Service Bulletin
Description of Revisions: This bulletin replaces the one dated May
2012. The cause code in the "OWL VMRS Codes and Labor Allowance" table is updated.
General Information
NOTE: This bulletin applies only to vehicles equipped with Meritor SteeLite X30 front brake drums.
Some vehicles equipped with Meritor SteeLite X30 front brake drums exhibit moderate to severe shake or
shimmy when the brakes are applied. Most reported occurrences have been during light to moderate brake application, with the speed decreasing from 60 to 40 mph (97 to 64 km/h). Brake lining has been eliminated as a
contributing factor. Meritor SteeLite X30 drums returned to Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) exhibit excessive runout. Both Meritor and DTNA test departments have found that installed runout over 0.010 in (0.25 mm)
causes shimmy.
Procedure
1. Park the vehicle on a level surface, shut down the engine, and set the parking brakes. Chock the rear tires.
2. Verify that the vehicle is equipped with Meritor SteeLite X30 brake drums.
If the vehicle does not have Meritor SteeLite X30 brake drums, this bulletin does not apply.
If the vehicle has Meritor SteeLite X30 brake drums, go to the next step.
3. Check the front wheel nuts for proper torque. For instructions, see Group 40 in the vehicle’s workshop
manual.
4. Raise the vehicle’s front axle, and place it on appropriate jack stands.
5. Using a dial indicator, check the radial runout on the braking surfaces of the front brake drums.
If the runout on either drum is greater than 0.010 in (0.25 mm), replace the drums and brake linings on both
axle ends.
If the runout on both drums is less than 0.010 in (0.25 mm), check for other issues that may be causing the
shimmy.
6. If replacing the drums, replace the brake linings prior to installing the new drums. For instructions, see
Group 42 of the vehicle’s workshop manual.
7. Replace Meritor SteeLite X30 brake drums with a ConMet® brake drum. Refer to Table 1 for replacement
parts. For instructions, see Group 33 in the vehicle’s workshop manual.
8. Check for incorrect hub-to-drum fitting or debris between the hub and drum.
9. Install the wheels and tires. For instructions, see Group 40 in the vehicle’s workshop manual.
10. Using a dial indicator, check the radial runout on the braking surfaces of the newly installed brake drums.
Runout must not exceed 0.010 in (0.25 mm).
11. Raise the vehicle and remove the jack stands. Lower the vehicle.
