• Recall 114944 [USA]: If the shafts separate during vehicle operation, a loss of steering control would result, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  Dorman products, inc. (dorman) is recalling certain model dorman steering shafts, part number 425-359, solutions steering shafts, part number 7-0359, and oe solutions steering shafts, part number 425-359, manufactured april 17, 2014, to september 28, 2015. These aftermarket replacement steering shafts are sold for use in 1995-2002 ford crown victoria, mercury grand marquis, and lincoln town car vehicles. These steering shafts may separate during operation if the integral fastener is loose or missing and if the interfacing vehicle shaft is compressed in length.

  Certain aftermarket fuel filters sold under the purolator brand name, p/n f65277, shipped from january 16 through june 2, 2006, for use on the above listed passenger vehicles. Due to incorrect design, the quick connectors may not fully seat with the tube interface, even though the person making the connection may believe that the quick connector is fully attached.

• Recall 57659 [USA]: Some high-speed rear-impact crashes have resulted in fuel tank punctures and fires in cvpi vehicles.
  In order to enhance police office safety, model year 1992-2003 crown victoria police interceptor (cvpi) vehicles will be equipped with shields designed to help protect the fuel tank in high-speed rear-impact crashes. Ford also will be offering an optional trunk package designed to improve the safe transport of sharp-edged, heavy equipment in these vehicles.

If the hoop strength is significantly compromised, the tank could rupture and potentially result in personal injury. Correction: dealer will install an insulator behind the seat back.

• Spark plug ejection from cylinder head investigation as of 20050922

  On september 6, 2005, odi received a petition requesting that the agency investigate allegations of engine spark plug ejection in certain model year 1997 through 2004 ford vehicles with triton v-8 and v-10 engines.Odi received a total of 474 non-duplicative complaints on the subject vehicles where the complainant, or the dealer repairing the vehicle, reported that a spark plug detached from the cylinder and/or ejected from the engine.As of december 8, 2005, odi is not aware of any allegations where the alleged defect resulted in a loss of vehicle control, a crash, an injury, or a fatality in any of the 10,319,810 subject vehicles.In addition, odi is aware of only two incidents where the vehicle stalled without restart.Information contained in the odi consumer complaints and obtained from 72 telephone interviews with complainants showed the following:(1) 99% of the complaints were on my 1997 to 2002 subject vehicles.(2) most the complainants reported hearing a loud pop while driving or upon starting up the vehicle followed by a loud, repetitive clicking or popping sound.(3) many of the complainants reported that the popping sound was accompanied by some loss of vehicle power; however, in 99% of the incidents reported, the vehicle did not stall.In the very few incidents where the vehicle did stall, most vehicles could be restarted.(4) only a small percentage of the complainants cited that they smelled gas or a slight burning smell when the incident occurred.(5) in all but a very few incidents, vehicle damage was limited to the engine.In one incident, the complaint reported that the fuel rail was damaged and replaced after one of the spark plugs ejected from the engine; however, the complainant reported that the damage did not result in any type of fuel leak or fire.In another incident, the only incident where a fire was alleged, the complainant reported that no fluid leak was observed, but that a fire resulted after the spark plug had ejected from the engine and he had restarted the vehicle and driven to another location.None of the complainants reported any damage to the vehicle hood.(6) only two complainants reported that they observed what appeared to be some drops of fuel coming from the cylinder where the spark plug had failed or on the spark plug itself; however, each of these complainants reported that there was no smoke or flames as a result of his incident.As the petitioner noted, and odi¿s analysis showed, it is possible for a spark plug to detach from the engine cylinder threads in the subject vehicles.However, odi¿s analysis of 474 complaints describing such incidents found only a very few alleged any safety-related consequences.None of these showed any evidence of a serious safety consequence.Given the large population and relatively long exposure time of the subject vehicles, the complaint analysis indicates that the risk to motor vehicle safety from the alleged defect is very low.In view of the foregoing, it is unlikely that nhtsa would issue an order for the notification and remedy of the alleged defect at the conclusion of the investigation requested in the petition.Therefore, in view of the need to allocate and prioritize nhtsa¿s limited resources to best accomplish the agency¿s safety mission, the petition is denied.

• Front seat belt buckle assembly investigation as of 20050217

  During the initial recall campaign in 2001, the subject vehicles were inspected by ford dealerships using a test tool that would detect a defective front seat outboard seat belt buckle assembly.Approximately one million vehicles passed the inspection test for one or both front buckles.Subsequent to the recall service action, odi received 15 consumer reports alleging that a passed inspection buckle subsequently failed to latch or inadvertently unlatched during use.In addition, ford has identified 543 owner and field reports alleging buckle failure subsequent to passing the inspection test.Ford tested and examined over 100 warranty-returned buckles and found that 44% of the buckles had no problem or a condition not related to the recall inspection (non-latch related buckle damage or foreign contamination).Warranty claims were highest during the 18-month period after the start of the recall (july 2001) and have been declining during the past 24 months.Over the past 12 months, ford has received approximately 12 warranty claims per month out of a vehicle population of about one million.Complaints counts are also decreasing.During the past seven months, odi has received only two complaints. A safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.Accordingly, this investigation is closed.The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.The agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.

• Cng tank explosion investigation as of 20030127

  In september 2002, a fuel cylinder in a natural gas powered vehicle (ngv) exploded during a fire.Ford and vrtc test engineers jointly examined the incident vehicle and reviewed testing to determine whether the performance of the pressure relief valve (prd) was proper.The purpose of a prd is to protect a compressed natural gas tank from overpressure by allowing the cng to vent when the temperature reaches a specific point.The prd was removed from the failed tank and subjected to a yield temperature determination test. It was concluded that a direct flame (from the interior of the vehicle) onto the cylinder (located behind the rear seat in the trunk)compromised the hoop strength of the natural gas cylinder, thus allowing the cylinder to fail prior to the prd releasing at itsdesigned temperature.As a result of this testing and review of the involved vehicle, ford has developed an insulator to insulate the natural gas fuel tank from a locally directed flame projecting from the interior of the vehicle.Insulators will be installed behind the back seat on subject vehicles to prevent future failures of this type. Fords action addresses the concerns of odi.Therefore, this investigation is closed.

The steering shaft is creaking when you turn and alotta play in the steering sounds like it's about to snap it happens in the city and highway when i turn or bear left or right the pic the shaft thing on the left is a picture of the part happens when i'm in motion and even when i'm stationary and i turn the steering wheel has not caused a wreck yet but feels like it would if that part brakes.

When at a traffic light stopped and the air conditioning is on high the turn signals periodically rapidly flash. The audible clicking of the turn signals clicks fast as well. The bulbs are not blown. It happens randomly or it does happen.

While driving the car, i lost power and had to pull over, upon checking under the hood, we came to the conclusion that the intake manifold (which is plastic) got to hot which caused antifreeze to leak out. I ended up having to have it towed to my house which is where it has set since. *tr

This happens at any speed: while driving down the road it will shut off numerous times, you have to let it sit for a few minutes and then start it back up, this will happen numerous times while driving it. Also, if you don't drive it for 2 days, it will run the battery dead. *tr

While pulling into a parking lot the car accelerated and i missed a parked car and was able to stop. I was going about 5mph and it accelerated very fast not sure mph but it was scary. I happened sept. 14, 2011. *tr

Front passenger seat belt retention device would not release resulting in squeezing of child wrapped up in seat belt. The seat belt had to be cut with a knife to get child out of seat belt. Even with the buckle unlatched. No medical treatment was necessary but, child was severely traumatized as the seat belt was squeezing her so tight that the adults trying to free her could barely get a finger between her and the seat belt. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2001 ford crown victoria. The contact stated that he worked for a company that had six crown victorias and one ford mustang. The gasket had to be replaced on the fuel tank from the filler pipe. When he filled the vehicle with gasoline, fuel would leak out on top of the hot exhaust. The contact noticed a trend and the company replaced the gaskets on seven vehicles. He is currently waiting for the part for the seventh vehicle, which is on backorder at every dealer in atlanta. He has not consulted the manufacturer. The current mileage was 120,457 and failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

The dealer informed him that they did not know when the parts would be available; however, they deactivated his wiring harness. He received a new notice in march of 2008 stating that the parts were available. He contacted the dealer and they stated that he would have to personally order the parts if he wanted his vehicle repaired. There had been no failure to date. The recall number was unknown. Tl*- the contact owns a 2007 ford crown victoria, and while making a left hand turn at 5 mph the ball joint on the front driver's side fell off. The contact took vehicle to the dealer, and they replaced both front ball joints. The failure mileage was at 81,000 miles. *ak

While driving my 2001 ford crown victoria lx 4.6l v8 on may 23rd, i heard a loud boom from under the hood and a sudden loss of power. I took it to a mechanic and he said that the number 3 spark plug had blown out of the cylinder head. He charged me over 250.00 to fix it. He said that he sees this same thing on this particular motor about 8 times per year. When researching on the internet i found numerous other people across the united states that have run into the exact same thing, only to be told by ford and repair technicians of ford that there is not a problem. I had to limp across 4 lanes of traffic and pull over to find out what in the heck happened. It did not cause an accident or any injury to myself.....But it certainly could have. *nm

Dt: contact stated while starting the vehicle it revved. When placing the vehicle into drive it did this almost causing an accident. The service dealer did some repairs to the vehicle, but it did not remedy the problem. At first it would do this when the vehicle was cold, but the service dealer replaced an iac valve. Currrently it does it when the vehicle is hot or cold. *ak

The steering wheel wanders from left to right while driving on the highway. Driver took vehicle to the dealership,but mechanic could not duplicate the problem at this time. Driver had an accident last month due to this problem. But he was able to control the vehicle to safety, there were no physical injuries nor fatalities to report. *ak

In a frontal collision at a high speed none of the air bags deployed on impact.*ak consumer was injured.*jb

While attempting to pull into a parking stall, vehicle completely shut down and stopped abruptly. Would not restart, door locks could not be engaged. Driver was thrown into steering column causing bruising. Car was test driven two days later and was working properly. Battery terminals checked - nothing appears loose.*ak

On one occasion it accelerated while driving at about 70 mph and had to be turned completely and restarted and the problem was cured no accident happened at that time. The second time it occurred when driving into a parkiing lot, and it accelerated and ran into a guard post. Time. The second time turning into a parking lot and it. *ak

Car was purchased 9/10/01. First problem occurred in april 2002. Car has an intermittent miss. Dealership could not find problem. In august 2002 car began shutting down while driving. This problem has continued and has happened at all different speeds. Car has been into dealership service center a total of 7 times and each time they could not replicate the problem. This is a safety problem since when the car shuts down the power steering and brakes are just about useless. *nlm

While traveling between 10 to 20 mph vehicle was driven off the road, and front of vehicle struck a tree, causing damage to front end and frame. Passengers air bag deployed, but drivers air bag failed to deploy. No determination has been made as to the reason for this failure. *ak *slc

Consumers vehicle was involved in a frontal crash while traveling approximately 45 to 50 mph, upon impact frontal air bags failed to deploy, shoulder belt failed to restrain driver, driver experienced muscle pains in neck/shoulder, and back areas, insurance company concluded the air bag should have deployed.*akconsumer stated manufacturer and dealer are not willing to assist in finding out why the restraint system failed, consumer stated the passenger side airbag did deploy, however the driver side did not.*jb

The brake booster failed causing squeaking noise when the pedal is applied, the connection had come loose on the right rear wheel causing the abs and traction control lights to illuminate. Nlm

Windshield wipers failed while driving in inclement weather. The wiper failure resulted in reduced visibility. The vehicle has been taken to the dealer three times but they have been unable to alleviate the problem. The consumer request reimbursement for the cost of the vehicle. *nm

Rotary switch has several functions for operating interior lights and headlights. Consumer discovered that while driving with headlights on and pushing switch in to turn the interior lights on, headlights went off. No information concerning this is mentioned in owner manual. *ak *slc

Consumer called complaining about haviing problems with the gas tank. Also stated that he knows that there is problems with this vehicle. Dealer was not contacted at the time this phone call was done. Ts

While driving in the rain and trying to stop the abs brake failed,the vehicle to skidded and caused accident.

When driving on rainy days water gets into vehicle/ water pump pulls, causing it to throw fan belt, and lose control of police car. Please provide vehicle identification number and mileage for vehicle, and any further information.*ak

On 2001, ford made the seat belt anchor actually a part of the seat. Normally the achor comes from the side of the seat,now it comes out of the seat. The change has caused a loss of space for larger individuals, especially police officers. The belt achor ends up coming behing the gun holster, making it impossible to buckle the seat belt.*ak

We are concerned to drive our crown vic because of the alleged fuel tank problems. We live in phoenix, az, and in the past three years four police officers have been either killed or severly injured due to collisions that resulted in the fuel tank catching fire. We would like to know what ford motor co. Plans to do about this. Is our crown vic safe to drive? If not, what do we need to do? If we retrofit the gas tank right now, we will void our warrenty. We are in a quandry as to what to do.*ak

Door label and owners manual does not give a tire pressure. Consumer contacted ford company, but they refused to give information. Told consumer to contact goodyear. Please provide further details.*ak
