ford truck mechanic saw the code, they are very familiar with him and his independent shop, and they said it didn't matter, Ford changed the rules on them. 2011 FORD F-150 with 170000. miles

My 2011 Ford f150 3.5 l ecoboost has suffered a problematic output shaft speed sensor issue (error code P0722) where my truck will suddenly downshift to 1st gear. The speedometer shows me going 'zero' and the odometer shows dashes instead of the mileage. A couple times i was going highway speeds when the downshift happened causing a lot of concern for my family's safety! I researched this and learned there was a recall for this problem but only if the truck was manufactured in dearborn or kansas city, which mine was not. (tsb13-6-8) my mechanic now tells me that this problem has grown, that i now need a new transmission. He quoted me $7,500 to fix this. I don't have the money but don't have a choice but to get it fixed. If this problem was only in the two fore-mentioned factories, then why did i suffer the same issue? That makes no sense. I suspect the problem is more widespread then just trucks from dearborn or kc.... I need help, Ford!

While driving, normal conditions, vehicle drops from higher gears to 1st gear. Rear tires locked up, speedometer went crazy. Checked code P0720. Happened multiple occasions. Latest incident, transmission made hard shift, speedometer, odometer and mpg indicator all went dead and the "wrench" icon appeared on the dash display. Read codes, came up with P0720 and P0722. After restarting, all gauges worked. Vehicle was drivable with caution. Researched recall notices, found 16n02 "molded leadframe extended warrantee", but it only covers f150's manufactured on certain dates at certain plants. My transmission is the same type and model number....6r80 as all f150 ecoboost made in 2011 and 2012. I called Ford and they stated my vin did not show up under any recalls, and i was not covered because of "stipulations". I cannot comprehend that Ford will only cover certain criteria, even though the transmission is the same at all manufacturing locations. If a transmission model is faulty, it is faulty regardless of where or when it was installed in the vehicle. I am sure i am not the only one with this issue, and find it disturbing that Ford will allow these vehicles to remain on the road without them fixing them, or worse still, passing off the cost to the owners, many of whom cannot easily fork out the money or time to have them fixed at their expense. This is totally wrong and needs to be addressed as soon as possible. These vehicles with this malfunction occurring are not safe to drive.

While driving on the interstate at 70 mph my speed information screen showed the wrench and the transmission down shifted to a lower gear. I had to pull off the interstate and restart the vehicle after waiting a few minutes. After i restarted the vehicle the check engine light and wrench went out. Subsequent problems have been the transmission will not shift out of gear and the information screen shows the wrench. My local mechanic said the following p codes were present, P0720 and P0722 and advised there was a recall for my specific transmission. When i called Ford they said that even though my transmission was experiencing the same problems as those under recall my specific transmission was not on the recall list.

Driving my 2010 Ford f150 and it downshift driving at around 35 to 40 on a city street. I stopped and shut the truck off. Upon turning it back on i had the check engine light, traction control and the wrench light that put the truck in safe mode. Also the mileage would flash ---- instead of numbers. I took it to midwest superstore in hutchinson, ks and they found codes P0720 & P0722 which lead to the diagnosis being the lead frame needing to be replaced. I was told that the leadframe and value body are one piece and would have to be replace together. I found that 2011-2013 Ford f150 have the exact same problem and a recall 19s07 for this exact issue. I called Ford customer service and informed them that my truck is doing the same exact thing and they will not help due to no recall for this year. Case number [xxx].
