NHTSA Mandated Recalls
  • Recall 121000 [USA]: Without the brake lamp illuminating during the vehicle start up bulb-function check, the driver has no confirmation that the lamp is working and therefore may not know whether or not the lamp will illuminate if the brake fluid level is low. if the operator is unaware that the vehicle has low brake fluid, there would be an increased risk of a crash.
Daimler vans usa, llc (dvusa) is recalling certain model year 2003-2006 dodge and freightliner sprinter 2500 and 3500 vans manufactured june 30, 2003, to august 31, 2006. The instrument cluster on the affected vehicles fails to illuminate the brake warning lamp in the instrument cluster during the vehicle start up bulb-function check. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) number 105, "hydraulic and electric brake systems."
dvusa will notify owners, and dvusa and dodge dealers will correct the instrument cluster software, as necessary, free of charge. An interim notification was sent to owners on january 6, 2017. A second notice will be mailed to owners once the remedy becomes available. The recall began on july 27, 2017. Owners may contact dvusa customer service at 1-770-705-2070.

  • Recall 89020 [USA]: The switching contacts of the lamp may cause a short circuit of the rear lamp increasing the risk of a fire.
On certain trucks equipped with rear air conditioning system, the interior lamp is equipped with an 18w lamp and a scattering lens. In extremely hot and humid conditions, the combination of heat and humidity, and the heat from the lamp due to extreme long term operation, can distort the scattering lens.
dealers will replace the rear interior lamps free of charge with a modified version which is not subject to the impacts of heat and humidity. The recall began on december 17, 2007. Owners may contact daimlerchrysler manufacturing international at 1-843-695-5041.

  • Recall 2016625 [Canada]: Brakes
Certain vehicles equipped with an anti-lock brake system (abs) and without electronic stability control (esc) may not comply with canada motor vehicle safety standard (cmvss) 105 - hydraulic and electric brake systems. The brake system indicator tell-tale may not illuminate during the lamp function check when the ignition is initially turned to the “on” (run) position, which is contrary to the requirements of the standard. Correction: dealers will correct the coding of the instrument cluster software.

  • Recall 2005018 [Canada]: Wheels
On certain vehicle equipped with 16 inch tires and operated in hot ambient conditions, the rubber and metal portions of the valve stem may experience separation or cracking. This condition may lead to loss of air pressure at the valve stem and subsequent rapid loss of pressure in the tire that could result in a loss of vehicle directional control with minimal advance warning. Correction: dealers will replace the tire valve stems.

  • Recall 2007346 [Canada]: Electrical
On certain vehicles equipped with a rear air conditioning system, the rear interior light units, mounted in the rear air conditioning duct work, may overheat. In certain conditions, heat from the bulb, due to long term operation, can cause the lens to distort. As a result, the electrical contacts could cause a short circuit, which may lead to a vehicle fire. Correction: dealers will replace the rear interior lamps with a modified version that contains lower wattage bulbs.

Known Recall Investigations
  • Tire valve failure investigation as of 20040921

Odi opened pe04-066 to investigate five complaints alleging tire valve failure in my 2003-04 subject vehicles. Some of the complaints alleged multiple tire valve failures for a single vehicle. On december 16, 2004, daimlerchrysler manufacturing international (dcmi) notified nhtsa of a safety defect in approximately 23,000 my 2002-05 sprinter 2500 vehicles equipped with tr-600 tire valves produced by alligator ventilfabrick gmbh (recall 04v-600).The notification identified the chemical specification of the rubber components and an unstable supplier production process, which resulted in inadequate mixing of the rubber components, as the factors contributing to this defect. As a result of these factors, cracks can develop within the rubber part or between the metal and the rubber parts of the valve stem, which can lead to a loss of air pressure at the valve stem and may pose a risk to motor vehicle safety.Although the tr-600 tire valve is used only on the 2500 series subject vehicles with 16 inch tires, dcmi will conduct a safety recall for all sprinter 2500 vehicles sold in the u.S. To replace the current tire valves with a tr-600 valve, which uses a single rubber component for the valves. All 24 complaints and all 43 warranty claims identified in this investigation involved my 2002-04 sprinter 2500 vehicles, which comprise approximately 84 percent of the subject vehicle population.

The t21 recall has completely ruined my perfectly maintained and stable work vehicle. Initially after having the recall done it left my battery dead as it left components running...It has been in and out of the shop for 5 months since the recall they keep throwing fixes at it which never seem to work! They have replaced the instrument cluster, egr, 2 pcms, and numerous other parts. It still has no power and surges and is blowing black smoke out of the exhaust. There needs to be a recall for the t21 recall as my van is still broken and no can seem to fix it. I am disappointed you would force a recall without proper investigation first. My van is useless now and its cost me 1000's of dollars in lost work!

I did the t21 recall update to the pcm and have had check engine light on, then it died and had it towed to the greatest sprinter mechanics in my area. This was after the dealership cleared codes the first time my check engine light came on. Towing from insurance made me pay the difference in mileage from the dealership. Had t21 recall finished june 22, 2018, and again today after picking my van up from my trusted mechanics thursday( who only work on sprinters and could not find the issue) and again check engine light comes on. I have had no issues with my van until this stupid update.. I will never trust your recalls ever again. From what i am reading, you guys don't care of the cost and burden it puts on us who have complications after this pcm update. So, when me and my quadriplegic son get stuck somewhere, are you going to help us? Pathetic company and stupid recall. Nothing like driving three times since the update to take my time out of my day, stress about not having an accessible vehicle for our use, and everybody shrugging their shoulders. Yes, simply accelerating from a stop light must be really hard on my engine with only 124k miles.! What are you going to do to help those of us with manufacturing vins up to july of 2004? You are obviously thinking all encompassing pcm updates are needed but how about you think about the difference in models from within the year. Or is that too much thinking from your own brain and the computer didn't tell you what to do?

Received t-21 recall notice for 2004 sprinter 2500. Took to dealership we were sent to by dodge (fiat). Dealership did the required software upgrade to the ecu - result was that the entire electrical system is trashed. They replaced 2 modules and that did not fix the problem. Pcm is not shutting down the modules and relays and all circuits stay open after the engine is shut off. This is causing the battery to be completely drained in a short time period. Our van is useless to us - can't drive it anywhere and dodge (we filed a complaint over 4 weeks ago) and the dealership refuse to fix the problem. Dealership wanted $2,600 to replace the pcm and they were not certain that will fix the problem. They also never cleared the codes as required by the recall (for the mass air flow sensor issue). We have invested a tremendous amount of time (had to take the van back to dealership three times already) and don't know what else to do.

The dodge dealer did the t21 emission recall on 12/08/2017. Eversince this recall service my vehicle has been rendered in-operable with two problems. (1) the battery dies overnight. I have already replaced to new battery with same problem. (2) the egr valve makes buzzing noise with the car off. I have replaced the egr valve with new one with same problem. It has been five month and now dodge says they need to replace another part (instrument cluster controller), but dodge does not take any responsibility for these damages or how or when my car will leave the dealer. Please look into this.

When i am driving a freeway speed this vehicle loses power and the speed drops to about 40 mph. This happens randomly. I have had this truck into the dealer several times. They have replaced the main computer, o2 sensors the resonator and they cannot find the problem. This problem started when the vehicle had approx. 95000 miles on it. We have been dealing with this intermittent problem for over a year and it has become a real safety issue when you are trying to get to the side of the road. When you pull over you can shut the vehicle off and restart it and it will reset the motor and run fine until it happens again. This is happening 3-4 times a day now and i am at a loss of how to solve this problem. From what i have read this is a big problem with other sprinter owners. *tr

Driving at freeway speed the vehicle losses power and the speed decreases to about 40 mph. I can pull over and turn of the motor for about 10 seconds and start up and the vehicle will reset and run fine until it does it again randomly. This is very dangerous especially when you are in the left hand lane and you are trying to get to a safe place to pull over. This has happened several times and i have replaced the turbo resonator 3 time on this truck. This is a plastic part and the body cracks from the vibration and pressure. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2004 dodge sprinter 2500. The contact stated that the head lamp sensor turned white abnormally, causing limited illumination when driving at night. The contact also noticed that the glow plug control warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who advised the contact that in order to complete the repair, they required special tools in which they did not have. As a result, the contact performed the repairs by replacing the glow plug control. The manufacturer had not been notified of the failure. The current mileage was 29,300 and the failure mileage was 29,000.

2004 dodge sprinter - the braking system stiffens up (power brake) if i push the pedal hard especially when i back up the vehicle. It's like the booster has frozen solid and the brake pedal can't travel all the way down. If i let the vehicle sit for a while (1 hr) it will get back to normal. This is a repeat incident and started in the first year but i did not pay too much attention since i did not understand what happened and the problem disappeared for a while. But lately is reappearing more frequently. No accident yet. Nothing has been done to correct the failure. The vehicle is out of warranty by now 66,000 miles. Original equipment steel wheel on 2004 dodge sprinter broke along "spokes". This could be a life threatening condition at highway speeds or in a loaded van. I noticed a noise coming from the wheel and took it to a shop where they could find nothing wrong because the cracks in the wheel are very difficult to detect unless inspected very closely. The wheel that failed was never abused or mistreated in any way prior to failure. I still have the broken wheel if you wish to inspect it. I am now running on the spare. Should i replace all 4 wheels on this van? Will the others also fail? Are all 2004 sprinter wheels this dangerous? *tr

While traveling on i-70 from frederick to cumberland in 2004 dodge sprinter pleasure-way rv, noticed a revving in the engine. Going up first steep mountain, the engine dropped 10 mph from 65 to 55. Drove through hagerstown and got on i-68 to cumberland. Going up that mountain, the rv lost power in every gear and went into "limp home" mode. Pulled off the highway and called tow truck. Took to sprinter repair shop who knew exactly what the problem was - turbo resonator. Took approximately .7 of an hour to replace with a new part. This should be a recall. In researching the issue - this has happened to many people. It is not safe to be climbing mountains with tractor trailer and vehicle traffic and have this happen. *tr

Engine stalls intermittently, with or without a/c. Can happen at any time after start up and at any speed without warning. Sometimes can happen after vehicle goes over a bump (even small ones), during turns, moving off from a traffic light. This is highly dangerous. Dealer did install kit to prevent potential stalling due to operation of heavy duty rear a/c during turns (known problem) but no effect. Engine restarts without hesitation after ignition key is switched off and then turned on. Dealer has carried out an extensive electrical check with no results and cannot duplicate event. *tr

We own two dodge sprinters 2500. Years 2004 and 2006. We have owned both for a little more than a year. We have broken six winshields. We have looked for stronger windshields none are made.{ per ppg} we have had installs done by factory and private. The window fames have been inspected for defects and none were found. We feel that this unacceptable and needs to be fixed. I have contacted dodge and they said that they will do an internal reviewbut we will not be notified. Currently this is a great hazard and cost.
