These vehicles may be equipped with a driver or passenger frontal air bag inflator used as a replacement service part, that may explode due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to high absolute humidity, temperature and temperature cycling.

• Recall 115502 [USA]: If the vehicle experiences a loss of power steering assist, extra steering effort will be required at lower speeds, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.
  Ford motor company (ford) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 ford fusion vehicles without a 3.5l engine and lincoln mkz hybrid electric vehicles, 2011 mercury milan vehicles, 2011-2012 ford taurus, ford flex, lincoln mks, and lincoln mkt vehicles equipped with a 3.5l gtdi engine and 2013 ford taurus, ford flex, lincoln mks, and lincoln mkt vehicles equipped with any available engine. The affected vehicles have electric power steering assist systems that may shut down as a result of a steering motor sensor fault.
  ford will notify owners, and dealers will check the power steering control module (pscm) for diagnostic trouble codes (dtc). If dealers find any loss of steering assist dtcs, the steering gear will be replaced, free of charge.   Issue: this recall is for certain vehicles that had the driver-front and/or passenger-front airbag inflator replaced after a collision or theft. An obsolete airbag may have been installed. On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, may eventually degrade the propellant contained in the driver-front airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. If the airbag inflator ruptures, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants or cause damage to the airbag assembly, preventing its proper function. Safety risk: if the vehicle is involved in a crash requiring an airbag deployment, the airbag inflator could rupture and create a risk of injury. • Recall 2015224 [Canada]: Steering
  On certain vehicles, a fault in the electric power steering (eps) system could result in an immediate loss of power steering assist without warning to the driver. This would unexpectedly increase the steering effort force necessary to steer the vehicle at lower vehicle speeds, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: dealers will affect repairs as necessary and will reprogram the eps controller with updated software. In the event that an eps fault occurs, this updated software would allow for continued eps function while displaying visual and audible warnings to the driver until the end of the drive cycle.

• Pedestrian alert sounds investigation # DP22005

  Nhtsa received a petition on or about july 18, 2022, requesting that federal motor vehicle safety standard (fmvss) 141 be applied to all electric and hybrid vehicles operating in the united states. The petition can be reviewed at nhtsa.Gov under odi number 11486072. Fmvss 141 establishes performance requirements for pedestrian alert sounds for motor vehicles. The standard applies to hybrid and electric vehicles that have a gross vehicle weight rating of 4,536 kg or less or are defined as low-speed vehicles. The standard became fully applicable to all such vehicles manufactured on or after march 1, 2021.On january 27, 2023, nhtsa opened defect petition (dp) 22-005 to evaluate the subject matter described in the petition. On june 24, 2023 and as supplemented on june 25, 2023, the petitioner notified nhtsa he was withdrawing his petition. The petitioner indicated that, based on his review of data, there is no justification for asserting potential benefits that could be derived from actions sought by my petition. Based on the petitioners withdrawal, dp22-005 is closed. Closure of this dp does not represent a determination by nhtsa regarding the subject matter of the petition.

• Power steering failure investigation # EA17004

  On september 28, 2016, the office of defects investigation (odi) opened a preliminary evaluation (pe16-011) to investigate claims of power steering assist loss on model year (my) 2010 ford fusion vehicles.  during the pe, odi received 718 unique claims related to the alleged problem with 598 reports indicating the power steering assist failed while driving at various speeds with no warning.  ford motor company (ford) provided 1,851 unique reports and 1,720 warranty claims related to the alleged problem.  it should be noted that as the result of investigation pe14-030, ford conducted a safety recall (15v-340) ofmy 2011-2012 ford fusion and other vehicles using the same electric power assist steering unit to rectify incidents of loss of power steering assist. On november 20, 2017, pe16-011 was upgraded to this engineering analysis (ea17-004) to further assess the scope, frequency, and consequence of this failure.  this was based on an analysis of the subject vehicle complaint data that had indicated an increased likelihood of failure as the vehicles age.  at the time, the rate of occurrence of this failure was comparable to previous investigations involving loss of power steering assist including the previously mentioned pe14-030. During the ea, odi’s analysis of the alleged defect in the subject vehicles identified the following:  testing showed minor steering effort changes between “assist” and “no assist”, no root cause identified, a declining failure trend, the ramp-down or reduced assist provided when a dtc is set, a lower failure rate than the recalled fusion vehicles, and the high age of the vehicles. A safety-related defect trend has not been identified.  accordingly, this engineering analysis is closed.  see the attached engineering analysis closing report for details.  the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety defect does not exist, and odi will take further actions if warranted by future circumstances.  to review the reports cited in the closing resume odi report identification number document, go to nhtsa.Gov.

• Electronic throttle body malfunction investigation # PE13003

  On february 21, 2013, the office of defects investigations (odi) opened preliminary evaluation pe13-003 to investigate allegations of electronic throttle body (etb) failures resulting in sudden reduction of engine power in model year (my) 2009-2013 ford escape, fusion, mariner and milan vehicles. During this investigation, ford identified a condition in subject vehicles equipped with 2.5l and 3.0l engines that may result in a sudden reduction of engine power.According to ford, the etb internal motor contacts may develop a high resistance material buildup condition on the commutator, resulting in intermittent electrical connectivity and reduced engine power. When this condition occurs, the malfunction indicator lamp (mil) or wrench light will illuminate and the vehicle may enter a limited limp home mode.Ford?S trade name for the feature is failure mode effects management (fmem) mode.In this mode, engine power and vehicle speed are reduced, while full function of the power steering, power braking, lighting, and climate control systems are maintained.Odi?S complaint analysis indicate that the predominant failure mode involved reduced motive power associated with the limited limp home mode with engine speeds limited to approximately 900 rpm. Analysis of warranty claims provided by ford identified 59,807 claims related to etb replacements and approximately 50 percent of claims are associated with diagnostic trouble codes (dtc) P2111, throttle body stuck open, and P2112, throttle body stuck closed.Ford described several factors where the etb motor may fail resulting in dtcs P2111 or P2112 but the failure is not an existing stuck open or closed etb valve position.According to ford, the etb control strategy provides the driver with three fmem modes that allow varying degrees of vehicle mobility depending on the severity of the fault detected.Dtcs associated with stuck open or closed throttle valves are designated the highest failure severity resulting in engine speeds limited to high idle corresponding to the limited limp home mode.Vehicles are not likely to unexpectedly stall as a result of this condition, but drivers may characterize the reduced functionality as a stall, even though their vehicle may still has motive capability.Other fmem limp modes may result in reduced engine performance but will maintain vehicle speed above 20mph. During this investigation, ford and its suppliers, delphi and igarashi, updated the powertrain control module (pcm) software to include a throttle body motor cleaning cycle during key-on and modified the etb internal motor components design, surface finish and material composition to improve durability. Additionally, ford developed a remedy procedure and issued a special customer satisfaction program (csp) 13n03 extending the etb warranty coverage and instructing dealers to update the powertrain calibration to improve vehicle performance in the event that intermittent electrical connectivity of the throttle body motor contacts occurs. The program extends the coverage for up to 10 years of service or 150,000 miles from the warranty start date of the vehicle, all vehicles are eligible for the program through january 31, 2015 regardless of mileage.Owners of the affected vehicles will be contacted by mail to take their vehicle to a ford dealer who will reprogram the pcm to the latest calibration. A few weeks ago i went to slow to a stop at the end of my driveway at approximately 5mph. My brake pedal dropped to the floor and i had to repress on the brake pedal to come to a complete stop. It continued working properly for a week or so when it happened again. The same week i was backing out of another driveway slightly down hill and attempted to come to a complete stop to look for traffic. Luckily there was none because my stopping distance was around 12 ft or so going maybe 3mph with the brakes completely pressed. I have since had my brake pads changed and all other components checked and was told were working properly. Now my stopping distance at 10mph is at least 3-4ft. I am too afraid to drive my vehicle at higher speeds on any road due to the stopping distance issues.

A recall was issued in 2015..15s18.. It seems my vin number isn't included in the recall because it was manufactured in new mexico. My power steering at 70 mph goes out without any warning. The above recall is exactly what's happening with my vehicle. Now i am obligated to pay 2k to fix a manufacturing flaw. This is a huge saftey issue to be on the road and while your driving your power steering goes out. I am asking for further investigation as my car is a 2012 ford fusion with the same problem you issued a recall for. I can be reached at [xxx]. Over the past few days driver side door would not open from the inside of the vehicle. Rolling down the window and opening the door from the outside is the only option in opening the driver side car door. This is a safety concern as if i were ever in need to exit the vehicle in an emergency manner i can not easily or quickly get out of the car we’re under water, on fire, etc. My vehicle is not the only vehicle that is having this issue, i have heard reports from mechanics, other ford fusion drivers, and personal experience that ford fusions from about 2006-2013 are having this issue. The issue needs to be addressed for safety concerns and is only happening on the drivers side door.

The contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, the vehicle lost power steering assist and the vehicle became difficult to steer. The contact stated that the traction control warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed with the power steering needing to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was relating the failure to nhtsa campaign number: 15v340000 (steering). The manufacturer was informed of the failure and referred the contact to the nhtsa. The failure mileage was approximately 118,000.

1) brake hydraulic control unit (hcu) failure. Dealership removed and replaced hcu assembly and abs module. All parts retained by dealer. 2) hcu brake failure made stopping very difficult and slow to stop. Dealer recommended not driving until repaired. 3) dealer confirmed hcu failure with computer code analysis. 4) hcu and effected parts not inspected by anyone other than dealer. 4) numerous red abs and brake warning lights upon backing out of garage to street. I shut the engine off and restart in the hope of correction, to no avail. Problem re-occurred. Vehicle could be stopped but with difficulty -- slow to stop and hard to stop. Dealer replaced hcu assembly and abs module and added pm1c brake fluid (dot3), this hcu failure apparently has been a problem in ford fusion and other ford vehicles (see safety recall 19s54 -anti-lock brake system hydraulic control unit valve function -- 2006-2010 ford & lincoln mercury). It doesn't look like the problem has been resolved. Note that brake fluid used is dot 3 and not the ntsb recommended remedy dot 4 brake fluid

The contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. The contact stated while entering and starting the vehicle, a message appeared on the screen which stated that the power steering assist was disabled. The contact attempted to reverse out of the drive way however, the steering wheel failed to turn. The contact shifted the vehicle backed into park. The local dealer was contacted about the failure however, the dealer was unable to inspect the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 156,000.

The contact owns a 2012 ford fusion. The contact stated that while reversing, the electric power steering failed and the steering wheel ceased. The failure occurred on three separate occasions. The dealer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and the contact was informed that the vin was not under recall. The failure mileage was approximately 52,000.

Unknown one day i was driving my car like normal, i stopped and parked it and a message saying "service power steering now" popped up. I immediately lost all power steering.

Power steering service now light came on driving away from my neighborhood and started making a loud noise on right front wheel of car, pulled over to see if i had a flat and did not. Turned around and went back home so i wouldn’t get stuck somewhere or wreck. While driving to the shop to get it looked at the power steering failed and could barely turn the wheel. This could have resulted in a wreck. The shop confirmed the power steering is out on the car again! Power steering sensor was recently replaced after wreck therefore it shouldn’t be going out a month later.
