NHTSA Mandated Recalls
  • Recall 33842 [USA]: The softtop can inadvertently open startling the driver, which could result in a crash.
On certain passenger vehicles, the softtop structure catch lever tension can ease resulting in a crack.
dealers will inspect the roof alignment and roof locking pins. In addition, the two roof locking motors will be replaced. Also a new sensor system within the motor assembly will provide an improved control signal to the instrument cluster if the roof is not properly closed when the driver drives off. The recall began january 18, 2005. Owners should contact porsche at 1-800-545-8039.
customers can also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

  • Recall 9197 [USA]: Deployment of the air bag without warning could cause a driver to lose vehicle control increasing the risk of a vehicle crash and personal injury.
Vehicle description: passsenger vehicles. Inadvertent deployment of the air bag can occur.
dealers will inspect the air bag system and a special filter horn relay will be installed that protects the air bag unit from voltage peaks.
owner notification began february 11, 1999.Owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact porsche at 1-800-545-8039.Also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

  • Recall 15639 [USA]: The cover could loosen during driving and detach causing a road hazard for other drivers and/or nearby pedestrians.
The cover sleeves on the exhaust tailpipes have been secured with only two instead of four welding spots.
dealers will inspect the tailpipes and, if necessary, replace them with tailpipes on which the cover sleeve has been secured with four welding spots.
system: exhaust; tailpipe.Vehicle description: passenger vehicles. Note: owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact porsche at 1-800-545-8039. Also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-800-424-9393.

  • Recall 15640 [USA]: With the heater switched on, exhaust fumes from the heat exchanger could enter the passenger compartment. entry of exhaust fumes into the passenger compartment could, in extreme cases, cause asphyxiation and/or loss of vehicle control.
The inside pipes of the heat exchangers might be subject to cracking.
dealers will replace the heat exchanger in these vehicles.
system: engine cooling system.Vehicle description: passenger vehicles.Note: owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact porsche at 1-800-545-8039. Also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-800-424-9393.

  • Recall R/1996/024 [UK]: Insecurity of tail pipe cover sleeve
The cover sleeve on the exhaust tail pipe may have been attached by two instead of four spot welds. There is therefore a possibility that the cover sleeve could detach from the tail pipe whilst driving.
the affected vehicles will be recalled to porsche dealers for inspection. Any tail pipes where the cover sleeves are attached by two welds will be replaced with four weld version pipes.

  • Recall R/2005/009 [UK]: The locking mechanism for convertible top may fail
There is a possibility that when the convertible top is closed the convertible top is not completely locked even though the warning lamp is extinguished. This could lead to the roof opening whilst the vehicle is in motion.
recall the vehicles that are likely to be affected and fit modified locking-mechanism motors. In addittion check that the correct locating pegs are installed and that the convertible top is set correctly.

  • Recall 2004449 [Canada]: Other
On certain vehicles, a crack in the electric roof locking motor's helical gear can result in the catch lever no longer holding the roof firmly to the windscreen frame. If both roof locking motors fail, the softtop could open while the car is in motion. Correction: dealers will replace both roof locking motors. The new electric motors have a stronger gear mechanism, which locks the roof into the closed position. Also, a new sensor system within the motor assembly provides an improved control signal to the instrument cluster if the roof is not properly closed when the driver drives off.

  • Recall 1999014 [Canada]: Seats and restraints
On certain vehicles, inductive voltage spikes caused by the operation of various relays such as the horn relay, could inadvertently deploy the driver's side airbag, predominantly on those vehicles operated in hot and humid climates. Activation of the airbag under these conditions could cause personal injury. Correction: an interference suppressor will be installed into the vehicle's electrical system which will eliminate the potential for voltage spikes.

  • Recall 1995236 [Canada]: Other
The cover sleeves on the exhaust tail pipes may have been secured with only two instead of four welding spots. This may create the risk that the cover could come loose while driving, causing a road hazard for other drivers and/or pedestrians. Correction: vehicles will be inspected and, if necessary, tail pipes will be replaced with ones on which the cover sleeve has been secured with four welding spots.

To ensure accuracy and for your safety, it is recommended to do a free VIN recall check here or here [USA] - UK - Canada.

I work at a small repair facility who specialize in foreign cars. I performed work on my customers 1996 911 cab. The horn was blowing all the time, my customer removed the fuse and asked me to check the problem. I removed the air bag and found the rubber insulator had broken and the retaining frame was making constant contact. I replaced the retaining frame part# 993 347 08 801 . Installed the airbag and reinserted the fuse. The horn is now working. I also check for codes in the airbag system. Found code 2 airbag warning light on , code 30 ignition circuit side airbag passenger . I advised the customer and he took the vehicle. He returned a couple hours later . The drivers side airbag had deployed ,causing burns to his chest and a near crash. I checked and found a recall had been performed some time ago to replace the horn relay for this concern. Nhtsa 98v089001. It has the correct relay in the vehicle. My question is have there been other incidents of post recall deployment? The customer is of course blaming my shop. I have not removed the airbag or any thing else as i am requesting help from porsche in determining the root cause of deployment. I have no problem replacing the air bag and steering wheel if it is an error on my part. But do not want to go thru the expense just to have it happen again if the relay or control module was the cause. I feel this is a safety concern and a delicate matter but further need to know who i should contact for assistance. Also no warning labels are attached anywhere stating this could be a potential problem. Any reasonable person would agree that an airbag deployment unexpected could be fatal. A reasonable person would also agree there should be a warning of some sort on the relay or fuse box stating this potential hazard as well. *tr
