• Recall 68291 [USA]: Separation of the ball stud from the socket of the ball joint housing would allow the control arm to collapse and the wheel to fold in causing loss of steering control, possibly resulting in a crash.
  Qualis automotive is recalling certain aftermarket ball joints sold for use on certain passenger vehicles. The socket may have been excessively hardened which could cause it to crack near the retaining ring groove allowing the ball stud to separate under impact load. The subject ball joints were sold as four part numbers, d10945, d10946, g10945, and g10946. The affected control arms, d10945 and d10946, are stamped with the following dates on the ball joints: 134308, 135708, 100109, 102709, 104109, 105509, 107609, 108909, 110309, 113209, and 116609. The g10945 and g10946 are the same part as the d10945 and d10946 respectively. They are labeled differently depending on the aftermarket customer.

The wall of the flared fitting of the fuel pump is not thick enough to prevent the mating threaded fittings from bottoming out before an adequate seal is achieved. This condition may result in leakage of fuel at the connection of the vehicle fuel line and the fuel pump module assembly.

Silicone material used in manufacture of the flapper valve was out-of-specification, leading to excess swell of the flapper valve restricting the flow of fuel to the fuel pump module.

The adjustment of the cable connecting the console shifter mechanism to the ignition key can cause a trapped key condition which can result in a low force required to depress the shift button. A combination of applying a mis-adjusted release button with a low force attempt to shift out of park with the key in the locked position, can break the connecting pin in the shifter.

  On certain vehicles, the lower lateral arm ball joint can separate due to loss of lubrication. There is a potential for moisture to leak past the protective boot which can cause the ball stud to corrode. This corrosion, acting much like contamination, can also lead to premature wear and separation of the ball joint. This could result in loss of vehicle control and a possible crash. Correction: lower lateral arm ball joints will be inspected for wear and replaced as necessary with newly designed lower lateral arm ball joints. Ball joints that are within the established tolerance will be cleaned and a special sealant will be applied to prevent the intrusion of moisture.

  Note: vehicles equipped with a floor mounted automatic transmission shift lever. A combination of applying a mis-adjusted shifter release button with a low force attempt to shift out of park with the key in the locked position may break the connecting pin in the shifter. If this happens, the "ignition-park" interlock system will not function. Correction: the console shift interlock mechanism will be inspected for proper function. Any vehicles that are not functional after the inspection will have the shift mechanism and cable replaced with a current production "self adjusting" design.

  On certain vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission and a floor-mounted shifter, the ignition-park interlock may become defeated and allow the shifter to be moved out of the park position with the key removed. Correction: dealer will inspect the function of the ignition-park interlock system. Vehicles found with functional interlock systems will have a load-limiting push rod installed into the floor shifter lever.   The manufacturer reports above are based on daimlerchrysler¿s (dc) analysis of model year (my) 1998 (population = 356,384) and 1999 (population = 486,948) ja, jx and lh family subject vehicle data (earlier mys excluded).The population number includes all mys.The precise number of duplicates between odi and dc reports cannot be determined due to missing or incomplete information.The fatality incident involved an elderly person who attempted to stop a roll away vehicle and received fatal injuries.Odi also gathered information on my 1997-99 prowler vehicles in this investigation. The prowler vehicles were manufactured with a different design shifter mechanism (the shift lever is shorter).There are no complaints of prowler interlock failure in odi¿s database, and dc has received no reports either.The prowler is excluded from the recall scope.The investigation involved a condition where the interlock system could fail (or be made inoperative by the operator) during vehicle use, possibly inadvertently.The interlock system is required under fmvss 114.With the transmission in the park position and the ignition key off, the combined action of pressing the shift button and pulling the shift lever rearward may result in the operator overcoming the interlock system and cause the mechanical linkage of the system to disconnect.When this occurs, there is no overt indication to an operator that the system is defeated, and an increased risk of vehicle roll-away exists.Under recall 04v021, dc will replace damaged shift mechanisms, and will install on all vehicles a device which inhibits the operator¿s ability to overcome the interlock and defeat the system.Beginning with my 2000, dc incorporated a brake and transmission shifter interlock (btsi) system into the subject vehicles.Introduction of btsi involved design changes to the shift mechanism, one of which resulted in reduced mechanical advantage (rma) of the shift button.The rma shifter requires increased forces to overcome the interlock system, making the shifter less susceptible to damage.

I have a 1997 chrysler sebring jxi convertible, that the seatbelt are generally useless. Both the passenger and driver seat belts lock and will not retrack, therefore you are not able to use them. This is a safety hazard especially in a convertible. I live in a state where seatbelts are requires, but when they are locked i can not use them. I have not found where the seatbelts have been recalled, shouldn't there be a lifetime guarantee on seatbelts since they are a safety device? Seat belts would not "pull out". At first it only happened sporadically and for short duration. Problem occurred more often until belts have not worked at all for past 2-3 weeks. *tr

I was backing out of a friends driveway in my 1997 chrysler sebring convertible when all of a sudden there was a loud noise and a grinding sound. When i got out to look, it turns out that the front lower ball joint assembly broke in half by the front hub assembly. I then called a tow truck to have my vehicle towed and when the tow company came they informed me this was the 4th chrysler convertible in two months that they have had to tow with the front lower ball joint breaking. I then decided to check for recalls and it turns out there are 2 recalls on this vehicle but when i contacted the loccal chrysler dealership they inform me that there is no recall on my car. How can that be when you list the following recalls 04v021000, 09e056000 and 10e059000 on your website. I am just very thankful that i was not driving at a higher rate of speed when this happened or it could have been serious, like two of the other accidents that happened the tow truck driver shared with me. Two of the other vehicles he towed, the drivers were injured when the ball joint broke and they crashed.

My 1997 sebring convertible oil light came on when i was driving in a heavy rain during rush hour. After stopping at a red light at a major highway intersection, my car died midway through the intersection. My oil pressure sensor wiring is the cause for my fuel pump to cut off as a safety measure for the cars protection but almost cost me my life. After seeing the dealer and looking at online forums, i have found this is common for the 2.7l engine in my car and many other autos made by damlier chrysler. If the 18 wheeler would have not changed lanes i would have died. I am waiting to replace the wiring because this is several hundreds of dollars of work. *tr

While driving a1997 chrys. Sebring convertible across a bridge over a lake, the left front ball joint broke resulting in loss of control. I almost didn't stop before going in the water. Car blocked the highway and a patrolman stayed with me until wrecker arrived . It did major damage to front fender, plastic bumper brakes and wheel. *tr

Sebring convertible interior floods every time it rains the carpet becomes completely soaked and takes days to dry out in the mean time causing a concern about all electrical components under the seats. *tr

Occasionally, the seatbelt on on my 1997 chrysler sebring locks up. When it does, it cannot be extended/pulled out. This has happened numerous times. When it happens, both seatbelts freeze, leading to the conclusion that it is an electrical problem. Sometimes, after waiting a half hour or so, the problem corrects itself. In the meantime, unless i have time to wait, i must drive without the safety of my seatbelt, which not only puts my life at risk, but makes me a lawbreaker and potentially liable for a ticket. I have called several chryler dealers, none of whom admits to having heard of the problem and all of whom want to run expensive tests to diagnose the problem. While driving down a side road at 15 mph, after going through the 2nd of 2 small dips, the front ball joint broke on the 1997 sebring and the car stopped. We got out, saw front wheel turned out at sharp angle, the right front of car dropped. Sheridan police drove by,we made an accident report. After having the car towed 2 blocks, the ins. Co. Was called we contacted phil long chrysler in littleton co. To find price on the part. They asked for vin number and determined there was recall on that vehicle. They said car was fixed once under recall, they wanted to see it. We had it towed there. Bernie said they would at least fix the ball joint. They estimated the damage and called district rep to come see the car. We were called and told district rep said no, they would not fix the car under the recall. We also owed them $100 (diagnostics).We were told by service manager, scott vansickle, there was nothing they could do. The car was 10 years old, had 160,000 miles. [recalled part was fixed at 20,000 miles in 1998.] decision was made by the district rep. And, besides, those parts wear out. I asked for name and number of district rep - chris g. At 1-800-992-1997. I called, was told by alex, after much referral with his supervisor, that car had already been fixed and there was nothing they could do. I told him i wanted to speak with district rep, chris g, he said he was not at that number, they didn't have a district rep there, i needed to go through dealer for that. I asked him for his name, alex, and supervisor's name,ryan.Chrysler's rep, ( chris g.) has offered to do absoluteley nothing to remedy this problem and is unwillling to do anything. I am lucky i was going slow and noone was hurt.This accident could have happened at 65 mph on the freeway and the 3 of us could have been killed. I find it appalling that chrysler claims no responsibility for the fault of this part.

In doing so, he unknowingly depressed the accelerator pedal and the vehicle proceeded to crash into a building. The vehicle was destroyed. Upon impact, the rear windows were blown out due to the severity of the crash. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was filed accordingly. The vehicle was towed to the contacts home. The manufacturer stated that an investigator would inspect the vehicle further and upon doing so, found it unusual that the air bags did not deploy due to the severity of front-end damage. The failure and current mileages were 100,000.

There were no warning indicators prior to the failure. The control arm and axle were replaced on july 11, 2007 for $1,080. The dealer stated that her vin was excluded from recall # 00v421002 (suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint). The current and failure mileages were 135,000.

While driving my 1997 chrysler sebring the car felt as if fell out of car and turned completely off. This happened on a major highway in nothern new jersey and cost several hundred dollars to be towed back to philadelphia. The problem is believed to be with the transmission, but there were no wornign signs and the car only has a little over 76,000 miles on it. My life and the life of the passengers were very much in danger since we were stranded on the highway for several hours until a tow truck arrived. *nm

Odometer functions intermittently. This is a known, common problem, but chrysler has not recalled. It causes problems whenever you need to purchase anything for your vehicle (tires, oil change, parts etc). Please recall and fix this issue! *nm

Known engine problems with chryslers 2.4l - 4 cylinder engines - defective head gaskets. We purchased a new 1997 chrysler sebring jx w/ 2.4l dohc 4 cylinder engine in march of 1998. Vehicle was purchased new and maintained by nalley chrysler in roswell. Vehicle has a little over 19,000 actual miles and should not have any engine problems with this low mileage or use. Vehicle was inspected on several occasions for leaking coolant/oil mixture complained of leaks to service reps on several occasions, nothing found. At last recall - shifter linkage, asked service technician to check for coolant leaks was informed that 2.4l engine will need a new head gasket. Internet searches show many occurrences of problems with this 2.4l engine as heads are made of different material than block and they cool and heat at differing rates causing excessive movement and failure of the head gasket. Chrysler has silently warranted many of these engines because of head gasket failures and known problems and defects. Would request reimbursement or repair. Chrysler rep had denied repair. Class action status should be investigated for these known engine problems. *jb

When the contact went to purchase the part for car the salesman said he was about the 15 person to buy the part. The consumer called chrysler, and they said there was not a problem. He was going to repair the problem. This was the contact daughter's car, and he was concerned for his daughter's safety and those of others. *ak

Dt: the seat belts on drivers and passengers sides do not work properly. The strap will get stuck in the retractor, it will not move. Most of the time on the drivers side it hardly ever works. This started on august 24, 2004. Contacted the dealer they are going to charge to fix it. *ak the consumer thinks that chrysler should replace the seat belts free of charge. *nm

1) the vehicle was parked outside securely (doors and windows closed properly, top closed properly, ignition locked and no keys in the car). 2) after a rain, i happened to walk by the car and heard it making loud strange noises that sounded like speaker amplified electrical arcing. The noise seemed to be coming from everywhere in the vehicle (no apparent point source). Suspecting some type of electrical problem i began pulling fuses with no effect on stopping the noise. I began smelling something burning and disconnected the car battery. The noises stopped immediately and the burning smell dissapated. 3) the dealer advises that there is a drain in the right rear quarter panel of the car that is not working and causes water to enter the passenger compartment. There is an amplfier under the front passenger seat for the infinity sound system that water had entered into. Dealer advises that the failed part must be returned to the manufacturer to get a replacement and that further damage cannot be determined until the replacement part is installed. There are two design defects in this car, one of which is a serious safety concern. The first defect is the rear quarter panel drains that can stop working and flood the car resulting in significant damage.The owner is not made aware of this defect or how to prevent the problem. The second design defect is a safety concern. An amplifier under the passenger seat has no fuse protection whatsoever. If i had not happened by the car when i did, and had not disconnected the car battery, the car was beginning to catch fire (i smelled burning!). This amplifier can malfunction electrically and start an electrical fire in the vehicle without any electrical interupt protection available. Had i not disconnected the battery when i did this car could have caught fire as a result of this lack of any short circuit protection.

Dt: when the consumer attempted to apply the brake, the vehicle continued to accelerate and consequently, the consumer hit another motorist. The vehicle was also jumping out of gear due to the recall on the trans axle floor shifter/ignition park interlock. *jb

Right front lower ball joint fractured and ripped out the drive shaft from the transmission causing loss of steering. A new lower control arm and drive shaft was installed to correct the problem.

Dt: consumer was aware of manufacturer's recall, 967 issued on may 16, 2001. Consumer stated that this recall repairs were never done. On june 23, 2005 she was traveling, through saint clareshores, michigan on i94, got off at exit and made a right turn and vehicle came to a dead stop. Right front tire went into wheel well, which did a lot of body damage. From there mechanic had vehicle towed to garage at waterford auto, in waterford, michigan. Mechanic then called chrysler to find that there was a recall 967 on part that broke. Consumer did not receive a notice, her ex-husband received the notice. Mechanic had vehicle towed to clarkston chrysler 8105 big lake road, po box 1015, clarkston, michigan 48347. Dealer looked at vehicle and said there was a recall, but they needed an investigator from chrysler to look at vehicle. Investigator came out on july 6, 2005. Consumer heard from manufacturer on july 19, 2005. They denied recall repairs because the part had already been replaced by someone else. However they did not have a record of it.*ak

Dt: the seat belt on the passenger seat retracted and will not come out, making it impossible for the passenger to buckle the belt. This occurred about two weeks ago. Vehicle was seen by the dealer, and there would be a charge to the consumer for this repair. *ak *jb

Dt: consumer complained of a vehicle speed control problem. Brake would not work, vehicle revved, and did not stop, vehicle over accelerated, causing it to ram into another vehicle. Ak

It's a constant rattle noisy at the front of the car, when we bougth the car and start driving it we notice the noisy we took the car to the dealer and they said they didn't found anything, didn't drove the car for the last two years, move to dc, start driving the car again and the rattle getting worst i took the car to a mechanic and they said they fix the car i paid almost $900.00 and the problem still there, i took the car to the mechanic 1 month after they fixed, the invoice said 90 days warranty, now they said it's probably another problem, it's the same problem same noisy. I just want my car fixed, for what i paid.

Purchased car on ebay three years ago. No record of accident but looks like it was in an accident. Problem began after a heavy rain when car parked outside. Service engine light comes on, car starts and dies several times, then wont't start for anywhere from an hour to a day or two. No dealer able to find prob. Or get it to throw a code. Problem seemed to disappear last year when we moved to ca and parked car in garage. Then it returned once. Had it towed to dealer and he was unable to find source of prob. Or get it to repeat the problem. Finally got one computer replaced. Brought the car home and it has repeated the problem a few times. Now it is turning on the security light as well as the service engine light, then, suddenly, while i am driving, the guages quit working. I have no idea how fast or how far i am going. This has happened twice this month, both times when we were on a long trip. There seems to be no real correlation of circumstances that could be causing this problem that we can find other than possible moisture relationship. Had to drive from lake tahoe to orange county with no speedometer two weeks ago. It had rained heavily and the car was parked outside. Then it magically "mended itself" during the week and we took it from orange county to palm springs on may 21st. The guages went out shortly after we left home and came on "magically" after we purchased gas in palm springs. Date listed below is most recent. This has been going on intermittently for three years. Has been to dealers in alabama and orange county. I really can't say how many times it has failed, but probably around 30.

Dt: consumer received a recall notice in march for the transaxles floor shifter ignition park interlock. Consumer tried to make an appointment for the dealership. The following saturday the car popped out of gear and hit a pole. The whole front end of the car was totaled. The passenger seat belt did not lock, and the both air bags did not deploy. Chrysler sent someone to look at the car, the chrysler investigator said that everything looked fine. Consumer had to call him back from chrysler after he came and looked at the car. Chrysler investigator sent a letter to the consumer stating that the incident did not look like it was a result of the recall.*ak

On april 23, 2005, my son was traveling to work, about 12:30 in the afternoon, traveling westbound on the 210 freeway. At some point, his left rear tire went flat. His car lost control and spun counterclockwise, across four lanes of traffic, and head on into the center divider. His car continued to spin in the same dirrection and impacted again at the right rear quarterpanel, and the right rear bumper. My son got out of the car, and the chp arrived within ten minutes to have his car towed. I contacted daimler chrysler to let them know what happened and to express my concern. They sent an inspector to the salvage yard. Two weeks later i got a letter from chrysler saying that their recalled upper ball joint had nothing to do with the crash. I had a mechanic examine the vehicle, he had it lifted up with a forklift, and showed me the rack and pinion that was dangling down on the passenger side. He said that since there was no structural damage to the rest of the undercarraige, the broken steering was what caused my son's car to spin out of control, and crash into the median, injuring him, and threatening the other commuters.

Vehicle was parked inside of a garage , it jumped out of gear, and crashed into a parked car. Driver drove vehicle home and will contact the dealer the next day. *ak

Driver & vehicle leaving toll plaza on the dallas north tollway, headed south towards i-635, about 6 pm on incident date. Driver accelerated out of the toll booth, up to about 40-45 mph, and felt a surge in acceleration. Attempted to reduce speed by taking foot from the gas pedal, but there was no reduction in speed. Applied brake, but still no reduction in speed. Pulled hand brake, no reduction. The accelerator seemed to be stuck or hung up. Finally thought to shift into neutral, and at some point the accelerator finally "let go." was able to exit from the tollway. On 635 access road, attempted acceleration again, and again the accelerator seemed to "stick" at about 15 mph. Backed off, and made way slowly to a nissan automotive dealership off 635 in north dallas. There, a service rep looked under the hood and observed the accelerator cable was badly frayed. As the car was unsafe to drive further, called for a tow and had car towed to chrysler dealer in grapevine, tx. The failure of the vehicle to decellerate on a busy and fast-moving tollway at rush hour could have been catatrophic, but due to luck or grace, there was no collision. However, the driver suffered mental and physical anguish, stress, and frank terror during the event. This car had been subject to a recall issued in august 2002, and had been repaired for the defect at the dealer in grapevine. However, the accelerator cable failed anyway. The logical conclusion is that the defect repair was also faulty, or the defect was not repaired properly. Other systems in the vehicle were most likely impacted: brakes and transmission.*ak

Dt: the contact received a recall letter on 3-15-05 concerning the trans axle floor shifter ignition/park interlock she called at the end of march or the beginning of april and made an appointment to have vehicle checked. On 5-7-05, before the scheduled appointment, the vehicle popped out of gear and hit a pole. And the estimated damage was $8,700. On 5-12-05 chrysler sent an investigator to check the vehicle . The consumer was not present at the inspection, but someone else who was at the inspection claimed that the investigator tried to start the car and it wouldn't start. He did not think the trans axle floor shifter ignition/park interlock had anything to do with the crash. The consumer did not agree, stating that the driver and the passenger were injured in the crash. Neither the seat belts nor the air bags worked in the crash.*ak

The brakes were not operating and were making noise when they were applied. Consumer picked up the vehicle after repairs, and while pulling out the brakes failed once again. Took vehicle to dealer for repairs again, and results showed that the rotors were warped. *ak

While pulling inside the parking lot vehicle collaspsed to the ground. Driver noticed that right side collasped,but the left side was normal. Driver had the vehicle towed to the residence, and then contacted a mechanic. The mechanic determined that the right upper ball joints needed to be replaced due to corrosion. *ak

Vehicle experienced sudden acceleration. Owner was driving to an intersection. Upon approaching the intersection, driver applied the brakes and the vehicle began to accelerate. Although, the driver had there foot on the brake. *ak

The transmission has been acting up since the car hit around 57,000 miles. I have had the transmission serviced, however, the engine keeps racing and the speed doesn't keep up. The car now has 87,000 miles on it and is slipping again. *jb

Engine check light illuminated, indicating a malfunction within system, cause unknown.Dealer replaced the oxygen sensor which did not correct the problem. I had the oxygen sensor replaced again along with a exhaust manifold- still did not correct the problem. Check engine light on again! Driving at about 65mph on busy highways the car just shuts down. While driving horn failed. Consumer took vehicle to the dealership on june 2004. Dealership fixed it, but three days later horn failed again. Technician disconnected the horn, and stated there was short circuit in the front air bags. To fix the horn dealer needed to replace the air bag mechanism at consumer's expense of $1,700. *ak

There hasn't been an acccident that has happened but the unsafe part about this car is that everone of the lugs:nuts on the wheels were not the correct lugs:nuts for the car and therefore my wheels were not on my car securely. I have made road trips to florida and alabama with my car being very unsafe.*ak

While driving at any speed the vehicle's floor mat got tangled into the steering mechanism because there is no cover for that part. As a result, the steering mechanism failed. Please provide additional information. *la

I have a 97 chrysler sebring convertible jx. Recently the threading had been peeling away around the convertible top. I submitted several complaints on the net, local news station, and with daimlerchrysler. In those complaints i had mentioned concern of my back window possibly flying out the back or worse yet, falling in on my 2 year old son in his car seat!!!! About 3 or 4 weeks later, my husband was getting in the car after work and in a parked position decided to put the top down (since the air conditioner stopped working about a year prior) to the convertible, he then heard a crack and as soon as looking back the whole window shattered in over 1000 pieces all in the backseat and the hub truck area and my son's carseat!!!! My worst nightmare had come true. I had nearly brainstormed that the window would fly out the back or that it could fall in! Thank you jesus, my son was not in the car!!!! I have contacted chrysler wich did nothing but charted my complaint and is probably setting in the database with no action... This really concerns me... I don't know where else to turn. My insurance said that i needed to meet my 500 dollar deductible in order for them to take care of the rest of the bill, which will only apply to a back window... Not a convertible top... Hello, since the top is still unraveling this new back window that they are talking about only has a couple of days before the same thing happens again! My guess, since the threading was already coming loose it caused the back window to go off track unknowingly... Then when my husband put the top down it was not positioned correctly causing the window to be in the way of the convertible top reclining. Driver side seat belt failed to release from the retracting position, so the buckle could not be fastened. Dealership indicated that the problem may be due to a defective retractor. Dealership had to take apart the entire driver side seat to inspect the retractor.*ak

While driving between 25 to 30 mph and without any warning automatic transmission failed. Towed vehicle to the independent shop, and technician determined a new transmission was needed. *ak

Design defect - rear window defogger - the original equipment rear window defogger on my 1997 chrysler sebring stopped working. The wire attaching the defogger to the electrical system has become detached. It had been reattached by the dealer twice, but on the third occasion the dealer advised that it could not be fixed. It is apparently reattached with some kind of glue. I was advised that if i wanted to get the defogger to work i would need to install a new rear window at a cost of over $800. The new sebring convertible;e uses a wire with a plug to attach the rear window defogger to the vehicle's electrical system. Chrysler appears to have recognized the design defect and provided a fix, although not to owners of 1997 sebring convertibles. Note: this design defect appears to be a safety defect that causes a dangerous condition when the defogger fails, i.E., in rainy or snowy conditions the visibility out of the rear window is dangerously reduced. *nm

The steering column and rack and pinion broke while driving the car at a speed of 35 - 40 and as a result, my husband had no control of the steering and we veered across the lane of the on-coming traffic and hit a light pole. *jb

While driving at approximately 45 mph, noticed smoke coming from the rear of vehicle. Pulled vehicle over to side of road and checked under the hood. Head gaskets were leaking oil from the engine. Drove vehicle to dealership, and mechanic confirmed what problem was. Had not had head gaskets repaired. *ak

Dealer mechanic says transmission must be replaced with less than 80,000 miles on the car. Also stated that this is a typical problem at this mileage to the tune of over $2,000. 1997 chrysler sebring lxi as i was driving down the freeway at approximately 75 - 80 mph, i felt this really hard jerk in my car where i had to rapidly grab the steering wheel with both my hands to control the car. The jerk slightly made my car steer to the right and the person on the right of me had to move out of the way. Luckily nothing happened, but what if something would of. Chrysler needs to really pay attention to these things and make sure that everything is safe, especially when it comes to a person's safety. I consider this bad business practice because chrysler does nothing to fix this problem to the already existing chrysler car buyers. Good business practice is keeping the client happy, and this goal is not being met by this company. In short, my '97 sebring convt. (86,000 mi) is on its 3rd starter, needs a new fuel gauge & switch to light fog lamps (problem for va. Safety insp.). Also tach, speedometer, & other gauges have stopped functioning temporaily while car is moving. *jb

When i purchased my car, i purchased it used. I noticed the engine light was on. I was then informed by the dealer that there was a short or a sensor problem. I then took my car to dealership to have them check it out. I was informed that it was a sensor light burn out, and that is was not getting oxygen to the engine. I paid $250. On a tuesday to get that fixed. That wednesday the light was back on. I brought the car back down to the dealership. I was then informed that there is about 3 sensors in the engine, and another one has gone out. And it will cost me another $250. To replace that one. This was all in a 2 day span. I would like to know if there is anything that i can do about this, or will i have to keep paying till all the sensors are replaced, and how will i know if they all have been replaced. Very upset costumer. And i work for chrysler, this is terrible business. *la

This car is garbage! I have had water leaks, had to replace complete fabric interior! The battery light now refuses to go off along with the engine light. I have gone through 4 batteries in a year, have replace the alternator and i still have problems. Not one shop, along with a dealer, can understand why this car will not run properly. The dealer who sold me the car told me it was too late for him to do anything about it. I also have the same problem as everyone else with the seat belt, drivers side. It no longer connects together. Dealer who sold me car stated the car was a 6 cylinder as does my title, found out recently that car is only 4 cylinder. *nlm

The converible roof is unravelling at the seams, making it unsightly and dangerous. I had water in my foor in the back seats and an upholstery shop discover a defect in the manufacture of the body causing the leak. It has been successfully fixed. But the soft top roof to be replaced would cost $1250-. It is my observation that there are a lot of convertibles during the model years of 1997 (mine) and other years (1998- ?). I called chrysler and they noted my complaint but haven't addressed the problem to my knowledge. I think this should be a recall as i see it on many converibles. What if one of these tops were to tear loose? That's my concern!!

There is a recall listed on your website (nhtsa campaign id #98v183000) in regards to a key issue. My vehicle is a 1997 chrysler sebring - 87000 original miles, i am the original owner and chrysler is refusing to honor this recall, saying that my car is out of warranty and that the recall did not apply to my specific vin# - please help. *jb

The headlight plastic lenses deteriorated, which caused the them to excessively fogged. Consumer had to utilize the high beams in order to see the road way at night. *jb

Driving on highway transmission went and fillings from transmission got into radiator, had to replace both and chrysler dealer and zone office refused to help with cost, they told me car was out of warranty. My transmission is starting to fail at 62,000 miles. Why? My water pump was recently replaced. Then my engine light went on and the plugs and wires had to be replaced and the mechanic told me the transmission is staring to go. I have noticed that the engine is racing but the car is having a difficult time keeping up with the engine. Sure sign.

I have called the chrysler corporation about the draining holes of my sebring and they have said there is no problem. I've asked a couple of people and they said that the holes are too small. My car will get destroyed at this rate. When it was still under warranty they could not figure out the problem at the dealer they thought it was from the convertible top or the seals of the windows. Now i know what the problem is but they say there are no recalls on this problem. I don't know what to do anymore.

While driving at any speed and when shifting from first to second gear vehicle stalled. Consumer had a certified mechanic check the vehicle, and was told that transmission needed to be replaced.*ak

Driving at approx. 15 mph the steering system failed/locked on my car. The car was towed to the dealer on 10/28/02, and was initially diagnosed a "failure of the power steering pump". The dealer replaced the pump, and during the mechanic testing found that the newly replaced pump also immediately failed and steering again locked. The dealer then diagnosed the problem as being a total failure of the "rack" which needed replacement as it had "failed and was contaminating the pumps". Both the power steering rack and power steering pump was replaced at a cost to me of $1728.33 parts/labor. The dealer service representative admitted to me that they had seen such failures before, and that the failure was not a result of my maintainence of this vehicle. In fact, i have vigorously maintained the vehicle with this dealer since its purchase on 6/30/97 - and they have performed all scheduled minor and major services. Yet, since i was just outside of the 5 year/50k mile warranty, the dealer refused to cover any of the labor/parts charges for the replacement. I then contacted damiler chrylser's customer service center on this matter. Daimler chrysler confirmed that there were no vehicle recalls for rack/pump failures, and held no responsibility. They were uninterested in any discussion of defects, or risk if the failures occurred at highway speeds. If my failure had occurred under those circumstances, rather than on a residential street, there would have been injuries or fatalities since there was no ability to turn or control the steering of the vehicle. Chrysler may not be interested in customer satisfaction, but i would have hoped that they would have some concern for such dangerous failures. Dt

We had to replace the oxygen sensors to be able to get the engine light off and then the ignition fuses started to burn out. They only burn out when you turn right. It also happened at a low speed of 35 miles per hour. Can you tell me what the problem is. Nlm

The driver's side seatbelt twisted on the spool and will not retract. Because the car is a convertible the seatbelt unit is located in the seat. There is no way to get at the seatbelt unit to unjam the spool. The seatbelt is unuseable. I called the dealership where i purchased the car and they told me they can't repair seatbelts they must be replaced and it will cost me $345.00. The seat must be removed in order to get to the seatbelt unit. I live in ny, with a mandatory seat belt law. I can not afford $345.00 at this time. I don't understand how a seatbelt design does not allow for the possibility that the belt will twist and jam upon retracting. I am having the same problem with the passenger side, however i have been fortunate enough that i have caught it before it jammed. Consumer received nhtsa recall notice 00v421002000/manufacturer's recall 967. Vehicle was starting to make a rattling noise, and consumer decided to have it checked out. Dealer found no problem, and stated that ball joints were okay, and didn't need to be repaired. Rattling noise got worse, and consumer went to a mechanic who would not let vehicle leave the lot because ball joints were defective, and vehicle could easily lose steering. Vehicle was stopped in traffic when it was hit from behind by another vehicle driving about 40-50 mph. Vehicle was pushed into vehicle in front.Upon impact, neither airbag deployed. Crashed head on at 50 mph on a road of 55 mph into direct frontal impact of a gaurd rail ,frontal section of the car is highly damaged and air bags never deployed upon impact on eith driver or passanger side, both victiums were wearing seat belts at the time but did substain many bruises on face, head, shoulders, chest and legs and abdomone. To my knowledge and of other auto body repair specialist air bags are defective and the sensors should have gone off at time of deep impact and should have deployed.

Right outer tie rod end broke completely away and right wheel pivoted nearly perpendicular to left wheel. Only traveling 5 mph at time of incident . A higher normal speed could have resulted in dammage or injury or fatality. Car has only 34,400 miles and has been well maintained. Repair was made by replacing both right tie rod end{broken} and left tie rod end badly worn and alignment. These tie rod ends are non lubricatable. It is highly unusual for this specific problem to occur in a vehicle with such low mileage and that has never been operated in adverse conditions that would contribute to such a failure. Two acquaintances of mine have had front axles break on newer chrysler minivans. Could there be a common supplier of front end parts providing defective metals or common engineering flaws? Chryslers representative was totally unsympathetic to my problem/complaint. *ak

1997 sebring's recalled for this reason. When i contacted chrysler they said this particular car did not have a recall. Why, then, did this happen to my car. I reported the front end of the car twice. The first time, when the car was under warranty, nothing was wrong with it. The second time, not under warranty, there was 3,500 worth of damage. The dealer told chrysler it was caused by an accident. I never had an accident in this car. *akperhaps, before i owned it?

Reported noises to dealership in right tire and steering wheel. They first told me they could not find any problems. Took it back because noise got worse. They finally found that the steering rack was broken. They claimed to have fixed the problem. About 1 1/2 weeks later was turning corner at busy intersection. Right wheel turned inward and locked. Spun around in the middle of the street. Luckly no one was hurt. Although they say that this time it was the steering column. In passing a vehicle the accelerator cable broke and the throttle jammed in the full on position. This caused the car to dramatically increase speed on a busy highway. I shifted the car into neutral, and the engine raced to over 7000 rpm. I then had to turn off the engine to stop the racing. The automatic gas cut off did not appear to work. I ended up in the grassy mediam to avoid hitting cars as i had little braking and steering power. Upon restarting the car it appeared to work and i was able to get almost home when it happened again. The pedal was full open and when i shut the car off, the automatic cut off apparently worked as the car wouldn't start again. It was towed to a service station. I am told the cable was seriously frayed which caused it to jam in the open position. I was lucky to have not had an accident and was grateful my daughter or wife were not driving.

The cruise control application does not consistently follow the comands as described on page 66 of the owners manual. (1) the cruise will not regularly set a desired speed, unless the cancel button is pressed following the on/off button. (2) after depressing the brake pedal to de-activate a speed setting, the resume button ignors the prior setting speed and continues to accelerate. (3) while pressing and holding the set/coast button, the speed accelerates. *ak

On the date mentioned, i was driving at about 45mph when the accelerator cable failed and caused the vehicle to accelerate out of control. The vehicle raced to about 60 mph even while i used the brakes to attempt to slow down. After a few minutes i knew i had to put the car in neutral and shut it off to stop the car.In the meantime i had to avoid other cars and stoplights as i couldn't stop. The short use of my brakes caused a fire and i put out with an extinguisher. Fire dept. Was called. No warranty, my big bill. I have had 8 tire failures during 15000miles of driving. Been to goodyear dealer 56 times and car dealer 6 times. Both say there is nothjing wrong, but aaa truck drivers all say it is faulty rims on the sebring. I have read of dozens of similar problems on the nhtsa web sitre. Took copies to dealer who disputes the validity of persons' report to nhtsa. I have spoked to chrysler hotline 3 times and goodyear's once.All say there is no reported problem and to go to dealer. I told dealers i am afraid to drive this car on a freeway. The car has been farther than 30 miles from home. Most occurences happened during the warranty but dealer now says it is past warranty. I suspect cvhrysler is hiding information from other sebring owners and there have been no deaths from flat tires, so there has been no recall. I will continue to contact chrysler to get total failures of the tires on the sebrings. Nhtsa has reports on wheel problems on 1998 and 1999 sebrings. Interior rearview mirror failure of automatic chromatic mirror. Interior liquid leaked into internal workings of mirror while car was sitting. Interior surface of mirror fogged/dirty and difficult to use during day. During night the mirror was not usable under any conditions and there was no read view at night except for glare. There is no 'manual' mode on this mirror and hand adjustment was useless. A service rep at hollywood-chrysler mentioned that a 1999 model with 1000 miles on it has its mirror replaced that morning (under warranty.)

Flagged safety issue-hi note and lo note horns repeat failures after driving vehicle at 40-50mph in 2-3 days of heavy rain one or both horn fail. Dealer has replaced horns willingly,no acknowledgment from chrysler.Dealer has mounted left horn to right mounting and mountedright horn to left mounting.Horn bodies now face rearward of vehicle in an attempt to prevent rain water being jammed up horn assemblies and rusting horn internal parts. Horn tone is reduced by about 7 percent,but better 93percent horns than none,or next to none.Recommend designing new arraigement for this vehicle.

Mirrors & plastic parts of trunk are faded - a gray color. The sun roof visor keeps coming off track. There is a noise in the fuel system coming from underneath the back seat. Sounds like a high pitched whine. Cd player stopped accepting cds. There is a whistling noise & leak from the passenger side window (up from the mirror). *ak

Trunk and trunk lid assembly with waterproof seals have failed repeatedly. Seals, 3rd taillight assembly, side weatherstrip, deck lid weather strip, top weather strip have been replaced repeatedly. New carpet in trunk, new tail light assemblies have been replaced repeatedly. Trunk continues to leak. Drain holes have been cleared repeatedly. Problem can not be fixed by dealership. Another appt. Is scheduled for this month. Water is standing in trunk even when there has been no rain for days/weeks.

We have had many other similar problems with this car since ownership. We missed the time limit on lemon law by 2,000 mi. And arbitration sais that this does not impare our driving the car and the dealer sais that we should be thankful that it is not engine trouble, also you have to expect problems with a new car. Chrysler has never aknowledged my letters.

On 3/18/98, at 12,757 miles - front left & right rotors replaced, on 9/15/98, at 19,501 miles, front left & right rotors replaced, on 3/4/99 at 25,628 miles, all rotors replaced, on 6/24/99 at 29,499 miles, all rotors resurfaced, on 11/11/99 at 34,121 brake light on, low fluid, on 4/10/00 at 38,441 master cylinder replaced and all rotors resurfaced, on 11/10/00 at 44,958 scheduled another appt with dealer for brake work - chrysler has yet to recall this vehicles brakes - there are 24 brake complaints on 1997 sebrings currently filed with nhtsa. *ak

Purchased 1997 chrysler sebring convertible. In 1998 the instrument cluster started to fail intermittently. The tachometer, and odometer fade in and out, out mostly. While driving 35 mph the vehicle had a direct frontal impact with a truck and both driver's and passenger's air bags did not deploy. Manufacturer stated due to not enough deceleration it did not trigger the sensor, but the vehicle was totalled in front end. *ak

Whenever the brakes were in use the calipers failed to open. Vehicle would stop until noise indicated a problem with brakes. Would take to dealership & mechanic replaced brakes. The brake problem happened at least 5 times so far. Last time brakes just gave way & needed to use emergency brakes to stop vehicle. On 5th set of brakes. Also, remote control does not work/ both front windows glass distorted/replaced spark plugs/replaced transmission interlock system/replaced noisy front end/replaced starter, and realigned driver's side door hinge.

Donut size wheel is only for slow speed and a few miles, if the temporary spare is used for a length period of time it will blow.

The defective braking system warped out several times. Had replaced the braking system 4 times. Had a 1996 sebring had the same problem, had to replace braking system 6 times. Dealer said the 1997 sebring had a new braking system, but the problem is still occurring. Dealer cannot determine problem. *ak

Vehicle stationary, convertible top went down twice; on 3rd time, went down okay, but going up, it kept going. Turned top motor off but it kept running. Wiring harnes burned. Tail & dash lights flashed quickly & trunk lid popped open.

Vehicle interior floods during moderate to heavy rainfall.*mr in light of the number of problems, the cost of repairs the consumer has incurred on what is apparently a design flaw on parts that have no mechanical wear, is unbearable. Three months after purchase the consumer noticed that the door panel was loose and had a body shop push it back in place, a few months later while driving the entire door panel came off the vehicle almost hitting another vehicle, dealer claimed that this happened to all 1997 sebrings but they refused to replace panel because the warranty was expired. At any time, either when i first started the car or while driving digital odometer goes blank and the tachometer falls to 0 rpm. This occurs everytime i drive the car. Sometimes they will come back on and sometimes they won't. Also, even though the odometer has went blank, it continues to count the milage of the car.

Turn signal module failed.

The problem with the wheels on my sebring lxi is that they are all warped. I noticed the car had a bad vibration and when i went to get new tires installed, the tire dealer said that all four wheels were warped. The car shimmies all over the road at any speed. I have seen many complaints on the internet about this problem. There are wheel companies on ebay advertising replacement wheels for the lxi, saying "replacement wheels for the warp prone sebring lxi wheels". I have contacted chrysler about my problem and they said the car was out of warranty. The wheel manufacturer, weld wheels, has not responded to my email attempts.*ak

My car has had several failures in almost every aspect of the car. It has had 4 electrical failures, 3 brake failures, 4 mechanical, and 7 other problems. Basically the car has been a complete loss. Regardless of fuel level gas tank will only receive a gallon of gas and then the system shuts down, and also the gas will spill out, cause unknown. Please give any further details. *ak

When brakes are applied pedal goes to the floor and then returns. Problem has occurred 3 times. Dealers replaced brake rotors master cylinder and pads, but problem remains. *ak

Vehicle rear ended another vehicle at about 25 to 30mph and neither driver's side nor passenger's side airbags deployed. Dealer has vehicle now. *ak

When driving at 65mph there would be a lot of noise. Vehicle not controllable; would drif, an d pull to right only. *ak

Driver's seat belt does not release from retracting mechanism ,causing seat belt to become inoperable. Please give any further details.*ak

Tires are deflating and rolling off wheels due to a problem with rim. *ak the consumer indicated that 12 tires deflated, but the dealer says it happens only to this vehicle. (goodyear tire p215/50r17 and dot # m6pclnwr0200). *yh

Sway bar located too close to tire that keeps back end stable. Back tires rub against sway arm. Also, can't put finger between sway bar and tire. Contacted dealer, and was told to bring vehicle in.*ak

Consumer stated that driver and passenger side seatbelts in front would not release from the seat, seatbelts lock in place preventing driver and passenger from wearing seat belts, consumer is concerned that air bag will not function if in an accident. Dealer contacted. Nlm *tt

Consumer states she received a recall notice for her auto regarding the driver control cable. She called the dealer and took her auto to the dealer only to be told that they did not have the part, and to call back in two weeks. Consumer states she called and went back and then no one knew what she was talking about. She took her auto to quality dodge at 200 n main street, tooele, ut 435-882-2000. She is afraid that she will be in an accident if her control cable breaks.*jb

Nhtsa recall campaign 02v186000 concerning accelerator cable; received recall notice in the mail and contacted dealership over a month ago. Owner was informed by service department that there were no parts available to repair the recall. Owner has checked back with service department several weeks later, on 9-12-02, still no parts, the consumer called the maunfacturer on the same day then the local dealer set up an appointment and replaced the part. *ak

The consumer received a recall notice concerning the throttle arm sticking. The dealer did not perform the recall repairs due to lack of parts. *ak *jb *ts

While traveling at 25 mph steering became very difficult to steer, and made a strange noise. Took vehicle to mechanic, and the mechanic stated tha t lower lateral ball joint failed. *ak

While turning in either direction vehicle made a clicking noise. Vehicle was taken to the dealer, who discovered that right front control arm was loose. *ak

Problems with vehicle throttle control cable.*mr the consumer received a recall notice regarding the throttle cable. The consumer was told the part had not arrived and when it did arrive the consumer would get a call, the consumer had to call the dealer back and found out the part had arrived, but no one called to let the consumer know. The dealer stated someone would come to the consumer's home, however no one ever called to confirm. *jb *nlm

Consumer states that the trunk lid does not lock securely in the up position when opened. Consumer opened lid to retrieve items from trunk, but the lid fell down hitting consumer on the head.

My local dealer replaced the subject computer at a cost to me of $300. This was the result of a "good will" extension of the manufacturers warrantee. Several other owners of these cars have had this computer fail. *ak

Driver side seat belt retracts halfway back to the spool. Seat belt is malfuctioning which can cause belt to loosen tension or lock up and not retract to secure passenger. Dealer is aware. Please provide more information.*ak

Passenger side seat belt is twisted in fabric and will not retract outward. Seat can't be occupied until fixed. Dealer was not notified. *ak consumer stated that driver's side belt was loose and does not fully retract. The vehicle had a recall on full throttle cable however, consumer did not mention if a problem still existed.*yh
