Known Recall Investigations
  • Fuel leakage from the fuel tank investigation as of 20130315

The office of defects investigation (odi) opened this investigation on january 23, 2012 as pe12-001 based on 20 consumer reports in model year (my) 2003-2006 e55 amg vehicles.Based on new reports in other e-class vehicles, odi upgraded the investigation to engineering analysis (ea) 13-003 on march 15, 2013, and expanded the scope to all e-class vehicles through my 2008.The complainants alleged a strong odor of gasoline fuel both inside and outside of their vehicle, particularly after refilling the fuel tank. Many of the complainants noted that the odor subsided or went away after driving some distance thereby lowering the fuel level in the tank.Other owners reported they would only fill the tank to about three quarters full to avoid the odor altogether. Some complainants alleged fuel leaked from the fuel filter/sender, located on the top of the fuel tank on the drivers side, and collected on top of the tank. There were also allegations that the fuel leaks were associated with an emissions recall campaign (no. 2008020001) conducted by mercedes-benz usa, llc (mercedes) in 2008 on my 2003-2006 e-class and cls-class amg models. The issue in the recall involved small cracks in the pressurized outlet fitting of the fuel filter/sender.Amg vehicles are high performance models that operate at higher fuel pressure and use a different fuel filter/sender and fuel pump than non-amg models.Information on recall no. 2008020001 is available from the u.S. Environmental protection agency (epa) website at www.Epa.Gov.Odis investigation found various leak sources that are unrelated to the outlet fitting cited in the epa recall campaign.Through interviews with complainants, field inspections of complaint vehicles, and the collection and laboratory analysis of failed parts, three identifiable leak sources were found. The component parts and areas of the leaks involve the on-board diagnostic fuel tank pressure sensor (located on top of the fuel filter/sender), the outlet of the centrally mounted fuel tank fuel filling limiter valve, and the top of the fuel pump. These areas of leakage are located at the top of the fuel tank in unpressurized parts of the fuel system. When the tank is full, fuel can slowly weep/seep from micro-cracks in these components and may collect in cavities on top of the filter/sender, pump, or tank.Contrary to complainants allegations that fuel entered the inside of their vehicle under the rear seat bench, neither odi nor mercedes found a plausible way for this to occur. The fuel tank is located outside of the passenger compartment, attached to the underside of the vehicle. The service access ports for the fuel filter/sender (drivers side) and fuel pump (passengers side) are located under the rear seat bench, covered by a steel plate, sealed and bolted to the vehicle floor. When technicians service the fuel filter/sender, which has a regularly scheduled 60,000 mile service interval, and/or the fuel pump, the work is performed from inside the vehicle by working through the access ports.By letter dated september 4, 2014, mercedes has notified the agency that it will extend the original warranty coverage to 15 years and unlimited mileage on "covered fuel tank components" in e-class vehicles in my 2003-2009 and cls-class vehicles in my 2006-2011.The covered fuel tank components for the warranty extension include the fuel tank, fuel filter/sender, fuel pump, and all related gaskets/seals and retention rings.Odi is closing this investigation based on the manufacturers extend warranty of the affected fuel system components and in consideration that the nature of the leaks does not appear to present an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety.Additional information concerning this investigation, including a list of the above odi reports and vehicle research and test center report no. Vrtc-dcd-3206, can be found at http://www-odi.Nhtsa.Dot.Gov/owners/searchsafetyissues (search for ea13-003).

  • Fuel system (tank/sender) leakage investigation as of 20120123

There is no summary currently available

  • Driver air bag circuit high resistance investigation as of 20100514

Mercedes-benz usa (mbusa) has reported a high number of warranty claims for air bag warning lamp illumination due to a diagnostic fault code 9103 or 9123 indicating a high resistance in the drivers frontal air bag firing circuit.Mbusas testing and evaluation have shown that this condition is the result of a faulty connector (specifically, improper wire crimp) but that it will not prevent proper deployment of the drivers frontal air bag.The faulty connector can cause the air bag circuit resistance levels to exceed the threshold that illuminates the air bag warning lamp, but they do not exceed a higher limit at which proper deployment of the air bag may no longer occur. The agency believes that further expenditure of agency resources does not appear to be warranted at this time. The closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists. The agency will monitor the issue and reserves the right to take future action if warranted by the circumstances.During the investigation, odi learned that mbusa will initiate a warranty extension program to address the faulty connectors in subject model year 2005 and 2006 e-class and other mbusa model/model year vehicles. This action will extend the warranty coverage for this issue to 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurs first.Mbusa will notify all affected vehicle owners of this action.A bulletin describing this program is available in the investigative file.

Stepped into my 2006 e55 amg in the morning to a strong fuel odor, drove the car a few miles, still smelled the fuel. When i came home i jumped on to the computer and searched on google about fuel oder inside w211 chassis cars. Found a lot of other owners have experienced same symptoms, confirmed by lifting up rear seats to find fuel puddle under the seat cushion behind the driver side. The cushion, sound deadening material and wires were all wet from fuel. Immediately took the car to mercedes at foothill ranch in ca, and they stated there is a open recall and warranty extension. Hoping to get this fixed.

I own two mercedes e55 vehicles. One is 2005, one is 2006. On the 2005 i have had what has become a common symptom of fuel smell first outside the car (especially after filling the tank completely), which migrates to inside the car as the problem worsens. I believe a recall campaign was performed on the car in 2011 to address this issue. The problem returned. The car is obviously out of warranty and has had the issue addressed a few times now. As the original owner, i have had first hand experience of the issue over the course of 9 years. I did not think too much of it at the time, except now that i have another 2006 e55... Virtually identical... Exact same thing is happening. The 2006 was purchased used in july of 2013. I complained to the used car dealer about the issue (it came with a 6 month warranty) and they said it was possibly a leaking o-ring on a spark plug. The fuel smell remained after the repair however, very strong when tank filled or the car on an incline... Especially on hot days. Only after searching the internet did i find that many others had the same experience... And i was 2 for 2 on my cars. Same models, same symptoms. The 2006 unit is far worse, however and may have never had the original recall performed. I pulled the back seats and inspected the fuel areas... And sure enough small puddles of gas and stains from previous puddles. The smell is so strong now i avoid using the car. When you have a single car with a singular problem you don't suspect much. When you read about others with a similar issue, your suspicions may raise a bit. However, i promise you when you buy another identical car and it has the exact same overwhelming problem, that's when you wake up. The fuel smell is so strong, i have not had a single occupant not notice in the last 3 months. I'm parking the car until i can figure out a way to get it resolved. *tr

Car developed strong fuel smell inside cabin. During 100k miles service, dealer suggested possible future replacement of fuel sending unit at customer's expense. After service visit to dealer, fuel smell inside cabin became stronger and rear seat was removed by customer and discovered fuel fluid accumulating beneath rear seat. Inspection cover was removed and the sending unit was found leaking fuel from top cover of sending unit through a crack on it. Fuel leak is confirmed to generate through a hairline crack at top of sending unit. It is not from seals or threaded cover. *tr

Please reference existing nhtsa complaint #pe12001. My 2006 mercedes e55 has raw fuel puddling under the rear seat area behind the driver's seat. There appears to be a leak from the housing or tank itself in this area. The fuel leak is substantial and the vapors from this leak are overwhelming inside the car. I have taken numerous detailed photographs of this leak. I also have a video clip that appears to capture a hissing sound of pressurization inside the tank forcing fuel vapor into the interior of the car. I would be happy to share any of this information with you to help with your investigation. My understanding is that you have already received several dozen complaints about this exact problem from other mercedes e55 owners, and perhaps from other mercedes models that use the same gas tank / sender units. Due to the amount of fuel that is puddling up in the back of my car, i am afraid to drive it and the raw fuel smell is giving me a headache even when i keep the windows rolled all the way down. I would appreciate your help in applying pressure on mbusa to provide a valid and complete fix for this issue. *tr

Gas fumes from inside car caused wife and daughter to become sick and nauseas (daughter has asthma). Dropped off vehicle at scottsdale schumacher european for repair or replacement on august 23th, 2012. I filed a written complaint with mercedes-benz at the same time of delivery. Received back a written letter from customer retention manager/[xxx] on september 5th, 2012 denying/ refusing refund or replacement. On sept 11th, 2012 i picked up and paid $1167.00 for labor to replace fuel tank and assembly (dealership did not charge for parts). On august 23rd, 2013 the fuel system is once again causing unbearable gas fumes inside car. The fumes are so strong that any spark may indeed set the car ablaze..Updated 09-18-13 *bf updated 9/24/2013 *js information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.S.C. 552(b)(6). *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 mercedes benz e55. The contact stated that after refueling the vehicle, he could smell gasoline inside the cabin of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis and the contact was informed that the fuel tank seals would need to be replaced. In the process of replacing the seals, the mechanic discovered that the fuel pump was also cracked. The fuel pump was not replaced and after the repair, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified but offered no assistance. The failure and current mileage was 32,000.

I came outside to my car and could not get it to start. The car would crank but would not turn on. Had the car towed to the local mercedes dealership (euro motorcars in germantown, md). I was told that the fuel pump was leaking and that the fuel shorted the connector that turns the fuel pump on. I googled the problem online to see if it was a common issue, and it seems as if many people have this issue and mercedes already performed a recall on these cars to take care of this problem. I confirmed with the dealer that the recall was done to my vehicle and it was. *tr

Just bought the car, and first time i filled the tank up (never topoff) started noticing a smell of gas, as the week went by smell increased.....Followed forums suggestions and found a puddle of gas on top of the sending unit under the rear seat on the drivers side. Car is hard to drive due the smell, and i'm actually getting headaches from it. Own 4 mercedes including this, which is the latest model of all, and never had a safety issue that relates to gasoline on any of the others. *tr

On 1/25/2012 i noticed a smell of gas upon refueling my vehicle. The dealer diagnosed the issue first as a defective fuel sender and after replacing the fuel sender as a defective gas tank. Essentially fuel was leaking from the gas tank under the back seat and pooling under the back seat. The smell of gasoline vapors was extremely strong and alarming. I replaced the fuel tank at my own cost. *tr

Summary: both fuel sending units leaking from the top of the fuel tank. Fuel was puddling under the rear seats and was dripping on to the ground. My 6 year old son got in the car this morning and complained that it smelled like gas. This a major safety issue as well as an environmental issue. What would happen if the leaking fuel came in contact with a hot exhaust pipe? A recall was issued for this same problem in 2008, however, the recall did not resolve the problem, it only delays it until you are out of warranty and are forced to pay out of pocket for a costly repair. *tr

After filling up the car with gas, it smells of gas fumes from the left rear wheel well. Happens every time i attempt to fill the tank. I've been filling gas tank to only 3/4 tank to reduce the gas fumes emanating from the car after gas fillups. Maybe poor seal with fuel pump and gas tank itself. Car was looked at in a previous recall campaign, but problem persists, and based on online reports, is a very common issue. *tr

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 mercedes benz e 55. While driving 65 mph he heard 2 loud pops and then the vehicle collapsed to the ground. Sparks flew all over the highway, which almost caused a major crash. The air bag suspension on the rear of the vehicle had blown. He was able to pull the vehicle over to call the roadside assistant, but the wait time was too lengthy. He then drove the vehicle home at very low speeds from pennsylvania to virginia. Prior to the failure, three different suspension repairs were performed. He drove the vehicle to the manufacturer service center to have the vehicle repaired. He advised the technicians that every time the vehicle was started air would leak underneath the vehicle. The manufacturer feels this vehicle was damage upon delivery and feels the dealer knew about the damage to the rear air bag suspension. They speculated that there are many other year make and model with this same failure. Contact the current mileage was 14,600. The failure mileage was 4,500.
